Hey Charlie. Very rare that I comment on UA-cam videos and have never seen your channel before, but everything you said in this video really resonated and I just wanted to say that what you're planning to do sounds amazing.
I've been on a very similar journey to yourself over the last 12 months. I downgraded to a dumb phone, use a Filofax to organise my week, have DVDs instead of Netflix, buy books & magazines, don't use social media and have adopted meditation as well as more in-person hobbies.
Overall, it's a really positive journey. I have learned a few things though, which I wanted to share:
    1) I realised that just because I go digitally minimal, it doesn't mean the world around me will. Once you cut out the distractions, your awareness will grow- and you'll start noticing everyone walking around like zombies staring at their smartphones! It's also been very noticeable sadly that a lot of people in their 30's don't participate in hobbies because they're at home - gaming , watching Netflix etc - so again, you can go to groups, but it's quite noticeable the lack of 30-somethings although to be fair this might just be my experience and other hobbies or locations may have more millennials there.
    2) Second, I learned you can ditch the smartphone and use DVDs/books/CD's etc- but if you allow the digital 'noise' a channel to come back in somehow, it will do. In my case it's my laptop. I feel like my laptop usage went up , almost as if to compensate for the lack of smartphone. This is a challenge I'm still trying to tackle.
I think you used the perfect word in your video 'intentional' - it's about making technology intentional by placing limits on it.
We only have one life. You WON'T get to the end of your life and wish you'd spent more time on screens. The more you can cut out digital distractions, the more you make room for the beautiful memories that life is made of. Good luck and wishing you all the best on your digitally minimal journey!

I got rid of my phone 5 years ago and I've always used physical media exclusively over downloads/streaming. In 2024 I'm looking to "level up" my digital minimalism. Step one is closing out accounts on as many websites as possible. The endgame goal is to get rid of wifi and have one desk in my house from which the internet is accessible. Other things I'm considering include: getting a vinyl record player, trying to find a local D&D group instead of just playing online, and
I don't want to be a luddite who never uses technology. I love things like video games or movies and I like having internet at work. My goal is to be... a person from the 1990s, to use technology the way we used it then and to disconnect from the internet specifically.

Love this. I really need to delete all my social media accounts. I actually wrote a letter yesterday for the first time since 1993. I want to start writing to more people. It's such a nice thoughtful way to communicate.

The pros and cons of a smart phone is that you can do everything with it. You doomscroll, then put your phone down, you pick it up to check your calendar and write notes, you put it down, you pick it up to play music before you start doing the dishes, you put it down, you pick it up to skip a song, you put it down, you pick it up, you put it down.
The point of my digital minimalism (or whatever i'm doing) is to decentralize it all. Sometimes it feels very grounding to be intentionally offline for a couple of hours and use a record player, notebooks etc. And feels good to be isolated and feel like nothing is gathering data about everything you do.

Excellent, concise, simple, refreshing, and fun video. I need to be rescued from digital overload, as well. I'm 73, and largely housebound for 8 years due to the effects of horrific virus. I don't have a tv and thought getting a smart phone would be beneficial but I live on my phone and I'm exhausted and mostly alone. I've never heard of a dumb phone. 😂
I intend to reclaim the life I once knew. Thank you. ❤
P.S. My downfall is readings scores of comments made by people who watch videos, too.

when social media actually functions as a social bridge and creates long or short distance connection i love it and i know i haven't fully gotten as much out of what that has to offer! when it feeds my fears back to me algorithmically it probably makes me socially sicker. it's such an odd dichotomy it can give off.

This is such an interesting topic !
I only use my laptop at home because since I'm working in a school (helping disabled kids, sometimes they're autistic and that's how I got the hunch I was lol), we aren't allowed to use our phones in the classroom.
On my break, I read and chat with my colleagues so I only reply to my texts after 4PM.
I stopped having social media a few years ago already (I'm 26).
I have a physical / paper account book so I do all my budgeting by hand.
I use my phone to read smutty fanfictions in the evening and I'm guilty of playing animal crossing pocket camp in the morning (hehe) and listening to a video while reading an article.
I HATE it when someone is on their phone while I'm talking so I do my best not to do that to them.

Charlie, when I grew up we used to write letters. I have a box of old letters and occasionally I read them. It's wonderful! They are very emotive - history. A couple of years ago a friend and I decided we would start writing again. It's amazing to write and receive a letter. We both look forward to it. It's so different to an email. We've kept it up! I too have been thinking about going back to the good old days re technology. I think it stunts creativity. I really do. I do love UA-cam, but I don't have any other social media accounts and I'm going to keep it that way. I too will be making some changes in 2024 with my phone. I'm just about to look up what a dumb phone means. I am presuming it's a phone where you can only make calls and send texts. Good idea!

