Restoring these alloy MTB rims with JB Weld and elbow grease

- No! We did not actually list these for sale on Craigslist. This video was just for fun. Today, Kevin terrorizes my workshop, trying to restore these alloy mountain bike wheels so they at least look new.
Years ago, Kevin used to repair alloy car wheels for a living, so I challenged him to repair a set of bike wheels. The wheel had a huge dent in it, and a nice split where it was joined during manufacturing. The wheel would not hold air, even with plenty of sealant. Kevin was able to get the wheel looking good again, and even hold air! But did that new paint job survive the rigors of mounting a tire? Watch to find out.

No, we did not actually post this on Craigslist! But if we did.... what would the listing title be?
Berm Peak Express weel
A Rim that got bent and then fixed
Basically brand new my neighbor Kevin fixed a huge crack he seems like a nice guy
How to kill a unsupecting buyer with an over-stressed alloy rim - DIY Method
Brand new, hardly any miles , loved and cared for
Kevin is my kind of mechanic
Destroys anything that gets in his way, disregards his own safety and cleanliness, and works off pure intuition
kevin: “i used to huff paint fumes all day”
also kevin: “rainbowwwwww, rainbowwww!”
This is hilarious. 😂 good on you.
those aluminum particles aren’t any good for him either😂
@@msnbkn well yeah difference is the aluminium wont get you high it will just give a nasty inflammation and possibly infection
shadowXXe breathing aluminum dust is also believed to be a cause of Alzheimer's.
Lol
he has cush core and still somehow managed to blow up the rim hahahahahahh
That's Kevin in a nutshell!
man, i thought that too, musta been a gnarly hit.
did you not see the punishment he put his back wheel through when he was building and testing the "Kevin jump"
Tire only had 10psi 🤣🤣🤣
That is pretty easy actually.. Did two rims with cushcore and DH casing last year..
Ok , lessons learned, don't let Kevin near your bike, don't let Kevin near your workshop, dont let Kevin near your tools!
Very informative clip.
"we're gonna take the edge off the jb weld" *slips the rim a coors light*
LOL
5:20 quick J-B weld tip. If you spray isopropyl alcohol on it, it will make the jB weld a little bit more like putty and you could smooth the surface out with your finger. After the alcohol evaporates it drys just like normal.
Could we get a video that's only focused on showing the trails on Berm Peak so far - maybe raw GoPro footage?
This is on the list! I want to get a little further down before we do this, as there's a lot of trail left to cut. Once we connect what we have into a complete loop it'll definitely happen.
Summary with some google earth and some drone footage.
@@Aheitchoo Doubt he want's people knowing exactly where he lives.
If you know someone with a 360 degree camera, that could be a great way to showcase the raw video of the trails and full loop
Definitely want this
00:44 when owner and pet look identical ...
lmao
XD
"you guys were huffin this all day???"
"it'll be fine" LMAO
I don't always use spray paint.
But when I do, I can see sounds and hear light.
(Wear a respirator, kids!)
Kevin: “I don’t want to break the rim”
Also Kevin: Smacks hammer against the rim as hard as he can”
Also Also Kevin: “Love taps”
Good old thumb detector
Lol
That's a pretty small hammer actually. I use a 32oz hammer pretty regularly. Some guys even use a 40oz
Park list it as 21oz.
It’ll chooch.
This is how you cold-work metal. This is how they take dents out of cars, for example.
Personally, if he cannot find a welder to weld it, I would use aluminium brazing rods. This rim is worth fixing properly by welding it though
So glad to see Drama in the video.
Tom Herron it’s difficult with out him now
@@duggsx3825 I know. Such a sweet puppy.
This is an amazing channel to keep us entertained between your main videos
I'm so glad that there is this other channel to keep me posted on other things going on. I love the extra content
when he took scissors to the tire because it was hard to remove I thought "yeah those paint fumes really did a number on his brain"
I was waiting for a clip of Seth looking at the workbench saying “What the heck happened to my workbench?!”... and then Kevin giving the Tommy Boy response of “What’d you do?!?!?!”
Tryp ha! Exactly what I was thinking
Lovin’ the different “guests” on your channel Seth! It’s a great format that keeps things interesting. Keep up all the great content!
