I finally got to ride my new custom bike-and I have a lot to say about it!

  • In the last episode we built up my custom titanium hardtail mountain bike, which was made according to an exhaustive list of specifications. At the end of the build I immediately got sick and could not ride, so in this video I actually take the bike out and give my thoughts on it.
I worked with Dave from Sage to design this bike. It was a lot of sending measurements back and forth, sending photos, pictures of tape measures, videos, etc. We went through several versions and worked through all the details, like ensuring the front tire would clear the downtube, and ensuring my seatpost would fully insert and end up at the perfect ride heigh when extended to 150mm.
It's easy to find a 27.5 bike that fits me, but not a 29er. In the realm of 29ers, the Sage Powerline was already pretty close to what I wanted, since it has a pretty short reach and a nimble geometry for covering ground-I just wanted it to be a little more aggressive, but not TOO aggressive to where it's just a plow. So we ended up with a little longer reach and chainstay than stock, also an increased wheelbase and shorter standover height. If it wasn't for Dave at Sage, I would have messed up the geometry pretty bad.

I really like your take on geometry. It feels like manufacturers (and many cycling journalists) are pushing everyone towards super-slack, super-long bikes that don't make sense for many riders, especially those of us on the East Coast.

I bought a gravel bike from Sage. We used dimensions that I got from a fitter. Dave was a blast to work with. When I got it all put together this summer I was blown away on how comfortable the bike felt, especially for long rides. I am now a total believer that getting a bike fit and getting a custom frame is the way to go, but wholly cow was that an expensive way to go. The bike fit was by far the cheapest part of the whole thing.

@@mrvwbug4423I calculated my RAD and found that my setup at the time was +6mm off my ideal. My stem stack height at the time was already too low and scary to ride steep descents in. RAD is good for nerding out on geometry, but it's definitely outdated on modern bikes as you say, and the average spender would be spending more time on math than actually riding.

I had a custom steel HT bike built my Capitol Bicycles. I'm tall and very long legged and my old Trek XXL frame didn't fit. I've never looked back since I got it. Custom frames are a game changer!

Nice ride! Welcome to the Ti HT club! That inside feeling comes from a proper reach/HT&ST angle. I have switched to XL frames just to get the in bike feeling, and still have to put 65mm stems on them and I am only 6', its been driving me nuts for years. Frame designers don't get it, steep ST and slack HT means the cockpit shrinks even with a small increase in top tube. Custom bike would solve the bad geo combos that are all too common.

I look at a *TON* of mountain bikes on Instagram. It's the only reason I use it, and the number of times I've stared at them is probably in the thousands. This is one of, if not *THE* nicest bikes I've seen. That blue camo with the raw titanium asthetic, and how contrast with the kaahima looks so dope.

I love the bike. I'm fortunate to have a Sage as well. One comment: While it's true that a custom bike that fits well is a wonderful thing, a custom bike that ends up not fitting, or you don't love for whatever reason, is unfortunately worth very little in the resale market.
Just something to keep in mind.

I'm a similar height to Seth. I recently went from a reach of 450mm down to 435mm and loved the change. I ride janky trails on the North Shore so I like slacker HTAs (I ride 63). But with the reduced reach, my bikes came to life. I like the stability of the slacker HTA combined with the mobility from the shorter reach. I also went from 165mm to 155mm cranks. LOVE LOVE LOVE the shorter cranks. I'm not sure why we've been so stuck on 170s for so long. I'm telling you, if you're in that 5'7/5'8 height range, and liked going to 165, don't shy away from trying 155! Less pedal strikes, easier on the knees on the climbs, and better foot position on the downs (for people in that height range). One formula to try, is take your inseam in mm (with bike shoes on) and multiple by 0.197 to get your crank length.
