Is this the guy that made the riff to ‘Fly Like an Eagle’ and ‘Dark Hours’ with his band sometime in the 70s? First heard of his music in Mindhunter on Netflix as a 2000s kid. Great artist.
I'm 65. I was there last night with my 37 year old daughter. I knew every word of The Joker. I told my daughter, "I wore out my copy of Fly Like An Eagle in the 70s."

When I was 13, on Friday nights before he would go out in his Ford Torino, my big brother and I would shoot pool in the basement. We played two albums, Steve Miller’s Greatest Hits and Hotel California. Some of my most cherished memories.
Love how Mayer told Miller "GO!" But Miller just kept playing rhythm so Mayer filled it in! Then Mayer's joy when Miller jumped back in with the lyrics! Mayer's face said it all! Music is so great!!!!
I was noting the same thing. The way he left it open for him but then picked it back up when he saw he wasn't going to go for it. You could see the joy John had playing with him though.
Miller is playing a tiny 12 string, not a solo instrument, but he is doing some cool stuff for his turn. Then John comes in with something playful and original, a perfect counterpoint that takes it to another level, then Steve’s voice takes us even further. Six minutes of pure joy.
Props to John Mayer for letting the moment flow and letting Steve Miller be the focal point. I used to not like John Mayer but I have great respect for him as an artist.
When I attended the Elton John/Billy Joel concert tour a while back, at one point they both stood up from their pianos, and walked to the front of the stage while the throngs belted out to them the chorus to "Piano Man." It was spine-tingling.
Totally agreed. AND, especially considering the fact that he has played this song thousands of times....he still feels it, he still enjoys it - and so do the rest of us. Classic.
I agree, but SM is now singing this in baritone range. Sounds just as beautiful though - because the musicianship and the SM sense of fun is there. What a treat.
I don't care what some people may say about John Mayer....he gave Mr Miller his props...he let him lead throughout the song and played some very tasteful solos. To watch John look at Steve's chord progression and watch what he was doing and play over that very tastefully was just an absolute joy to see. 80 year old Steve Miller is the GOAT. Pure talent and he's been touring every year since the 60s. I've been to dozens of his shows. One time he was his own opening act as PeeWee Frets from Waco, TX. Most of the crowd was oblivious.
I first saw this as a kid in the early 70s as a trailer for a surf movie. I remember a black dude just ripping out the bass line and SM nailing the wah pedal. Always been a favourite.
Loved watching the smiles on Steve's face while his fans are singing out the lyrics! He looks so happy! Great acoustic & harmonic duet from these guys!
I was there! The last time I saw Steve Miller live was at a Meadowlands all day festival with the Beach Boys and Pablo Cruise in 1978. This was a treat! THANKS for sharing.
I was there too! I think it was the grand opening of the Meadowlands for concerts. A really hot day. I remember The Beach Boys came out onto the far side of the field in corvette convertibles and rolled slowly along the side to he stage. Saw the Grateful Dead there a few months later, another hot day in the sun, it was almost unbearable.
