If I had 3 genie wishes one of them would be "I wanna experience Morrowind again like the first time I booted it up in 2002"
Pretty funny story actually. My parents bought me the English version by mistake and I knew almost no English at this time in my life. Instead of complaining I grabbed myself a dictionary and had a "Fun with English in Morrowind" experience. Worked like a charm for me.

That's the spirit! I personally hate my polish versions of the games. I remember after playing Mass Effect english version on xbox 360 I accidently bought a polish localisation of the second one. It was horrible, the only character I loved was cpt. Bailey by Maciej Maleńczuk, a polish singer, and as far as I hate him as a real person his voice performance was near the original, and I love it to this day. The rest? When I've heard polish Miranda and what's his face in the intro I was: "nope, nope, God,no!", and I was searching for the original version ASAP. I know I'm strange, but on the other hand they always use the famous wooden voice actors that I'm sick of so I will stick to the originals.😆

Something to remember: there are no random encounters in MW. Any NPC you encounter has been placed and tasked. Even bandits have names, unlike Skyrim. So the dead dude you found with the skooma pipe? He'll always be right there.
Also, you making the choice to jump off the main quest and wander after meeting Caius is actually the first thing that he tells you to do. The man has a sweet tooth, but he does want you to be ready for the shit he's about to send you to do.

A few quick notes for those new to Morrowind:
    * Magicka doesn’t auto-replenish. You need to either rest or drink a potion to get it back. If you choose the Atronach sign, only potions or absorbing incoming spells will restore it. The chance to absorb spells is never 100% and is controlled by the Mysticism skill. Alchemy, therefore, is an absolutely essential skill to have.
    * The Fatigue meter affects not only your likelihood to hit the target with a melee weapon but also whether or not a spellcast succeeds or fails.
    * Trainers are an essential in the early game, especially for melee classes. At the start you spend a lot of time “swinging at air”, but when your skill improves to level 50 or above, you miss far less often.
    * Weapons and gear can wear out with use. Once their condition reaches zero they are automatically unequipped and must be repaired. This makes the Armorer skill another must. Repair requires an armorer’s hammer, which can be bought in towns or found in loot. They also keep a supply in the chest at the Fighters Guild halls.
    * All skills have governing attributes (Strength, Agility, Intelligence etc). You cannot improve a skill higher than its governing attribute, so when you are leveling, you need to plan carefully which skills to improve that will let you get the max number of “chits” that you can apply to the attribute you want to increase (which is 5) each time you level up.
    * Get a good printed map of Vvardenfell somewhere. The original game came with a large detailed map and guides for new players starting out. They were sorely needed.
    * Enchanting is absurdly, hilariously overpowered, especially at higher skill levels. That is probably why the “master” level Enchanting skill trainer is in a very hard to reach location, and is also hostile to you when you first visit him. You have to sneak up on him and cast a Calm spell just to speak to him.
    Good luck!

Let me add onto this that fatigue not only affects fighting, but (nearly) everything you do. If youre exhausted and a lock tells you that you need a higher security skill, wait until youre full and try again, you might be able to pick it. The few things that (i think) arent affected by it are alchemy, enchanting, speechcraft and (ironically) your movement.
Also, levelling endurance early is a big boon, as the max HP gains on level up (which scale with END) do not apply retroactively.

    • @MrRattlebones640
      @MrRattlebones640 Місяць тому +3

You dont need to have alchemy as a skill as magicka potions are plentiful, and its probably easier to buy it from a restocking merchant anyway. Neither is armorer, in fact regardless of your level, if you have a number of hammers youll be able to repair it to full regardless of whether its one of your major's/minor's. I say this because alchemy and armorer are my two throw away skills, skills i pick if i cant think of anything else, far from being essential.

The Imperial Church is probably my favorite because you can pick different quests depending on your character build through which Divine you follow, for instance, Stendarr sect is going to have you fighting alot, Zenithar sect is asking for donations, etcetera.

