    I'm not that smart, but my Dad taught me to use my brain to entertain myself when bored pre-cellphones. I still make myself practice it when I'm in a waiting room or sometimes on my breaks at work. As a kid, he taught me to count things, find patterns in the stuff around me, play mental math games, stuff like that. As an adult, when I'm surrounded by people, I sometimes just listen or watch what they're doing and think about why they might be doing it. I call it practicing being bored and it blows people's minds that I do it on purpose.

      Sometimes (nah prolly all the time) this kind of slower concious thinking has helped me become calmer and more aware of things in general. Scrolling is like eating just to eat, rather than satiating oneself.
      prolly this new year, following this 'practicing boredom' may save me fr along with the thoughts that come along to be notes in my tiny notebook :))

    So boredom is basically your brain being hungry for mental stimulation which is why reading books, nature walks, deep thinking and contemplating ideas is a lot healthier for your mind than scrolling through instagram (junk food for your mind if you will)

      I think it depends on what you read and how you read it. When scrolling on your phone you are giving your attention to constant changing stimulus, that jumps from unrelated topics or creators, many of these stimulating topics are more engineered to grab your attention than be a well crafted experience on their own.
      With physical reading, you have to choose your own texts, so that eliminates an algorithm to suggest things for you, and when you really engage in stories or essays or educational texts I think you really start to understand what information truly feeds your brain and what doesn't, who's writing with strong intention behind each word versus who is trying to pump out entertainment. Another bonus is that reading books teaches you to engage in long term experiences and commitments to reach satisfaction. Your phone teaches you to seek out short term pleasures that half satisfy you, a lot of entertainment on your phone is given as an alternative to boredom, to distract yourself from having to think, while reading physical books encourages you to think actively and be more present in the activity.

    I never thought of stoicism as controlling your emotions, but controlling your reactions to your emotions. Being a stoic isn't about being emotionless but having a healthy relationship with your emotions.

    • @ParkerNotes
      @ParkerNotes  Рік тому +179

      I gues it depends on who you ask. The core concept is you can't control external things but only internal things. This seems cool until you consider the Stoic metaphysics, they're materialists or physicalists. That coupled with their fatalism seems to me to entail that one actually has no control over internal things after all. Your emotions, or your reactions to your emotions as you suggest, are likewise determined by things outside your control, namely the neural chemistry in your head and not necessarily the virtuous reasons you think you have in your mind. That's the gist of my concern. I raised it to Dr. Michael Tremblay who has his PhD in Stoic philosophy, on my podcast if you're interested in seeing his response.

      Internal everything, technically speaking, is and will be , never in our control. ( one needs to internalise that first)
      Our reactions aren't either.
      But controlling the expression of those reactions are.
      That's what Stoicism is all about.

    i found this video eye - opening...i'm the type of person to have 238743 million thoughts going through my head at all times , even when i'm sitting there doing nothing , when i'm on a walk or just brushing my teeth. philosophical thoughts, spiritual thoughts, thoughts about my original characters/stories or the media i like... i never need to carve to out time for contemplation. it's another realization that my brain works differently from the majority of people (i'm neurodivergent) but i often forget my interesting thoughts and ideas as soon as i enter another room or start a different task . i think i should carry a tiny notebook around at all times to help capture and organize my thoughts...thanks for the video!

    As someone with ADHD, boredom is always something I have attempted to flee from. My phone and social medias have always been so dangerous, filling my mind with so much stimulus to where I can’t function without it. I never thought of how letting my brain just “be” could be beneficial. I was actually planning on taking a little mental break from my phone in just a couple of days. However, as sad as it sounds, I have been worried about how I will function while cutting off some things that are now daily habits to me. I tend to get more emotional and make regrettable choices in my boredom. But now, I’m willing to see what happens when I try. This video had just confirmed that I can surely figure it out alternate things to do that’ll be beneficial to me. Thank you for this video. God bless

      I'm in the same boat! I've been reading 'Digital Minimalism' by Cal Newport, which gives you a very non-judgemental, tried-and tested way to be more meaningful with how we use technology in our daily lives (without just dropping it all). It's been helpful, and made me realise some things about myself! I recommend :)

    • @bitrudder3792

      I remember loving to go to bed as a child and teen because I didn’t have so many distractions around me, and I could think about all kinds of interesting thoughts after reading in a book that I enjoyed. It was nice to be free from the distractions of the every day. I had to work myself up to paying attention to things that I wasn’t interested in. I could do it, But sometimes found distractions to escape. With ADHD, isn’t it easy to pay attention to what you want to pay attention to?

    • @mathilda6763
      @mathilda6763 3 місяці тому

      @@bitrudder3792 I think it's more that it's easy to concentrate on something your brain wants to focus on.
      It isn't always the thing you want to focus on. ADHD people also have jobs or education and have to do stuff they want to do because it benefits them in their education or to sustain themselves, but that might not be what their current interest is so that interest is pulling away from what they want to do.
      Plus all the ADHD friends that I have do have a hard time staying on task because the new interesting thing that promises a new dopamine rush will pull away from the thing that interested them before.
      ADHD people also often take in and filter sensory input differently than neurotypical people, which means they might not notice important things like hunger, the time passing or needing a break on one side but might notice minute details or information that other neurotypes might miss who have a more even distribution of focus on their tasks, their (current) interests, their needs and their environment.

