Excellent video. Thank you! I'm very tempted to ditch my Apple, as it's just too easy to go on it for one thing, and then find I've spent 3hrs on UA-cam, and it's 1am! Yes, a dumb phone is way less convenient, but the undeniable truth is that modern convenience comes with seriously unhealthy consequences. Plus a flip phone is still the coolest way to take a call. Beam me up, Scotty 😁

I did the switch! Trying to get better at just knowing streets by memory, but I also just bought a $50 gps system for my car (they're pretty nice nowadays) and for anything else I can either use my laptop or paper and pen for. Sometimes the "losses" I've encountered after downgrading are actually gains. There is freedom in not having everything at your finger tips actually. You don't feel slave to it.

I’ve been using a flip phone on and off for the past 15 years. Saving grace for me is, I have an iPod touch 7 and I can use that for my music, UA-cam, maps, FaceTime.
I also have an Asus Zen laptop with a great printer to print out any tickets etc. I need.
I simply use my flip for calls and a few quick texts. I pay $30 for unlimited talk and text. And my iPod was $200 to still have the Apple experience without paying crazy money for a new iPhone plus the network charge.
People think I’m weird for having an extra device but it works fine for my needs.

🙌🏻 I'm finding the act of getting lost or taking a wrong direction for a few minutes is making me realise that it's not a terrible thing to momentarily have to stop and find other ways to figure out how to get back on track. Of course, safety is very important, but when it feels safe it's actually nice to have to ask someone for directions!

My intention is to use it when out and about but keep my old smart phone basically as a music player when I am at home or on a long commute, but also to use it occasionally at home through WiFi to do banking and catch up on emails and Messenger. In effect the smart phone will become my tablet, but it won't come along and distract me when out on hikes or with friends.

You don't know how useful your video has been for me!! Thank you so much for opening up, for showing us all the benefits of 'being smart' instead of letting the phone doing everything for you. The part where you described the process of music playing, I enjoyed it and it led me to a profound thought of "what happened to the times when it was us who had to be involved in more mental processes and didn't depend on technology" this really made me think how much our brains have become lazy. I know others might not have paid attention to that specific part of your explanation, or thought it was too much work, but that's precisely the point, in my case I loved to think about having to manually do things again! And you're totally right, sometimes we rely on text bc we want to avoid direct human contact, but it's really necessary to demonstrate interest to our loved ones and make the most out of our time on this planet!! God bless you, amazing reflection!!!

However, one huge caveat: _make sure your phone supports the digital cellular system your carrier uses_ . Because many cellphone carriers are turning off 2G (and increasingly 3G) digital cellular support, if you have an older flip phone it might effectively become useless. Check to make sure the phone supports Voice over LTE (VoLTE), which means it can work with 4G LTE digital cellular service, supported by most every cell phone carrier nowadays.

After your last videos on this topic I read the Cal Newport book and have started my digital minimalism journey. I now have a Nokia 2660 Flip for calls and texts and have been loving it! I kept my smartphone for banking and Whatsapp to communicate if needed but I just leave it at home and only switch it on when needed. The only problem I have come across so far has been paying for parking, as some machines don't actually work anymore and only use an app.
Overall the benefits far ouweight a few inconveniences though. It has really made me slow down, realise I don't have to respond or deal with things immediately, and I now have a lot more time to do intentional things I actually love and make me happy instead of endlessly scrolling. Thank you for inspiring me to do this and sharing your experience!

Hello! I have a question concerning WhatsApp: I am, too, trying to downgrade to a dumbphone, but I went to the only store in my city which had one (second hand) Nokia 8000 4G and they said WhatsApp couldn't work, because the software didn't support the WhatsApp updated version... Does WhatsApp really work or did you have to do something to the software so that it could work? If WhatsApp did work immediately, without any intervention, do you know whether this depends on the country where you are using it? I'm asking this because I have to order it online, therefore I can't test it myself before buying... Anyways, thank you for your video! It is nice to see so many people getting aware of the plethora of harmful consequences of widespread smartphone usage!...

The biggest drawback to taking photos and videos with those phones (I have the same one) is that the "lens cover" being integrated into the phone's front cover means that as the cover gets scratched up, so does the area of it that covers the camera lens, which creates a hazy effect on photos and videos. Putting a small piece of black electrician's tape over it will keep that from happening. Just peel it off when you go to take a picture.

Hi. I’m planning to switch to a Nokia Flip 2720, I work in healthcare and since I work long hours I don’t really have any social media life and presence, but since our main communication is whatsapp, I just wanna know does the “group chat” function in whatsapp still work on that phone?

