Don't know what this wood is but it started as a tangled mess. Gave me some troubles along the way but that's the fun of it! Wait till you see what it became. Finished in shellac.

How to turn a petrified squirrel into a usable bowl in one easy lesson. Good work Phil.
LOL! 😊
At the 'shoe' angle, I see a person reclining. Learnings from today: 1) Tuffy has a wicked sense of humor; and 2) Phil will (and can) turn just about anything.
Haha, all so true, Michael! At least, I'll try! 😊
Think it is a dieters soup bowl! That Tuffy likes to push you to the edge! Thanks Tuffy. It's beautiful.
Morning jeffrosen8237... Ha Jeff, yes what a fun game it is trying to find solid but unusual pieces for Phil. So far Phil has turned all I have sent (well almost all, except for that contaminated Buckeye ugh!!!) ... TM
😊
So cool, So many animals in this piece, I could turn it over and over in my hands for hours and just get lost in identifying new creatures. So so cool. Thanks Phil
Thank you, Richard! 😊
Tuffy sure does like to send you a challenge. Greetings from Scotland. Totally cool! 👠
Haha, thanks, Al! 😊
I think that turned out great! You whispered and it heard you! Thanks Phil!
😊
😊
A non traditional piece. How wonderful!
😊
Sometimes they fly the friendly sky’s, it happens more than people think. Good recovery Phil.👍👍👍👍🙏
Thanks, Mark! 😊
Hmmm, it's kind of turtle shaped if a turtle was very flexible and could lay down in a hammock! Mostly I see a beautifully finished piece of artistic wood that I'd want mounted on my wall. Whenever I watch a wood turning video and it goes to slo- mo, I just know disaster is a out to strike. I'm so glad neither you nor it got damaged! Thanks for the fun, Phil 😊
Thank you very much, Gwynn! 😊
Good evening, Phil.
Everything starts with a plan and your planning yielded an amazing piece. I am convinced if Tuffy sent you 3 popsicle sticks and a few barks from a dog, you would be successful in turning a fantastic piece. Thanks for the video.
Hahaha, you made me laugh out loud, Ray, thanks! 😊
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop Laughter is good.
HA... Now Ray you have me thinking.... AH wonder if I should include the rubber bands with those popsicle sticks so Phil could make a flying sculpture??? TM
Phil, Every one of your turnings are amazing. All I can say is WOW every time you do another.
Thank you so much! 😊
Love it!! Thanks, Phil. I always look forward to Thursday for another Philism!! Never disappointed!!
Thank you, Peter! 😊
Phil, In Alabama, that's lawn fire wood. But you know it's "art wood". Great looking too!
Thanks, John! 😀
I just agree with all the previous comments, Phil. There's nothing more to add. Just Brilliant workmanship.
😊
Hi Phil...
Another demonstration of how to make the impossible.. possible...
Well done...
Take care my friend...All the best.....Andy
Haha, thanks a lot, my friend! 😊
It almost looked like a parent and child from the right angle before you started working on it lol
😊
That shoe looks awfully uncomfortable but as a sleigh now... I can see Santa urging on his reindeer towing his sacks on another section behind...
Today its too humid, grey, wet and quite miserable over here so I suppose I'm dreaming the summer away! Not really, we're very grateful not to be suffering the heat for long spells so far this year.
Thats a such lovely little piece Phil, thanks to that ingenious device and your talent it really gave the escalonia root a second life. Its normally a hardy shrub, we have them over here, the bees love their little round pink flowers. Something must have changed dramatically in their environment to kill them off if there was no noxious substances sprayed on them. Or...maybe twenty-five years is a good innings for them, could just be that if they're left in the wild...anyway, thanks Tuffy for putting it into the hands of your talented friend!
They do polish up well in your hands Phil, but not too shiny, of course! 👍👏😄🇬🇧
Thank you, Jude, for another great comment! 😊
Only you can make a purse out of a pigs ear Phil. It's beautiful.
😊
Tuffy is such a card.
LOL! 😊
AnnaAnna-uc2ff ... HA Anna ... Ace of Spades Anna, ha.... TM
Another victory cobber though I'm pretty sure Tuffy was giggling in the background again. Cheers and stay well.
I'm sure he was, Deno! 😊
Cool...I thought it looked like a Hammerhead Shark in a lounge chair! Must be that glass of wine talking. Thanks for an imaginative turn.