    One of my biggest reasons for turning to scrolling is that I DON'T want to think, it really serves as an escape (albeit a pretty unproductive and ultimately unsatisfactory one). This is one of the reasons I barely write in my journal anymore. I love the idea of keeping notebooks and thinking deeper, but what would you suggest for someone who wants to try this out but is kind of afraid of that process of knowing themselves deeper?

    • @ParkerNotes
      @ParkerNotes  Рік тому +814

      I'd suggest going slow. Collect thoughts from others at like a 9:1 ratio. And reflect on those either in the notebook itself or in your mind. Slowly start unraveling your own self in the process after every 9 entries. Be kind to yourself and take it slow. No one is reading this but you, no one is looking over your shoulder even though it may feel like that at first. Don't pretend to be someone else. But yeah take it slow and consider the thoughts of others which inspire you first

      If you just want to turn your brain off (I feel you) I‘d also suggest reading. It’s incredibly relaxing for the body and even when you are reading well not literary masterpieces it’s still engaging your brain in a positive way. And if you want to think a bit you could read something more educational and then use that as achromatic to journal a bit about your thoughts about the book or what you want to remember from it etc.

I'll look back and laugh and I actually like how it adds to my creativity over time. I am my target audience 😅

      Zoeycat2646 I see you mention Journaling dreams and also "messing up" your journals. I bet mine are just as messy! However i wanted to share a couple thoughts. First, cherish those dream journals, the study of one's own dreams is so beneficial to creativity and basic mental health. 2--consider using loose leaf, lined paper and hold yourself to writing inside the margins. In other words, DONT write in those columns on either side of the paper. When you go back and re-read your Journaling, you can circle the themes and important nuggets that have come up and make notes about these themes in the margins. Another thing to try for more organization is on one side write what happened. Just the facts of the day. On the other side write what you think and feel about all of it. These practices have really cleaned up my journals and made them so useful and more a source for learning and insight. Happy journaling!

God bless

    I need to thank you for this video. And I want to explain how it helped me.
    Usually whatever I write in my journal, I never read. I write mostly when I am sad, and later I never feel like revisiting the words written in such state of mind.
    However, in this video when you mentioned about building on a particular thought when feeling bored. I thought of my "writings" and opened the pages of my journal, and I read the entire thing. I was kind of surprised at times about what I have written, it sort of moved me.
    I saw a pattern in my writing. In the beginning I pour down my feelings and then look for a way on how to resolve whatever is bothering me. It's not philosophical like yours. I cannot write like you. But for some reason I always thought that my journal will be nothing but full of shallow ramblings. But today I found some meaning; that my cup is not empty.

Then there is room to grab one for whatever set of topics don’t fit into my “reading” (accountability for thoughts on current books and perhaps why reading through is not going to happen), home journal (where does time go in the day, cooking, cleaning, videos, tv, reading, must/want/need to dos, etc.), memory scripture, devotional & prayer. I have so may ideas about myself and the world around me outside of my creative brain that I know I should write them out more often. I feel this! Always making connections and synthesizing ideas I think belong together! Glad to hear I'm not alone

    I've started thinking that one of the most important skills in today's society is to be comfortable with boredom. Thanks for sharing unique approach to this, I'll definitely try this out! Have a nice day:)

    I appreciate your approach to combating doomscrolling very much. I use notebooks of several very different types to keep track of my tasks, to CONTEMPLATE on my achievements and ambitions, to draw funny cats whenever somebody annoys me, to conspect what I learn from books/lectures, to work on things I want to publish on my blog or elsewhere etc.

    This is a cool idea, but I think it’s good to take a break from thinking sometimes too. I’m always thinking & contemplating about life & myself, so sometimes it feels good to take a break from thinking deeply.

    I'm so happy I found your channel! I'm definitely going to start this. I have a habit of scrolling on my phone first thing in the morning, so using this notebook I'll keep it by my bed and my phone out of sight, then when I get up in the morning I can look through the notebook instead!

    Thank you for this amazing insight. Stumbled across your video at the right time. I feel this habit is going to be the one with highway compounding returns overall. I am going to save it in my playlist and whenever I'll be tempted to scroll my life away, I'll come back to this video! Absolutely grateful for sharing this 🩶

    You might like Georg Christoph Lichtenberg's notebooks, its another aphoristic work, probably one of the first that specifically was for aphorisms.
    Lichtenberg had a normal daily journal. Yet it was aphorisms that ended up becoming influential. Both Nietzsche and Wittgenstein took inspiration from him on writing their works in the aphoristic style, like Nietzsche's Twilight of the Idols.
    Even people as disparate as Tolstoy and Einstein appreciated his writings the work of the highest mind.
    One of my favorites, "Careful observation of nature and of mathematics is certainly the most effective specific against madness."

    New to your channel but so excited to see what all you’re doing! I’ve been so fed up with how much time I waste on my phone for a while and I’m finally trying to pull away from it - definitely going to try to take this video to heart and stop using my phone mindlessly! 🤔
