Great video. I just used bicarbonate soda to to remove oil from a bare wood side table top. It only took a few minutes to remove. I poured a fair amount on the stain and then just rubbed it over the stain by hand. I have to give credit to my wife for the suggestion.
Hi. Cool tip. For really tough dirt, grime and oils you can get aggressive and use low fume Oven Cleaner & spray liberally on wood. Let it sit for a couple hours then rinse in really hot water with dawn dish soap added into water before placing wood in. It may take one time or doing same process twice to really leach out all the oils & grime. I had an old rifle stock that was 124 years old and just pure dark brown with muck. ** this method indicated removed it in one try and did NOT hurt the wood. I used bath tub for the hot water rinse. Disclaimer.... that doesn’t mean it won’t possibly effect your projects. I rolled the dice and it paid off big time. Thx. Have fun with all your projects. Restoring is fun. D
Same problem I'm having. I ordered clay instead of litter. I hope my alternative works. I had bike brake oil spill on the floor, mineral oil. I didn't realize the cap was lose and it dropped for hours. I wiped it up and it seemed fine until the wood looked dark and soaked the next day.
That was great and thanks for sharing … it has always been an issue with stock refinishing … one thing you may want to do after this is put water and rub it in. IF oil is still present it will come out then. Thanks 😊
Thanks, that was helpful. I think with a small piece like that I would try urging the wood in a pan of kitty litter and baking it at around 250 degrees. The piece I have is large so I will be trying your method. Thanks again.
If you want to be more scientific about your test, weigh the piece before and after with a gram scale. Just make sure you brush as much of the clay dust off as possible.

Yes, I have tried that method as well. I think the resuls would be comparable. You're welcome and thanks for watching.
Dip it in Acetone. Like magic👍🏻

That's a great idea.
Your would need a very accurate set of scales to measure that tiny amount. Most scales would not even measure that small difference.
why not bake the kitty litter first? I mean, buried in 200 degree litter should be good to bury it in rite?
Mineral spirits would have been much faster… just a FYI.
How many degrees need to remove oil from stock??
👍
