Finally someone on UA-cam who has a great tutorial
Thank you for the kind words. Glad you found this useful.
Josh, as a new content creator, new FX 30 owner, interested in S-LOG 3, but equally intimidated shooter, AND a final cut user - I can't possibly thank you enough! This might very well be the most valuable piece of educational content specific to my needs I've EVER seen. Trust me, I've watched countless hours in the pursuit! Greater still, you provide such in-depth information for both in door/controlled and outdoor variances in shooting. As I'm sure you're aware, a lack of confidence in using gear can stifle creativity. Your video has given me the knowledge and confidence to start creating, rather than the perpetual state of consuming. Keep up the great work! 🤘🏻
Thank you for such a great comment. I am so glad to hear that this video was helpful for you. Slog 3 shouldn't be scary, it is actually pretty simple and can get you such great images. Good luck with the shooting/grading and thanks for watching!
I agree ☝🏽.
I agree
Very well explained with killer examples. One of the best on this topic on UA-cam.
굉장히 맘에드는 강의 입니다 고마워요
Wow the way you showed how to correct LOG to be useable was really cool
XLNT: Never knew why to use zebras for indoor vs histogram for natural outdoor before. Very specific. Thank you 🙂
You'e welcome. Thanks for watching!
Josh, another outstanding edit. Thank you for your time and effort. It's appreciated!

Nice job Josh, great pace, no fluffy excess info - you do a great job of staying on point and I'm looking forward to more.
Thank you for the kind words and for watching!
Thanks Josh, that was really simple, easy to follow and helpful.
You're welcome. Glad it was helpful for you. Thanks for watching!
I just watched this and you explained everything very well! I watched many videos and they didnt explain as good as you. Thank you so much!
You are very welcome. Glad this was helpful for you. Thanks for watching!
Very useful info and great content. I like how simple and clear you explain things not boring experience users and new ones as well.
I'm glad to hear the video was helpful for you. Thanks for watching!

You're welcome! Thank you for the kind words and for watching!
Great Video Josh!
Thank you for this informative video! Perfect!
I have been looking for videos on youtube that provide quality content, this is the best one I have come across! Thank you!
Thank you for the kind words!
Josh, this was great. Thank you. You managed to demystify the whole SLOG shooting and color correction/grading process in a short and engaging piece. I've watched a lot of videos on this topic and am slowly beginning to get it, but you brought it home. I hope. Haha. Again, thanks.
You are very welcome. I'm glad this video was helpful for you. Thanks for watching!
Thank you for taking the time to make and share such a useful tutorial. I especially appreciate your guidance not to make every shot look the same in terms of exposure. I learned this the hard way with photo editing. The world is beautiful because of its variability--embracing that imperfection is part of the joy of post-production.
You are very welcome. Thanks for watching!
Thank you so much, I wish we had more people like you explaining
You are very welcome. Thanks for watching!
Thank you for taking the time to explain these important topics in such a concise and useful manner. After upgrading to the zv-e1, I wanted to take advantage of SLOG and you really made things clear. I appreciate it, I’ll be keeping an eye on your future videos!
You are very welcome. Glad the video was helpful for you. Thanks for watching!
Thank you for sharing your knowledge and skills. Very helpful. I'm grateful for you making this. Thanks.
You are very welcome. Thanks for watching!
refreshed what I used to do...great job, thx
Thanks Josh! Just got my FX30 and this was ridiculously helpful! Can’t wait to see what this baby can do!
You are very welcome. Glad the video was helpful and thanks for watching!
I’ve watched hundreds of hours of videos and I love your style. The demonstration and everything is put together so well you’re a great teacher thanks so much
You're welcome. Thank you for the kind words!
OMG!!!! You make it look sooooo easy!
This was amazing! Perfectly explained for a rookie like me, thank you! Subscribed for sure!
You are welcome. Glad the video was helpful for you. Thanks for watching and for the support!
My guy, you killed this video. Thank you. If you want to know how to nail exposure, watch this whole video.