I'll make a separate video on the pros and cons of dumb phone versus 'dumbed down' smart phone :)

I am very intrigued by your video. I grew up as a child in the late 70's and 80's. It was a wonderful time for us! Yes, people were more in tune with nature. You are very inspiring to me. I'm an artist too, but I enjoy doing composite photography. I used to use a real camera all the time and now I find I just whip out my phone. LOL I'm motivated to want to journal after watching you. And I love how you print the picture and add it. It's brilliant. I was diagnosed with ASD in 2021 and it's been quite the journey. When you say that if you had of been listening to a podcast when you were out walking Alphie, you would have missed so much, that was impactful. How different would this world be if we went back to those technologies? Thank you for making me think about something so intensely. It was a wonderful video.

I’m very interested in your journey to finding that balance. My spouse and I often discuss how we can find such a balance. I often tell them, “I love technology and what it can do for accessibility. I just don’t want to become a tool of the tool.” My spouse is more strict than I am, as they’re bitter about the amount of privacy we’re forced to give away with our use of technology. There’s less regulation of this in the U.S., and it’s so frustrating how much data apps are mining from us. It feels like there’s no privacy anymore. Like you-we want more time spent in solitude.

You quite literally articulated every single thing I’m sure a large majority of us are feeling in the most real & accurate way ever. Absolutely loved this video!
I’m currently in the process of reverse engineering my life, going back to analogue where necessary and have been implementing the things you have mentioned - kind of felt myself intuitively doing these things for some time now, but didn’t quite know where I was going amongst all the noise.
Technology is a blessing, but over the past few years I have seen just how much it has controlled us, and it’s not even our fault. I found myself in a chaotic loop, since the pandemic, of my life being out of control, feeling this quiet desperation of wanting my life to “go back” to its simplicity, but I just kept getting sucked into the digital world and the fear of what people around me would think if I chose to radically change my life - this obviously came from an extreme view - as you said - it’s not about one or the other, it’s about personal preference and a healthy balance, implementing changes overtime.
I feel like this video has, in finality, as a creative, as someone with anxiety, given me permission to step into what I’ve felt for the longest time without fear.

parallel societies dude. its always been a thing and will continue to be a thing. if we allow a space for analog again then we might not have to be obligated to use digital methods for everything like it is right now. technology just keeps progressing and then imposes its 'conveniences' on the whole society but not everyone asked for this.

I'm also intuitively getting to that point. It's so overwhelming and largely unnecessary. But I'm also torn because of how vital technology has become. As we've seen with how vital social media has been for effecting change on big situations by focusing our attention on important issues.

Hi Charlie, I've actually been thinking about this A LOT, specially about scrolling on social media. It feels like it brings me something, like a relief from existing in a body that easily gets overstimulated, but in the end it is a form of escaping the discomfort rather than regulation. And it gets me often more overstimulated, though that's hard to realise in the moment. It also feels like it might bring connexion, but it actually disconnects me from what's going on around me. And I also think it takes away time and mental space for things that would likely bring me more joy. I think it's specially difficult as someone with ADD because it's such an easy way to get dopamine, and I also don't do the other joyful things unless I have space to get bored and remember the ideas I've been having. I'm currently thinking of completely cutting off these things and try to see what happens, how I feel and I think your video has made me realise it's time. Thank you for sharing with us!

Love this idea! I wish I could go on walks without headphones but I live in a very overstimulating city 😅 But the idea of using technology intentionally is so important I think especially for us autistics who can get easily overwhelmed, not to mention the adhd getting addicted to all the dopamine. I’d love to see a video about your cd player!

So timely! Okay it's a UA-cam recommendation, I see the irony. 😂 However, the song "all a bit too loud" by Tom Rosenthal just hit my feed and it REALLY helped me slow down and feel seen and it's all about the overwhelming noise. There are many ND folks in the comments sharing how the song hits them. It's beautiful, I recommend it. 🎧 🫶🏻 Thanks for talking this through, I'd like to try and use my phone more intentionally as well. 🐶

I just finished reading "Digital Minimalism" by Cal Newport and I relate to what you said on such a deep level. What I struggle with is that nobody else in my surroundings seems to feel that way. Internet addiction is so destructive for me that I often cannot function anymore because of all the overwhelm, but other people all seem to handle modern technologies quite well even though they might be addicted from time to time...
This video made me feel seen. Thank you! Good luck for your journey. I'm joining you. :)

