Extreme Wildlife Photography and Winter Camping ⎸ Wild Reindeer
Вставка
- Опубліковано 8 лют 2024
- In the mountains of Norway, winter has set in. A storm is brewing, and winds over 100km/h are forecast. Perfect conditions for camping and wildlife photography!
Join me behind the scenes to witness my most extreme wildlife photography adventure to date. Over the course of 48 hours, I snowshoe hike over 40 kilometres, endure some of the most extreme weather in my life, capture many thousand images, and spend precious time in the presence of the nomads of the north - wild reindeer.

Absolutely stunning! Thank you so much for this video!
Thank you so much!
to me it seems everything you present is perfect .Your footage ,your images as well as your story telling in a not native language. That compared with your awareness of the needs of animal
and trying to minimize their disturbance should make you an ambassador for canon or whatever brand soon ( if you want )
Thank you so much for such kind words! I greatly appreciate your support!
Tobias you have created another beautiful series, beautiful atmosphere and in beautiful light condition.
Thank you so much!
Spectacular video! Truly amazing work gentlemen!!
Thank you so much!
Hei Tobias. Denne er virkelig en av de beste videoene jeg har sett i det siste året. Og jeg ser på alle de kjente UA-camre. Både wildlife og landskap. Helt fantastisk og imponerende.
Wow, det varmer virkelig å høre! Tusen hjertelig takk!
A stunning piece of work Tobias. Thank you for taking us with you on this amazing journey and sharing your beautiful story telling and imagery 👏👏👏👏
Thank you so much for your kind words!
Great film. I was lucky enough to see many half-domesticated reindeers in Finland. I love them.
Thank you!
Nobody can follow your tracks, never seen before. Amazing nature and animals. Perfect spoken English an the rigth exciting music.
Thanks so much!
I always enjoy your videos, your appreciation of the wildlife and the care you show toward their welfare is obvious. The commitment, dedication and photography skills you show put you streets ahead of many youtubers. I was blown away with the image @ 8:25. I hope your friend recovered ?
Thank you so much! It was so cool when the big bull lined up with the horizon, casting up snow behind him that was backlit by the evening sun.
this channel deserves much more views keep up the good work man!
Thanks so much!
Fantastic ! I love your videos and photos, I watch a lot of wildlife photography videos and yours are at another level, Thank you for your efforts.
I am from Canada, I visited Norway in September, beautiful country, photographed muskox but was unable to photograph reindeer
Thank you so much, I really appreciate that! I have only photographed the reindeer on Dovre three times, since they are so incredibly shy there. The herd I photographed in this video are much less shy and therefore less exposed to disturbance by humans
Another masterpiece of a video! Great photography too! ❤
Thank you so much!!
Really amazing footage, must have been such an experience being so close to these animals in these conditions 🤩
Thanks so much! Indeed, it was truly unforgettable!
Wow, that took a lot of dedication and it certainly paid off!
Thank you so much!
Fantastisk film Tobias! Jag satt trollbunden under hela denna stund. Imponerande att du överhuvutaget orkar och klarar av att filma under dessa förhållanden. Tack för att du delar dina underbara bilder och strapatser på ett så intressant och spännande sätt😊

Thank you so much!
Hi Tobias. Awesome footage out in the cold. Really well done. greets Stefan
Thank you so much Stefan!
An amazing experience!
Totally!
This VLOG is truly a masterpiece in the way it showcases the beauty, brutality and vulnerability of the landscape and animals - filmed, as always, with great respect for Norwegian nature. You worry about the photographers in the winter storm, celebrate the scenes of the reindeer in the evening light, suffer with the (probably) sick female left behind. The repeated photo sequences are also wonderful and become incredibly powerful, especially where the renunciation of close-ups, rules of thirds or the golden ratio gives the dimensions of the snowy desert additional space. Thank you for your work!
Thank you so much for your kind words and amazing support 🙏
Flott Tobias. Du har virkelig godt grep om formidlng og filming. Knall stillbilder også!
Tusen hjertelig takk -- det varmer!

What an epic adventure! Beautifully captured on video and images! An absolute masterpiece! Those images are just insane. Don't think anyone will be able to top that with wild reindeer!

