SOAD.... have always been ahead of their time. The subject matter of most of their songs, are eerily still accurate.
It's because it's always been like this
Yep they always told it how it really was! That's what I always loved about them. This album was fuel to my anarchist teen years for sure.
not as much ahead of their time as right on point. It just happens that their messages are universal because nothing changes.
@PRC533 I agree. They were certainly one of the bands that spoke on a lot of topics that were big to speak of during the 70's. Bands kind of stopped being so forward about their political views in the late eighties. That may be incorrect but that's what it seemed like to me. Because of all the music in the 70's I grew older with a very anti mindset. I remember being very excited once I realized what SOD was singing about. It certainly fueled my rebellious tendencies during my adolescence.
This is the song that a lot of us discovered SOAD with. JUST SUGAR!!
Don't get me wrong I love SOAD, tons of songs over many years. But the experience of hearing this song on the radio when there was nothing even remotely close to sounding like this before, was like a new world opening up. (yes we used to listen to fm radio lol)
@ks5553 Yes, exactly, FM and Cds was how we consumed songs like this.
Ya dude I was in my car and literally beelined it to the nearest record store 🤣🤣 That 1st album, DAUMN 🤘
First song I heard from them. I was f'ing with it for sure
@JeremyOuelletteNH that's an awesome story
SOAD - Prison song is so wild lyrically. They have always been so ahead of their time.
Minor drug offenders fill your prisons you don't even flinch, all or taxes paying for your wars against the new non rich.
yeah. sadly it wasn't ahead of that time its just the same stuff from 30 yrs ago is still happening
This is my generation of music and I agree. I love 70s and 80s, but the 90s and 00s produced some of the best videos and artistic songs
Every Decade has probably had some of the best songs… Obviously music videos only really got going around the 70s though.
100%
All my favorite eras too . Nothing like that anymore or at least I don’t know about it
Proud Armenian here :) SOAD is known by ALL ARMENIANS. 😁
How the situation in Armenia? Wanna go there.❤
One of the kids in my classes mom was helping in our class and she saw my toxicity shirt and she said she went to camp once with shavo
Yes they sure are!
You ain't tripping. SOAD is once in a lifetime art we got to experience, and to be honest, we didn't appreciate them *enough* back then. At least I didn't, even as a fan. Their stuff I understand so much deeper as an adult, the hogh class unique music and his opera trained voice, the Armenian folk integrations, but his lyrics!!!
You might enjoy a video by Musora where twins (Fionn) cover Toxicity on the spot. It's soooo good and shows how their folk integrations can relate to other folk music, how solid and exciting their musical writing is.
nailed it bro totally agree
Loved SOAD when they were newly on the radio, and love them even more now. Having had a long journey through folk metal from a bunch of countries I came back to them and now I would almost count SOAD in that genre. The number of Armenian folk music traits in their songs is awesome!
I truly was obsessed with the album their debut album I listen to it for a year I don't think most of my friends understood my complete and total devotion to that album
Same. I didn’t appreciate it when i was in high school but I understand now
You've got to keep exploring System of a Down. From Prison Song to Deer Dance to Soldier Side to Attack to Boom, and more, SOAD has pushed the envelope and challenged the Establishment since the 90s. That, and the fact that Serj's voice is completely unique, is why they're my favorite band 23 years after I first heard them.
War, Spiders, Revenga, Loney Day, Aerials, BYOB, Chop Suey, Toxicity, Radio, and more.
S.O.A.D. REALLY SHOOK UP THE MUSIC SCENE IN THE LATE 90'S ...ONE OF THE ALL-TIME GREAT BANDS ... ANY GENRE !
