I always found Traverse Town to be extremely calming and cozy. I first played the game when I was around 8 or 9 and there were a few things that really scared me when I was a kid (Hollow Bastion and the final world mainly). After hitting each save spot I'd always come to Traverse Town and just walk around and relax a little before moving on. I'm really sad at how empty the worlds have become from KH2 onwards, even KH3 feels rather empty in several areas. Looking for those fun little secrets in each place was one of my favorite things about KH1. This analysis was really fun to watch :)
I disagree about some of KH3. The original worlds were too small though, but they have tons of detail. I went around looking at everything in Scala ad Caelum and Twilight Toen and there are details everywhere. Like all the posters on the walls. The out of bounds stuff people found in Verum Rex were nuts too and I loved all the Easter eggs in Hercules and Toy Story.

I'm so glad you're making videos like this and exploring these wonderful and strange aspects of the original Kingdom Hearts. The imagination and heart of this game is incredible. Some thoughts I'll share that I had while watching: The ship motif throughout that you mentioned early (like in the posters) makes a lot of sense as this is a world of people "shipwrecked," stranded away from home and waiting for their journey back to their respective worlds. I don't know if it's the *same* image or a very similar one, but I'm pretty sure the bird icons on the spinning wall fixture in the Gizmo shop look a lot like a particular bird symbol on one of the Station of Awakening stained glass platforms (it's in a circle on the outside with other symbols). There's probably more bird imagery in KH than I can think of off the top of my head - The fledgling bird, leaving the next... "Sora," wind, taking flight... It just fits. I don't think this is actually intended to be the case, but the "18:00 in the past" painting reminds me of the tree with the swing on the hill in 100 Acre Wood - and perhaps to the left of the tree, in front of it, is Pooh bear himself (could be "from the past" because Pooh/100 Acre Wood is related to childhood, looking back on your memories). I appreciate your attention to sound details and the mix of dark, creepy aspects with warm, cozy details. There are so many rooms and places in Traverse Town we may wish to see and wish to be able to explore, and it's so fantastic that we *can't* but can imagine still that there's always *more*, always something just beyond our view... So much love and attention went into making this world living and breathing. Not nearly enough people talk about the details that make Kingdom Hearts (original) so special. Thank you for sharing this kind of content for everyone to appreciate! :) P.S.: From one KH fan to another, I'm curious: What do you think Traverse Town was like before the Heartless started swallowing worlds? Did Traverse Town exist before, with a lot of these same buildings and places - and if so, are there people who are *from* Traverse Town, or was it creepily abandoned when the first refugees arrived? How much was already here, and how much did people build (like Geppetto's house) to bring a little bit of that feeling of home to their temporary residence?
It's definitely a good question. I feel like since Nomura said the town can reshape itself according to the inhabitants needs, that gives me the impression that maybe in its raw form its just the basic aspects of the town, the red roofed buildings, maybe not a lot of decoration. The people in it is also very interesting, because I have to wonder if for example, the hotel assistant at the desk was a refugee and just decided to work at the hotel, or if they're a fundemental part of the town. Maybe the town was originally a normal one in the realm of light, and was transformed into what it is now - maybe when the keyblade war shattered the one world, this town was chosen as a designated refugee world and ended up in the realm between 🤔
The ship theme could also be part of the destiny islands theme where characters long to cross an ocean. Sora, Kairi and Riku build a raft and the last boss turns onto a flying battleship. And captain hooks ship is a level. Pirate worlds ended up recurring theme in most KH games too.

Hello, I really enjoyed this, and although it's a minor detail and you probably already know but in the original Kingdom Hearts, you could hear a owl hooting outside Merlin's house, I wonder why they removed it. Please do other worlds, also my favorite world in all the games is The World That Never Was in KH2, it's just so mysterious with all the buildings.
Wow dude this is amazing, i didn't know about this, i watchted a walkthrough of kh1 in the ps2 just to hear this and besides the owl there's also the water sound, so beautiful. They removed a lot of nice things from the original game and it makes me a little bit angry and sad, but okay :)
As a kid I loved Traverse Town (I've always said Trav-ers, rather than Tr-uh-verse). It felt familiar, I loved the music, and it almost felt like a relief after some of the other worlds as a kid that may have given me trouble. Even though it wasn't the most optimal (which I didn't even think about at that age) I always used the Gizmo Shop as a level grinding area.
