Chris Cornell explained the song's origins: "I wrote it in my head driving home from Bear Creek Studio in Woodinville, a 35-40 minute drive from Seattle. It sparked from something a news anchor said on TV and I heard wrong. I heard "blah blah blah black hole sun blah blah blah". I thought that would make an amazing song title, but what would it sound like? It all came together, pretty much the whole arrangement including the guitar solo that's played beneath the riff. I spent a lot of time spinning those melodies in my head so I wouldn't forget them. I got home and whistled it into a Dictaphone. The next day I brought it into the real world, assigning a couple of key changes in the verse to make the melodies more interesting, then I wrote the lyrics and that was similar, a stream of consciousness based on the feeling I got from the chorus and title." - RIP Chris Cornell
Cornell is the co-founder of the Chris & Vicky Cornell Foundation, which she formed with her late husband in 2012 to support children who are impacted by the traumas of foster care, poverty, addiction, child abuse and neglect. I think it's about the sons (and daughters) of Hollywood not the sun, To some Hollywood... it's a dark place where no light escapes a black hole. Who knows what horrors where recited in newsanchor monotone on the night he wrote it.
As a lifelong musician (bass guitar, keys, percussion), I've always felt that Chris Cornell's vocal talents lived in a realm occupied by few others. I'm a lifelong resident of the Seattle area and was there during the early years of "grunge". I heard Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and many other local and influential bands in the Seattle scene before they found major success. It was an amazing time 😊
Man, I have never seen a more unique singer like Chris Cornell, a unique voice, tons of talent, perhaps the hottest and most gorgeous/beautiful/good looking front man ever. The man was genetically engineered to be a Rock Star. We miss him so much!
I saw an interview with Chris. he talked about writing this song completely in his head driving home from a gig, including the guitar solo in his head. Got home and sang it into a tape player because it was so late. But he remembered every note in the AM and this was born. Amazing talent
YHWH chose them. That's how good this was. Revelation 6:12 *And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood* There's levels to everything.
When he died a few artists covered this song like in the couple days after he died at live shows, some of them ended the song right after the lyric "no one sings like you anymore" it was a nice touch from them.
R.I.P. Chris Cornell. What a great throwback to this great hit, i like this song when came out but i truly appreciate Chris job at Audioslave when joining forces with Tom Morello which btw just released a new collab song with BabyMetal, living legend 🎸 🙌 Once again tysm for sharing this lovely Aileen.❤
I remember when Soundgarden won the Grammy for "Best Metal Performance" at the awards that year. The band went onstage, Chris held the statue and said "Well... it's not a metal song, but we'll take it."
As a Bass Player, I need to say that I love hearing the Bass getting so much love on your channel. It's usually so overlooked because it's not as flashy as the guitar or drums.
I don’t see people suggesting it, but I’ve always loved Soundgarden’s Spoon Man, about a busker in Seattle who played the spoons (he features on the track and official video)
When I was younger, we'd go over to Seattle and listen to Chris play at the sound garden. He is/was amazing. If you really want to be blown-away, there is a version of this song with the instrumentals removed. His voice is hypnotic.
Incredible years, I was enjoying them and Pearl Jam at the same time ..... I remember running to my favorite record store to buy this album as soon as I listened to them on the radio ..... 😎
Pure talent! I remember the first time hearing this song when it came out and was blown away! “Fell on black days” and “outshined” are some other great soundgarden songs! Great song and reaction!
Everyone has mentioned the drive home writing this song, but he’s also gone on to say that the lyrics were just an essential word salad and they were seen as just another instrument played in the song. I think people will see what they want in the lyrics, but according to Chris, he heard someone wrong on TV and thought he heard Black Hole sun and he thought that should be the name of a song. I love when a song comes together so easily and it turns into a massive hit that touches so many peoples souls.
Kim Thayil was an underrated guitarist. Not my favourite Soundgarden song by a long shot but i don't get sick of it, which is a sign of a good song. "The Day i tried to Live", "Fell on Black Days", "Pretty Noose", "Blow up the Outside World", "Just like Suicide", "Rusty Cage", or "Outshined" are much better songs
I will always recommend the songs, "Beyond The Wheel" and "Slaves and Bulldozers" for people who really want to see just how much range Cornell truly had in his voice.
