  • Our VW Split Window Bus project continues with preparations to assemble the engine. The first step is to flush the engine before removing the push rod tubes and re-torqueing the heads. Our commitment to using what we have reaches new depths when we refurbish the oil plate by flattening the sealing surface. The generator has had a hard life, so it is disassembled for cleaning, painting, and a new set of bearings. Finally, the long block gets a fresh coat of paint. Check out all of that and more in this episode of Project: Vandemic!
    Much of what we use is linked below - Check it out and get equipped!
    Please make an effort to thank someone who is on the front lines of this national crisis. If that is you, thanks for being here for the rest of us, and please stay safe!

    RTV sealant in the wrong places is one of the worst enemies of these engines. Areas like the valve cover gaskets and engine block halves are no-nos. Those can get sucked into the oil galleys and you definitely don’t want that. For valve cover gaskets I find the best ones are the original cork types without any sealant; a little grease works good to the point where they can be reused several times after valve adjustments.
    I like your approach of trying to reuse as many original parts as possible. There is no substitute in quality to the original German stuff. Very nice video; thanks for sharing.

    • @HapticGarage
      @HapticGarage  3 роки тому

      Yes Ricardo, too much sealant can really cause problems in oil galleys. Your comment may be prophetic- we'll be looking at rocker arms in the next video. Thanks for your input and I'm glad you're enjoying the channel!

    HG! Well I thought I’d give you an update on the generator overhaul. No problems with disassembly. Good thing I have the manual. BTW, when I removed the free end bearing (end with fan) no real problems there. But the drive end (pulley end) was much more challenging. And I noticed you didn’t cover that portion so again glad I had the manual. Good thing my friend had old bed rail ( angle iron) laying around. Followed the instructions to make a plate and forced the bearing off in minutes. Cleaned all the parts and into the painting the end bells ( as I call them). Too cold in the garage so made a paint booth (card board box and light bulb) to get her ready for reassembly this weekend. Anyway, much appreciate the videos from you, and, enjoy your humor. Always posting in Instagram my progress.

      @@HapticGarage all back together! And no bearing noise! Fancey that! But some how I broke the accelerator cable....I have another. You know when you start digging into an engine,you notice things that aren’t right. Since I’ve had the car about a year (65), found a missing fastener on the fan housing, AND, the distributor cap was on backwards....yep, she still ran. During disassembly, fasteners were unexpectedly loose. During reassembly I did a sanity check on everything I could get to. Anyway, she runs great again. Thanks HG!

    As always my sons and I really enjoy your videos. I'm definitely going to take a stab at making a driver bit similar to yours. It would've come in handy on my screws for the doors. Just as a quick tip we were painting the frame on the '70 Beetle and I needed something to plug the female threads for the spring plates and other various holes to keep paint out. In the past I've stuffed paper towels in them but this time I used the foam ear plugs. I think it worked great. Obviously, they only fit the smaller diameter holes but it worked out nicely. They went in easily enough and they will come out easily as well. Anyway, I wanted to give something back to you since you're gracious enough to share with us. Thanks a lot and as always we can hardly wait to see you in the next one!

    • @HapticGarage
      @HapticGarage  3 роки тому

      Hey Mofoco 1432! Absolutely, the driver bit thingy would be good on VW door screws. You're probably aware that a #4 Phillips bit is a must, and I can say from experience the air hammer bit makes it mostly a stress free task. Thanks for the tip on keeping threads clean- I'll remember that! Sometimes I'll cheat a little and fill that space with the fasteners that will end up there permanently; it solves the thread problem and they get a fresh coat of paint too. I'm certain your idea will come in handy in an upcoming paint project. Thanks for sharing and being a part of the channel!

Very thorough and complete on reassembling the outside in generally replace things that have a good possibility of wearing out not knowing what kinda neglect it has been through ? Have you ever checked the compression on the cylinders yet ? Let's see if we can get Haptic subscribers up to 2.5K !

    • @HapticGarage
      @HapticGarage  3 роки тому

      Wow, thanks Neal for the kind remarks! I haven't done a compression test yet but it would be interesting to know the results. The #4 spark plug was cross threaded earlier in this engine's life, so I'm hesitant to remove it unless I really need to. I'm thinking it would be good to rework a set of used heads before something lets loose. For now, the compression seems adequate (fingers crossed). Thanks for the question!