Haha, yup, sounds like the wine to me! 😊
I used to know a girl who said " if you're not living on the edge...your taking up too much room!" I think you fit that category Phil. Lol
Haha, I like it! 😊

Gorgeous piece Phil. I have to stop scratching my head in the beginning, you always make it beautiful.
Thanks for sharing.
I'm scratching my head right along with you, Carl! 😊
For whatever reason Phil, it reminds me of a lizard like a gecko! I know it doesn’t really look like one, that’s just what came to mind 🦎😊. You’ve sure been posing problems for yourself and then thankfully solving them!! Nice work.
Cheers, Rick
Workin' on another problem piece now, Rick! 😊
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop looking forward to watching you get through it!!
Always amazed at how you can take a sows ear and turn it into a silk purse.
Thank you, Monte! 😊
Wow am I wore out. Just watching you turn that I could almost feel every cut. But man oh man did that come out cool looking.
Just an amazing job of turning it Phil. It looks a bit like the Camelia I have and I think you turned a piece of it. Very hard wood.
I love the worm screw setup that Tuffy made for you. Worked like a charm
And that drill press clamp is the cat's meow. Sure did the trick. I have one of those that a good friend of mine gave me.
And it is mounted on a drill press just like yours. And I bought mine new from Sears about 50 years ago as well. Mine came with the tilting table that you hook up on the back side.
That is what makes it so hard to lift up and down. Good ole Harbor Freight trailer jack has solved that issue. I am getting so lazy I might put a motor on the jack LOL.
A top of the line turning my friend,
Gary
Oh, man, I never got that tilting table! I'll bet that DOES add a lot weight! Maybe one of those harbor freight electric cranes would do the trick? I'll have to look into that! Thanks, buddy! 😊
Whew....you did it! Had me nervous. It sure turned out beautiful. Tuffy finds the neatest woods.
He sure does! 😊
Thought for sure it was going to explode, but once again you did it. Beautiful work of art Phil 👍.
Thank you! Cheers! 😊
Fog wood or fog hedge. Your never cease to amaze me. Based on the title of this video I was expecting to see pieces flying everywhere. I am going have to see if I can fabricate Tuffy’s jig. It would be just for me not to mass produce. That piece looks like Cinderella’s daily work shoe. Thanks Phil see you next time Dan
Cool, good luck with it, Dan! 😊
I see someone relaxing...maybe in a hammock. Great Job!
Yes, I can see that, too. Thank you! 😊
When you turned it over to remove that dovetail on the recess, I thought "he is going to keep fixing it until it's really broke!" But you didn't, and I love the way it turned out. It is a perfect Keys bowl.
Haha, cool, thank you! 😊
It turned out to be a cute little bowl/dish! I think you could put one of those round/globe shaped candles in it or a round, polished marble ornament. Thanks Phil!❤
😊
Yes! It's a holder for something mystical and round - a palantir, or seer's stone, from Lord of the Rings!
Interesting and worrying for your knuckles in this one.
Look initially like an Ivy root stump, but sound way to hard for Ivy.
Tuffy certainly brings you challenges 😂😂😂
He certainly does, Sacha! 😊
That is beautiful Phil. Again not something I would have attempted but as usual you see things that most don’t. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you, Charles! 😊
WOW! A beautiful piece, Phil! Looked like calling it a challenge is an understatement! Thank you Phil!
Thank you, Mike! 😊
That is a great bit of turning, you worked out how to mount it and then remount it and I think you are right about removing the recess, it is usually great. Well done Phil.
All the best to you.
Regards Jim
Thanks, Jim! 😊
That turned out fantastic. Phil you inspire me to push the limits
😊
Wow , you have nerves of steel. Every time I see the action going to slow motion, my muscles in my neck tighten up..... looks beautiful, nice work !
At least I didn't use the Jaws music! 😊
Thank you for the lesson on how to use my imagination to visulize what is possible with a piece of wood that most would just throw away. A lovely bowl.
Glad it was helpful! Thank you, Ross! 😊
I thought it was a pretty piece of wood/root ball before you did anything to it. But of course you made it more Beautiful ❤ Tuffy is a very good friend!!
😊
you are a problem's solver. With you we perceive the difficulty of a task, and how to achieve a final results, ...facing each step with determination.
You never give up: Is a soling teaching.
Thank you.
Sorry for my English; I keep learning but at 80 years old is more what I forget that what I'm learning.