You are very welcome. Thanks for watching!
Super helpful! I find shooting with the LUT on (loaded by me) in the FX3 allows me to nail my exposure every time. Then in post, I just apply the LUT and I’m essentially done. Like you said, there are a million different ways to do it, just have to find the right one for your workflow.
Wow, this is seriously an education. I have already watched this video twice, taken notes, and worked through each step to get the best footage I've ever created. Thank you so much for putting time into this. I FINALLY feel like I trust myself to produce videos with S-Log.
By the way, I would love to see your version of this for dealing with audio.
That is awesome! So glad to hear this was helpful for you. Unfortunately I don't have the skills with audio to make something like this for audio.
Very..very good info here and exactly what I need for a job today, interview inside and b-roll outside. Thanks!
Awesome! Thanks for watching!
My feelings of gratitude clearly aren't occupying this comment section alone. You are an awesome teacher. As someone who recently graduated with a digital media degree and instantly became the sole videographer for a company, I'm pretty overwhelmed at the ridiculous amount of minute detail that goes into the craft. I'm super meticulous and don't like leaving stones unturned. Thanks so much for your content. It's incredibly useful. I just got an FX30 and have bee super stressed about learning all of the functions. This content is Golden :)
Thank you so much for the kind words. If you haven't seen this video yet, this is a full user guide for the FX3 (very similar to the FX30): ua-cam.com/video/fBNOwUaOE84/v-deo.html
You are a GREAT teacher!!! :) Thank you.
Thank you for the kind words and for watching the video!
What a great video! You've show concepts in practice in a very intuitive way. Indeed you're correcting/grading. I prefer to use a CST to a wide gamut intermediate color space and gama curve that will take care of the color correction in a mathematically sound way. Then I'll take care of the grading if needed.
Thanks! I wish FCPX had CST.
Thank you. So many helpful tips. Even after this long time I have the camera now.
You're welcome. Thanks for watching!
Awesome video, thank you!
I appreciate the Star Wars scene transition.
Straight to the point bro! Found your tutorial best one for slog 3 understanding. Photographer here shifting to cinema so there is a lot to catch up
Glad the video was helpful for you. Thanks for watching!
Thank you for this super helpful and super clear explanation on slog3, actually im also starting to switch from PP11 to slog3 and this is a huge help for me, please dont stop sending knowledge to others i hope your channel grows more coz it deserves it, thank
You are very welcome. Thanks for watching!
Thank you for keeping this simple. I've been a professional photographer for a very long time but am new to video. I've watched quite a bit of color grading training and it has been pretty overwhelming. This is the first time I've seen it applied in a quick and simple manner. Thanks again.
You are very welcome. Glad the video was helpful for you and thanks for watching!
After watching 100s of videos I think my confusion was gone... Thanks
I will apply your techniques tomorrow and I face any problem I will ask you 😊
Very helpful for photographers like me who are slowly moving into adding video into their arsenal, thanks!
You're welcome. Glad to hear it was helpful for you. Thanks for watching!
Very true
Really like your teaching style
Thank you so much!
Thanks so much! It finally made sense to me!
You're welcome. That's awesome! Thanks for watching!
super educational. Thanks again for this video!
You're welcome!
A lot of gems in this video 🔥📸🔥
Glad you found it helpful. Thanks for watching!
Perfectly explained!
I've watched heaps of other videos regarding proper exposure in SLOG3. Most explanations circulated around the exposure multimeter and zebras around 94. My highlights were blown out most of the times...this was driving me crazy!
Your explanations for in and outside made the most sense for me. I don't own an nd filter (yet), but my results were consistent. Had to change the ISO though.
Thanks a lot 💪!
You're welcome. Thanks for watching!
Fab tutorial, well explained. Liked and subbed!
Glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks for the support and for watching!
Massively helpful, thanks so much!
You're welcome. Thanks for watching!
This was awesome! Thank you Josh!
You’re welcome. Thanks for watching!