Side quests can be deceptive in MW since they don't point you to every piece. In the Fargoth ring quest, for example, there is a Nord in the tradehouse who wants you to find Fargoth's stash. You can lie to Fargoth about his ring, and then accept the job to find his stash and steal his money, then just run off with both without ever completing it. If you give Fargoth his ring he'll place it in the stash, giving you an extra chance to swipe it. Then if you really want, you can go back to the Nord and give him the money you found, and he pays you a share, you know, if you really want to clear the quest.
Since these are set up as separate mini quests, rather than one long quest that loops you through stages, it's easy to miss pieces if you don't talk to everyone.
There are also freeform quests. As an example, there is one where, if you find all the keys to some scattered teleporter chambers, it will initiate a quest to find a master key. Of course, you have no idea this is a thing until you've found them all (also, iirc it was added in a patch or an expansion, but you get the idea).

Came to say this. Morrowind quests are actually very complex compared to Oblivion and Skyrim.
Add to that, some are mutually exclusive depending on various attributes or affiliations and you have a ton of options that can affect how you choose to do things down the line.

one thing people tend to mention a lot is the combat system. But it is by no means bad, just different. It's not player skills that matter, but character skills. Much like in other older RPGs.
It doesn't matter much if you personally have incredible reflexes, if your character is bad at fighting with a sword, your character will miss a lot.
The big disconnect comes from combining those character-based mechanics with a 3D first person view.
Oh, and remember that the game back in the day came with an extensive manual and a map. So for the real "like back then" experience, you'll want those at hand, even if its only as a pdf. The manual also explains the menus, controls, fatigue, and major, minor and misc skills. It also has some overview about classes, different weapon types, equipment slots, magic including example spells, spellmaking and enchanting.
But hey, you got the authentic Morrowind experience. Including constantly being low on fatigue, making the air your main melee target, and running from cliffracers.
Only thing missing is getting lost in Vivec.

no, its bad, not just different - its just plain bad - the combat in all games after Daggerfall are bad. I mean, DF can be called bad too, but its 2D sprites swinging (etc.) at each other, so that hides a lot of nonsense and lets your brain just get past it. Once they went full 3D, it has been pretty crap, outside of spells of course (because those just act, generally speaking, like a fps of sorts) and none of the fully 3D versions of ES games have good melee without mods - and Skyrim heavily modded gets it the best way. If I am timing swings in real time and connecting the model of me weapon with an enemies body matters - then it's not old school rpg at all - its really time. Perhaps some game do something akin to an old school system, but a cRPG system is about the character and your real-time skill matter not at all. In ALL 'modern' ES games, your skill mater a lot. Sure, its not imaginary version of DS that people have in their heads, or even the reality of those games - but real time at all.
Dark Age: Origins is old school combat - ES sort of never was, and really became not at all with Morrowind. However, Morrowind fanboys cannot handle ANY critique of the game, so even its shoddy melee combat (which was massively upgrade with one of the most popular mods for the game) is somehow "good", and people hide behind "old school" and other damage control to... damage control it. If your going to put a person in first person and show 3d models colliding, trying to hide behind stats with tons of wiffs is bad design, I might add.
Morrowind is great, but also loaded with plenty of flaws, like literally every single entry in the series - but you fanboys don't care about reality, you care about warped, post-truth dream world - and for the most part, you are the most toxic part of the bethesda fanbase/anti-bethesds fanbase.

This game has my favourite way to introduce the main quest (slight spoiler for your first meeting with Caius Cosades that I don't think you saw). When he offers you the main quest and you accept (I think this is where you left it by refusing), he gives you an out and a lore friendly way to go off on your own and do your own thing away from the MQ without it being a forced choice.
Skyrim kind of does this when you are told "we should probably split up" after escaping the starter dungeon, but you kind of have to ignore the quite obvious peril and Oblivion rams the peril down your throat with the "YOU MUST DO THIS THING!" before you even leave the tutorial.
Morrowind and the Caius meeting doesn't even hint that there is a peril in the first place. So when you have this meeting and you accept, he gives you a solid reason for not doing the quest right away and instead to go off and do your own thing so you get a better understanding of what Vvardenfell is all about. He even tells you what all the more obvious options are (info about guilds and stuff). Only by ignoring this advice and demanding that you begin the main quest does he start you off on it, so you'll know at what point you are actually starting (or refusing) the main quest.
Note if you back to him at higher levels, he'll deem you strong enough to continue the quest without the second chance refusal as he's not meeting some chump that has literally just got off the boat (and probably is still wearing prison clothes).
I know a lot of folks do what you did, but you are not only missing out of some lore and more insight into Caius, but also some extra friends you have around the island that you won't know about until later when you don't need them. If you are still at a low level, go back and ask to start the MQ (save beforehand incase you are too high level) as it will give you at least some direction from where to go and explain so you at least understand why you end up at Imperial prison cells or get killed instantly for theft. Caius is your friend.