Honestly the best thing about this video is just your soft voice with the Traverse Town theme in the background as you explain all the details cx KH1 Traverse Town to me has the most comfortable feel to it out of all the others I like how they expanded this world so much in DDD but every single room has battles in it and it's not as fun to go through and explore, especially because of the drop system not really allowing you to
Traverse Town is such a lovely city. The soft lighting at night, brick and cobblestone buildings, and calming music all just feel like home. Wouldn't mind living there, apart from there being heartless there.
What I find really odd about many KH worlds, especially in KH1, is that the worlds are heavily detailed, but due to lack of resources on older consoles, they’re often devoid of NPCs. Lots of games at this time were, but due to the incredible attention to detail in each world, there’s a level of liminality that sort of creeps me out. Once you take out all the heartless in the 2nd and 3rd districts, everything just seems... off. It’s slightly eery, and it contrasts heavily with the super calm and catchy music. KH2 has more npcs, but not enough to make it immersive, so it’s in this grey area where things aren’t as detailed but there’s at least some people to fill it out. KH3 has this similar problem (except of course Corona, which is my favorite world).
I'm still watching so I don't know if you're gonna cover it, but there is rumored to be a residential district between 2nd and 3rd as the doors are completely different from each side, and there is a house in the 2nd district just before this. Plus it would make a lot of sense considering there are meant to be refugees somewhere in town
@@NovayonKH Likewise. A friend of mine was making the town in Minecraft and came to the same conclusion that there must be a space between, even if it's just a small gap. What's great is it kinda lines up by sizes. 2nd is very long so there must be something to bridge the gap to make the 3rd meet the 1st.
I love your kingdom hearts videos so much. As someone who hasn’t been able to play all the games growing up, so I become an expert at the first game, it’s great seeing people who still care about the first game :)
Just thought I'd drop a comment to say that this is one of my favorite KH videos on the whole Internet - I write a lot of fic that takes place in Traverse Town, and I obviously don't want to fire up my console every single time I need to check something, so thank you for cataloguing all the little details; this way I can cross-check them as research any old time I wish.
Love the video man! I hope one day you make a Deep Dive Exploration video for Hollow Bastion in KH1. KH1's Hollow Bastion is my favorite KH original world!
I've been enjoying your content lately and just wanna say thanks for making these videos. I've loved KH since I was a little girl and still play through the series now and then. No other game has captured the feeling of mystery and adventure quite as well as KH did. 💙
I actually enjoyed exploring Traverse Town when I was playing this game on my PS2. I remember visiting each district including Merlin’s rental house. And the hotel rooms were fun too because it felt like I was exploring an actual hotel within a fantasy town.
Traverse Town will always feel like home to me, honestly. I think it's pretty wholesome that there's a whole world dedicated solely to housing people who've lost their worlds, and I like to think on some sappy, metaphorical level, we all have our own little Traverse Town. The existence of pretty much every resident of TT gets my imagination going, wondering where they could have come from and what their world having been destroyed means for the universe of KH. Especially the TWEWY characters in DDD's TT, particularly when you take into account they may well have come from the same Square Enix world Yozora came from (or at least a nearby world in its worldline.)
Listening to you gush about Traverse Town made me remember why I loved the KH series so much growing up. It's the little things and getting to explore, this made me feel so nostalgic! Also this may be a reach but the 18:00 in the past "Time Flies" painting reminds me of 100 acre wood I dunno
Most of the artifacts in Merlin's house are seen in The Sword in the Stone. For example, the chalkboard has letters on it because it was used to teach Arthur how to write!
Traverse Town is easily the most nostalgic world in KH to me. Twilight Town doesn't come near close of giving me this feeling of peace, adventure and mystery that Traverse Town gives. I had such an incredible time exploring each area and finding its secrets, letting my imagination roam free as to what lies inside each store and house. Too bad they never brought it back, but, to be honest, I doubt that KH 3 would ever make this world justice.
i never noticed how much the world designers took inspiration from actual Disneyland, like i totally just realized the gizmo shop is probably based off the it’s a small world ride. the clothing stores also remind me of disneyland gift shops and just the way the architecture looks very castle-like.