    I’m surprised you painted the block. I read many years ago that VW specifically didn’t paint their air cooled blocks as paint, no matter the thickness, holds in heat.
    I do enjoy your videos and the honesty you project in these endeavors.

    • @HapticGarage
      @HapticGarage  3 роки тому

      Hey Glenn, thanks for your comment. The paint would have to act as an insulator to some extent, which is undesirable of course. I think it helps to use flat black paint based on the idea that its rough surface dissipates heat well. The benefit of painting is to slow the corrosion process when exposed to water and humidity. Water will eat magnesium when given the chance. This is a lesser-of-two-evils judgement call, but the decisions we each make keep engine projects interesting! Thanks for being a part of the channel!

      @@HapticGarage love your videos wish I had an old bus like that but I just picked up a 74 love bug orange or( red hot red)can't wait to tear into it. But first I'm camming my escalade . I put a/c in my garage with a swamp cooler. Freaking cold 🥶

      Nice! I like the '70's bugs too. Lots of refinements represented in those models after years of functional improvements. Enjoy the AC- you must be in a less humid environment. I have an evaporative cooler that doesn't make a difference with the water on/off. It's kinda swampy here but just keeping the air moving helps a lot.

      Thanks Peter, I have some of those laying around that I'll use at some point, but so far have just opted for the normal deflectors.

    Instead of filing, you should carefully bang the cover flat. Filing just makes the cover thinner, nice video, you have a new subscriber

    Loving the Videos Haptic Garage! Im about to pull my 1600 out of my beetle for some tin fixes and other fixes on my engine. I will look into the Kerosene trick since the beetle has sat for awhile and I want as much sludge worked out of the motor prior to starting it up! Im excited for you to get back to your Beetle as well after the Van!

      Thanks Russell, great to have you here! I hope the engine pull goes well and the tin cleans up nice. Regarding the engine flush, there's not much to it but to seal the bottom half of the case (drain plug, valve covers, etc.), fill it up until it starts leaking (probably at the pulley if the oil pump is in place, and then drain. Repeat until you're content. Full disclosure, this was more of an experiment that seems to have gone well. Getting back in to the Dweezil project now, looking forward to some progress. Thanks for watching!

    Another great video. Well produced. Fun to watch. Tig didn’t seem too impressed. Would have liked to have a little more explanation about the tool you made. (At least for the more ignorant people like me.) Like others here really looking forward to seeing things go together and firing up the engine. Love to see passion in a project....

      Thanks Ken, I'm glad you liked it and I appreciate the support. Tig was a little preoccupied with the rainstorm... and you're right- he's never very impressed. Tough critic but a great dog and copilot. I'll consider doing a video on that remover tool; I didn't come up with it but it's a big help in the right situation. Firing this thing up is gonna be fun to share... thanks for watching and stay tuned!

    The only thing I don't like about Haptic Garage is when it's over and I have to wait for another video. You're approach to fixing things is so oddly relaxing to me....is that weird?

    • @HapticGarage
      @HapticGarage  3 роки тому +1

      Nope, not weird at my house... garage time is therapeutic! Thanks ukerofoz for the kind remark, it's always great to hear from you!

    spring loaded pushrods will lead to engine failure....I lost connecting rod 2 through the case with those damn pushrods, they got hot, lost strength, and oil leaked out....BOOM. 12 miles from Buffalo on the way to Canada... Truckin off to Buffalo...on the flatbed.

      Ouch! Sorry to hear you lost an engine to these things, that really stinks! I share your suspicion, but thought I'd give them a try to keep things simple during this refresh. I'll keep an eye on them while I run this engine and hope for the best. Thanks for the input!

    Any reason you didn't pull the head and install new one piece pushrod tubes? I have never used the two piece but have heard stories about them leaking. I believe they were meant more for a temporary fix rather than a permanent install.

    • @HapticGarage
      @HapticGarage  3 роки тому

      Hey Bob, thanks for the question. Normally I would pull the head, after which I would expect to find cause for tearing the engine down completely. I wanted to avoid that this time in favor of a separate build while this one is on the road. I feel the one piece stock pushrod tubes are the best thing out there when treated with a coat of flat black paint. Logically, these 2 piece types will leak if the little o-rings give up, so I agree they are better as a way to get you home. Or, as in this case, squeeze a little more life out of an existing build. A judgement call for sure... Thanks for inquiring about my take on the matter and for watching the video!