Thank you so much, Robert! I'm 75 and cannot imagine learning another language at my age. Good for you, keep at it! 😊
Phil you just gotta love that FOG wood. 😊 happy turning my friend. I try to turn at least one of something that my wife and I find once a year while out on our adventures. ❤. Take care and thanks for the safety tips as always.
Cool idea, Edward! 😊
Phil. When you initially showed us that piece of wood I said to myself there's no way he can make a bowl out of this but as always you make me eat my words God bless you Phil
I should have put some whipped creme on your words, at least! 😊
Your knowledge and patience impressive. The wood finish is exquisite. Thank you!
😊
I get a tickle out of your laugh. The piece is so unusual too. 🤣
Good to know, Vickie, thank you! 😊
I don’t think I’ve seen anything give you as much grief as what this did but it did turn out looking very cool
The one I'm working on now is worse, Lynda! 😊
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop can’t wait to see that one 😁
Absolutely gorgeous Phil.
The before and after pictures are amazing.
Great looking little bowl Phil.
Take care my friend.
Cheers, Huw
Good to see you this morning, Huw and thanks! 😊
Another great video. Also, thanks for helping that family that was going to loose their home
Thank you, Paul! 😊
I always worry when a video slows down because I know what’s going to happen but it ‘turned’ out lovely. I was showing my young swimmers yesterday a UA-cam video of Dawdon pit pond where I used to train as a high board diver in an open air pool in the middle of a working colliery and one said: “Was that back in the olden days?” I thought you, Gary and myself were contemporaries but, from you last comments, it appears not. But don’t we look good?! Keep up the good work, Phil 🌞
We do look good, Ray! 😊
Good job Phil, I love your vision, amazing piece, I see a deflated whale 🐋 ❤ thanks
Thanks so much! 😊
Thank You Phill.... WOW, you figured out how to hold that "thing", excellent. Phil you are a woodturner that when you decide to turn something, whatever something that may be, you figure out how and you do it!!! My 2 thumbs up to you Phil. A bit difficult to turn with that interrupted cut but it all worked out for the good and I think that wood has a very nice color. The before & after are quite dramatic. So Phil the name of the hedge/stump is Escallonia ( Pink Princess or Fradesii ). There is perhaps 50+ of these dead 25-year-old hedges that were 5+ foot tall. Why they decided to die I do not know. A very durable and attractive hedge when healthy.
Very nice turning today Phil and until next time ... TM😁
Wow, you got the name of it? Cool! Not sure I can pronounce it! Maybe I'll just go with the Pink Princess when I turn the larger piece. Thank you, Tuffy! 😊
Great piece Phil, love how you explain every step of the process. And I know everyone says it but your chuckl is so infectious.
Haha, good to know, thank you! 😊
Phil and his flying fog (wood). Initially it looked verily like Manzanita. Now that I see the inside, I’m not so sure. This was a great video. Off the turning path so to speak.
Keep the aspidistra flying!
Be well.
God bless,
Paul
Tuffy told me it was not Manzanita but I didn't believe him. Now that I've turned it, I do. He named it down in his comment. 😊
It does look like a shoe! I wouldn't have taken that piece on. Beautiful work.
😊
Great piece. Not sure why I wasn’t surprised when it came off the chuck. Great recovery. Lovely piece.
Thanks, Doug! 😊
Very cute Phil! I think Tuffy is trying to find a piece of wood that you are unable to make something out of. So far, no luck Tuffy!
😊
Hi Karen...Well what can I say but I will keep on trying HA.... perhaps one of these days... TM
I would have never thought that piece could be turned into anything... You amazed me once again! Thanx 4 showing me again that one man's trash can become another's treasure... You are a treasure that creates treasures! Thanx 4 sharing Phil, and of course I'll keep watching!!! ✌️😎👍
Wonderful, thank you! 😊
Phil you will turn anything, but it’s always a nice piece.
I'll keep trying, Ronnie! 😊
Don't know exactly what this is but I do like the results. Nice work Phil. Have a great weekend. 🥰
Thanks, Mary, you too! 😊
It looks more like a chaise lounge to me, Phil! Good work!
😊
Hi 👋 Phil, from Phil, That is a great idea with the cam lock clamp on the drill press, and the wood worm screw extension I think I remember seeing it before, great tool. The shoe sculpture turning looks pretty amazing, you just need to make the right hand Shoe 👠, and mount it on a frame or another piece of unusual wood and I’m sure somebody will pay you good money for the sculpture, even one of these famous shoe companies, as we all know there is people out there that likes art sculpture, Great looking 👀 peace, Phil from the moulin France,
I wish I had time for all that, Phil! Thank you my friend! 😊
Phil, what a cracking wee piece you turned there buddy, you certainly have the patience for pieces like that. Well done.