Same
Really like the way these videos are made, raw footage without any voice recorded after. Those videos are great too but these are good for a change, and please make more videos with Kevin.
Kevin: Rides it over a rock and nearly breaks it.
also Kevin: says it's lightly ridden
This is just an extra treat.
Thanks for creating this extra channel.
i love these types of videos so thank you
That came out looking good! I have been enjoying your vids during this quarantine. You might already know all of these tips for having zero tape leaks but I thought I'd share my experience with it:
Sleeved, non welded rims commonly leak even without damage. Luckily some rim manufacturers use a line of epoxy over the seam on the inside of the rim to combat leaking. For non sealed/non welded seam rims I just run the tape all the way up the side of the bead flush with the lip. Use tape that's 2/3 the internal width of the rim and run it along each side of the rim overlapping in the middle. Also, use one quick layer of electrical tape over the eyelets before you use the tubeless tape (helps prevent leaks if you accidentally puncture the tubeless tape with a tire lever....side note: I like using a Predro's tire lever with the tip filed down a few mm for when I'm working with a shallow bead seat rim so that I don't puncture someone's tape). Lastly, use a shop towel with rubbing alcohol as an applicator/squeegee to press the tubeless tape down as you go (prevents wrinkles in tape). AND one last thing.... use your torch and heat up the end of a metal pick to poke the hole in the tape for the valve hole...that keeps it from splitting and cauterizes the tape for no splitting or leaking later.
They’re destroying a maxxis tyre like it’s nothing while I’m over here trying to buy just one
CrAzE bAnAnA 2 bro I can’t even afford one maxxis i have to buy continentals from ebay
@Michael Turba It's an alternate spelling, that how we say it in the UK
@@magflop I'm from the UK and I spell it tire
@@HD9S Yeah it's not always said that way but I'm just saying that tyre isn't wrong either.
@Michael 2219 it's spelled tyre in Australia

Kevin is such a cool friend to have! 👌⚡
Lesson for the day... don't let Kevin loose in your workshop. 😂😂
Keep it up on both channels!!! Love it 😍
i love this channel because after watching seth bike hacks i come here later in the week and this is what i get. keep up the good work
Another great channel by Seth. Kevin is a trip, he definitely needs to be a regular, for sure.
I could watch Kevin videos all day, and I bet he's awesome to hang with. But he's not getting anywhere near my garage or tools or bikes! Did he even check the spigot handle back in?
Love this channel! Please upload as much as possible
I love this channel, such a great idea!
Love Kevin, dude is funny in so many ways.
I’m having a Seth marathon .... Think iv watched every single video today. 🤣
Loving the bike hacks
I used to work in a large metal fab shop.
All the platers and painters were a just little 'off'.
This was an OSHA approved shop. Ventilation and safety equipment were fine.
They were all nice guys, just a little bit twisted or tweaked.
I'm glad all I had to do was cut metal and push buttons!
Holy.... impressive fix!!!
Where can I purchase the elbow grease? 😂
ChrisFix might have some on sale.
Step 1: open your elbow up
Step 2: remove the bearings
Step 3: Rinse the bearings to remove the grease
Step 4: Evaporate the water to leave the grease.
Step 5: Re-sew your elbow together
Step 6: Enjoy your elbow grease.

Its an actual cleaning product here...probably the best degreaser known to man, and cheap as chips (i.e. fries 🙄)
I saw this and another UA-cam video that took a dent out with adjustable wrenches, screw drives and hammers. I used a 4.5” heavy duty steel C-clamp and two metal plates. I sandwiched the rim between the metal plates, then the C-clamp on the metal plates and cranked it down. It only took two attempts. The first got the dent partly out and the second finished it. Almost perfectly straight with barely a scratch!!
I tried this and lemme tell you, it works so well
legit had the rim split apart and after heat, bending and hammering the JB weld held it together and saved it
all while on the trail
yea bring lighters and jb welt and hammers and drill bits and sandpaper to your next mob trip
I really liked seeing the other side of the action here kind of behind the scenes stuff
I definitely like that you went this process and extreme.... I like saving my rims after I Ben them as well .... Normally I'm not doing tubeless ..... And I learned a long time ago not to do pinned wheels ..... That came for my BMX racing background .... I still race BMX today at 46 and I still to this day will not buy a pinned wheel set
This was great! More like this please!!
