Great tips! And I agree: Don't touch. And even if a leaf does die, it will push out a new one it its place. But... Hear me out. I was struggling with leaves getting stuck. Here's what I did: Increased humidity, I water the plants more often with less water for consistent moisture uptake, installed fans for movement, and then: In in my plant room, I have roundabout 14 grow lights. And I have timed them to go on one after another, with about 10-15 minutes delay, from east to west. And I turn them off in the same order. My idea was to replicate the rising and setting sun, causing the plants to follow the light. That adds additional movement and makes it easier for the new leaves to emerge. I don't know if I just got lucky or if it is really helping, but I haven't had any leaves got stuck since.

PS: That watering regime I only use when they are having issues. Otherwise I water properly, as in letting a substrate dry out appropriately.

My "young" philodendron Veracosum had a new leaf coming out, and the tip of the new leaf dried up which wouldn't allow the leaf unfurl. So I cut off the dried part, and helped it unfurl the leaf. Now I have a nice new leaf. It stayed in the cataphil for sooooo long, that I finally had to do something. I believe if I didn't cut off the dead crusty tip, then it would not have ever come out. I believe the leaf would have continue to dry out and die. So I'm glad I did what I did. But I understand the reason for the message.

I just found your channel and am enjoying your content, very knowledgeable and concise. This is the first time I have seen this issue addressed. I have a Calathea Orbifolea that has had a new rolled up leaf in limbo for at least 3 months or more. It looks fine, it just won’t unfurl. There have been a number of other leaves that have come in with no problem. I will try more humidity as was suggested. Thanks for the tips. Hope it works🤞

Well, saw this video exactly 2 days too late🤣. Have had plants for 26 years, have literally NEVER seen this, until recently gifted a PPP for xmas. It happened on 2 different areas on the plant. 2 days ago I gently & slowly pulled 1 of them out, lol. Oops. I left the other because I wasn't sure I had enough room to be able to get it. I have a plant room w/near greenhouse environment, I can't think of a single reason this plant is doing this. I don't trust the PPP, although it was a very thoughtful gift, I never wanted 1. I have other philodendrons & STILL have never seen a plant do this before. Wonder if it's just yet another issue with ppp. 🤷‍♀️. Great video, thank you!

BTW I think Philodendrons that have a moss pole(a real moss pole which is kept moist at all times and plant can grow roots in the pole), rarely do this, even the varieties that usually face this problem a lot.

I also heard that some philodendron species use cataphylls as a way to unfold in nature. When a new leaf is emerging, the cataphyll rots away from moisture and it sort of lubricates the new leaf coming out.

The one thing that has worked for me every time is to spray the stuck leaf close as to wet it without wetting the whole plant. I do this twice a day. My silver sword is notorious for getting stuck, I have never had any issues doing it. I also spray the leaf once a day as it unfurls until it is fully unfurled and this prevents weird warping of the shape. It can then expand and grow in it's normal shape. It is the main PITA when dealing with this species, but it is fixable.

before Pink Princess, I had these issue with three other plants:
Philodendron Black Cardinal. all three recent leaves were stocked and never managed to unfurl those. then I figured out he hates when I let his soil dry completely and solved his problem by watering more frequently.
the second one was a pink Syngonium. she had seven or eight unfurled leaves! then I figured out her pot is too small for her roots. I repotted her in a huge pot and she's very happy since then.
third one, was a Philodendron Silver Sword. he never had this problem until I saw lower leaves are yellowing and the soil stays wet for too long. he was very close to root rot. I repotted her in a very chunky soil and she managed to finally open that leaf. it's just slightly damaged.

Helpful...thanks. VIEWER REQUEST: Can you do a video on how to make a large plant small again? Example: Eighteen months ago I had a Philo Billietiae with 4-inch leaves, now they are monster-size, as are some of my other plants. I need to get them small again, and I don't see any babies springing forth. Also if I have a large plant and want to make small plants to share, how is this done? Most of my plants are Philos and they get big, some with very large leaves and thick stems. Thanks!

This happens to my Florida Beauty several times, about 4 or 5 pots with one plant having the same problems on its 4th and 6th leaves. The petiole would snap if you leave it and the leaf will eventually die.
I have since monitored other Florida Beauty and helped the leaves out of the cataphyl before they also snap and that seems to be the only solution I can think of.
I have several theories and one of them is because I use grow lights in the evening (20 hrs full light a day) thus forcing the new leaf to outgrow the cataphyl (as opposed to crisping/browning) that has not withered.