Outshined or Slaves and Bulldozers would be a great peek into Soundgarden's Badmotorfinger era. Just about any Temple of the Dog song but after Hunger Strike most react to Say Hello To Heaven, but Call Me a Dog would also be a great choice. More Audioslave songs? I am the Highway, Show Me How to Live, Doesn't Remind Me, Cochise, Be Yourself or Out of Exile. Solo stuff? Seasons, When I'm Down, Sunshower, Nearly Forgot My Broken Heart, The Promise (official video) When Bad Does Good (official video). Covers? Billie Jean, Nothing Compares to You, Patience, I Will Always Love You. He also does some great duets with Chester Bennington.
Saw Guns N Roses not long after he died. Halfway through the set Axl says, "For Chris." And they did a cover of this song. Even GNR were fans of his. Have to admit though this is one of those songs I don't seek out too often as when it was released it was everywhere! Turn on MTV or the radio and odds greater than not you were going to hear this song. Shopping at the Mall or grocery shopping? You'd hear it. Going to the gas station? You're hearing it. Trying to sleep? Music company was beaming in via satellite directly into your dream. There was no escape! It's a great song and deserved it's time in the sun, but after the 10,000,000th time. It was the AC/DC "You Shook Me All Night Long" of the 90s.
I was driving when I 1st heard Outshined I immediately flipped a U turn & went straight to record store. Fell on Black Days live is also amazing. Non State Actor from their final album are a few other great songs. RIP Chris thanks for the music
Way to go Aileen, another great break down and reaction. What a great way to start off the week. This is such a great album i used to put the cd on repeat. Spoonman is another great one and so are other songs your followers have already mentioned. As always sending love and be blessed
If you haven’t checked out “nearly forgot my broken heart” one of his last songs, the music video was pulled offline after his death (if you dig around you might be able to find it) because it features Chris as a cowboy being hanged at the gallows. But so many of his songs (looking back) just sound like him screaming for help. The first lines of that song he says, “every time I stare into the sun, trying to find a reason to go on, all I ever get is burned and blind”
And what's crazy and sad is the Line hang my head drown my fears till you all just disappear. Was basically him foreshadowing his extreme anxiety issues. That we/fans didn't learn about till Many years later. RIP Chris thank you So SO very much for all your music and fact you did it ao long with the Extreme anxiety issues you and Chester had. Love and miss you both very VERY much.
I've got a weird connection with this song that will always stick with me. The first time I did LSD this song just came out and was all over the radio, seemed like it played through the whole trip, will never forget it.
I’ve been looking forward to you covering this song since it was one of my favorites way back when! Which at the same time, makes me uncomfortable knowing how long ago that is now 😭 I’ve always loved how you’re able to pick up on any sort of references/symbolisms in music videos and this was no exception, like when you pointed out the husks people seemed to be. You breaking down videos in the ways you do has always been one of my favorite things about you/this channel in general ❤️
Chris was a genius in his writing, there will never be another like him. But again all of the biggest bands of the 90's were that way. So many songs about depression, drug usage and getting along with everyone.
This song always made me imagine a meeting of the Beatles & Black Sabbath. The video reminds me of the little Viewmaster toy from my childhood. Depending on what kind of backlighting you held them up to, they could look really freaky. Also reminds me of a David Lynch fever dream.
I don't know if this was mentioned prior but this video at the time used something very new and very expensive. CGI is everywhere today however this was the first in a music video. It was the most expensive music video ever at the time. RIP Chris. All those lonely nights driving in my car listening to Sound garden changed me forever.
When I was 4, not only was this song the first song I heard from them, Black Hole Sun was also the first music video I saw from them and it was definitely was a trip. Im 33 now and still a huge fan.
I only got to see Chris Cornell live once and it was actually a random occurrence. I was hanging out one saturday afternoon at a bar in Austin, TX and Chris Cornell walks in. There was a local band playing a gig and they wrapped up their set. The guitarist from the local band knew how to play Chris' entire catalogue and Chris found out what a big fan the local guy was. Chris was talking to the guitarist and next thing you know Chris got on stage and sang for about 30 minutes with the local guy playing acoustic. It was absolutely amazing and extremely cool of Chris. Sadly within a year or two of that was when Chris took his own life. I wish I had got to see him play with one of his bands as well, but getting to see him happy and enjoying life in an intimate setting is one of the greatest experiences of my life. It made his death so much tougher as well. He was a kind and tortured soul. There will never be another voice like his. DO OUTSHINED! Favorite Chris Cornell song and one of my favorite songs not only of the grunge movement, but one of my favorite songs of all time. Seriously if you want to be blown away with Chris Cornells vocals do Outshined by Soundgarden or Show Me How To Live by Audioslave (and do the studio version for that one).