YESSSS I would love to see how this goes. I've also gotten back into (and had to realize that I enjoy) reading physical books, writing on paper, drawing on paper, using paper planners, etc. For me it was partly inspired by the books How to break up with your phone & digital minimalism, and partly inspired by thoughts I had while journaling about how I lived my life in college, when I was happiest. This is a bit out there (and I don't think I'll personally be using it) but my partner is so gung-ho he's planning on getting a literal typewriter LOL

I have been feeling the exact same way. Information overload, having a hard time making my own decision, seeing how I really feel vs consuming what everybody else is feeling, feeling like my attention span is not what it used to be. My husband said his new, old found love of reading books has really helped him with this. We also have a record player we recently bought and have been having a ball buying records at thrift stores. We buy board and card games to play and we have a collection of 500 dvds, almost every single one was thrifted. We throw out the case and put it in a dvd album that fits about 300. If we ever have an internet outage, we are set.

This is something I've been working on since I read Cal's book a few years ago. In the last couple days I've turned my phone back into something more reminiscent of Steve Job's original conception of the iPhone. Its got GPS, Notes, Calendar, reminders, budgeting app, as well as meditation, podcast, audiobook, and music (spotify) apps, but no social media, no games, no distracting stuff. This video came up in my recommended and I really agree with a lot of what you're saying. I've been stepping back a lot of my digital habits recently (am off virtually all social media now and thinking about a dumb phone) and trying to establish some kind of intentionality in how I use digital tools. My partner has to use social media and stuff for work at the moment so it feels meaningful that at least one of us is more offline, and she has better habits around digital media than I do overall. I don't have ASD but I have ADHD and as such I find it really easy to have an unhealthy engagement with media as part of my neurotype is feeling as though I always have to be doing/watching/listening to something, and because I have very high sensitivity (something I identify with you about) I often have a podcast, music or something playing over noise cancelling headphones, so it's hard to step back entirely, and I do consider things like my headphones a blessing for helping me live in a world that is too noisy - at least whatever I'm listening to is something I've chosen and can control. Anyways, all this to say this is really interesting and resonated with me a lot, and I'll be watching some more of your videos in the future!

love the passion here! recreated my youtube account and went from hundreds of subscriptions from a good decade of watching, a lot of them i would clear from the screen because i would watch only 1 every blue moon, to a reduced amount of around 35 now. these are now channels where i'm very aware of the value that is provided to me through them, i can get a quick overview of my chosen watchlist and have a sense of what these sources of influence that i'm diving into generally feel like, i take notes and i'm inspired enough to leave a comment. i've got a long way to go especially with screentime but it felt like a very helpful start to see and feel that change of that massive inbox of content shrinking down to what connects with me more presently

  • @sophiel2323
    @sophiel2323 5 місяців тому +2

This is definitely an interesting topic to me, sorry for the extra long comment! I think the main conflict I have with digital vs. analogue is that in my desire to be minimalistic I get anxious about waste and owning too much stuff, so I’ve justified doing all my journalling/scheduling and media storage digitally because it means I won’t have that physical stuff to worry about. But I feel like this is leading to a life of me depriving myself of things that bring me joy, like stationary! And a life of not really effectively processing and remembering what I’m doing because you’re made to constantly feel like you need to keep moving onto the next ‘thing’.
Films and music are special interests of mine and I do tend to easily fall into ‘gathering data’ mode and for that I love having so much scope to search, organise and compile all my films and music digitally. But I’m becoming increasingly aware that in using streaming services I’m not fully engaging with the actual music and films in a way that feels fulfilling, and I think removing those temptations to click on related artists etc. and to be more mindfully engaged with the media with no distraction would be really rewarding.
For notetaking, I recently have had some time (inspired by your videos hehe) to try more structured journalling in an old notebook rather than the app I usually use, and the difference in my mindset is night and day - just picking up my phone/tablet fills me with nervous energy as I get overwhelmed by the literally infinite possibilities for distraction. But sitting down with my notebook feels much more intentional and relaxing, a break from the chaos of being chronically online. I think this offers a much-needed space to process information in a way that apps just can’t.
So while I’m not sure what I’ll do with films and music yet, I think I’m definitely on board with abandoning all the fancy productivity tools and allowing myself some nice stationary!
Look forward to seeing your exploration of this next year :)

Isnt it sad all these things that have been "lost" in the modern world. What stands out most to me is the ability to just be silent, to just be in our own thoughts, we cant even sit nd wait for an appointment without a big TV screen in our faces. Things like home telephones, letter writing, DVDS and blockbusters, cassette tapes and cds, magazines, physical books.....the list goes on. We have so much noise and distraction now, its really sad. I loved this video! New subscriber here, looking forward to watching more of your content to see how you went with all of this :) First thing for me is dumbing down my phone, for good this time. There's some great videos on you tube about dumbing down smart phones so you dont have to go and buy an old phone.

