What happens if displaced mario somehow catches a star while in a demo? I know it's almost entirely unfeasible but does it add to the star count of one of the files?
Really neat explanation. I love your educational video :D The animations are always so cute! It's interesting that they found out about this problem between the Japanese and US release. They probably exited the course on the WDW rotating platform at some point I suppose.
Just out of curiousity, could if be possible if by chance, at the end of the demo, demo mario is standing on a moving or rotating platform that causes this spawn displacement, would that displacement carry on ingame?
So basically, what you're saying is that depending on where you die on a rotating platform, it can influence your spawn point. I assume this is because when mario dies, the camera points in the spot he died, but the camera does not focus on mario himself. When mario respawns, I believe it tries to take him from the spot the camera went to, but mario is slightly off of this area, so it takes him a bit off where he should be? Just what i got from the video. Pretty cool!

"Reverse Spawning Displacement" seems like a misnomer, since you're not actually reversing the displacement, just changing the order in which objects load to displace yourself.
Can you somehow combine this with the PU trick involving the Boat in JRB? As in, massively displace Mario to end up in the wrong place entirely when returning to stage?
I dont mind if there's no real use that comes out of this, dying in the demos is quality enough. This is seriously impressive. This is some really great breakdown of a game just through seemingly useless bugs.
0:57 But if every point in 3D space moves in the same direction at the same speed, then the entire 3D space moves in that direction at that speed, meaning that the platform itself would move nowhere, relative to the rest of the 3D space. So, we should only observe a stationary platform.

Would it be possible to get a star or die on the spinning pyramid top? That might get some interesting results (or just do nothing because it would land you out of bounds, I guess).
I was just thinking of something... Can Mario teleport? What if you have a pre set HOLP to where you want Mario to end up, do a hat in hand glitch and clone a chuckya, then get grabbed by the same chuckya? Wouldn't Mario release the chuckya which would appear at the HOLP, but it's holding Mario so would he teleport there too?
Holding a chuckya clone + getting grabbed by that chuckya = chuckya gets thrown and Mario gets suck in midair in the being-grabbed animation, thereby softlocking the game
That "can start a new game from not the default location" thing is really interesting. Generally speaking on N64 runs it doesn't matter what's on the files you're not using as long as you start from a new game file (Like in Diddy Kong Racing you can use T.T. from the beginning because he's unlocked for the whole cartridge, not the save file). So in theory one could use this glitch in a speedrun, TAS or otherwise, to get a sort of "head start" if there were a way to displace you in a way that would save time. You'd just die on one file, then start a new one. Course, generally M64 runs are started from "on reset" so maybe not, if you go with that rule. I'm also curious about how that affects the "jumping out of the pipe" animation at the beginning. During the initial animation, is Mario loaded into RAM already (But not visible)? Or does he only load after the full initial cut scene is done and the pipe comes out of the ground? What would happen if the displacement stuck you INSIDE another loading zone? If Mario is already loaded when the cutscene starts and you could displace him far enough to enter the castle, you could theoretically skip the intro cutscene. Though it doesn't seem like there's anything that can displace Mario very far.
Would it be possible to displace the spawning location in such as way that Mario enters an unintended loading zone in the demo? Like, getting Mario to enter the indoor slide in the Cool Cool Mountain demo?
I asked this on the TASVideos forums, but I don't know how often you go there so I'm hoping you read your youtube comments (I'll post this on the other channel too, please don't see it as spam I promise I'm just trying to be helpful!) Can the current Pit and the Pendulum 2x A press strat be done on the random setting? From the Pit and the Pendulum star, it's possible to get on the pendulum closest to the star, do an AB kick off the wall while grabbing the star, and fall all the way down to the red coin platforms. I've confirmed that it's possible to get the star without an additional A-press and leave the level with spawn displacement to land back on the TTC ledge, so I think this could save an A-press.
So I found a glitch on SM64 that allows you to have a fixed position camera in the area outside of BBH and the area outside the castle. I couldn't find a way to find this inside the castle. I'm not sure if this has already been found, though.