As a 21 year old that has gone through 3 deaths I. The last 5 years. My father, and both of his brothers ;(. Anytime I listen to this song it makes me cry
Beautiful song. Always loved it. When my niece graduated high school I videoed it and edited it and decided to use this song Haha. Her mom (my sister) didn’t appreciate that. 😝😝😝
Omg darling, you're in for such a bitter-sweet treat! Thank you for letting me re-live my early 90's angsty teens through your eyes! Chris was a beautiful man in every way, a lovely person, master musician & simply, an etherial being. The great tragedy of him was that despite being so incredibly talented, beloved & successful, he still felt so chronically inadequate & unloved.
I saw Soundgarden perform at Lollapalooza '96 (Randall's Island Park, NY). Their set was incredible and it was almost as if I was listening to their studio recordings. Chris Cornell did Black Hole Sun, solo. Just him and his guitar, and it was amazing. He is, by far, one of my favorite vocalists.
Well done, Aileen. While Kurt Cobain was the heart of the Grunge Revolution, Chris Cornell was the soul of it. His voice carried with power and gave throughout his time with Soundgarden and Audioslave, and he definitely is missed. Recommendations: Rusty Cage, My Wave, Fell on Black Days, The Day I Tried to Live, Burden in My Hand, Tighter and Tighter, Ty Cobb
Also a really good Soundgarden song you should listen to is beyond the wheel, you can really hear how crazy his vocal range is in this song. And someone else mention Slaves and Bulldozers and Outshined, highly recommend you listen to those songs too. God they are so good.
Not sure if it’s BS, but I heard the yelling part of “BLACK HOLE SUN!” The part Aileen identifies at the 6:24 mark, was Chris screaming into the strings of his guitar.
I'VE BEEN WATCHING YOU FOR A WHILE . YOUR TALK GAME IS ONE OF THE BEST ON UA-cam. NO FLATTERLY EITHER. YOU ARE VERY PROFESSIONAL IN YOUR DELIVERY. LOVE YOU AS WELL LOVE ❤. TAKE CARE.
I don't think I've ever seen this video in full before; but that image of the woman with a Joker smile holding a meat cleaver over a fish is very famous.
Soundgarden was the first band that got me into Grunge. I was 7 living in Seattle when I saw the music video for "Black Hole Sun", and I followed his music from then on. He really was one of the very few celebrity passings that hurt my soul.
Hello, Aileen. Here are some recommendations for some video madness to hold your attention. Peter Gabriel was the lead singer for Genesis before leaving for a solo career. His videos for SHOCK THE MONKEY, SLEDGEHAMMER, BIG TIME, & DIGGING IN THE DIRT, are not only hood music but great visual feasts. Love your channel. And enjoy
I believe it was Dave Grohl that said the “grunge” movement or the Seattle movement was about trying to successfully marry the melodic creativity of the Beatles and the hard metal of Black Sabbath and the only group and song to successfully achieve that goal was “Black Hole Sun” by Soundgarden
You're bringing back my childhood recently😂 songs like this I have completely blanked from memory, but hearing it again reminds me it was played on Kerrang/Scuzzy every day
fun fact: chris corneil blow out 10 Numann U47 Mic.s getting the BLACK SUN loud chorus part in the studio singing Black Hole Sun (the ribbions broke and each cost 10 grand)
This video used to give me the creeps back when I was a young teenager. So much so that I would change the channel when this song came up and miss all this greatness. I have changed my ways since then lol. He is one of my favorite artists ever.
I love your reactions,so real so on track. It's great to see someone who can say what they mean without trying to just impress . The great part is that's impressive.
Soundgarden is a must. I like that some bands are exploring this sound again as well. The new Teenage Wrist album has some grunge vibes to it. Highly recommend you check it out. Their song “sunshine” is constantly on repeat for me.
on superunknown album super deluxe ..... holds one of the most meaningful songs to my life and its the demo version of this song with him playing all instruments .... this song will forever be something i cant explain with words . it truly saved me
I'm a 55 year old Aboriginal American and this is in my Top 10 best songs I ever heard. And I know all the words and sing them at least three time a day.
This was always a great song to me... then when I listened to it through headphones for the first time... I mean reallly listened... to the bass... the heavvy guitars.... the background distorted screaming... it became my favorite song ever.
Soundgarden was formed in the early 1980's and was a staple in the city of Seattle for many years. If "grunge" had a distinctive sound it was largely due to how close the music scene in Seattle really was. All of the biggest bands to come from here came later and so in that you might call Soundgarden and Chris Cornell the Godfathers of grunge.
Chris Cornell explained the song's origins: "I wrote it in my head driving home from Bear Creek Studio in Woodinville, a 35-40 minute drive from Seattle. People often tell this story as if the song doesn't have any deep meaning, but the song and mv still have a message to catch.
That may be true but what a helluva coincidence that the black sun is an occult reference, specifically to Nazi's. Look up "black sun occult"
@@furyzxzxmv?... Marcus Veltri? 😮 jk

