    Really want to thank you for posting this. I'm car dumb and have been nursing a power steering problem for months due to my worry it was going to be hard and expensive. Upon seeing your video I attempted it and got it fixed. The fact that you couldn't remember the lifting thingy boosted my confidence. And the fact that you held the camera in one hand and fixed it with other helped to.

      David Robinson lol keep in mind I knew nothing about cars when I made these videos. It's been a few years now and I've worked on 2 or 3 cars. The jeep was definitely a nightmare but for whatever reason I still miss it. I always use 2 or 3 jack stands when I work on my car now. Looking back I can't believe I this this although I'm a pretty small guy, most of the time I could get under the jeep without using a jack or stands.

    Super helpful video! Gonna install this weekend. Only thing I'll recommend is to lubricate the o-rings with power steering fluid before installing, if installing dry there will be a tendency to tear the o-ring and lose it's sealing abilities..

    MR. ANDERSON,
    JUST WANTED TO SAY THANKS FOR GIVING ME HOPE/OPTIMISM

    THE UN-INTIMIDATING MANNER YOU EMPLOYED IN THE VIDEO IS A REAL

    Grand Cherokee Limited WITH THE SAME PS-NOISE ISSUES THAT ALOT OF

    Good video and good advice. I am wondering if its a good idea to use the teflon tape. I guess it did not hurt, but the o-rings are supposed to seal the fittings. The noise heard at the end of the steering travel is normal, all cars with power steering make noise when you hit the stop on either side. IMHO, its best to avoid steering up against the stop, back off the stop and steer a little wider. How is your steering after a couple months? Leak free on the high pressure hose?

    Went looking for videos after struggling to replace the high pressure hose today. Not surprised to see the aftermarket hose is the issue. The one I got from Autozone (their brand I believe) is a PITA. Was difficult getting the top fitting on and absolutely impossible to get the bottom fitting on. Guess I’ll have to track down a Mopar hose. Wonder if Autozone will take their garbage hose back...

    Thanks for the video. Easy to replace with the exception of the bottom fitting coming loose. 13/16/ wrench is very sloppy and does no help the situation. I jammed some wood pieces between the aluminum piece and the motor pulley to prevent the flexing of the fan shroud. I used an 8" adjustable wrench and finally was able to loosen the fitting.

    Link375... thank you for your time and generosity. This video is very helpful. I have a slow power steering leak that needs attention soon. The procedure seems pretty straight forwards and I think I can tackle it myself. A few notes on some of the technical details. You are using thread sealer for water pipes. The Power Steering system is high pressure hydraulic exposed to high heat. I don't think that is the right choice. I think you need a heat tested hydraulic thread sealer like Loctite 567 or 5770.
    Also, I think your procedure for removing air from the system isn't adequate. The Jeep has a fluid cooler. I think it probably takes about 20 turns with the jeep in the air and the tires removed with the cap open to remove the air bubbles. The Jeep should be off the ground with the wheels off so it can turn with the engine turned off. After 20 or 30 turns or when the reservoir stops needing fluid added, I think you start the engine and turn it off immediately and then top off the fluid. At this point you should be able to start the engine and cycle the steering wheel several times with the cap off and the fluid shouldn’t go down(tires still off and frontend in the air). Once it stops going down, no air bubbles you should be able to shut the engine, put the cap back on, put the wheels back on and the system should work smoothly. If not there is still air in the system.

      if you leave the cap off it would spray everywhere. either way, my way worked. good info in your comment though.

    Make sure to use the correct power steering fluid due to the hydraulic fan being run by the power steering pump. Fluid must say it is approved for Mopar MS5931 or MS10838.

    I bought one like this but in black for 2000. Has 185k miles and everything works but when I have to turn the steering wheel when stopped it’s almost impossible to do so. Also there is a whining noise when doing that coming from the power steering. Is it the pump or the rack and pinion?

