I really like your take on geometry. It feels like manufacturers (and many cycling journalists) are pushing everyone towards super-slack, super-long bikes that don't make sense for many riders, especially those of us on the East Coast.

I agree. Most bike companies will say I should be a large, but I feel more comfortable on a medium. I have ridden a large but never really like it or being so stretched out.

Interestingly, as a tall person I love the way geo is going, I just think manufacturers need to add a larger size or a smaller size or both to just fill in the gap, because the slack is nice, but only when the reach and stand over are properly fitting to the rider

Just because someone is offended, doesn't make them right.

I bought a gravel bike from Sage. We used dimensions that I got from a fitter. Dave was a blast to work with. When I got it all put together this summer I was blown away on how comfortable the bike felt, especially for long rides. I am now a total believer that getting a bike fit and getting a custom frame is the way to go, but wholly cow was that an expensive way to go. The bike fit was by far the cheapest part of the whole thing.

@@mrvwbug4423I calculated my RAD and found that my setup at the time was +6mm off my ideal. My stem stack height at the time was already too low and scary to ride steep descents in. Now I'm a whole +16mm off after adding a spacer under my stem and it turned me into a way more confident descender.
RAD is good for nerding out on geometry, but it's definitely outdated on modern bikes as you say, and the average spender would be spending more time on math than actually riding.

I'm a mountain biker at heart, but since there are very few good challenging trails within reach for me, I mostly ride and enjoy paved paths now with some light unpaved sections, so I just want an all-road bike (between road and gravel) with MTB inspired characteristics.
Basically this means I want a longer and slightly (not too much) slacker road bike for smoother cornering at speed, better control and better comfort.

I like things that appear understated at first glance but have interesting, attention getting/conversation starting details and choices that separate them from the pack. I love design, I love quality through subtlety. So, when I found a certain bike that fit all of that, that I could truly say “If I designed a bike for myself, this is what I would have created”… it feels so great to have that connection.

I'm a similar height to Seth. I recently went from a reach of 450mm down to 435mm and loved the change. I ride janky trails on the North Shore so I like slacker HTAs (I ride 63). But with the reduced reach, my bikes came to life. I like the stability of the slacker HTA combined with the mobility from the shorter reach. I also went from 165mm to 155mm cranks. LOVE LOVE LOVE the shorter cranks. I'm not sure why we've been so stuck on 170s for so long. I'm telling you, if you're in that 5'7/5'8 height range, and liked going to 165, don't shy away from trying 155! Less pedal strikes, easier on the knees on the climbs, and better foot position on the downs (for people in that height range). One formula to try, is take your inseam in mm (with bike shoes on) and multiple by 0.197 to get your crank length.

I'm right there with you, it took AGES to find a bike that I felt comfortable on; I'm 6'3, but my legs are pretty long, so no matter how far up i oushed the seat, I was always feeling like my quads were working overtime, and at worst - it was like my knees were in my ears like I was some kind of clown on a small bike. After watching and enjoying your videos for the past few years i've learned how customization is a big part of riding, and back then I didn't even know that changing something as small the pedal arm length could make such a difference - but it changed my enjoyment massively! I can go for (no exaggeration) 3-4 times longer out on trails without all that extra stress being directed towards my knees and quads, I feel like I can take big strides when I'm building up speed, much more comfortably - THANK YOU

Ok Seth, I’ve been watching you for a few years now. I can’t tell you how much I’ve learned and how much I’ve enjoyed your “shows”. Needless to say, I’m so proud for you and this project. What a great bike. I bought my bike a couple years ago and I love it, although I really haven’t been able to do much with it other than riding it around my neighborhood. I have some medical issues that prevent me from really getting after it. The real reason I bought this bike to begin with is that I have macular degeneration which prevented me from driving. I also have COPD which limits my stamina. I’m hind-sight, I wish I had bought an eBike!i I’d love to convert my bike to electric but I just don’t have the skills or vision.
Again, congrats my friends. Keep the rubber on the dirt! Be safe, God bless! I’ll keep watching!

I just got my first 130mm travel hardtail which is perfect for the flat southwestern Illinois terrain that I have and I took it on its maiden voyage today and it is FREAKING AWESOME!!! I can't compare it to much because I'm coming from a very upright gravel/xc hardtail with a coil shock (I'm like 110lbs) that was WAY too stiff for me and it is game changer it. I know I have been rambling about, but I'm trying to say that once you have something that is tailored to you for the first time it is incredible!!.

awesome to see such a handcrafted custom fit bike, I'm still new to mountain biking and the geometry is pushed so much every year as if it's essential to have a slacker head angle. where as you're right, it's the overall package and how it feels!

There's nothing more satisfying than choosing every part on a bike to make it fit you. Although I didn't get a custom frame I built my own bike, I'm 6ft tall so always fall in between large and medium on almost every size guide. After 15 years of riding I knew what I wanted. I found a size large steel frame 17" (which is considered medium in other brands) so has low standover like a medium, but a decent large reach for my body shape. Built it up a few times and experimented with different parts and finally got it dialled. Love it and will never ever sell it. It's like an extension of my body now 🤟