It's just so much easier to get the proper exposure with the histogram. I just did some test shooting with it and I nailed all of my shots 100%. Can't believe I've been using the exposure meter for this many years. Thanks!
You're welcome. I'm glad to to hear that this was helpful for you. Thanks for watching!
Fantastic video bro…I’ve just subscribed
Thank you so much!
Thank you - very thorough Josh
You're welcome. Thanks for watching!
I’m a content creator who uses Final Cut Pro. I just got a FX30 and have found your videos super helpful through this learning curve. Thank you.
Rachel, LDK
You're welcome. I'm glad to hear that my videos have been helpful. Thanks for watching!
Very helpful. I’m finally going to give this a shot. Base iSO on A7S3 for slog3 is 640. That was the only thing diff from the video. I’ll check my A74 next, which per this video showed 800. Thanks for this info! Subbed
Just what I needed! Thank you
You're welcome. Thanks for watching!
You make this look so easy bro dammmmm good 👍🏾 job
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the video!
FANTASTIC!!!
Glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks for watching!
Best information on UA-cam
I appreciate that! Thanks for checking out the video!
Zebras are your friends!
I've been shooting video for over 20 years.
Most of the time, I don't have time to use a grey card or a white card. I use the zebras based on skin tones. If I'm shooting log with the 709 LUT, I'll set them for 70, or actually 68 or 65 (use the custom settings). If I'm using dynamic range assist or just looking at LOG, I'll set them for 50 because the zebras correlate to the LOG, not the DRA LUT. If I'm shooting S-Cinetone, on my FX9, I've been setting then for ~62.
This lets you meeter off of skin, or concrete, or light colored tree trunks, or all kinds of things that are in that approximate luminance range.
Caucasian or asian faces I let the zebras cover about 30% of a face. For darker skin tones I might do ~15 % or just the highlights. Darker skin tones can be 10+ IRE less than lighter ones. If you expose them at 70, you can actually over expose them.
Kofi Yeboah did an excellent video called 4 Easy Exposure Tips to Perfect Dark Skin Tones with S-Log 3 which I highly recommend.
please Brian explaine me. I set 41 Zebra and did everything like Josh did but with all these settings Zebra is everywhere in my screen(( I think that 41 of Zebra is too much for S-Gamut3.Cine/S-Log3
Lovely video!
Thank you!
Great video! Finally was able to purchase an FX3, after dealing with Canon R6 and R5 overheating........
Love the video! Keep it up.
THNX. Leaning every time!
You're welcome. Thanks for watching!
thank you ! great video
You're welcome. Thanks for watching!
@@Josh_Sattin I do have one question if you mind. If you are shooting outdoors and there are changes in light, say a cloud and the scene gets dark. Do you recommend just keeping it manual and locked, and just fix it in post? Or is it better to use flexible ISO?
Excellent. New subscriber. Thanks very much.
You're welcome. Thanks for the support!
Hi Josh, after going over this extremely carefully and getting my indoor and daytime outdoor workflows up to speed, I have also been experimenting with outdoor night video. What is your exposure strategy for outdoor nighttime video in terms of zebras, ISOs, grey card, etc.? (I assume you'd still use S-log3?) And how do you then color the footage in Final Cut? Thank you so much!
more than Udemy lessons... Thankyou!
Nice video. I like this histogram method and will definetly give it a try. I have been playing with skin tone zebras for run and gun stuff but it does make it harder to see what is on the screen so if one can get used to exposing well with the histogram that sounds ideal. For grading a simple color space transfrom in da vinci seems more accurate... im also quite new to da vinci but i 100% recommend switching.
It does seem a little annoying that log seems to perhaps more effected by iso and ND filters seem more necessary, especially as they can effect quality and colour which is the purpose of using Log in the first place but I guess we can't have everything.
hallo from Greece! very helpful!!
Nice! Thanks for watching!
Great video man!
Thanks! I'm glad you liked it!
Great Content!!!!
Thanks!
Fantastic!
Thanks!
Great video brother!
Thanks!
Very helpful as usual Josh. I'm really enjoying all of these last episodes. Thanks.
