  • I know a lot of people can sometimes struggle to get bigger leaves on their Philodendron Melanochrysum.
So I thought I would share my experiences and what I have found has worked in growing bigger leaves on this beautiful velvety philodendron.
I also dive into the etymology of the name

Hi Memo. Have you ever tried mycorrhizal fungi on plants bevore? Maybe the Melano responds better to your soil mix because it's organic material, not mineral material. So maybe it's got something to do with a special soil biology, some symbiosis of some kind? I have had really striking results on two same-size cuttings of rhaphidophora hayii this summer. My husband had looked through his microscope to asses some compost tee mixes he'd made. When he was finished he would everytime give those few drops of deluded compost tea liquid (5ml) to one of the plants, everytime the same plant. It grew much faster and larger than the one that didn'd receive compost tea. Amazing, that German compost, filled with soil microbiology from our temperate climate, still has a significant effect on tropical plants! I'm trying to recreate this with two cuttings of epipremnum pinnatum Skeleton Key. I hope I will see the same result =) Okay, enough of me here.. just some thoughts.. :D Cheers

Hey! would your husband be open to sharing the compost tea he makes? It sounds like it’s working great and I’d love to look into a homemade supplement for my plants!

My melano is huge, and I have no idea what to do with it at this point. So big that it's getting ruffles. Outgrowing my cabinet quickly that's for sure.

Thank you for this. I also have a larger one in aroid mix and a baby one in pon. The one in pon is struggling. Very interesting. Again thank you.

I have one in leca, it grows up a support so fast but still has tiny leaves. It has light and good fert. It got so tall I propped it and have some now in my aroid mix, they are happy, grow like weeds but such small leaves. I wondered if there were small and large varieties but , no. I now have some cuttings in my tannin higher heat and humidity and more light and they are slightly larger...sigh.....

Uuh what's the plants on the right side? The big dark one?
The point with the humidity surprises me.. I find that it struggles with new leaves in lover humidity..
But I am not sure if it is light, too..
    Greetings from Germany,
    Linda :)

Melanochrysom should so pretty decent in medium lighting as well. I think it is humidity. Onlyplants also noticed the humidity plays a big part in growing bigger leaves even while climbing.

Mine is in aroid potting mix and keeps producing smaller and smaller leaves...I think that since it is a middle cutting it needs time to give bigger leaves? I don't know..

yes it does take some time if it is a middle cutting, maybe try growing it on a plank i find my plants on planks mature much faster. i did a video a while back on it too ua-cam.com/video/tajeM7L1H08/v-deo.html

Mines in pon and it’s got really small leaves about 1.3m high. I will cut soon and try in Aroid mix and pon to compare. Interesting

hi. What if the leaf of melanochrysum doesn't turn green for a long, long time?

    • @Houseplantygoodness
      @Houseplantygoodness  2 роки тому

Do you mean the leaf takes along time to fully harden to green?
