    My name is Lucy, I'm a Dutchwoman here to offer an alternative approach to beauty.
    On this channel I do mostly hair tutorials where I show you how to braid, pin and style your own hair. I recreate hairstyles from movies, tv shows or history and I regularly come up with my own, which I love to share with you!
    I really enjoy diving into history to find out how women went about their beauty and dressing rituals in days past. Vintage and history-themed videos are my little passion project.
    You'll find a bit of lifestyle content here as well, ranging from cozy chats over a cup of tea (my beloved Tea Time videos) to personal vlogs and home & interior videos.
    Enjoy browsing!
    Love,
    Lucy

    Now that you’ve done multiple videos on historic tutorials, you should do a video on “modernizing“ these styles and wearing them for a week! I would LOVE that! Especially with this hairstyle! 😍

      Samantha C that’s such a good idea! She should do it by era like a week of 1800s hairstyle or a week of 1940s hairstyle

    Side note: it looks like the lady’s hair was already curled prior to doing this hairstyle. Otherwise she may have had naturally curly, thick hair. That’s why it didn’t mention teasing or using puffs, I think. She may also have some type of product in her hair, pomade or the like, which would assist in adding volume and helping hair stay in place.

      Yeah the funny thing is that I can make an edwardian bun in two seconds when I have powdered hair but nothing holds on my natural hair too bad powering one's hair wasn't done anymore :/

      As far as I know, freshly washed hair was not really an everyday thing in that era. Their incredibly long hair was not easy to wash and they didn't have gentle Shampoo and conditioner yet. Also bathrooms at home we're still a luxury. So they probably washed their hair once a month or even less often. Even the 40s it was still considered normal to wash your hair every 2 weeks. Long hair with some natural grease plus pomade was what most women were working with every das.

    Fantastic! This is one of those original Edwardian picture tutorials that float around Pinterest with no links to the written tutorial and has vexed me for ages because of that … thanks for finding the original. So excited to try this myself! (Though later in the week, when my very straight hair is a little dirtier.)

  • @anonymousunnamed3026
    @anonymousunnamed3026 5 років тому +5

    I think you did great! The model has wavy coarse hair, which is so much easier to work with regarding these hairstyles. Straight hair is a pain to work with, especially if it is thin and freshly washed. I would love to see you do some Asian- hairstyles. LIke Chinese, Korean, or Japanese. They have straight hair and would probably work better with hair like yours. They are also privy to hair pieces as well.

    You should try putting a little dry shampoo in your hair before you start. I have very fine hair and I find that a tiny bit of dry shampoo gives my hair a surprising amount of grip without gunking it all up.

    I think having your hair crimped, and not freshly washed would’ve made this look a bit easier to obtain, like you had mentioned. But I think this turned out so beautiful, I might just try it on myself!

  • @TheGabygael
    @TheGabygael 5 років тому +23

    For your pompadour just curl your hair I have a texture similar to yours and if I don't curl the front of my hair it just won't hold I like doing pin curls/foam curlers on the front but the more "historically accurate" idea is by crimping the hair on hair pins. Also I did the hairstyle while watching the video and to help hold the pompadour I put a hair comb on the top of my hair where you put your pins I noticed that simple black combs were visibly worn on pictures of that era and I feel like it was used like today we would put a Bobby pin to tame a piece of hair without necesseraly hiding it

    Nicely done! Yeah, I think that the reason you had some issues was that 1) Hair wasn't washed as often back then or conditioned, so it was a lot coarser, which meant that it tended to stay where you put it more easily. Today because of modern shampoos and conditioners our hair is so much softer and smoother, so it doesn't hold these styles as well. 2) They used padding, often their own hair, which they would save in little jars, which is where all that wonderful volume came in. 3) Their hair was much longer, usually down to their knees or even longer, as they really didn't cut it except to trim the ends. At least this was easier than the 18th century styles!

    I was so inspired by this one that I decided to try it! My hair is super thick, finely textured & super straight so it was a little tricky getting the front to work but my biggest issue was getting the ribbon to look right & stay. That being said, once I got it all to work... I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT!! I hardly even feel my hair & the only thing I really feel are the bobby pins. This is a perfect look for summer because it's super light & airy.
    I love all of them & I say the more vintage we can get the better! Thank you so, so much for sharing these videos & for all of your hard work!

    Adding hair powder helps immensely with keeping stuff in place. Especially if you use the modern volume powder to cheat a little, it all kinda sticks together. I have completely straight hair and avoid curling or teasing so the powder or wast amounts of dry shampoo were the answer

  • @sadiemcc9363
    @sadiemcc9363 5 років тому +6

    I think if you just used a simple method of getting some texture, like sock bun curls, it would be a lot easier to manage this style.
    I actually enjoy doing elaborate historical updos on bad hair days, as I have ringletty 2B hair, and therefor already have required the poofy, matted mess if ANYTHING goes wrong. I think this would be a good option for me. Thank you!

    Hair used to be coarser because it was “untreated” and dirtier. Your starting hair is way to silky to have proper grip. Regardless, it’s a pleasure to watch because you always make it work, even if this time does not look that authentic.

    I have the crazy thick (red) curley hair. Bobby pins are a futile joke. Hair pins (old tourtise shell ones are divine).
    The hair is still heavy and difficult. I need more pins than are recommended .
    But ultimately it's pretty, and not too hard.
    I'm uncoordinated and bad at girl stuff,, but this can work.
