I think this song is up to interpretation. Not necessarily a story, or straightforward. It's a certain feeling that's being expressed, like a longing for hope. For me it's about being depressed. Feeling hopeless yet longing for hope.

i think the song is kind of a meta song about the confusing nature of the need to write and make music. science can’t explain people’s need to make music, it comes from an abstract place, the words and rhythms and melodies, it’ll be the most arbitrary random thing that happens to you in a day that inspires a lyric (nothing worth me saying aloud) but he still does it, he still feels the need to create even if he doesn’t understand why. i think the song is pretty minimal to highlight the depth of that single question, there is so much art made and music released every month, every year, but why to we seem to need to make anything? there’s something really beautiful and interesting there to me

There isn’t much to understand about the song. I believe it’s an abstract interpretation of the main line “why do I need to?” He is asking himself what is his motive? “What’s that sound? What’s that song about?” His answer is simply why does is matter anyway? It’s not worth even mentioning his problem or reacting to critics, so why does he seem to need to? It’s a representation of the inner struggle the protagonist has with his motive for ______ fill in the blank.
That’s my thoughts anyways. I’ve loved Pinegrove for years and could honestly listen and think about the lyrics and try to interpret them in whatever way I see fits for the moment. Hope that helps

Not to sound a bit...idk... I think the vibe this song gives is more cultural.
I don't want to say a black man can't understand, but I want to say there are just SOME things you can't understand without being there. And there are certain things you learn as a result of being in a certain place at a certain time.
I'll never understand the plight of a black person in America. I imagine it's like being a second class citizen, which I've also never experienced...
But we both watch social media. We both see what's popular, based on what other users think we want to see. We both see what's going on around us, in our own ways.
As a white guy, who hasn't struggled with much outside of mental anguish, this song says so much in so few words.

I think this song is open to whatever you want to interpret it as, and that’s the beauty of music, most of it is! But what I get from this song is basically something I deal with in my personal life… you know, you say you’re done with something/somebody or worrying bout whatever because there’s nothing left to say/think/input in the situation but for some reason there is still always that small part of you that always wants to say something/do something/keep it up and that’s always the part you end up giving in to.
Try reacting to Aphasia by Pinegrove as well. Such a beautifully written song, music and lyrically. The build up/flow changes are brilliant!
The song is about is that he is simply out of good song ideas. Everything he’s been writing lately hasn’t satisfied him. I think this line has more meanings than that though. I also believe it's about being unsatisfied with life and wanting to "head Out." The song is a reflection on why it is even worth saying anything in the first place when there isn't anything worth saying about yourself when you don't even care about the things you got to say. Saying it would be easier to check out of life, then waste everyone's time with songs about someone with nothing to them. Very sad.
