    You are like the Bob Ross of VW's. I'm old enough to remember air cooled VW's were a dime a dozen and parts were plentiful and dirt cheap. I had a hand full of bugs and somehow managed to keep them running, however after watching your videos i'm alarmed by how many mistakes I made while working on the engines. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

    Hi Brent,
    Boy, you do some nice work! I have been working on VWs for a long time and when I watch you work it is a joy. Your videos really engage my curiosity and I can't wait to see how this turns out. Very good attention to detail and you are a natural in front of the camera and behind it. Where do you like to buy your parts? I love the letter stamp font you used to spell out Haptic Garage. Same same as an engine serial number. Nice touch! Keep up the great content and I hope you got some rest after your all-nighter. (I remember those!) Cheers! G.

    • @HapticGarage
      @HapticGarage  3 роки тому

      Thanks G. Cooney, that's high praise from an experienced Vdubber! My favorite place to buy parts is a swap meet, mainly for the experience but sometimes because old worn parts could be better than anything available new. Most of the time I'm at the local VW shop or ordering from the same online retailers we all know: Wolfsburg West, CIP1, Aircooled.net, etc. Mostly I'm looking for value; a competitive price is nice but I'll order from anyone who has the good stuff. Good catch on the steel stamps- I've always liked the look of those. I appreciate the great comment and your support!

  • @SkaterStimm

    Fantastic job. I love your attention to detail. It is funny we just made the same wiring harness on my 1600 dp, and it looks almost identical. Just ran the metal fuel lines too in a similar way. My engine ran in my 68 double cab for the first time since 2002, it was sitting with no engine. Restored the brakes, gas tank, suspension, front steering, engine, transmission, electrical, but we still haven't driven it yet because there is an issue with the steering wheel (the double cab was parked because it had a front end collision and the floor was slightly buckled) where the square rubber is hitting the steering shaft cover plate. However once that is resolved it is ready to roll. Great video and editing, really enjoyable!

I hadn't subscribed back then and stumbled upon this E16 video. Great editing and entertaining!! I just subbed but now I'll have to stay up late and binge watch the episodes in order 😉

    Congratulations on that wrap up, man! I am actually looking forward to replace the rubber gas line with tubing just like you did and as it was originally on mi '81 mexi baywindow. You gave me an awesome idea on how to create that pattern, which, as a matter of fact, hadn't think of LOL. I don't think I need the part that goes into the engine, though, as it still keeps the OE tube that runs from the fuel pump to just about the same place above the exhaust pipe as you showed.
    I also want to add a shut-off valve to make fuel filter replacements and engine removals a lot less messy. Do you have something in this department that you can recommend?
    Congrats again and cheers from Mexico! Keep it up, buddy!

    • @HapticGarage
      @HapticGarage  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks VochoTalacha, it's great to hear from you again! A shorter metal line than the one I made would be easier to work with during an engine install, so your situation with the '81 bay sounds good. I like to keep the fuel line as simple as possible for safety reasons, so the only shut-off valve I would use would attach directly to the tank outlet and retain the "sock" fuel filter. As you probably know, there were shutoff valves on the earlier Beetles and Busses, so maybe start there to see if the threads and hole size are compatible. If that doesn't work, maybe a "petcock" fuel shutoff valve from a motorcycle would do the job. I've also seen some discussion of an electronic shutoff valve but that isn't so simple anymore. Good luck with the project and let us know how it turns out!

    • @VochoTalacha
      @VochoTalacha 3 роки тому +1

      @@HapticGarage thanks for the tip. I agree with you: a hard line made out of metal tube is the way to go for security reasons, as today's rubber fuel lines are really crappy. They get all cracked and unsafe in a matter of a few months. Replacing those little bits is way easier and cheaper than the whole shabang.
      I don't think (actually not sure if) my bay had a screw-on type gas tank outlet, as it's got a simple little outlet. Kinda looks like one of the little venting spouts on a beetle tank, but has the correct size for the gas line. Weird thing is, the little spout points towards the passenger side, and as you know, the bend is needed towards the driver's side. I'm really suspicious that this spout was put in place as some kind of repair.
      I can't see if this has been welded in place or what, but I am sure someone tinkered with this tank outlet, as the hole in the bus' body is kinda torn. It looks as if they cut a slit on the sheet metal and bent it like a tuna can lid so the spout would be more accesible.
      Unfortunately here in Mexico nobody cares enough to share technical data of these old vehicles over the internet, and those who have it, have all those books collecting dust somewhere, and probably those people don't even remember that they have the books in the first place. It'd be great for me to find out whether my version of baywindow used an external fuel filter or not.