Lol, I had the same discussion with my daughter as you had internally.
Her: why do you still use that phone? How do you keep contact with people without whatsapp or imessage and stuff?
    Me: ?!? Well, its a phone, so…. 😂.
Great video. As someone who helped develop a lot of tech and communictions, I am very interested in how people deal with technology tools.👍

about to downgrade and start my flip phone summer. i've decided to keep whatsapp on my laptop-- you can download the app and then connect it from your smartphone before you downgrade and then it'll work :) so when i'm at home, i'll still have whatsapp. as for gps... my flip doesn't have gps so i'll see how that works. it does have an internet app though so maybe it'll be fine. i'll try planning my journey from home 😭

I haven't used cash since 2019. I pay for everything with my phone, shops, garage, everything. Also my parking app which checks where I am and sends me the code for parking in that area, again no cash required, deducted from your bank at end of the month. I love the idea, but it won't work. I am 71 and live in the Netherlands.

omg yes it's sooo annoying - I bet FB/Twitter pay the phone companies to 'hardwire' their apps in - I can't totally get rid of UA-cam or Twitter, but UA-cam is so slow it doesn't work (and I haven't signed in so there's enough friction for me there to never be tempted to use it) and Twitter is apparently 'no longer supported' a.k.a. it doesn't work. I've moved them to the end of my app list so I never see the app icon when I'm using my phone generally - helps to just erase them from my field of reference!

  • @mikekaraoke

I thought about switching to a dumb phone, until i realised that i am not on my phone too much (barely at all) when i am out and about, or at work. My problem is at home. Where i also have access to a tv, computer and tablet. So what i do is access an app called Zen mode (available on oneplus phones) and lock myself out of my phone 😂 pretty effective and i still get to keep all these apps needed for modern life.

Linux instead of windows. Thinking of doing the same with my phone and also with my PC. Shocker about the waste and also sick and tired of having to change my pc and phone latest all 5-6 years just to stay connected and in touch... For example, with Linux, my 10 year old laptop still runs smooth, i can do everything and got all the updates and recent security patches. Oh. And did i mention? It's free, because it's made by all the brains from around the world that but their heads together to produce this jem. Wish i could do the same with my smartphone. Swipe the custom OS for an open one, with a wide hardware support and almost endless hardware support. Just like Linux Mint for example. Stylish and everything like word, excel, mail, etc just ready to use the split second right after install. Awesome! We need that for our phones! No more obsolete, because no upgrade, so apps won't load, although the phone is still working perfectly. It's only the OS and the decision of the brand on the enforced limitations of not being able to update that particular phone to the new version, that's limiting. Not the phone itself. Seen cheap phones with much worse specs than my old flagship phone, but they still got the newer Android version installed. So i decided that my next smartphone will be the cheapest i can get, just to be able to catch up with the newer OS as soon as my apps stop upgrading/working. Why spend a fortune for only 4-6 years? I still remember my Nokia 3320 working fine for years, easy and relatively cheap to change battery and no heart attack if dropped on the floor. Man, that thing survived violently been thrown to the wall, collecting all the phone pieces dispersed on the floor and then still working like a charm for years to come. Smartphone, one little drop and there's your screen gone costing you a fortune or forcing you to change the whole phone. A phone easily costing more than a bicycle... What a waste of resources we have become to think of being absolutely normal... That's actually pure insanity. Am I right?! What do you think?

Hi Charlie, how are you ?
You look happier, you're even glowing ! what's your secret ? hehe
Thanks to you, I read Digital Minimalism and I loved it !
I'm not addicted to my phone at all, I only use it to listen to music and to read fanfics in the evening. However, I spend a lot of time on my computer to watch youtube videos (to educate myself), I look at emails every now and then, I even order my groceries on my computer. But I'm fine without it, I can leave my home without either my computer or my phone, as long as I have a book !
Same as you, I use whatsapp on my phone to connect with my family since we're all scattered through France.
I use discord only on my laptop and I deleted it from my phone (so no "social media" on my phone).
I have to say that I'm quite afraid to use a flip phone : because of my dyspraxia, typing is quite hard and can be painful on such a small device. I've only known smartphones since I got my first phone in 2012, when I turned 15 and I didn't even want it lol, my parents "forced" me. Do you think a pad like the one on your nokia would be fine ? is it easy for butter fingers (lol)?
For now, I only dumbed down my phone : I use google only to read, I stopped checking the news, I "deleted" youtube (use it only to listen to music).
By the way : are you letting your hair grow ? your lil waves are so cute

    • @charlierewilding
      @charlierewilding  4 місяці тому

omg thank you! maybe it's the digital detox hehe I'm soooo glad to hear you loved Digital Minimalism, it sounds like you have a pretty intentional relationship with technology - I've definitely noticed I'm spending more time on my laptop since getting rid of my smartphone... so for me, I think that's the next thing to focus on! I totally understand your concern about the flip phone - I actually chose this model because it has a bigger pad than most of the other dumb phones I could find. The keys are about the size of my thumb pad, but the device itself is a lot thinner than a smart phone so it's definitely a different user experience! And yes thank you - I'm letting my hair grow - mainly because I just haven't been bothered to get it cut yet hehe. I'll do another video on things I've noticed in my first month of being off my smart phone and aaddress your questions in that :) xxx

Hehe, it's easy to get sucked in another form of "mindless use" of technology on another device ! And we mostly grew up with computers/laptops so it's more familiar, right ?
I appreciate your answer about the flip phone, I'll definitely take it into consideration :D