    • @amrys3027
      @amrys3027 2 роки тому

I have to agree. The only way to save the leaf is to help it out of the cataphyl. Even with a chance to damage the leaf, "do nothing" (as suggested in the video) will 100% lead to the leaf snapping off, which would be the worst outcome anyway.

I am guilty I did release it and it popped out but it was leafless looked like it was a deformity just a stumpy little stem with a stringy brown bit on the top. HOWEVER. A new leaf was growing from the stump that I released! Why is this. I do believe the sheath got damaged earlier this year I had some thrip damage.

I have a Gloriousum that constantly gives me torn leaves. I tried misting it, pulling the leaf out too to no avail. What does work ito CAREFULLY use a toothpick or something small with a sharp point and at the stem of the leaf where it’s folded over to insert the tip of the TP in and slowly run it the length of the leaf lifting up as not to puncture the leaf. Repeat this on the other side. This loosens the tense on the leaf and in 2-4 days the new unblemished leaf is opening up before your eyes. I have done this on my Verrucosum too and it works for me.

After many years of seeing such trouble with some of my philodendrons and anthuriums I came to conclusion that the root of this problem is in a moving air. Those plants are located exactly on the way of air stream from heating/cooling system. I did not find a universal solution. Right now I have a huge vertical fan to send it's air across the heating stream and a humidifier a little bit under the cross point. It is better but not a 100%.

I live in a dry climate and put a little plastic baggy on the leaf that is trying to unfurl. I don't close up the baggy so there's air flow. I've only done this for my gloriosum and find the leaf opens up faster and undamaged. I do remove the baggy every now and then to air out completely and put it back on. Again. I live in a drier climate in the southwest USA so not sure if this would work elsewhere.

I have a bird of paradise with three stems. It is outdoors and one stem has its leaves stuck REGULARLY. They just won't get out completely and will start to unfurl with the tip still inside the mother leaf. Even a new leaf may grow from a stuck leaf and will get stuck too, making a mess. So i have to get them out myself, although it wouldn't avoid the stem from doing this.
The other two stems are in the same conditions (essentially the same plant) but they haven't done this thing ever, so I suspect it may be due to other reasons.

I'm trying to not let her soil completely dry and once a day I mist water on her(I can't stop myself from doing that. I feel that's the only thing I can do right now). I wish these help her open her new leaves without problem.

I don't mean to contradict this guy but, I wonder if everyone says it's humidity or watering just because it seems like the logical answer. Has anyone actually tested this? My Melanochrysum grows on an irrigated moss wall. The humidity is generally high. The Melanochrysum is actually dripping, because its releasing excess water. However it still gets its leaves stuck.
I live in the UK, where it gets quite cold. But the room I keep my plants in is heated. I noticed that the leaves come out unstuck when the room is warm, if I crack the window and the temperature drops, They get stuck again. I know heat affects humidity, so it's hard to know exactly. But I think warmth has more of a role. The verrucousum that lives next to it never has a problem, probably because it's adapted to colder weather.

My silver sword is doing this, 2 small SS plants growing in the same pot. They both have leaves that are stuck, they are fully emerged except for the tip. The big problem is that in the bigger plant, it has a stuck leaf, stayed stuck so long that it grew a full sized leaf out of it, which is ALSO stuck. Then that one is beginning to put out the first bit of another leaf. What am I supposed to do? I am trying to leave it alone, today I drenched the leaf by just pouring water on them a couple times, we'll see what happens. I don't want to wait and lose 3 leaves in a row! 4 if you count the other SS with the stuck leaf. I had this issue with my prince of orange and they just never unfurled and died.

Mine was getting bright indirect light, the room it was in was at 65-70% humidity, good chunky mixture, and I just ended up throwing it out. It looked so bad in the end and just stopped growing new leaves. There were no pests or diseases either. It was the only Philo I've ever had and I'm never getting another. Alocasia's are easier to deal with than a Philo 😑

And water evaporates after spraying within minutes, there won't be any rot, right? I dont know why this should be so risky to do.. but yeah, look at his plants... :D
