Exactly what I needed. Coming from a lifelong Canon user, this helped me out tremendously. No filler content. Straight to the point! Loved it! Thank you!
Man I found your channel when cine ei mode was introduced and your tutorials made the most sense to me. I just went through the whole video and tweaked a bit of settings in the camera. Mega useful stuff here! Keep it up
Same, that el cine mode video was fantastic. This one was great as well. While it's comforting to know I knew 90% of this, it was still an extremely good refresher and well made. Thanks Josh, just subbed
Dude. Just got my FX3. I'm familiar with the A7iii and A7RiV. Now, after watching this video, I feel so much more comfortable around the FX3. A really great primer, and higly recommended to anyone that got their hands on this great camera. Thanks a million for all the time and effort you put into this video. It really helped. New subscriber! Peace!
Josh, thank you so much for your wisdom, experience and generosity. After using an A7SIII for three years, I just switched to the FX3. Right out of the box, I realized I had some catching up to do. You convinced me that it was time to adopt CineEI. Your reconfiguration of some of the buttons is brilliant. You have saved me so much trial and error - mostly error. Again, thank you for all you do to share your knowledge and experience.
This video is so so good. I just got into the fx3 and watched a few other basic camera run downs and this one by far is the best. The way you break everything down was so helpful. Thanks a ton!
thanks for this! Just snagged this camera for making my short form content and these settings (and the Phantom LUT recommendation) are really coming in clutch
Man, you are awesome. I can't believe I am learning this for free. Thank you for making our life easy and keep up the great work. It inspires us to give back to the other creators as well. Cheers
Really appreciate the time and effort you put into this, watched the whole thing all the way through! Great since I also have the FX3 w/ 16-35mm GM lens, your explanations of Cine EI really helped. I knew I wanted to stick to the base ISO's but didn't have my camera setup as efficiently as you... I do now!! Looking forward to shooting more video.
Thanks to you I finally understand how to expose the right way for S-Log outdoors in run & gun situations along with how to color correct better. The exposure meter had never made any sense to me, and has always messed up the quality of my videos, until now. You explained to manually expose, instead of letting the camera do the guessing. Also the color correction part of your video makes more sense to me now than any other videos I have seen out there on UA-cam. One million thanks again and can’t wait to start filming soon, the right way. You gained a Subscriber!
This is the missing user manual! It’s a shame Sony did not even bother to make a viable one in the first place, but you did sooo much better than they would ever do. Sony needs to award you a medal a few free FX-3’s!
Just finished watching from start to finish. This was like a whole masterclass on this single camera. I learned so much from you so thank you for sharing this valuable information that I would have otherwise had to figure out myself.
Josh, I just want to say thank you so much for creating this advanced FX3 guide! I watched throught the entire video and you really made it enjoyable and also easy to understand and follow in setting up the camera. thank you for all the time you took to create this for us videographers. You're awesome! I also left a sub :) Keep up the great work!! 30K soon
Excellent content Josh. Just updated my FX3 this morning after contacting Sony. I have the new Macbook M1 and the new software was not cooperating. We switched to an older Intel Mac and I was able to do the upgrade. I just watched this entire video and I think you have done all of the viewers a big favour so thanks again. Keep up your great content. Cheers from the West Coast.
Thank you so much! Yeah sometimes updating Sony cameras with Macs can be tricky. It is frustrating. I was surprised that I couldn't do these latest firmware updates with the SD card since the camera has that option in it.
Excellent work Josh! Subbed! One question, as far as recording audio... With the added XLR handle. Did you find the in camera pre-amp worked better at a specific level? I noticed your Record Level was at 19 in the video. Thanks!
Looks like everyone beat me to it saying something positive. My new fx3 is pretty much all set to go thanks to this video. I was totally confused and questioning my choice in purchasing this. Now I get it. I’ll probably use your ideas to customize my a74.
For a typical setup where you have a mount mic XLR into channel 2 for ambient, and you have 1 Rode Go, which you want to use as channel one for interviews. Normally, you want the main audio as channel 1, ambient as channel 2. In this case, you'd then flip the INT to 'INT3' so it goes into Ch1/Ch2, correct? But if you only have 1 mic going into the 3.5mm on the handle, will that automatically split it into 2? What if I just need that as channel 1, and want my XLR mount mic as Channel 2, as I've plugged that into channel 2 XLR. Does this work OR does switching the INT setting to INT3 automatically force the XLRs to switch to 3/4 instead of 1/2?
Thank you Thank you! I've wanted to purchase a camera for more run and gun documentary style productions. I've used sony professional camcorders and some panasonic cameras. But I love the idea of using the fx3 with a zoom lens. These videos are great.
Thank you so much, Josh!!! I just picked up the FX 3 on Monday and a lot of the content on YT is before the 3.00 firmware update. I'm so glad I found your tutorial!! I found this so helpful!!
You're welcome. I know some people love it, but I just don't find myself using it. I always have to grade it a bit afterwards so I'd rather shoot in Slog3 and get more dynamic range.
This is a truly excellent debrief on the settings, especially for someone coming from an A7SIII. However still a couple of major oversights on the part of Sony. When will Sony give us shutter degrees on their Cine cameras? Pretty antiquated that we have to change shutter speed when we change the framerate. Just give us a 180 deg shutter option Sony. And why can't they implement 25P in H265 recordings? Unless I switch to NTSC the lowest frame rate I can access in the HS codec is 50P.
Excellent video. Really helped this newbie get familiar with the settings and start shooting. watched it all and took tons of notes and its on my save list so that I can reference. Thank you so much for putting this together. Subbed for sure.
