Breaking my collar bone on Berm Creek
Вставка
- Опубліковано 14 лис 2018
- After doing some work on my backyard mountain bike trails, I decided to finally build some kind of a jump at the bottom. In rushing to put it together and give it a test, I ended up breaking my collar bone and shoulder blade. This puts my off the bike for the season, but at least you can enjoy the story leading up to it.
Given the size of these rollers and the circumstances leading up to the crash, this is easily my dumbest injury to date.

The reason he broke his collar bone was because he cut corners, even though he knew he needed to build a berm to get The speed he needed, he got impatient. It wasnt the "sketchyness or risk factor that broke his bone. It was improper trail building. At least that's what he said. I've paid the price for cutting corners recently on my mountain bike. Apparently there were two broken collarbones on my local trails this weekend!

There comes a time you just have to accept it's time to slow down a bit. That point is when you don't get up as quickly as you went down, it hurts more than it used to and you take longer to heal. It's nature's way of telling you to chill out a little and whilst you shouldn't give up you should slow down. I'm still cycling at 70 years of age. I used to play soccer, rugby, run cross country, run roads races and even a couple of marathons all that along with competitive swimming. I was a full time firefighter and sporting and work injuries meant I retired with spinal disabilities aged 46 years. I spent a few years feeling sorry for myself recovering from three major surgeries and then suffered a heart attack at 68!!! I haven't given up cycling, in fact, I'm really getting back into it but you have to listen to your body. I was doing far too much and I paid the price. If it hurts rest it. The pressure of making videos on time is not good for your health. Take it easy and heal. We will wait for the videos.
Steven Booth amazing story,

damn, that rock impact looked really painful. This was really hard to watch, i've been through an almost identical injury, with a shoulder blade fracture and a broken collar bone, along with a broken wrist and a few broken fingers.

I’m rewatching this for motivation. Just separated my shoulder and wondering what I’ll do for the next few months☹️ we all crash eventually. It’s what we learn about the crash that counts. Thanks for sharing👊🏻
This was hard to watch. I never like to see people crash. Not only does it physically hurt, but it can take quite awhile for you to mentally get back into the game.
Sleeping is going to rough for a minute, so hope you heal up quick!

Watching people crash is funny, and it's part of the sport.
I agree, I hate seeing crashes. Nothing funny at all about someone getting hurt. If it's a silly crash and they're fine, then okay, it can be funny.
It’s super hard to watch for me since I crashed last month and lost 2 teeth. I’m glad I didn’t break my collar bone though that’s way worse.
I'm not just here for the mountain biking, I'm here to see you. Get well soon kid, cheers!

Sorry to hear man! I broke my right clavicle last year. Oct 1, 2017. Broke into 5 pieces and was oddly not the most painful part of my crash. My hip took the full force of an awkward OTB onto flat. I elected for surgery and a plate along with 7 screws re-attaching everything to normal length. This was a great choice for me. Being a big dude and loving symmetry on my body, my clavicle is fully healed and the same length as my left one. I also elected for a second surgery to remove the plate two weeks ago. I did so not because it bothered me so much (although it made a backpack a bit uncomfortable and hurt a little every time giving my daughter “piggy backs”), but I was more worried about breaking it again, which my doctor forwarded me that it could be much harder to repair. Anyhoo. I have X-rays if it broken and with a plate. Don’t yet know how to share, but would gladly do so. Let me know.
I hope you heal well. Love the videos no matter if you ride or not. Keep up being awesome.
hello sir, i just broke mine. just wanted to ask, do you get all your shoulder ROM back?
@@kenkentuts hi Kenzie. Yes I got it back. I did elect to get my plate removed after a year. The plate never really say well with me. My clavicle is still a little tender, but back to riding hard no problem.
Keep at it and don’t let it get you down! You’ll get back to normal, and maybe with some cool scars :)
@@kozybearcat thank you man, you really put my mind at ease :D, also be careful wirh your next ride :D

@@kenkentuts other than it being a little tender, My strength is back to normal. Working out big muscle groups seemed to work for me. Nothing too isolated. Push ups, dumbbells, rowing.