It is nice to see that your hair has grown the last seven months of your absence. I really liked your long dark wavy hair. You describe the effects of media very well. I prefer to call it mass media propaganda. As you say it makes us feel overwhelmed in a loop with sensory overload. It presents us allowing time for ourselves. We become less attuned to ourself but more aware of what other people are doing and saying because technology is an addiction engineered for viewership. It takes away opportunities for our much needed solitude and may I also add our internal self dialogue which is also very important because it helps us make sense of our everyday events.
I also saw how the world changed from analogue to digital and even before that because I was also blessed to experience the 70's and 80's. I am a 1975 generation child. They were the good old days beyond analogue to be honest. people kept diaries, used landline phones and listened to the radio and waited for magazines and journals for news rather than just finding it on Google whenever they like which takes away the mystery, fun and anticipation in life. The best thing was having no mobile phones or the internet. You are so right about doing something more tangible with our body parts and being more involved with our environment rather than clicking on keyboards. For me CD players feel contemporary. For me audio tapes and records have a special feeling from the good old days.
I agree having no internet gives us a kind of permission to explore opportunities outside the bubble created by others. I now watch old fashioned movies and create a list of what to watch. Its my complete escapism and ways of motivating to get me through the week and into the weekend, I also read a lot of books now since I deleted myself from social media in 2018 but UA-cam is okay for educational and informative videos like yours.
I also agree being in the middle is better than being too open or shutting ourselves out to mass media. In semiotics which is the study of signs and perception they say there are three kinds of people as ones that let the world influence them, those that are gate keepers that only allow selective things to effect them and those that shut the world out.
I shut the world out completely to save myself when I became a victim of bullying on social media. I only started to peek out into the world just before the lockdown happened because I sensed a change coming in society before it all happened just like the animals that also sensed less danger from humans and started appearing in our communities. That was closest maybe to what we may experience of heaven on earth maybe at least on a local level but the mass media created havoc in the external environment within media and politics and we say riots etc. created and influenced by them.

I hear you on the walks without music. I always walk in silence now and it is fantastic.
I got rid of socials over a year ago and it was the best decision i made. I have more time, feel better about myself , and am enjoying offline hobbies - walking, reading, playing guitar. I still enjoy UA-cam but i am in control of the time i spend on here and only consume content that adds to my life.

I forgot to share! I have been using the Nokia 2780 for over 5 months now with only a two week break while I was traveling as I realized all the benefits of using a smart phone on vacation for GPS navigation, instagram messaging with new hostel friends, etc. In my day to day life at home though it's super overkill for me to have a smart phone in front of my face at all times. Since the switch to the flip phone I have actually phased into leaving my cell phone at home and just forwarding calls off of it to my work phone so I'll never miss emergencies. The BIGGEST issue I had with the dumbphone downgrade was going from regularly consuming podcast to seemingly having no easy on the go alternatives until this week! I just charged up and reformatted a 160gb ipod classic, plugged it into my 2020 mac mini, opened the podcast app on there and followed all the podcasts I care about and then opened finder, clicked on the ipod, and told it to sync all new podcasts in my library. Game changer. I am missing nothing in my day to day now really and it's encouraged me to try and borrow my friends old harddrives to scoop up their abandoned downloaded music collections and eventually put it all together to have a super iPod of my favorite music and regularly updated podcasts. so good. I carry a pocket notebook now too that has been immensely helpful for concentration and organization at work and just make notes in the back of the book here and there for reminders in my personal life. I highly recommend doing this! oh, and yes I also went the analog point and shoot route as photography is a fun hobby of mine and have been sending my photos off to be developed and scanned. It's helped me make my own exciting google photos photo albums that have such cool analog charm while also being easily accessible for reference and sharable to a friend if I want to show them something that comes up in conversation while also not feeling like I'm just taking and viewing photos for any other reason than enjoying photography and reminiscing about my experiences with friends. I also have a 2012 canon point and shoot that fits perfectly in my pocket that I'll take if I feel like I'm going somewhere for less meaningful photography and just fun times. Suppper long message, a simple was "I couldn't agree more" would have sufficed 😅

I have left all social media networks, except UA-cam and Tumblr. It is so freeing. All notifications are turned off, only calls and text will notify me.
80% of the contact with school is online, it is really horrible.
All the mail from the state, government, healthcare are online through 5 different apps and you have to use minimum 2 at the time.
It is horrible everyone has to own a smartphone here, it is horrible.

