- After my previous video comparing the speed of different movesets [ • Moveset Speed Comparison ], some people were still unsatisfied. Nahoc suggested jump dive + jump kick, and brianpso suggested slide kicking. After some investigation, I confirmed (as others had told me) that the fastest combination of jump dive with jump kick was 1 jump dive followed by 2 jump kicks. Furthermore, I found that slide kicking took a decent amount of time to reach full speed, and so it became necessary to extend the race track to allow its full potential to be realized.
Thus, I created the 100 lap system. From the 1-up that starts the first lap to the red coins that end the 100th lap, the race track spans a distance of 1,106,962. That's over a million units! In the end, the competitors placed as follows:
(1) Slide Kicks (maximum average speed 89.725)
(2) Jump Dive + 2 Jump Kicks (average speed ~52.7749)
(3) Jump Dives (average speed 51.45)
(4) Long Jumps (average speed 50.4)
Note that all moves but the slide kicks reach their maximum average speed immediately. The slide kicks on the other hand take a bit of time to assymptote at their maximum average speed. You see, the slide kick repeats every 38 frames. On the frame when we press Z, Mario's speed is decreased to 94% of its current value. After that (and before the next Z press), Mario gains 5.55 speed during the slide kick and recover. Hence, the slide kick's speed will increase until the 94% decreases equalizes with the 5.55 increase, at which points it asymptotes. This happens when Mario's speed range is 86.95 to 92.5, since we have both:
92.5 = 86.95 + 5.55
92.5 * 0.94 = 86.95
And with the speed range of [86.95, 92.5], Mario's average speed becomes 89.725.
However, it should be noted that the 94% decrease is dependent on the specific floor Mario is on. I believe this figure can have values roughly in the range of 90% to 96%, and so the slide kick's maximum average speed will vary depending on which floor is used.
Also, don't feel compelled to watch the whole video. You can just skip to the end of the race if you so desire, since it is quite long.

94% gives the 92.5 shown here.
95% gives 111 max speed.
96% gives an astounding 138.75 max speed!
Assuming this speed is in centimeters per frame (which is ever-so-slightly off, but WHO CARES), that final value is... 41.625 meters per second, 149.85 kilometers per hour, or 93.1 miles per hour! Mario's definitely speeding now, even on the 130 kph Autobahns of Germany! (well, except the parts without a speed limit.)

It took 16 laps for Side kicks to maximize speed of (91). In theory, the difference between them is minimal in a realistic course. Long jumps are favored in speed runs because it can be used at almost any point in the game.

It's funny how longjumps are the slowest, yet they're still heavily used by the top speed runners.

Each unit in this game is about a centimeter. Each frame is 1/30 seconds. Bottom right Mario is going about 87.5 units per frame. 2,625 centimeters per second. 9,450,000 centimeters per hour. 94.5 kph. That's how fast cars drive on the freeway.

I could get more accurate values if I knew how many frames were spent at the peak speed and how many were spent 5.55 below it, but I'm too lazy to find out, it doesn't really matter, and I'm sure it's accurate enough as is.

If this is the case, why are slide kicks not more popular in RTA runs? Is there a difference of input buffer windows that make slide kick recovers more difficult to do optimally in RTA? Is it because slide kick recovers behave differently on slopes? Is it because of the risk of bonking? Does slide kick recovering make it more difficult to adjust angle? A little bit of all of these? Or did people just not realize that slide kick recoveries had the fastest overall speed before?
lol idk. I didn't investigate how slight variations altered the average speed, just what their speed was with perfect input. Taking human error and risk assessment into consideration is beyond the scope of what I intended to research

Probably because you don't have the 90 speed instantly, at first it's about as fast as the long jump

Oh so the slide kick actually has an speed cap! I never knew how it actually worked. It was really fun to watch how the Jump Dive + 2 kicks was taking over the other 2 little by little, I thought the difference would be greater.
This game gotta be the one with the biggest amount of knowledge that the community has discovered. Nintendo should be proud of all of you for making this game stay completely relevant over the course of decades.

More seriously, I had made a video before this doing just 1 lap, and I realized that small differences in speed weren't really perceivable in that short of a distance. So I decided to do a distance so long that nobody could possibly complain about it being too short of a race

What kind of floor does reduction become only 96%? Is 90 & 96 the min and max? 96% speed reduction means mario can move at 138 or so. Considering the 90 in this video, that would be pretty fast.

I love the video, but I have to share something else as well.
I found the remix used here through this very video, and even though I started to notice the various compositional blunders in the song after a while, I grew fond of it and started to like it more and more.
I thought it sounded funny how the song transitions to a completely different sounding part a couple of times, but I didn't really care as I just liked the song in all its simplicity.
Then I found out that sword lord, who uploaded the remix used in this video, didn't actually come up with the remix himself. I spotted the central tunes and sounds of this song in another video and I realized how that song had to be the original music piece, and that sword lord used that song in his remix. The problem is that I still haven't found out who made the original remix of William Tell Overture, since many people have published that video and everyone claims it has a different artist.
There's also that part with the electric guitar, of which I am completely clueless about. There are as many guitar covers of made of William Tell Overture as there are stars in the sky.
All I wanted was to enjoy this song, this lovely electronic track I've heard so many times on Pannen's channel. Now I have no way of knowing where the song's core idea originated from and my eyes have yet again been opened to the cruel reality of people stealing songs for their personal fame. And the saddest thing of all is that the original artist is completely forgotten and probably sobs at every mention of his/her song, supposedly mixed by someone else.
My reality is crumbling.

no you can use zero input BLJ to build up speed on totally flat ground, but is incredibly slow.

A 96 percent speed retention means a top average speed of 135.975.
90 percent speed retention means a max average speed of 52.725, barely slower than jump dive and two kicks.
I want to know if slide kicks would beat out regular jump dives on a 90% floor, since it takes time for slide kicks to accelerate and they're only slightly faster than jump dives.