    Great video...I am just about to do this repair myself. Question.....did you need any adapter for the pump end of the hose or did the new part fit right in? Also, what size wrench did you use to loosen the bottom end? I am trying to get mine loose and am having a really hard time....the fan shroud is flexing a bit and am afraid of damaging it. Thanks!

    Hey link had a question. My power steering seems to be making noise as well but there's still fluid inside. Notice it leaks as well. Can it be the hose I have to replace or pump?

    • @link375
      @link375  10 років тому +1

      if it's leaking from the same place, then it's the hose, if it's from somewhere else, then it'll be something else

  • @MyBacktrail
    @MyBacktrail 8 місяців тому

    I do appreciate the video, but you should have just taken the old hose to a Napa and had them find an o-ring for you. Also, do NOT use teflon tape for that kind of fitting. Teflon tape is for pipe fittings, where the THREADS are the seal. In this case the O-RING is the seal, and you add interference to the threads when tightening the o-ring, possibly leading to incorrect pressure on the o-ring.

  • @bigBusaJoe
    @bigBusaJoe 8 років тому +6

    Do not use teflon tape. The o-ring seals the hose. If there is a leak, it is coming from the o-ring.

    So I bought the new hose from O'reillys with the same kind of fittings on both sides, but it doesn't line up with the pump and fan! It's like there are too many bends in it or something. I do most of my automotive work at home and this is killing me. Can you shed any light on this? Thanks!

    Hi Link...so I'm having trouble getting the bottom nut loose to come off from the old hose. Any suggestions for a noobie?

    • @link375
      @link375  10 років тому +1

      use WD40, spray it and let it sit for 5-10 minutes then try again. make sure you use the proper wrench, you don't want to strip that nut.
      additionally you could also use a lighter or preferably a torch lighter to heat it up and then try to loosen it up with your wrench.
      just be careful not to touch it while it's still hot

    Hi..looking good..But your new hose requires that you remove the "adapter" on the PS pump? My old one hose 5019708AB was leak and i order new one 5019708AE. only this pats selling. When i drive to service, our service man can`t installed new hose, they tell me need new "adapter" on the pump. Hmmm on your video you are used adapter or you not have in your old hose?

    • @link375

      the new hose comes with an adapter in place. if you use the old one it's pointless as this is where it leaks in the first place

    no issues or leaks at all after replacing this hose, however I just had my transmission solenoid pack fail, getting error codes P0760 and P0770 which are both in the main solenoid pack. so I'll be making a video tomorrow on how to replace the transmission solenoid pack

  • @HouseCallAutoRepair
    @HouseCallAutoRepair 9 років тому +2

    Currently working on this exact same problem. Replacing this hose alone, will NOT solve this, or upcoming, RELATED problems.
    Things to NOTICE. High pressure hose expands when either turning steering wheel OR turning on AC! This is because the HYDRAULIC FAN motor is faulty/failed. This causes overheating, which causes a CHAIN EFFECT of related failures.
    ALSO NOTE the two little solder beads on the TCM FUSE (engine compartment fuses) are NOT 'shiny' like the other fuses, but have a dull, and "wrinkly 'finish... This means your Transmission Valve body or TORQUE CONVERTER are also starting to, or have failed and are drawing too much current. (because of excessive heat)
    RECOMMENDATION Drain fluids, replace damaged hose, replace hydraulic fan motor (or assembly) and replace the power steering pump if the "whining" is excessive.
    ALSO CHANGE TRANSMISSION FLUID AND FILTER, or EXPECT to be replacing the transmission next!
    (IF your fuse IS solder balls ARE shiny, and you experience NO transmission peculiarities you should STILL replace the fluid and filter to keep it healthy)

    • @HouseCallAutoRepair
      @HouseCallAutoRepair 9 років тому +2

      Further advice on refilling the power steering reservoir, would be to get BOTH front wheels off the ground (to make things EASY), fill the reservoir, THEN ROTATE the steering wheel all the way from one direction to the other, add fluid and repeat until it stays nearly full, BEFORE starting the engine. This will spare you from causing any further possible pump damage, and help "bleed" the system.