I'm 62 n love a lot of different music. Discovered SOAD at Ozzfest '99 on the small stage. I was hooked. They tore it up! Found a little of new groups at all the Ozzfests. Shame it's not an ongoing fest. Thanks man
I got the opportunity to catch them at Ozzfest '02 just outside of Milwaukee, Wisconsin! I was living in Green Bay(moved back to Texas, where I was born and raised, years ago)back then and my little brother and a couple of our buddies road tripped down just for that show! One of those experiences that hangs with you your whole life. Those were some good times, that's for sure!
same
Most insanely awesome lyric:
“You know that every time I try to go
Where I really wanna be
It's already where I am
'Cause I'm already there”
Nah you arent wrong, SOAD is Goated, 33 year old metal head checking in. Their entire discography is worth a spin.
System is amazing!! Serj is incredible!! I'm going to see them live in Torontooooo!! :D :D
53 yr old here and been a fan of SOAD since the beginning I saw them in a little club back in the early 90s front and center best thing I ever saw loved them ever since
Happy to see you listen to this.. I thought of you reacting to this every time i saw you sipping on the kombucha tea
SOAD is an incredible band!! I saw them live in 2002 at Ozzfest, and they are evert bit as good live as on the album. They are outstanding performers!! Songs to check out: Aerials, Chop Suey!, Toxicity, and Psycho. 🤘Rock on, Kelly 🤘
One of my best memories....driving to town with my 5yo son and 4yo twin daughters listening to this song and all 3 of them in unison singing "SUGAR!".....proud dad moment right there.
The intro says "Good evening, Im Erick Aloss"
= "America Lost"
Saw them live at Ozzfest back in the day when I was in high school! Amazing! Wish I could experience that again, such an energy
You're spot on. Led Zeppelin is my favorite band, but this is up there. So unique. So innovative. It stirs emotions in me I didn't even know I had. They go so hard.
Do yourself a service and listen the entire album
Toxicity also! Those 2 are masterpieces
FRRRR
My first SOAD experience was seeing them open for my friend's band at the Key Club in Hollywood, Ca. What blew my mind was watching them do a cover of Berlin's 'METRO' while doing these crazy dance moves especially during the song's chorus.
I am 57 yrs old.. I grew up with country ,motown, rap, and metal..SOAD was the 💩! I was in my late thirties or early forties when they got popular. Yes Sir musical genius indeed! Glad to see younger folks giving props!! 👍🏻✌🏻✊🏻
SOAD was absolutely amazing live. Seen them on their toxicity tour.
Such great live performers!
SOAD was among the good stuff when I was a teen, but much of it went over my head.
Now I'm gaining a new appreciation for their music via reactions and analysis by professional musicians.
I’m a Hiphop head and NuMetal head and System is the only band or artist I haven’t saw live and is today the only artist left on my bucket list.. loved graduating high school back in the day and being introduced to System and NuMetal..
YOUR REACTION TO THIS SONG IS EPIC! IVE SEEN SYSTEM LIVE 5 TIMES AND THEYRE AMAZING EVERYTIME. .. LOVE EM ❤❤❤
This was my jam back in the day. I can remember exactly where I was, always switching back and forth between this song and Chop Suey.
your facial reactions were perfect! I remember the first time i heard this song (bar Phono in Leeds UK if you're interested!) and it blew my mind, stuck with me since. Keep up the great work BP!
I loved watching you starting to feel this! Biggest smile so far today! Time to feel soad!
This song brings back memories. Was on the frequent play list in my local rock club and one night I was dancing on a speaker while it was playing. Got to one of the heavier bits and I jumped off. Hit my head on the low ceiling, slipped in beer on the dance floor when I landed. I thought I'd broken my ankle - but didn't spill a drop of the beers I was holding (had one in each hand). Got hoisted up by the friendly rockers and when I found I could put weight on my ankle I just carried on slamming around as though nothing had happened. A couple of hours later, it came on again and almost a carbon copy of round one minus the head on the ceiling. In between, a friend fractured his eye socket while moshing and smashing his face off the top of some dudes head. I think that was to Slipknot.
I love a lot of your points, and yeah I feel like the late 90s and early 2000s had some of the best musical gems since the 60/70s, plus the comments on health recommendations from the media: Doctors still cant decide if eating eggs are healthy or not but it's been flipped over more times than Kim Kardashian on a night out with Diddy.