Thanks alot for this help full video! I noticed that my sony fx3 with ( firmware Ver.3.00 ) only has the ( XAVC HS 4k 119.88p, 59.9p4, 23.98p ) ( XAVC S 4k 119.88p, 59.94p, 29.97p, 23.98p ) ( XAVC S-I 4k 59.94p, 29.97p, 23.98p ) and (XAVC S-I DCI 4k 24p, 23.98p, 29.97p, 59.94p) option and not a clean 120p, 60p like at 1:13:20 in your video. I just cant seem to get those settings. Was this done on the older firmware? and did sony remove that ability? I am also using a TOUGH Sony CFexpress Type A 160GB card.
You're welcome! Other than the true 24p, when you see it say 30p it really is 29.97p, 24p is 23.98p, etc. You should see this in the metadata of your video file or when you bring it into your editing software.
I rarely comment on videos, but this was too good not to. I have an FX3 on the way and I learned a ton from you here. Thank you for sharing your deep knowledge in such an approachable/non-intimidating way!
Josh, I want to say thank you very much, I am a cinematographer and I am using Venice, Venice 2 , Alexa or so but When I need to use FX3 as a side cam and didn't know anything about it and I didn't have time to spend with FX3 by luckily I found your this video and it helps me in quick period of time. You covered every thing with this video. Again I appreciate it for this work. 🙏🙏
Hey Josh! Here's my take on SD-cards: The problem with the XAVC S-I codec is, that the file sizes become huge (especially with the FX30). So as a result most of us will stick with XAVC S, or XAVC HS codecs and for those a V60 will do all the frame rates up to 4k/120fps. So you don't even need a V90. And I would go even further: For most of the time you won't do 120fps and hence even a V30 card would do, while allowing you to do at least 4K60. So that's what I suggest: Use a 256GB V30 in slot #1 and a 256GB V60 card in slot #2 and you're covered for everything except XAVC S-I recordings (which due to the big file sizes, you'd probably won't use anyway). The Price difference for this setup in comparison to your 160Gb CF-Express type A and a 256GB V90 card is a whopping 500€ (in the EU, August 23)! Thanks for the video and see you soon! Ferdinand
You're welcome. Glad you have your system sorted out. I just started investing in V90 cards so I could future proof myself a bit and also can use them in any camera that I get.
the video realy help me to understand all the things i just asked you yesterday, thanks! Just one thing, why i only have Base ISO 800 and ISO 2500 i can see you have 800+12800
One of the things I love about Sony is how customizable everything is. Most of the customizations you landed on sound terrible to me, but that's fine because it works for you, haha. I'm glad we can choose how to set up our own gear in a way that works best for us instead of being told what the universal one best way is and needing to find workarounds for all the stuff we won't use.
AT 1:39:10 in the time-lapse, you should have maintained the 180º shutter rule. At 1 fps set your SS to 0.5 seconds. Your motion blur will look perfect. Right now your shutter is 100x too fast and the the branch shadows really show this.
Thank you very much for your precise explanations. I have a question, following you setup, when i XAVC HS 4k and 100M 4:2:2 10 bit. I can only record in 50p (or 100p). How it comes you could set your frame rate in 23,98? best salutations, sandra
What an awesome video!! Thank you. I recently started using Sony Fx3... BEST CAMERA that I have used. I really appreciate the time you put into this instructional video.
I've set up and been shooting my FX3 like you've demonstrated in this video and I like it. But, Do you happen to have an editing workflow with the Cine EI footage? I don't use a rec709 lut, I've been starting with a consistent S-curve and adjusting the Basic controls, and generally I've notice I've been maxing the contrast, most times crushing the blacks, raising the whites and highlights, and the shadows depending go either way. But pretty aggresive adjustments. Does anyone else have a certain workflow they use?
Great breakdown! Just got mine last night and set it up your way. I almost set mine to Cine-L but then I was like he's right about the ISO capability so might as well fix it through aperture, ND's or adding/removing light on set
What I'm trying to understand, is : when shooting outdoors, with clouds coming and going, does lowering the EI setting will help avoid noisy shadows when the cloud comes and I'm still exposed for the sunny parts?
Great video 👍🏻 really helped me understand my new FX3. I am into car video. I see car videos on instagram so crisp and high quality. I have FX3 and 16-35 GM II could you recommend some setting to achieve that look?
Oh man, this is so helpful. I've been struggling to figure out all these settings on the FX3 and I feel so much more comfortable now. I plan on coming back to this video whenever I forget something or want to see how something works. It's like my bible for 90% of everything there is to know about this camera. One thing I'm struggling with are the picture profiles. With the settings shown in this video, they can't even be chosen. I'm left wondering what they're even for and how they can be useful to me. There's also so many networking and connection options that I am completely lost as to where to start. I'll certainly check your stuff first for that and anything else I need to know. Thank you!
Great work as always! This lens is sooo close for the unicorn of len's to take backpacking. Fast enough for Astro photography, but the missing 10mm at the long end. Can't wait for your review of the 24-50 f2.8
Great video Josh …Jason Hermann sent me over to you from the comments… been going round the bend trying to figure out sLog 3 and thanks to watching your fantastic break down of the FX3 all day I think I have a greater understanding of the camera and it’s capabilities … thank you so much fella … all the best to ya 💪💪👊
Hello, if I connect an XLR cable to IN1 and a Minijack to IN3, I am unable to monitor both simultaneously. Is it possible to listen to all signals together? The only way to control and adjust this seems to be by changing the INPUT SELECT to listen to each channel individually. Additionally, the audio levels control is disabled when using the XLR adapter. Is there any method to display larger audio bars instead of the small ones in the left corner? By the way, excellent video and content!
as always, thx josh. is there a way to check, in camera (fx3), the focal length of your lens. i have sony fe 4/24-105 g oss but not all of the focal lengths are labeled on the lens (e.g. there a gap between the markings 70 & 105. i want to consistently shot at 85 but it’s not marked on the lens so i’m always “eyeballing” it. if not, any tip/trick for dialing in a focal length when it’s not demarcated on the lens body? hope that makes sense.
Exactly what I needed. Coming from a lifelong Canon user, this helped me out tremendously. No filler content. Straight to the point! Loved it! Thank you!