New subscriber here and was pleasantly surprised to see this topic pop up in your feed! I read Cal Newport's book years ago (have been wanting to revisit it!) and remember there being a lot of good takeaways and things to think about. I"m definitely interested to hear your thoughts about the 'dumb' phone, as I have debated that myself in the past but never went through with it. Wish there was a way to dumb down social media to turn off features we don't want (looking at you, algorithm) because I do think it can be a great way to find communities around the things you enjoy and a way to start conversations and make friends, but that effort is unfortunately bogged down by profit motives and addiction sadly.
All that to say I am happy to be here in your corner of the Internet and looking forward to future videos! (Oh and I just adore your hairstyle!!!) Cheers! ☺️

Hello :) I very much relate to your conflicts around social media. I wish there was a way of personalising it more than is currently available. I'm currently planning out a video on my thoughts on social media detoxes and whether or not I feel I want to keep social media in my life, so stay tuned! Oh and thanks for your kind words about my hair! :)

Ok this is such an interesting topic! You had my full attention😊 I really feel the same way and I even considered getting a dumb phone but it felt kind of weird?! I hope you share your thoughts on this too.

Does it work? Yes, it does. If you listen to neuroscientists, psychologists, and other professionals in the area, they will explain everything about the benefits of living offline. I am doing the same that you are doing and it's been an amazing experience. Is it fun? not all the time, but is it satisfying? Totally. The dopamine delays to come, but when it comes, it's satisfying. I love reading, and I'm trying to start drawing.
Some times it's hard, mainly when you have nothing to do and you know that the digital stuff is available to entertain you. But it's important to say NO, because you know that it's not good for you. I have deleted so many things and apps from my life, but I still need to improve a lot. But it's a great journey, healthier for us.
What I do to keep this life going is by reading and listening to the reasons why it's better to live that way haha. It's like searching "Why is this food bad to us" just to remember why you are doing that.

This is such an interesting video and I can relate to how overwhelming the online world can be. Where did you purchase your CD and DVD player? Its something I might consider myself 💕

My biggest concern- how do I bank without a phone- everytime I purchase something or send money everything needs to be confirmed on my phone (is it possible to bank with a flip phone, I’m so sick of this iPhone)

I remeber a book taht came out… in 2006 or 8 or something about how our hands are extentions of our brain and in using hamds is growing and developing the whole brain - of course cant rememebr the name of the book! 😅

It's such a great feeling to know I'm not alone in this thinking. Everything you said is what I've been feeling. I started my journey to go analogue last year and genuinely, I have never been happier. I still use tech, but I'm far more picky about it. It's a personal choice and some people find it odd but I it hasn't hindered me at all.

Too many choices, even in the dental care aisle!

Very interesting thoughts. Do you ever worry about the seduction of nostalgia? If the desire to pivot back to analogue is the innate human bias to glorify the “good old days”? It’s something I think about…

    • @charlierewilding
      @charlierewilding  4 місяці тому +1

ah 'the good old days' - for me, personally, it's not something I'm worried about. I don't tend to think too much about the past; my reasons for changing my behaviour around technology now are more to do with my current needs. What are your concerns?

  • @selah5792
    @selah5792 5 місяців тому +1

I think the people who are living in ‘the middle’ dont show up online becasue of how technology works - it can be one of the costs of being in the ‘middle’ is youre not extreme so it doenst get into the algorythm. Substack seems to have a good place for ‘middle’ people 😊

    • @charlierewilding
      @charlierewilding  5 місяців тому

This is so true! The algorithm favours the extremes and therefore (imo) encourages more extreme outlooks and behaviour over time.

I deliberately stayed away from spotify and netflicks. I am a bit of a youtube junkie but I have started unsubscribing from nice guys who make excellent videos but whose topics are not in my core interests. I have also unsubscribed from most websites and my junkmail has got very close to zero. I want to try and prevent advertising and marketing from having an ability to influence my choices. HORROR! Defines your core interests and evaluate everything by how it relates to those. I am a structural engineer and a RC modeller who also has a good metal and woodwork workshop. My core interests are well defined but even so the sirens of digital are very load!