Great job guys.
Good job Kevin 👍
Im really liking this Berm Peak Express channel...awsome job fixing the wheel kevin
I really love these casual vids
love this channel ( berm peak express) this format of video without an essay is amazing.
Kevin is Awesome!!! We need more Kevin!
Watching him try to get the cushcore off the rim gave me flashbacks as a shop mechanic. Absolutely one of the hardest things to install and remove on a bike.
Dang, the quality of your content is amazing.
Seth, do you know how long I've been looking for a video like this... damn man clutch
Very good channel. More tech and wrenching vids like this
Good idea! That's the purpose of the channel, variety!👍🏼
Nice job. Very Very good. 👏I love this channel😀
Hi love your channel you are the person that made me start mtb
Love this kind of stuff, as someone with a near non-existent budget, I do this kind of stuff all the time lol.
I would have used the two-part resin epoxy though instead of the steel stick, I find the resin is better for getting into tiny cracks and spaces.
Learnt something new, thanks!
Best my friend keep going like this support from me only love and happiness to all people and never give up i wish the best to all people !!! And we love you mr Seth ❤️❤️ !!!
I’m lovin this channel!
Loving the second channel Seth 👍👍
I like how you have a painting of the fat bike in the ocean with the ship.
I have been a fan since the start.
Good job man nice work
7:35 you've been huffing this all day 😂😂😂😂
Loving this second channel!
wicked job, man !
man i realy like the content in your new channel Seth
It’s fun to see your friends in these videos.
Randomly came up on my feed, but never got to see it. Then seeing Drama at the start and end. The feels
Love the model of Kevin...He should’ve asked the rims to smile while taking pictures of it. Lol!
I love this Kevin :))😂😂👌he is so funny
We need more Kevin in the shop!
5:45 - 100% Agree, you can really tell the people who money is no longer a concern by decisions like these.
Waste not want not and all that...
This was great!
Did anyone else notice Kevin mocking Seth when he said "Do you guys know where the directions are at", referencing Seth's hacks video when he pulls off trail to take a wizz to summon a local who knows directions.
Right on Kevin!
Seth + Steady + JB Weld = definitely watching.
This videos are amazing
Honestly thank you for the tip with the 2 component epoxy glue, I have an issue with a rim splitting at the seam and hope that by doing this method I can fix it enough to still be able to run tubeless. Thanks Seth!
did it work
@@mentals555 no sadly, I'm running tubes again
@@Houfaaa worth a shot. wife's back rim is bent to shot but it'a already on tubes so might give this a shot before buying a rim
Hey, already past 100k subscribers!! Congrats!!! 🎉
Hope I can get like you one day!!! 😊
You heard it here first boys and girls.. Seth and Steady Spin encourage paint huffing!
I hope Seth's Bike Hacks grows into a network of channels with some of his good friends as presenters for all the different things they are all good at even if it only loosely related to mountain biking lol
Kevin is a special type of person, the kind that sniffed too much paint. Everyone needs a Kevin in their life
I love watching him!
This channel is great
Amazing video👌👌
I once used JB weld to fix a crack on timing chain cover on a Nissan 4 banger in 91 single cab pick up because the cover was no longer produced. It worked fine up until I got rid of it. Jb weld is amazing stuff
Kevin is a savage in the shop lmao over-spraying everything. Do a compilation of all the sounds he made while repairing the rim lol
Nice job !
Great stuff!
I like this makes me feel good lol can’t wait to get outside and ride my bike with friends
I think Kevin should become a main character on this channel top bloke 👍
We always enjoy Kevin
nice work!!!
Kevins are a national treasure.
The sander was when I lost it. Great stuff guys!
“So yeah, let’s huff some paint” ahahah
Well done! You should have ridden that thing to see if it would last through some of those jumps!
Lol a sign-out sheet for the water knob, great idea.
Next time, use a shifting spanner to bend the rim bead back out. Doesn’t scuff the rim and the adjustment makes it easy to get the rim exactly between the jaws. Also works well for straightening brake rotors. 😉