    • @MrRattlebones640
      @MrRattlebones640 Місяць тому +1

I love the pacing of morrowind's main quest that felt way more realistic than skyrim and oblivion which have a "False Urgency" throughout. "You have to do this NOW!" No I don't if I wanted I could just go do some quests and wait the whole game before I do it, this creates a disconnect between the gameplay and story whereas in morrowind they were intertwined. Theres no real "Go do this NOW!" point in Morrowinds MQ, its always caius giving you missions that he literally tells you to do at your own pace, even when the mq has some urgency it does not fake it like the later games.

    • @Farlington
      @Farlington Місяць тому +1

@@MrRattlebones640 The way the threat shows up is also natural as at first, all the creatures and people around the island are healthy. The threat then begins to reveal itself as you go about playing your own faction quests and eventually the threat becomes impossible to ignore. All of this without narration, quest markers, or prodding like what happened with other games.
I understand why they changed things in later games as the devs basically explained as much on the original official forums. So many players got lost, didn't follow clues and instead wanted to be told specifically what they had to do before they'd do it. Very few other games treated the players with that kind of respect to their intelligence and were essentially trained by other games to play without thinking. The follow the quest icon trope has to exist or lots of people get confused.
The Dwemer puzzle box was a notorious stumbling block for so many because players were not noticing the room it was in as you had to look up to see the door and that was a completely unknown gameplay "mechanic" for so many in particular console gamers, used to looking at the ground in front of their player characters and not the world around them.
It is said that society has to run at the speed of the slowest people and games also too have to follow that rule. just look at all the great games made by studios that went bankrupt years ago. To survive you have to go simple, sadly (Though hopefully BG3's success will convince them that they've gone too far in that direction and we collectively can deal with more complex games now - sorry for the rant).

  • @Niji01
    @Niji01 2 місяці тому +35

Something VERY important to keep in mind with melee combat in Morrowind is that melee damage is not random, but rather based on the amount of time you spend winding up the attack.
What that means is that if you spam the attack button with something like an iron battle axe, you will be attacking for 1 damage a swing (modified by stats) and burning your fatigue rapidly. This will compound with the slower fatigue regen of the game, the relative defense mechanics, and your chance to miss and cause you to have a horrible time meleeing.
If you instead hold down the attack button until your animation has completed its wind up, you’ll be attacking for 28 damage a swing (modified by stats) and can regenerate fatigue between attacks as you are attacking more slowly. That is 28x the damage and it is possible to do less than 1 point of damage, so it could be an even higher effective multiplier. This is also why hit chance is fine at about 50%. You should be able to 1-3 hit KO almost every enemy in the game with standard gear, except boss and miniboss monsters.
Almost everyone knows fatigue matters a lot in Morrowind, but fully charging your Melee attacks is a much lesser known and just as critical piece of information you’re expected to know by the game designers.
Please make sure to wind up all your attacks to maximum damage and try to maintain a high striking damage with weapons. Morrowind punishes low attack power values heavily.

@@ABardsBallad Great comment. Also (surely mentioned elsewhere) every weapon has an optimum attack-Axes chop, spears and daggers stab and swords slash. Employing the best attack for the weapon you're using hugely increases damage output and player movement decides it: standing still allows a chop, strafing a slash and forwards-backwards a stab. Along with the wind-up time, it does a good job of selling the combat style of each weapon. It's possible to toggle the option to always use the best attack regardless of movement making things easier to the detriment of nuance. I like the fact moving around to get position/avoid your attacker forces you to use sub-optimal attacks sometimes. It makes you more aware of the environment and choosing the best spaces to fight with the weapon you have equipped.