*If* Kingdom Hearts somehow manages to make a remake of sorts in about 20-30 years time they'd better do Traverse Town justice. I hate that this place is so empty (save for the 1st District) despite being aesthetically pleasing. Imagine a bunch of NPCs walking around the shops etc I really want to see that with all the random background dialogue
Traverse town, for some reason, always reminds me of Disneyland Paris (that’s the one I know and love best). Disney seems to have this aesthetic, and traverse town would fit right in. The surreal, the weird, the wacky, but ultimately functional and recognisable architecture. The cosyness, the Victorian feel of many of the houses, buildings in area 1 that look straight out of fantastyland (look at the building in the queue for peter plans flight!!). It makes me nostalgic, happy and gives me these feelings of home.
I never really think about it much because Traverse Town is so well-lit due to its artificial lighting but it really is pretty impressive and one of my favorite parts of KH1. One of my favorite aesthetics is eternal night filled with artificial lighting.
I would love to live in Traverse Town, being able to go to the second district and sit in the courtyard. Until my child comes up to me saying "look what I found" and it's a whole Heartless 😩
Always had a thought about the speakers in Traverse as a kid. They are warning alarms for when a tsunami of Heartless is detected approaching the town.
Also it appears in BBS on Ven's old Dive to the Heart, before he meets Aqua and Terra for the first time. It is later replaced with the mark of mastery emblem.
I miss being able to look around in first person. Most 3D games from this era have it but I feel like modern games are trying to hide their details or something. Player characters are more zoomed out on average too. Strange considering how much work it takes to create modern high-poly 3D models.
Did anyone else know that Pinocchio appears in Traverse Town before visiting Monstro? I sure didn't! I just noticed him to the left as you walk in the accessory shop (I just completed Agrabah and returned to get the synthesize shop)
I think the 6:00PM in the past picture may be referring to The 100 Acre Woods but I'm not entirely sure. Doesn't make much sense since The 100 Acre Woods isn't actually a world but indeed a book.
What i've always been curious about, is the Shooting Star shaped door in the 3rd District (blue with a yellow outline, in between the wires and the door to the 1st District). I remember the first time I played, every time I had to return to TT, I would check to see if it had opened and it never did. It's just decorative, but it feels like there should be something there to me
I hope in like KH4 or something we get 3 big things 1. Play as Riku, we did it in CoM and 3D but those games were somewhat gimmicky, so I want a KH3 gameplay with Riku as the lead 2. Expanding Traverse Town and Twilight Town. As Riku, he is a Keyblade Master, he should be able to quickly figure out how to travel to both of these and he seems more agile than Sora and more buff so his free roaming should be on par with KH3 Sora, or faster, and both of these TT areas DESERVE expansions 3. Xenoblade world. Can you imagine a keyblade that acts like the Monado? Out of battle it looks like a red sword but in battle it cracks open to reveal a plasma blade shaped like a keyblade? Shit would be dope.
Hot dogs could be so pronounced because this is where you first run into Squall/Leon. FF8 has a lot of referring to hotdogs in it because Balamb Garden's best dish is their hot dogs.
25:28 i thought the green room was being rented by the ff crew? also, clearly then the red room was being rented by the heartless found there. and then the other two rooms have people(i know there's nothing to use to guess, but i'm gonna guess moogles) asleep in them. 29:10 for some reason, the instant though i get from that painting, and its name, is hundred acre woods. also, i noticed a detail of, in some of the areas you can fight heartless, some of the ground-level doors you can't go through actually being blocked with wood at the top(probably because of the aforementioned heartless). 34:04 for some reason, i can't escape the idea of seeing, specifically, leon/squall putting up all the paintings for the dalmations. also, for some reason, the dalmations are really creepy and uncanny. the way they move and act but not really move or act is just.
Ya know... Traverse Town is a pretty underrated world... too bad that KH3 no longer has FF cameos... the only mention of FF characters is in Olympus, when the narrator mentioned Auron and Cloud in the beginning cutscene of 2.9...

