Plant Care | How not to Burgundy Princess leaf unfurling Epic FAIL | Didn't go as planned 💀

  • Burgundy Princess has a new leaf struggling to get out of its cataphyll. I'm impatient and typically help my stuck leaves get out of their cataphyll. Yes, this is a NO-NO, but heck I like to live on the edge. Obviously, a few more things to learn but I will continue to help my plants. Next time I can use some water while helping my leaves unfurl. This one turned out to be an Epic FAIL!
    Thanks for watching. Until next time, which I hope comes with better results.

    I literally just did this to my Burle Marx philodendron, I thought it was over. Then I watched your video, read some comments, and now I have hope that it’ll grow another leaf. I’m so grateful for your video. Thank you so much.

    Oh no 😭 thanks for sharing.
    For those watching, i normally wouldn’t help it if it’s poking out the other end. If anything, a safe thing to do is just loosen both sides of the cataphyll. That way it can work itself out. Keep the soil moist during this time as well.
    I was wincing watching you pull this out, Darryl. If you look, the bend is what you want to avoid. It’s the base of the leave that is threatening to break off. Which is obviously why we wanna help it. But if you pull it out at a right angle like that it adds additional pressure on that bend. Which is why it snapped.
    In this case, since the tip was already out, i would have just loosened the cataphyll to let it work itself out. Plants will do their job. Give them a little help but don’t do it for them. I’m saying this for everyones sake. It’s awful losing a leaf and ive definitely been there too ❤️ I’m sorry for your loss. Hopefully you’ve gotten a fat juicy leaf since this has been posted. 🥰

    Should've put it on amoss pole, the consists watering to keep the moss wet also helps lubricate the new leaves

    Alway spray soft water on and in the cataphyll some minutes before trying this... It softened. More generally, since I spray my plants a lot of times by day I have never had this problem again...

    I found a Monstera Aurea and have it in my care now….. it was unfurling it’s 4th leaf when I found it…..and the sheaths on the other 3 leaves never have done anything. They’re there still, but nothing has happened. I have since then gotten another beautiful leaf (first in my care) and another already coming in but will the other 3 leaves die from the sheaths that never did anything on them? I feel like it’s been too long to try anything but I am certainly willing to try if i’m gonna lose them

    • @mypingtopia
      @mypingtopia  2 роки тому

      The three leaves with sheaths still there may end up dying. You can mist those leaves with water that may loosen the leaf from sheath, but I’m afraid if the leaves been that way for a long time, they may die. However, good that you are getting new leaves growing.

    • @mypingtopia
      @mypingtopia  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks for watching. Sorry late reply. I don’t have this plant anymore as I transitioned to carnivorous plants specifically Pinguiculas. Though, for helping a leaf come out of the sheath, try this. Wet a q tip. Mist the stem. Twist the q tip under the new leaf coming out and I’ve seen that work. You can use a razor to cut the sheath, but you risk cutting the new inside and then you still have a damaged leaf.

    • @DollyMat
      @DollyMat 2 роки тому +1

      @@mypingtopia thanks for this. I actually thought of using a q tip and did this but only to wet the leaf. It was to big. Mines is a very young plant so the head of the qtip was too big so I resorted to using a pin to lightly trace the leaf through the caterphil on the left. It worked but I was lucky not to damage the leaf. Also to be honest the leaf may not of been stuck I was just impatient.

Tip: If you can't help yourself from helping your plant unfurl a new leaf. I get it. Try a wet q-tip and twist it up through the new leaf.