    • @Niji01
      @Niji01 2 місяці тому +4

@@ABardsBallad It’s a major issue with Morrowind players ancient, old, and new. A lot of people end up modding the melee combat system because they have the experience you had here with the rat and other mobs in melee.
They have no idea just how many things they’re doing to fight the system and making it worse for themselves. Spamming low power attacks is only useful with enchanted weapons, since it lets you apply the effect rapidly over and over, but otherwise its extremely detrimental to combat performance.
Try making a generic Redguard, class Warrior, born under the Warrior and grabbing a high damage one or two handed sword in town then walking over to Adamasartus cave near the silt strider and taking some swings at the smugglers there. Keep your fatigue full and wind up the attacks to full power using your best attack style (chop/slash/thrust). It’ll only take a few minutes.
Try it again on the exact same character and weapon using nothing but light attacks instead (tap the attack button) while also being empty on fatigue from nonstop running and jumping. The difference in experience will illustrate what I mean more than any text explanation can. Just watch the difference in the amount of swings it takes to kill and the difference in encounter time.
There are a lot of systems and features in Morrowind most people are inexperienced with, even long time players. Enchanting is another big one as is spellmaking.
For example, it is very easy to craft your own 1mp cast on use trinkets using petty soul gems and cliff racer souls.
Enchanted items regenerate one point of their own magicka reserves every 20 seconds of play time. Resting in-game will also refill enchanted items quickly as well as your own magicka reserves. You can make many very useful simple 1mp trinkets in the game to heal you or deal damage for you or for utility effects, effectively giving you access to multiple magicka bars that all regenerate on the fly. Most people never utilize this system, instead prioritizing struggling to make constant effect enchantments or extremely high power enchantments. These usually need quite a bit of exploitation and metagaming along with savescumming to get working.
I could go on forever but I’ll stop here, haha. Good luck on your adventure!

I can see the confusion if you come from Oblivion on the major/minor/misc skills thing. Minor skills still contribute towards leveling, but do not get as high of a starting bonus to said skill. Misc skills do not contribute to your level progress, like minor skills in Oblivion. All-in-all, good to see ya coming around to the best (no bias from me at all lol) TES game.
Navigation has a lot of tools to use other than just boats/silt striders, like divine/almsivi intervention scrolls and spells, mark and recall, etc. Though these definitely rely a bit on you memorizing where said temples are for intervention. As far as fatigue, yes in morrowind it has a large impact on chance to hit, and so does your agility stat, luck stat, and skill with said weapon class. If you have 10 in short blade, good luck hitting much of anything with a dagger, etc. There is level scaling, kind of. When you are at higher level you can encounter some higher level enemies out in the world, but other enemies, such as in dungeons, and NPCs, have a fixed level. It's definitely worth the chore of learning the game, hope you continue to enjoy it, and excuse the ramblings of a Morrowboomer.

It takes three in-game days for corpses to despawn on their own. With the hardware available at the time of release, leaving the game littered with dead bodies could eventually impact performance and bloat the size of the save files, so the option was given to dispose of the corpses yourself.
NPCs are placed with fixed levels, but monsters and animals encountered in dungeons and in the wilderness are usually leveled. However, leveling affects what creature is encountered rather than making specific creatures more powerful. For example, a daedra encountered in a ruin could be anything from a scamp to a golden saint, depending on your level.

A note for the combat--while the dice rolls might make you think movement isn't important, it's arguably even more broken than in Oblivion or Skyrim. You and the opponent still have to "hit" the enemy model for your attack to roll, and different weapons/spells have different ranges. It feels intuitive to stand still and roll the dice but you can absolutely swing fights in your favor with good movement especially once your speed/athletics are leveled up.
As far as navigation, the game originally came with a fold out paper map that had cities and some POIs on it. You would absolutely not be cheating having an image of that up to give you general directions as that is what we all did back in the day. There are a lot of options for travel, especially from places rather than to them, but I won't spoil them! Awesome video and good luck!

Almost all individual buildings too. I will recommend you finding it online and have it on hand. It will greatly argument your experience.
Also, I don't know if your mana issue comes from the startsign chosen. There is one, which gives like 3x max mana, however, it disable your ability to regen it naturally. So you will require potions and scrolls to regain, which is a huge hurdle and can often become a big issue.