I remember being so excited about them when they were first shown off way back when in 2011/2012, but my memory of them is kind of hazy now, since I haven't played the game since it was released. (I have 2.8, but I never played through HDDDD because I wanted to rush through the new stuff lol)
@@NovayonKH I'd love to see a video on that so much! I just watched your video and I'm going to explore DDDs Traverse Town ASAP. When you dive into that world you can see how massive it is from the background.
i bet the item shop was designed to looked like it was decorated by Huey, Dewey, and Louie Edit: the symbols seen around the 12: 24 remind me of the Fleur-de-lis; a symbol from French heraldry used by royalty (according to wiki)

@@SSJRoxas no real good reason. 😅 More of an old joke between friends. We used to call any dark or edgy character in an rpg a "darkus".
Actually didn't know about that, how interesting
@@NovayonKH Likewise. A friend of mine was making the town in Minecraft and came to the same conclusion that there must be a space between, even if it's just a small gap. What's great is it kinda lines up by sizes. 2nd is very long so there must be something to bridge the gap to make the 3rd meet the 1st.
Thanks for gushing about this game
I’ve never had played a kingdom hearts game before, this style of video just really appealed to me
im bored in lockdown and making traverse town in Minecraft so this video helped a lot with the little details lmao thank u
I love your kingdom hearts videos so much. As someone who hasn’t been able to play all the games growing up, so I become an expert at the first game, it’s great seeing people who still care about the first game :)
46 minutes dedicated to covering the best Kingdom Hearts world. Thank you for this video.
Traverse Town always gave me a nostalgic feeling of when I was seven, and went to Disney World for the first time.
Sure thing, I kinda cringe at this old video nowadays, especially the commentary, but I'm glad it can still be useful
The creepy portrait...is the Master of Masters DUN DUN DUUN!!!!
this is amazing! please keep making in depth videos about all of the care and detail put into kh1 worlds! and the longer the video the better imo ♡
I haven’t even noticed most of this. I really appreciate that you take your time to show others nice secrets.
This video is exactly what I was looking for, in-depth analysis and appreciation of this lovely world
i've been writing a sherlock-esque mystery on traverse town. this video was a lot of help. thanks!
Very nice, dude! Can't wait for when you go crazy enough to do one on Hollow Bastion!
I LOVE TRAVERSE TOWN I wish they brought it back in more of the main games, awesome videos glad I found your channel!
Cool video! A few details I'd never noticed before, even though I've played the heck out of it.
I actually enjoyed exploring Traverse Town when I was playing this game on my PS2. I remember visiting each district including Merlin’s rental house. And the hotel rooms were fun too because it felt like I was exploring an actual hotel within a fantasy town.
this town and Twilight Town are my favorite worlds to spend hours running around in. They both have such cozy vibes to them I love it
Traverse Town will always feel like home to me, honestly.
This Was really relaxing! Watched the whole video while working on my Laptop. Thanks :)
This video made me truly appreciate this world
Traverse town better be coming back in kingdom hearts 4. I love twilight town but Traverse town is iconic
You have a similar voice to Darryl from final fantasy union. Very calming and perfect for these type of videos.
i never noticed how much the world designers took inspiration from actual Disneyland, like i totally just realized the gizmo shop is probably based off the it’s a small world ride. the clothing stores also remind me of disneyland gift shops and just the way the architecture looks very castle-like.
Wow the kid at 3:03 is a recolor of tidus too. I wonder how that's going to come back in KH4
The virgin KH2 levels vs the chad Traverse Town
I never really think about it much because Traverse Town is so well-lit due to its artificial lighting but it really is pretty impressive and one of my favorite parts of KH1. One of my favorite aesthetics is eternal night filled with artificial lighting.
Nice channel man enjoying your KH content a lot, subbing for future videos keep it up!
I would love to live in Traverse Town, being able to go to the second district and sit in the courtyard. Until my child comes up to me saying "look what I found" and it's a whole Heartless 😩
@ 42:40 I always thought the box with the pumpkin on it might be a nod to Cinderella's carriage or even Halloween Town
I'm glad I found other people also obsessed with Traverse Town XD
Always had a thought about the speakers in Traverse as a kid. They are warning alarms for when a tsunami of Heartless is detected approaching the town.