Sure thats the reason lol. So much symbolism in this video, it can't be that simple.
Outshined, Fell on Black Days, Day I tried to Live, Slaves and Bulldozers, Rusty Cage all excellent options to follow Black Hole Sun
May I suggest Jesus Christ pose to your very fine list
Face pollution.
She already did Fall on Black Days
Blow up the outside world also
Cochise
You said that right Chris "NO one sings like you anymore" 😢😢😢

My favorite solo song of Chris Cornell is “When I’m Down”. Deep, emotional, and morbidly beautiful!
R.I.P. Chris Cornell.

THAT WHOLE ALBUM IS GREAT!! I also love the song 4th of July! THAT song is so goood!

A warped version of the idealistic American dream. The guy combing his hair played a demonic entity in Twin Peaks called Bob.
A scary guy.

Yes, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam and above all Nirvana!
Norah Jones' tribute upon learning of his death of this song is also beautiful
Glad to see someone else mention Norahs cover.
It was the same theater, and hers was the next show there after Soundgarden.

One of the best songs of the last 30 years. The dissonance of the chords, the story it tells, grunge awesomeness at its best.

The Norah Jones cover from 5 days after Soundgarden's last show (at the same theater) is the best tribute any artist did.
a gorgeous tribute. very moving.
Soundgarden’s rusty cage is awesome.
I feel blessed, grown up with stuff like that, I love that U like it! Big Hug!
Blow up the outside world is their best song. 4th of July is the darkest song I’ve ever heard in my life
Despite the randomness of how he got the title, the song and the mv still have a message, it's not an empty song.
This song and music video were MASSIVE at the time. I miss the 90's...
These guys were doing face warping, long before UA-cam was a thing. Take THAT thumbnails! Man, the 90s music videos were art. What a fevered-dream.
This video used to give me the creeps back when I was a young teenager. So much so that I would change the channel when this song came up and miss all this greatness. I have changed my ways since then lol. He is one of my favorite artists ever.
Again, thanks for your comments! Love the work you do.
I love your reactions,so real so on track. It's great to see someone who can say what they mean without trying to just impress . The great part is that's impressive.
Coldplay -Fix you, Warning sign, yellow, in my place, Clocks, Amsterdam, Viva la Vida, Coloratura, etc
Say Hello 2 Heaven is a great one!!!!
Black hole sun won’t you come and wash away the rain. This one is my all time favorite all the rifts and his voice were amazing in this
RIP CHRIS CORNELL!!!! Soundgarden & audio slave are great bands
I recommend the Norah Jones cover of this (performed in memory of Chris Cornell) - it's really lovely and helps spotlight the songwriting.
Soundgarden is a must. I like that some bands are exploring this sound again as well. The new Teenage Wrist album has some grunge vibes to it. Highly recommend you check it out. Their song “sunshine” is constantly on repeat for me.
His solo stuff is AMAZING (and the James Bond theme) for Casino Royale in 2008(?) NOT 100% sure of the year. That song is called "You know my Name"
on superunknown album super deluxe ..... holds one of the most meaningful songs to my life and its the demo version of this song with him playing all instruments .... this song will forever be something i cant explain with words . it truly saved me
@AileenSenpai another song that touches on a sensitive topic is "Cycle of Abuse" by Biohazard
My crusty old gen-x heart is happy (as it can get) that you're listening to this.
I grew up on 90s grunge!!!
R.I.P. CHRIS CORNELL!!!
🎸🙏🏽
One of my favorite videos as a kid in the 90's
Soundgarden was formed in the early 1980's and was a staple in the city of Seattle for many years. If "grunge" had a distinctive sound it was largely due to how close the music scene in Seattle really was. All of the biggest bands to come from here came later and so in that you might call Soundgarden and Chris Cornell the Godfathers of grunge.
Another day dawns is an amazing band, I'd love to see your reaction to their song psycho or bitter
Wow. I have not heard this song in years. Still love it
Keep up the great work. So much fun. Have some more fun to share to us.
Hey Alien Senpai. Love your music reactions. I have Chris's last solo album cove tattooed on my forearm.