Yes 90's early 2000's lyrics are some amazing things. But now 2 generations of eye opening music and the masses are still sleeping
SOAD, my favourite song of theirs is prison song. But they got one hell of a back catalogue. They spent their music career trying to open the eyes of the listens to things that we all take as normal. Thank god they and others like them exist.
At the time when this band came out , they were one of the most original acts around.. Nobody sounded like them and No band to this day has ever done what they've done. killer album, killer song.
Let’s goooo!! System of a Down is amazing! I’m sure you will find many many more great songs by them!
there's greatness through out all generations... being open to it helps you find it
Definitely one of the most innovative and creative bands ever.
When I was 15 a coworker at my summer job introduced me to SOAD, Tool, One Minute Silence. I still vividly remember the first time I heard Sugar, Spiders, DDevil, Aenima, 46 & 2, Die Eier von Satan, Holy Man, Fish Out of Water, 1845, these albums have been on all my playlists since.
I truly fucking love system. From back then until this very day
Every era and genre has talent that pierces the mundane. That’s my music.
Was my very first into to SOAD! So glad to see you doing a review on them!!
Always amazes me when I see someone, such as yourself, that has done a lot of reactions, that songs like this havent hit your platform yet. Great song. Thanks and keep up the good stuff
70's Music is my shit but this is the stuff I listened to in my Teen years. These guys are amazing.
I am 62 years old and love System of a Down and a bunch of bands one would not think. I am open. If it sounds good and has meaningful lyrics I like it.
I remember exactly how old I was when I was introduced to this song. 17 years old, being very emo, now I'm a "normie" from Europa, but the song is still in my playlist. Love SOAD!
9:21 Every generation adds more artists and bands to the list of the greatest of all time.
I remember listening to this for the first time after MTV did the "Return to the Rock" promotion.
Good music is good music. I'm one of those old guys you mentioned (I'm 64) and I love this group. Too bad they aren't together any more. Serg was amazing.
X is where the news is at these days. I was blessed to be born where I could enjoy late 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, and early 2000s music.❤❤
Like Mary Poppins.....just a teaspoon of sugar helps the medicine go down........
they’re all over the place and completely amazing. i fell in love the first time i heard spiders but prison song and lost in hollywood will always be my number ones
one of my favorite bands growing up
90’s is a great decade of music. Rap grunge alternative rock.
I'm a so called older dude 53 this fucking rocks, they are a generational band👍👍
Born in the 70s
Child in the 80s
High school and college in the 90s
If anyone had a better run of music than me and my generation, let me know!
This song changed the way I say Sugar to this day!
Great run! I was born in 82 so I basically had the same run. I truly believe the 70’s had the best music but the 80’s and 90’s did their thing.
@@johncarpenter3751born in 83 and I agree with you, but there’s plenty of music that I love from every decade starting with the 60s.
born in 75 and here to testify. It's true no one had a better run than us when it comes to music lol
Born in 68’, childhood in the 70’s, teenager in the 80’s , came into the 90’s in my 20’s……that is the best run!!!
@@BuckSoy-vo2urBorn in 69. Best years to grow up in and have so much great music to draw from.
I was born in the 60's so I grew up listening to all of the "old" music, I also listened to so many genres from the 80's/90's and some from the early oughts. There's even current music I enjoy listening to. So to say the best music came from any generation (IMO) is pigeon holing yourself into not enjoying art in all of it's capacity. Open your minds people, don't limit yourself to just one generation of music.
You aren’t trippin. They’re one of the best of the best
I just realized that ending riff is 100% from “for whom the bell tolls”
also i have seen a lot of interpretations of this song, but yours IS the one that makes the most sense. especially with the "Aspertaine Kills" Subliminal messages within it.
this is up there with some of the bests. i agree!!! my mom had me listening to this when i was still in diapers. Along with bands such as disturbed, korn, godsmack so on and so fourth.
👈60 in a couple of months, and the first time I heard SOAD, I was hooked! The controlled chaos in their music, along with the meaningful, societal messaging in their lyrics, is a sound I can appreciate in NuMetal bands.