I also use OpenMW. I really like some of the options you can toggle on/off in the OpenMW interface. As for your map, you should be able to pin your inventory map so it stays up after you close your inventory. You can also drag the side of it to make it a more manageable size.
When you join one of the Great Houses, you can quest to get a stronghold. This is your only official player home. But, if all the occupants of a house are dead, you can sleep in the house with no consequences. And dropping items on the ground will stay there. They won't despawn. I often leave things on the floor of the Balmora mages guild so I don't lose them. Or Caius' house. He doesn't mind.
One thing I really like in Morrowind that Oblivion doesn't do is the ability to delete spells from your list. So if you make one, and it doesn't work they way you want, or becomes obsolete for you, you can get rid of it.
And if you hear about exploits while researching, OpenMW has gotten rid of the most game breaking ones, like the soul trap glitch.

So like, if you wander around Red Mountain as a level 2 character you're probably not gonna run into hulking corprus beasts or ash slaves often but you will find the lesser corprus stalkers and blighted rats in their place. But if you enter certain caves or ruins there, you'll find enemies meant for at least level 10 characters, as that is a place for end-of-main-quest progression. That is far from the only example but it is the easiest to think of besides Daedric ruins.

Morrowind is my all time favorite game so its always great to see other people enjoy it. Im looking towards seeing more Morrowind from you.
    - Yeah the movement speed at start is slow but it gets better as you level. Many things affect it: your speed stat, athletics skill, how much you are carrying and event the type of armour you are wearing affects it a bit. I think your speed is one of the few things fatigue dosnt affect at all.
    - Luck stat affects every skill a bit so if you can find enchantments or spells that increase it can be useful.
    - Spell making is one of the most fun things in Morrowind, but can get expensive if you do it alot. Its fun to experiment with it and unlike in Oblivion you can put same effect multiple times in one spell so you can create some fun combos.
    - If you ever get too many spells or just spell you dont use any more you can delete them by shift clicking on the spell.

One of the things that drove me nuts in Oblivion was everyone getting weapons leveled to you, to where everyone has either steel or glass with no mixed equipment. IMO having good stuff ready to go at level 1 really encourages more exploring, because you know there's a chance of getting glass stuff or good enchanted equipment.

Was one of the first computer games I received as a gift from my uncle. I would get home from middle school and play this on my computer in my room at home. My parents thought I begged for that PC for school work, lol. I had never heard of Elder Scrolls though- my uncle just had an idea I would love it. I spend so much time in this world. And even 'cheating' in this game I had fun. I first learned how to modify the stats. So I thought it would be fun to set my acrobatics/jump skill at a HUGE number. I hit space bar and LAUNCHED. But I didn't think about fall damage. You should always consider fall damage. I flew all the way from the opening area to Vivec... and crashed into the ground and died. I don't think I ever laughed so hard. Was the first video game universe I ever experiences that felt "real". Truly was magical.

Not sure if it's been mentioned but your fatigue is tied into almost every roll in the game, from hit/dodge/block chance, spell chance, speech checks, lock picking.
So you have to be careful with your stamina usage, sometimes that means slow walking between enemies in dungeons or resting for 1 hour if you can get away with it. Also potions and stamina regen spells are helpful.