    • @HapticGarage
      @HapticGarage  3 роки тому

      @@VochoTalacha Yes yes yes- some of the fuel line available today is scary!
      Sorry for the strange terms but... it sounds like your tank has a "nipple" instead of a "bung". If so, that's unfortunate but it may be enough to keep the bus on the road. It also would mean there is no way to use the standard sock-type filter with that tank and that's a real bummer. These tanks are bare mild steel inside- they will always rust unless they are successfully treated with a tank sealer, which doesn't always work out too well. So a filter is needed for the tank, then I feel everything after should be OK.
      While I don't recommend it, I've welded tanks before while making repairs. It requires a very cautious crazy person to do this, but it's possible to clean and purge a tank, then weld a "bung" in place. Then only other thing may be a new tank and those aren't cheap. Thoughts?

    • @VochoTalacha
      @VochoTalacha 3 роки тому +1

      @@HapticGarage my tank hasn't given me any issues in regards to leakage or anything like it. I guess the previous owners didn't like to put too much gas in it, because I've always filled it to the half, and I think this caused to loosen up this fine brown dust that collected on the filter and somehow found its way to the carburetor a couple of times. Nothing too crazy, but it called my attention. I figure it could be just collected dirt at the bottom.of the tsnk because of the age of the tank itself and given the fact that these baywindows do not have a foldable cover or lid for the gas cap, just the cap itself out in the exterior. I replaced that filter and the new one has collected just a little pinch of said dust.
      I don't know if this tank is rusty, and I doubt it, because when I bought the bus, it was not in an abandoned condition. It was a daily driver and still is.
      Here in Mexico there are still a few radiator repair shops that will also clean fuel tanks. They submerge them in cleaning and rust removal fluids and the workers will fix leaks and anything wrong with them.
      So I have this plan on doing an engine rebuild, as it's got some axial play on the crankshaft and a few oil leaks I couldn't fix. When the engine is out at the machine shop, I will take out the gas tank and have it cleaned at a nearby radiator shop.

    • @HapticGarage
      @HapticGarage  3 роки тому +1

      That fine brown dust could be surface rust rinsing off or actual dirt from a batch of bad gas. I have the same problem in my RV- I've removed that tank for cleaning but wasn't able to get it all out. I feel your pain!
      I have an old radiator shop like that near me- the old guy working there is an expert, great service at a fair price... all the stuff we really miss when it's gone! They call that process "boiling" or "rodding" out the tank here.
      I like your plan. That will be a great time to work with the tank. They might have some good ideas about how to solve the shutoff problem too. I really hope this turns out well for you!

    • @HapticGarage
      @HapticGarage  3 роки тому

      Thanks Don, I'm glad you enjoy the videos. The engine mount gets a brief mention in episode 3 of the Dweezil series, but probably not the explanation you're looking for. Truth be told, that was made out of scraps laying around (including an old lawnmower blade). if I were to make one now I would replicate the common "Porsche" design engine mount. It uses 4 or 5 ribs and a half circle mounting surface- really beefy without getting in the way. For the starter, I used a cut off section of an old transaxle to mounts in the usual locations. I've found two of those for a few bucks at a swap meet so I've never needed to cut up an old case myself. Thanks for watching!

      Thanks again Tom, I'm glad you're able to catch up on the videos. The starter mount is actually that part of a transaxle case, having been cut off for this purpose. I'd like to know how u made the starting with out it being in the bus to test run it

    • @HapticGarage
      @HapticGarage  3 роки тому

      Hey Jason! You need an "engine test stand"- it sounds more formal than it really needs to be. An engine stand will hold the engine place, then to "test" it you'll need to mount a starter and provide electricity and fuel. Use battery cables from the battery to a good ground and the +V post on the solenoid, then a +V wire to the coil and fuel cutoff solenoid (if equipped) preferably through a generic ignition switch. It's a good idea to hook up the generator and voltage regulator too. From there it depends on how fancy you want to be- gauges, panels, wiring looms. Just be safe. I'm probably forgetting something so it might be a good idea to see all of this in action in a previous video: "Engine Build & Test Run" ua-cam.com/video/cw2DkVt8f3o/v-deo.html Good luck and let us know how it goes!

    • @HapticGarage
      @HapticGarage  2 роки тому

      Hello GW, it's the stock size for a "doghouse" engine. Perhaps surprisingly, the stock engine would have had an even smaller cooler than this one inside a "non-doghouse" blower housing. Some choose to route oil lines to an aftermarket cooler to increase the cooling but we kept it simple with this build. Thanks for watching!