Get well soon Seth. Wish you a speedy recovery.
I love seth's english. I can understand him so well i ain't even a native speaker and i don't need the subtitles. Just because he pronunces every word exactly. Thank you for that seth. You are not just improving my mountainbike skills but also my english skills.
your dedication to get your vids out as unquestionable as ever! fair play, wish u speedy recovery! 👌🏻💪🏻
this week on seth's bike hacks "which bone did I break?" get feeling better Seth!
The moment Seth mentioned those rocks I immediately winced. I wish there were bales of hay for him instead of those rocks when that happened.
Hay? no, bigass marshmallows. he need bigass marshmallows
It doesn't seem too big of a deal, until you hear Seth screaming his soul out from pain. Holy moly...
I am so awed (is that a word?) by your creativity, how you are living your passion, and also your willingness to show success and failure. Your channel truly is a value to me and for that I thank you. Heal quickly and keep up the good work!
I’ve been watching your videos for some time, but I haven’t commented until now, but this time I have some pretty solid advice for you. Not mountain biking advice, as I’m a total novice at that, but collarbone breakage advice. I’ve broken my collarbone twice, and I can say that I really, truly feel sorry for you. The first time I broke mine was skiing, and throughout the healing process the pain wasn’t as bad as the feeling of not being able to do anything active. I was about three weeks from healing fully and I decided to play some ultimate frisbee with my friends... which ended in re-breaking the bone. So, I was mostly incapacitated for a total of six consecutive months. My advice is not to get impatient or try to rush the healing process, because the potential to re-injure yourself is quite high, and having a broken collarbone sucks. I’m sure we will all be understanding if you post less content for the next few months. Good luck living the one-armed life, and just remember to be patient.
The trouble with collar bones is that they are so thin that when healed, unlike thicker bones, they become far weaker and prone to breaking again. Each break exacerbates the problem and it takes longer to heal. Twice as painful too.
When I was in highschool, one of my teammates on the basketball team broke his collar bone playing some backyard football. He rushed to get back for the basketball season and rebroke it his first game back, diving for a basketball. Definitely don't rush the healing.
Should change your endphrase to: Tnx for almost dying with me today and see you next time! 😉
But for real, speady recovery!
MisterGiant this made me laugh out loud
8:15 “You know why I don’t worry about that? Mountain biking.”
Hey Seth, I am a big fan of your videos and always look forward to the new ones. First and foremost, I wish you a speedy recovery and hope all is well. Great project on Berm Creek. I too am a trail builder. I built over 7 miles (and counting) of singletrack in Western Pennsylvania. This is a one man show... 99% the work on these trails done by me, on private land, with permission from the landowners. Shortly after I began this project, I realized that there has to be something better than just shovels and rakes...Which led me to the Mcloud! Although they are an awesome addition to your Trail Tool collection, may I make a suggestion? Shortly after I bought a Mcloud, my MTB club had a trail day, and used "Rogue Hoes". They are a beast of a tool, and replace a lot of tools that I had ordinarily carried on the trail project. Very nice tool for digging shelves on hillsides. I had not tried other variations of this tool (as there are many made by this company), I have the "Prohoe Triangle Head Rogue Hoe with 40" Curved Hickory Handle" as listed on Amazon. I think you will like this if you give it a try! Hope to see you riding again soon!
The sounds! The horror!

Lots of viewers, lots of gear, little skill.
Seth, just discovered your channel - I got the exact same injury doing something quite similar. I give you a lot of credit because it took me out for an entire season. Breaking your scapula sucks! It totally freaked everyone out at the ER because like you say it’s rare, usually car accidents. Welcome to sloping bumpy shoulder club!
Seth, thanks for uploading this and for sharing your battle wounds! I am nursing a ruptured Bi-Cep tendon from last year!! I am amazed at how long it is taking for me to get strength back.
a really encouraging vid. Blessings on your recovery!
I broke my collar bone straight in half at Windrock 5 weeks ago and had to climb down the mountain by myself with my bike... I feel your pain dude.
Same, just not at windrock. And I have a separated shoulder. It sucks walking down the mountain and sleeping upright
I recently busted two ribs, after seemingly falling out of the sky onto my own elbow (front wheel slipped the top of a very high bank riding under full speed and compression). I walked it down from mid mountain, and was feeling somewhat ok, until the freaking adrenaline wore off! I can’t even breath hard without bringing tears to my eyes!
@Mr.Moonboy ouchhhh that's a hell of a mountain to climb down after breaking your collar bone.. what trail were you on if you don't mind me asking.
Jonathan Arnold Trail One. Went of that sketchy rock drop section and got caught up on a root and got flung. The GoPro video of it is up on my channel if you want to watch it.
“I broke my collar bone” good job Seth
Ps. You should check into acerbis hand guards to protect your hands from tree crashes
Handgaurds for a mountain bike😂
My scapula may be in 1 piece, but my clavicle was in 6 pieces after a crash at Santos. Went to the ER, they said yep, it's broken, go home to Miami and have surgery. So I drove 5hrs with a giant bag of ice on it, then had 5 screws put in. At least being 11 months late watching this, I know you're healed by now, Seth. Your dedication to content (much less riding) is to be admired!!!
Awesome video. I’m amazed at how I didn’t even get the urge to skip ahead because of how everything was sequenced and edited.

The Giro Switchblade MIPS helmet has a removable full chin guard. Even with the guard off, the helmet is still fully compatible with most neck braces. Almost the best of both worlds. Hey Seth, it's alright If you don't get a video out for the scheduled time, your health is more important than some youtube video so please take care and get some rest for now 😄
Only problem being, no content = no income.
This video was posted the day on my wrist surgery. Took a really stupid fall heading back to the car while snowboarding in Colorado. Broke my Radius and my Ulna. The surgeon said it wasn't that bad, and that I'd have an 8 week or so recovery time. But after spending three hours longer on the operating table than anticipated. And having my wrist reconstructed three times, I've now got two pins sticking all the way through my wrist and a recovery time of four to six months now. I feel your pain. And I look forward to the content. (currently watching in the middle of the night because I can't sleep due to the pain and I can't take any meds for another hour)
Prayers for a quick recovery. Those shoulder fractures are no joke man. Keep it up, looking forward to repair videos!
Congratulations on the million!
Hey Seth, Dan here from Australia. Sucks to see you injured like this as you are my favourite youtuber. Big man. Stay safe out there. We all want Seth for days! Heal fast and steady.
Stay strong Seth!!! I ended up braking my shoulder blade in half last July and also partially fracturing my sternum. Took me 3 months and I was back on the bike. The docs told me that the shoulder blade fracture/brake was super rare as well. Just means we went down hard! You'll bounce back better than ever. Just make sure to not push the healing process too hard.
Your experience is similar to mine last year. I broke my right shoulder blade last year in four places. For like 4 or 5 hours I thought that I had just badly dislocated my shoulder, but when I heard the radiologist say she had never seen that before I was like, "Well that can't be good." Glad you also healed up well.
that was painful even to watch!!!, get well soon Seth!! ,💪💪💪
Heal well Seth and thank you for all the great content.
Lol classic! The sound a person makes when they get the wind knocked out of them is truly one of the funniest sounds in the world. Not saying what happened wasnt shitty because it was. Hopefully you heal up soon and get back to shredding!!!