I legitimately felt the same way the first time I hear them. The whole album was phenomenal I listened to it on repeat!
BP I love your SOAD journey and analysis 🥰
This song has me headbanging and bouncing every time I've heard it for the past 26 years.😁🤘🎸
Despite their few albums they'll forever be one of the greatest bands ever!
Whaaaat WHAT!!!!! Toxicity is a phenomenal album. Check out ANY TUNE from that album
At that time the bands still had something important to say, and people still had ears to listen.
My FAV SOAD song. So in your face, made me a fan.
I've always figured that the "mushroom people" in the song are referenced because what you do to mushrooms is feed them shit and keep them in the dark.
Gen X here ..yep grew up in the 80s and went thru multi genre comings and goings. We appreciate this
This is why some people asked questions....
Incredible band watched them live in London. ❤
Used to jam with my mom to this when it was on the radio in Tulsa.
I remember the first time I saw this video was on late-night MTV, I hated it at first but it grew on me. I had no idea they would become one of the biggest bands from that era
All time legendary band.
This was the first SOAD song I ever heard, I was like 12-13 or something like that, blew my mind. Became an instant fan.
I avoided listening to this song for the longest time because a tiny clip was soo different from Chop Suey, Toxicity, etc. I was so pleasantly surprised when I finally went there. It's one of my favorites now!
25 years later a still jump to this band.😂
Genuine reaction. And I appreciate you hinting that it's time for people to wake TF up. I couldn't agree more. Feels like living in zombieland.
4:44 "im not there all the time you know some people call it insane"
Perfect timing
I'm 60. That means my mom introduced me to The Doors and The Carpenters, my friends introduced me to Led Zepplin and Pink Floyd, my first husband and I discovered SOAD together and my kids showed me Linkin Park and Falling in Reverse. Life is good. Enjoy ALL of it.
Love SOAD! This song kicked my ass when it first came out!
Older generations (like even mine, "X"), had a lot MORE of the greatest music, but a little bit of the music from the 21st century is the best-sounding stuff so far
This is my fav of theirs!❤
Hands down one of the best concerts back in the day❤
Ukraine is watching. Hello from Kyiv!
No one is woken up because things are still the way they are. Change happens when the pain of changing outweighs the pain of staying the same
Look bro I’m a Gen x and I consider this our music too. My music journey kind of stops at 2000 but there are song that I still love that are past the 2000. But most of the music from the 50’ up to then are awesome!
Genius-level musicians always exist. Always perform. Always record. Every decade has its own group of game changers. SOAD and Faith No More share space on their decade's stage, as far as I'm concerned.
My favorite song! Good choice.
5:40 not the best time to stop the video my man😂😂
I agree! 90s rock is the best! 🔥💯🤟🏼
i always thought it was "theres a bunch of mushroom people, sitting around all day" for like 15 years ive been singing it wrong
" First you get the sugar then you get the power then you gets the women" Homer J. Simpson
SOAD is one of the best metal/hard Rock bands of all time. The creativity and lyricism is next to none
I’m a child and soad is my second favorite band
One of the best damn bands around!!!
So glad I got to watch them touring their first album.
Black Pegasus, I'm 58 and have listened to these guys since 2001.
SOAD was one of the first bands to ever touch my OLD ipod nano back in the day lol
9:05 As a 41 year old man from Europe, for different reasons i do love the 70's, 80's and 90's. I can still handle the 00's mostly becuse of bands like SOAD, Tool, Slipknot, Foo Fighters, Drum n Bass (and some very unapreciated banger-singles)... but i gotta say that, imo, and especially after the mid 2010's, shit has just gone downhill when it comes to mainstream good music. Ofc there is still good music out there (probably more than ever tbh) but it is just not the overall good-qualility mainstream ones. That or i'm just becoming a grumpy old man without even realizing it🤣
I love all these decades too and in a lot of different genres but after the early 2000’s it went downhill .. for me anyway and I am 56