W video
Cheers!
Alltid lika trevligt att få ta del av dina mästerliga filmer och konstnärligt fint fångade bilder - Tack Tobias 😊😊
Tusen takk for varmende ord!
Beautiful! An epic adventure that few would dare make. You certainly achieved your goal of capturing images and videos that illustrate the hardy nature of reindeer, enabling them to survive in such harsh conditions. Not to mention your own stamina. The wind chill of 100 km winds in a cold environment would be challenging indeed. Well done!
Thank you so much! Indeed, it was among my wildest adventures!
Really stunning... youre voice is amazing bro!:- )
Thank you so much!
Wow!
Cheers!
Brilliant!
Thank you!
Thank you for this great vidéo. Stunning images avec great moments with such a beautiful animal !!!
Which periode of the year have you been there to have them with so much snow and still lot of them with antlers?
Thanks so much! This was at the end of November. I would have liked to be there a week or two earlier, but at that time, I was on a military excercise in Finland, so had to wait for my leave
Great work
Thanks!
Thank you so much for sharing this amazing video!! I have never seen before such recordings!! Another fantastic video and awesome photos, Tobias

Thank YOU for supporting me along the way!
Very artistic photos as usual Tobias! 🙏
Many thanks! Glad you like them!
So brave and so beautiful! Thank you!!
Thank you so much!
Lovely video and great photos! Nicely done.
Do you mind sharing about the preparing for the expedition? (what clothes, where did you camp) and stuff like that? Curious photographer here :)
Thank you so much, I really appreciate that. I do not really have too many secrets when it comes to the preparations. I just make sure I have enough food, fuel (for melting snow and boiling water) and warm clothes (four/five layers), as well as a powerbank, a GPS, good shoes for hiking long distances. If you have any concrete questions, I will be happy to give my reply :)
Beautiful
Thank you!
Che meraviglia ! Grazie.
Thanks!
Nydelig & inspirerende!
Tusen takk!
I hope your friend recovered from his nasty blisters?
ps, I learned a trick to prevent blisters by wearing my socks turned inside-out.
I think he was good in a few days afterwards. I haven't tried that! If I know there's a risk of blisters, I typically like to tape the exposed area
Where are the wolves and other predators to cull the caribou herds like we have in North America.
Good question, Eric! I’m kind of wondering the same… Noway has awful management of large predators, so the goverment keeps their populations at the brink of local extinction. So in this region, I believe there are no large predators - maybe the odd lynx or wolverine taking single individuals here and there. So all culling is done by hunters.
Hello there,
I have what might be a silly question. Is Steinbock a general name given to the seven different similar-looking types of mountain goats?
Haha, sorry, but I am not the person to ask about that!
@@TobiasGjerde Hey, I came across a radio interview you have done. I hardly recognized you without your winter boots on.
hi Tobias
Too bad the animals are distracted by your presence. that costs them a lot of energy, which they could have used better.
Hi, I’m glad to hear about your concern for the reindeer! We need more people like you!
When photographing wildlife, you always pose a risk of disturbing the animals, but the choices you make along the way determine the outcome. On this trip, I took my precautions to minimize disturbance. I do not know if you watched the video, but I never pressured them. And when the large herd I photographed decided to leave (they walked away, they did not run), I left them alone. Additionally, the herd I worked with (the Norefjell-Reinsjøfjell herd) is one of the most tolerant wild herds in all of Norway, as they regularly see people there. This sort of adventure would never be possible for example in Dovre or Rondane, as the reindeer there are much shyer and wilder.
So to conclude, I appreciate your concern, but I made calculated desicions to minimize any disturbance.
@@TobiasGjerde You could see from the behavior and reaction of the reindeer that they did not like your presence very much. maybe save up for a telephoto lens with a longer range, or else just stay away.
@@theflyingdutchman7127As Tobias stated first your concern is admirable. But, that said I really can't see any signs of disturbing the animals in any part of the video.
They seem to be doing all the natural signs of grazing, hierarchy work, no signs of wanting to flee just minding there on business.
So in this case your concern is quite miss leading.
@@bullenbjork If you look at how the reindeer reacted, you can see that she did not appreciate his presence. You have to be very careful if you don't register that.
One of the best Videos i've ever seen! congrats Tobi!🎉🫡
Thank you so much, Marc!!