You're welcome. Thanks for watching!
Thankfully, a proper guide on how to expose properly Slog3. Many youtubers are giving advise to overexpose your footage 1 stop higher by raising the ISO, without realizing that its actually not advisable to raise ISO (unless the camera has dual native ISO and you are using the 2nd native ISO) to overexpose as the higher you raise the ISO, the lower the dynamic range will become and will also raise up the noise floor. As for the grading part, if you are not using Davinci Resolve for its color management (the most accurate way to transform your footage), its better to use Sony's official Slog3 to REC 709 LUT because it will accurately transform your footage to how you really shot it. The problem with manually transforming it is that you really are just guessing on how the scene really looked like when you shot it vs using the official LUT wherein it has the right equation on properly transforming your footage to Rec 709 with the proper middle grey as the basis. Put it at the end of your workflow , basically as an Output Device Transform or ODT then color correct or grade upstream. Saves so much time vs manually mapping out Slog3 to Rec709
Thank you so much for this. I’m still learns log3 and s cinetone i was told for a log 3 set my zebras to 94 plus. On my Sony a7iv. I also don’t have any luts.
You're welcome. Thanks for watching!
Pretty dang useful. I hope this one gets some traction.
Thanks! I'm glad to hear this was useful for you!
Fantastic
Thanks!
Thanks for the helpful video. I know you said to ignore the M.M. value (manual mode), however, why can't you use this in lieu of the histogram? I've ready a good ETTR value is around 1.3 which I think your value was close to this after you made your adjustments.
i understand! thank you !!
You're welcome. Thanks for watching!
god bless you, man
thankyou so much!
You're welcome. Thanks for watching!
This is the most informative channel that I’ve come across in a very long time! Thanks dude!
You're welcome and thank you for the kind words!
Thank you very much for watching the video. I have a question. Is there anything I should check if I assume that the color space is set to HDR or PQ and edit it instead of rec. 709? I think it comes out much brighter when editing it with the color space of rec. 709
thank you
You're welcome. Thanks for watching!
Fantastic video, but what if I dont have the grey card always with me? How much percent should be the zebra be in that case?
Josh I am learning a lot of new things wished you lived in Henderson ,NV I’ve would pay you to take private lessons . Really I am loving all your videos thx
Glad the videos have been helpful for you. I do offer coaching calls if you are interested: superpeer.com/joshsattin
beautiful video really nice, could you give us your export settings? I film with the SonyFx3 slog3cine and the new 4k dci but when I export in 1080 after a slight colorgrading the quality is horrible with pixels in the black thanks for your answer
I’ve avoided slog due to the grading etc. What you’ve shown above is that basically what the conversion lut does?
Will try what you said exposing with the histogram rather than the exposure reading ☺️
Hi, i just found your channel and it's great. One thing that I wanted to ask... so, basically if you make the (loose) comparison to analogue fotography, in log you have two isos, and shooting in ei is similar to push-pull process with film?
Very nice!
Thanks Geoff!
thank youuuuuu!!!!!
You're welcome. Thanks for watching!
Great video, it is very useful. Thx Josh… Can you try with lut ? Thx
You're welcome. I generally don't use LUTs. I'm just sharing my process.
Josh. I’m happily shooting Log, SLOG-3 on my A7RV. IS there any way to bake in the characteristics of the LOG onto my clips, instead of needing to add the LOG in-post? I’m using Resolve but the characteristics of a specific LUT would be added while I shoot (NOT in post). This option IS available when I shoot LOG on iPhone 15 using the Black Magic camera app, but can’t find on the 7RV.
41% on middle grey is the rec709 value but I think for slog3 it's better to over expose it one or two stops (without clipping highlights) and bring it down to 41ire after grading
Very useful tutorial! Do you recommend these same techniques on a 8bit camera like ZV-E10? Some recommends to pump up in-camera saturation in PP8 to the max to avoid banding issues.
You can use these in 8 bit Sonys. Use Slog2 and 32%.