There is a lot you probably don't even realize in a first playthrough or is otherwise hidden.
As for the first quest with fargoth, you can hand him the ring for improved reputation with his friend arielle the trader to get cheaper prices. Arielle also improves relation to the slit strider service in that first village, allowing you to travel cheaper from there. Later a different NPC (Hrisskar i think) gives you a quest to steal some tax money from fargoth's hidden stash, which also contains the ring if you gave it back.
As for the depth of the sidequests, they are indeed less fleshed out than future games, but there is a lot of non-quest content hidden, (Unique items, unmarked quests, the hunt for daedric armor...)which doesn't get randomly spawned in, so discovering stuff is actually super rewarding and gets you to explore.
As for the general tone of the game: morrowind is significantly more hostile than cyrodil, the foreign land itself is hard to traverse and it shows. Makes you think that you actually have to stock up on potions or supplies/repair hammers, which is basically a really soft survival system. You don't have to engage with it from a certain point on, but at the beginning you really need to plan your travels.
As for the leveled enemies: there are only a few creatures that level to you, mostly overland creatures that changes what kind of creature is spawned. There is also a certain boss-type monster in the first dlc that can scale health value REALLY hard if you are a somewhat high level character...
As for the journal organization, that was a later addon from the dlc i believe, the OG vanilla version did not have that feature iirc.
As for the guild/house quest, without spoiling anything keep in mind that some factions actually hate each other and some progress in one guild can have some influence in a different guild...
As for the game asthethics, they really start to differ, depending where you are. You see the difference between and imperial fortress and the build style of the local houses, you mostly traveled in hlaalu and redoran control zone so far, which have quite the similar style (hlaalu has a bunch of wooden farm houses on the southeren area of the map) but once you run into telvanni areas you will see how they differ...(just saying lack of stairs...). All those 3 houses are however still dunmer as race, so on the island you won't see that much of a difference( maybe some dwemer and daedra ruins and thombs) but then you move to the northern island solstheim dominated by nords or the capital mournhold and you see significant difference.
As for fast travel, there are more or less 5 types you can use: 1.Slit Striders (you have no idea about the nostalgia i had when i saw one in the skyrim dlc) 2. Ships. 3 Mages Guild Teleporter. 4 Spells (Almvisis / divine Intervention, mark and recall get you around quite a lot faster) 5. Propylon Teleport (You can collect items which unlocks the function to teleport between certain fortresses, but collecting the indexes is usually more effort than its worth). You can also use the prision mechanic to get teleported as you showed, but thats not really reliable or practical either.
Now for the "how to play the game efficiently" that can mean quite a lot. If i do a casual speedrun, i am done after about 25 minutes. i don't think thats the experience you are looking for. So how about some more practical stuff(This is pure efficiency, you can make everything work, not just what i point out): Don't play beastraces, they can't use most helmets and boots, argonian water breathing is also just a spell and isn't permanent. User friendly races are probably redguard, orc or breton. Breton can make something really cool at the start when combining with the attronach sign making you immune to most magic. There is only 1(2) set daedric armor in game so if you find a piece, keep it (there are some artifacts that are still better). You can stack/loop alchemy quite easily for some crazy effects. There are 2 traders in game that buy items for their actual value(as long as they have the gold for it). Fortifying some skills way beyond 100 is rather easy to do and has some interesting effects. You can make a spell that lowers your own skills for some time for easier training. You can enchant a ring with a 4point permanent healing spell, making you really hard to kill. Knowledge in this game can get you further faster than stats really...

There's an option to find where Fargoth is hiding his gold (and the ring if you give it to him) and you can choose to raid that stash or leave it be. There's a quest in Seyda Neen referencing it, so there's a little bit more to the Fargoth interaction than just choosing whether or not to let him have the ring back.

Basically fatigue level figures in almost all calculations, so best to keep it topped off, especially for use with weapons. So heal, fatigue potions are a must. I also always recommend you buy 2 restore strength potions, as you'll encounter bone walkers in dungeons that will encumber you (removing actual strength levels temporarily), meaning you'll be unable to carry your own weapons and will have to abandon stuff in a pile and walk back naked to buy restore strength potions.