AT 1:39:10 in the time-lapse, you should have maintained the 180º shutter rule. At 1 fps set your SS to 0.5 seconds. Your motion blur will look perfect. Right now your shutter is 100x too fast and the the branch shadows really show this.
Thank you for an excellent explanation

Thank you very much for your precise explanations. I have a question, following you setup, when i XAVC HS 4k and 100M 4:2:2 10 bit. I can only record in 50p (or 100p). How it comes you could set your frame rate in 23,98? best salutations, sandra
You're welcome. You are in PAL mode and need to change it to NTSC to get 24, 30, 60, etc FPS.
Just got my FX3 and was feeling overwhelmed - this tutorial helped so much! Thank you for getting in depth, and to-the-point!
That's great to hear. Thanks for watching!
Great video, thank you very much!

apparently in XAVC-HS 50mb and 100mb are indistinguishable even when peeping. I always use 50m now and it's awesome for file sizes.
What an awesome video!! Thank you. I recently started using Sony Fx3... BEST CAMERA that I have used. I really appreciate the time you put into this instructional video.
You are very welcome. Glad it was helpful for you. Thanks for watching!

Very nice job. Thank you!

Great breakdown! Just got mine last night and set it up your way. I almost set mine to Cine-L but then I was like he's right about the ISO capability so might as well fix it through aperture, ND's or adding/removing light on set
Nice! Glad the video was helpful for you. Thanks for watching!
When do you think Sony A7S4 is coming out?
What I'm trying to understand, is : when shooting outdoors, with clouds coming and going, does lowering the EI setting will help avoid noisy shadows when the cloud comes and I'm still exposed for the sunny parts?
In most situations I would recommend leaving the EI at the base. Here is a full explanation: ua-cam.com/video/oAM1RRcGuss/v-deo.html
I love how comprehensive your videos are, thank you
You are very welcome. Thanks for watching!
found this video to be insanely helpful after getting my fx3, thank you so much for putting it all together 🙏
You are very welcome. Thanks for watching!
Great video 👍🏻 really helped me understand my new FX3. I am into car video. I see car videos on instagram so crisp and high quality. I have FX3 and 16-35 GM II could you recommend some setting to achieve that look?
Great video. Thank you.
You're welcome. Thanks for watching!
Thank you!
What a video! This was a fantastic guide to learn the ins and outs of the FX3! Thank you for this free and helpful advice. God bless you!
You are very welcome. Thanks for watching!
Thanks! That is awesome of Jay. He's a good friend of mine. Glad this video was helpful for you.
By the way, excellent video and content!
wow excellent video Thanks
You're welcome. Thanks for watching!
as always, thx josh. is there a way to check, in camera (fx3), the focal length of your lens. i have sony fe 4/24-105 g oss but not all of the focal lengths are labeled on the lens (e.g. there a gap between the markings 70 & 105. i want to consistently shot at 85 but it’s not marked on the lens so i’m always “eyeballing” it. if not, any tip/trick for dialing in a focal length when it’s not demarcated on the lens body? hope that makes sense.