Amazing video keep up the good work.
Finally someone else shares my sentiment
I always called it Trevor's town when I was a kid. Good memories
a hubworld like traverse town is something i really miss in kh games
This world has always been my favorite.
The 'random symbol' is a fleur-de-lis.
Pretty sure it's a three musketeers reference, which makes sense given the whole 'all-for-one' shtick.
2:27 goofy: 🤠
When I was young I would always mispronounce it and call it Taverns Town... because it has that Bar/Tavern feel to it XD
Keep going!

Did anyone else know that Pinocchio appears in Traverse Town before visiting Monstro? I sure didn't! I just noticed him to the left as you walk in the accessory shop (I just completed Agrabah and returned to get the synthesize shop)
29:05 seems to me like a thing about Winnih Pooh. The Tree on the hill looks kind of like that
I think the 6:00PM in the past picture may be referring to The 100 Acre Woods but I'm not entirely sure.
It's just decorative, but it feels like there should be something there to me
Doesn't Leon enlist you to help find the puppies? I think I remember that.
I hope in like KH4 or something we get 3 big things
1. Play as Riku, we did it in CoM and 3D but those games were somewhat gimmicky, so I want a KH3 gameplay with Riku as the lead
2. Expanding Traverse Town and Twilight Town. As Riku, he is a Keyblade Master, he should be able to quickly figure out how to travel to both of these and he seems more agile than Sora and more buff so his free roaming should be on par with KH3 Sora, or faster, and both of these TT areas DESERVE expansions
34:04 for some reason, i can't escape the idea of seeing, specifically, leon/squall putting up all the paintings for the dalmations.
also, for some reason, the dalmations are really creepy and uncanny. the way they move and act but not really move or act is just.
this was so cosy
RiverBoat was an old TV series in '59 that's what the poster is referencing
In case no one answered your question, the paintings tell you the different times you must hit on the clock for the reward.
The mad hatter has his own shop in traverse town making him the only character who knows about other worlds who doesn't really have a reason to
fun fact, in the msnga the womsn in district one, sora bumps into her in district two where she propositions sora then gets attacked by a heartless
I think Traverse Town is the perfect first level after a tutorial like Destiny Islands.
Ya know... Traverse Town is a pretty underrated world... too bad that KH3 no longer has FF cameos... the only mention of FF characters is in Olympus, when the narrator mentioned Auron and Cloud in the beginning cutscene of 2.9...
You can also run into the candles with Aero.
The area at 4:10, the barren wall is later where the doorway to the back streets is..
I love your videos! I've been watching for a while, but I don't think I've actually commented before now...
Will you eventually do the Sleeping Districts from DDD, too? I remember being so excited about them when they were first shown off way back when in 2011/2012, but my memory of them is kind of hazy now, since I haven't played the game since it was released. (I have 2.8, but I never played through HDDDD because I wanted to rush through the new stuff lol)
When I get around to playing through and recording that game, it's definitely a possibility
@@NovayonKH I'd love to see a video on that so much! I just watched your video and I'm going to explore DDDs Traverse Town ASAP. When you dive into that world you can see how massive it is from the background.
@@NovayonKH Nice!!
You gonna play DDD again? I thought this HD port was pretty good. I had only played a Demo of DDD on the 3DS back in 2012.
Cash registers actually existed before electricity was widespread. they used mechanical parts to add up totals and print receipts.
i bet the item shop was designed to looked like it was decorated by Huey, Dewey, and Louie
Edit: the symbols seen around the 12: 24 remind me of the Fleur-de-lis; a symbol from French heraldry used by royalty (according to wiki)
i think some of the things hanging in the item shop aren't supposed to be mirrors, but picture frames, and just the glass looking shiny but you can't see the picture? idk
15:00 i'm pretty sure there was a chest up there, containing either puppies or a postcard. 'exploring without rewards' my a**.
17:40 again, there was treasure there, reachable by a trinity below.
Would you do this with the other worlds as well? I really enjoyed this video
I actually wonder if you put the fire out in the shop, if the smoke will still come out of the chimney..