  • @austinwdavidson
    @austinwdavidson Місяць тому

I love how you went in blind and tried to experience as we did back then. The only thing that can't quite be repeated was just how... Insanely original and different it felt back then. A senior in the dorm was the only one who could afford a computer powerful enough for games like Morrowind, so we'd sit in his room and watch him play. He almost never let us play, so we would watch instead.
The first time he booted up Morrowind was mind-blowing. I'd never seen an open world game before. Half Life was the most impressive game I'd seen, but it was still totally linear with very limited mechanics.
Suddenly, this game offered the player total freedom to go anywhere and do anything. Instead of a maybe a dozen guns to pick from, you had hundreds. You could pick plants, make potions, create your own enchantments--even fly if you wanted. You start out as a nobody in rags that nobody likes, but rise to become a living god.
The best part is how "real" it felt and, indeed, feels even now. I've traveled around the world and no other game has captured the "lost in a bizarre place where things clearly have cultural reason, logic, and history, but it's still totally foreign and mysterious.
It is a slow burn when you first get started, but it really is worth the effort to get past the beginning. At some point it'll click and you'll suddenly be rocking and rolling and so engrossed and immersed.
I still play it on occasion. And still vanilla, but with three quality of life suggestions.
    1. Use guides and online help. Even when it came out, most of us had a large map, and later the official physical game guide book, much like online help now. Nothing wrong with that.
    2. Get the boots of blinding speed. I think that's what they are called. You have to go through a couple hoops to get them and can't play with certain beast races, i think, but it's so absolutely worth it for impatient people like me that prefer walking, but hate slow walking in Morrowind.
    3. Focus the first half hour or so on just leveling up a combat skill so you maximize the points you get (look up how points are distributed in Morrowind), but mainly so your odds of hitting whatever you swing or shoot at actually hits. I'm sure the algorithm is more complex than this, but if you can dump all your maxed out level up points into, say, bow ane arrow, by the time you make it to level 4 or 5 (which is still low), you can have a character with maybe at least a 50/50 chance of hitting enemies. That's sooooooo much less frustrating. Once you get it there, then switch back to other skills. Once you get a fighting skill past a certain point, it feels almost exactly the same as Oblivion or Skyrim.
I should note this assumes a fighter or stealth build. I've never done much with magic aside from apocathery and enchanting, both of which are helpful with any build, even at low levels.
I also always kept an actual pen and paper handy for taking real notes. It sounds silly now, but was super helpful in those days.
And don't be disappointed by how similar stuff feels. It's more diverse than you think.
Fin Gleam is also easy to get in the beginning and was always pretty handy.

Nice first impressions video! I like how open minded you are about the way Morrowind does things, I find that a lot of people coming from later games don't always take Morrowinds mechanics on their own terms.
    A couple of quick tips:
° You can pin items in the menu to the screen so that they're visible even when you don't have the menu open - click the box in the top right corner of each menu to toggle this. Very useful for the map in particular
° I see that you're using fire spells a lot. This isn't very effective against Dunmer who have an innate fire resist. Consider diversifying your spells at your local mages guild.
° Most things are based on rng, including speechcraft. The odds of you being successful is usually based on your current fatigue level, including things like bartering and speechcraft as well as how high you jump so make sure to manage your fatigue level!
° A lot of npc:s will give you in character advice about game mechanics if you ask about "little advice", so make sure to do that for some more tips
° Consider reading the games manual. As an old school rpg, Morrowind expects that you might have read the manual first. It's not very long and covers basic game mechanics.

Fatigue affects EVERYTHING. It's not just combat and running speed. Low fatigue hurts your chance to cast spells. It hurts NPC reactions. It makes prices higher. It's a crazy useful stat.
I can't wait to see you get into custom spells and custom enchanting. This game is difficult to a point for new players, but you can become a literal god level character. Enchanted items make up for low magicka.
Also, do a but of everything. Take one melee weapon to offset your spellcasting. Take a skill for every attribute. Diversify for an easier time of being a better overall character.

I will try to give you some tips to whwre find good stuff to nake your gameing experience a bit more enjoyable:
    1. Idk if you found it out yet, but you couldnt hit anything with your dagger cus you had like 5 points in short blade, basicly if you want to hit anything (or cast spells) you need to have high coresponding atribute
    2. Complete Edwina Elbert quests(i think she was named like that) in ald'ruhn mages guild to get super op intervention amulets (one with temple one with divine)
    3. In caldera there is lombard (i think it was lombard) there is shop owner with recal amulet, with that you could forget about trying to cast recal yourself for like 5 mins (still you would have to mark location but 1 part will be easier)
Mark and recal are one of best transportation spells in game which allows you to mark one place and then teleport back to it with nearly no downside
    4. In caldera there is scamp who is merchant in building where orks live (forgot name sorry), with 5k gold and 100% sell and buy ratio so if you sell item worth 1k you get 1k
    5. in cave (illunibi, this cave you will later know better by doing main quest line, dont want to spoiler anything) there are fists of randengulf behind one of six house containers at wnd of dungeon and they are great + near bells is six house bell hammer worth 5k
6.bound weapons are OP, they are daedric (basicly best ones in game) they weight NOTHING AND they give 10+ atribute (like bound spear gives +10 spear atribute), you can get a lot of these spells in balmoras mages guild
    7. Try to complete side quest where you need to find ring in a pond because its one of a kind in whole tes series, also it rewards with very very good amulet of chameleon
Next tips will be about hidden armor or weapons so if you dont want to run with like ebony sword at level 1 you can skip it (or just sell it)
    1. you can get "free" armor in calderas place where orks live on top floor is crate with orcish amor and if you take it some orks will say something like "THIEF" but wouldnt attack you (idk if openmw fixes that but you can try)
    2. on top of one of closets in balmoras towers is ebony sword which is worth like 12k (there is guard near so you need to hide behind pillar)
    3. In caldera mages guild there is a door that leads upstairs and there is whole master alchemy equipment to "borrow" because there is no one up here to see your stealing
as said idk if you will read this but it would help you a lot

You have a really nice, relaxed attitude towards the jankiness of Morrowind, it's cool to see. I was _not_ this zen when I first played (but then, I didn't read the manual and was playing on og Xbox so there were frustrations!). Stick with it-the nuance and character of the game come out through story and dialogue rather than the limited graphical palette, as with many early 3d games made by small teams. The gameplay loop and design are not actually that different from other Bethesda games, just more granular and D&D influenced. You can totally see the bones of Skyrim (and even the Fallouts) in Morrowind.

I’m so glad you picked up MW. I spent 100’s of hours on it back in the day when it came out. All I’d say is take your time, some of the information you’ll be given is outright wrong (NPC’s giving directions etc). In alchemy, Marshmerrow and Wickwheat are very much your friends and be careful what you pick up and where you sleep. It’s very easy to get those two things wrong and wonder what the hell you did! Also, if you’ve downloaded the Tribunal expansion, the Dark Brotherhood assassin who attacks you fairly early on has useful beginner armour. The assassin attack also repeats and the armour is a great source of coin.
Other than that, enjoy what is one of the best games ever created.

Some info about the game: at the start you can also select a menu in which you answer some roleplaying questions instead of just choosing your class or making a new made class. Its quite fun and really satisfies the roleplaying people since this option is not really available in Oblivion or Skyrim. Also another point but about fatigue since you were wondering, in Morrowind you can actually get knocked down by NPCs with a high hand to hand skill and you can't get up unless you get your fatigue bar full again with propably restore fatigue potions. If your knocked down and can't get up its basically like being paralysed and you start taking damage untill you die. I think Oblivion also doesn't have this thing.

"Heavy" attacks are always better and if you want to do any amount of melee, go into the settings and turn on always best attack to maximise your damage per hit. It's a little goofy the way it works, but when you get the hang of it and you get a character going, it feels better than Oblivion, even if only because you'll be knocking enemies down left and right. As for magic, maybe look up the race bonuses or you might end up wasting a bunch of magicka hitting dark elves with fireballs despite their 75% resistance. Most important tip I can give you though is to have fun!

You're community seems to have given you most of what you need to know. The only thing I'd put out there is that the big quests that are side content is in the factions. Most independent side content in the base game is like giving Fargoth his ring. You also have some Deadric Quests but not for the whole pantheon. Don't expect a Meridia quest for example. I really don't know your class because I had this as second monitor stuff while I'm at work so I'd suggest going for a faction that's similar to your class. Also I'd suggest looking up the Great Houses to figure out which one you'll play because they are mutually exclusive. You seem to be mage mostly so go House Telvani, or the ANCAP wizards if you're turned into our odd little community.

Magicka and health will not auto-regen, you need to rest to restore both OR use potions (which are fairly easy to craft if you know the vendor to go to for ingredients and have basic alchemy skills). Trying to cast magic or attack while out of stamina is not advised; the game debuffs your chances to hit or succeed casting significantly. Even though it's slow, I'd walk everywhere until in combat, then switch to running so you can use a full stamina bar.