Yes, thanks, Alan! 😊
Amazing piece Phil. But perhaps more of a witches shoe.😅 I like it when you turn at normal speed because it lets me hear the actual sound of the turning. That way I know the sounds coming from my turning efforts are normal. It makes me feel better about my ability. Thanks.
Noted! 😊
I think its so awesome Phil, that you can turn something like that piece of wood, into something so great!
Thanks, Laura! 😊
🙋♂️🏴 Hi Phil it's mazing how you manage to create such fantastic pieces out of so strange and odd shaped bits of FOG wood. I think that because you always manage, your friends are setting you bigger challenges, but they haven't defeated the master turner.
I just finished a bigger challenge than this one, John. Next weeks video. Thank you! 😊
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop I'm really excited roll on next Friday.
If it smelled a bit piney, I would say, Juniper? It's very cool!👍😊
No odor from this one but I'm turning a Juniper piece now and it smells like a pencil sharpener! 😊
I didn't think youd be able to turn much out of this piece, then I thought come on Amanda you saying this about Phil he can turn nearly everything he is very talented and a masterwoodturner. This wood has lovely grain and nooks and crannies, the bark is wonderful. I really love this wee dish is a piece of art you have turned it is magnificent and unique well done. Take care of yourself from Amanda xx
Such a kind comment, Amanda, thank you! 😊
I and I’m sure you do also get so much satisfaction making something out of a small piece of so called scrap, good job.
😊
Great discussion on the Drill Press.....Interesting turn
Thanks, John! 😊
Phil, I have been sitting 15 minutes trying to compliment you on this beautiful turning and thank you for the inspiration well Done my friend
Sometimes plain and simple say it best! You nailed it. 😉👌
Wow, thank you, Wayne! 😊
I’m always amazed at how you take an unremarkable knob of wood and turn it into a piece of art.
Thanks, Betty! 😊
That is just way too cool! 😎 As you're holding it toward the end, the profile made me think of a Victorian reclining couch. Well, in miniature, anyway.
Thanks to Tuffy for the shrubbery! 😂
Hi Dave, ... Phil always seems to figure out a way to hold these odd pieces. All you woodturners have tricks up your (rolled up) sleeves.... TM
@@tuffymartinez Ha! I have a cat named Trixie. That's as close to 'tricks' as I can get. 😺
Yeah, I can see the couch, too, Dave! 😊
Wow, what a challenge, well done, Phil!
😊
An odd piece indeed, but a nice work of art. You see things in wood no other do. Thank you for sharing your work.🌿 👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you very much, Rob! 😊
Another one-of-a-kind unique bowl. Attaboy Phil.
Thanks, Clint! 😊
Another dandy, Phil! You certainly have a gift for turning what would normally be "scrap pile" wood into something beautiful. Thanks!
Working on another one now and it's a pain! 😊
i love that bowl !!!!!!!!!!!
😊
It's a squirrel pool lounger.... love the way that you can take a piece of wood that, for most, would remain at the back of the pile and turn it into something to be proud of. When it threw itself off the lathe I feared for the recess being snarled up as it was living on the ragged edge already but it was just a little nick, phew. Lovely piece of art Phil, as always. You continue to inspire me and I continue to turn wood into shavings.
Cool, thanks, Colin! 😊
Phil,
That is one very interesting piece, there is so much to look at! Thank you for sharing 👍😎
Thanks, Luie! 😊
That's nice. Phil. I agree with the ones who said it looks like a recliner. The part where you said the heel straps go is the head rest with wings.
Bill
😊
Really awesome bowl Phil! I love rootballs because they are always just so unique!
😊
You always do a really nice job Phil. Very unique. And I do see the shoe! Thx and take care.
Glad you like it, thank you! 😊
Nice one Phil. Reminds me of a hammock. I love it. Your handiwork reminds me of an old saw, viz., "where there's a will, there's a way".
You are right, Kersi! I don't always know what it will be but I do know it will be something! 😊
Beautiful Phil, I saw a bear as you were turning it.
I saw him in the beginning, Jean! 😊
Wow Phil, you make it look so easy, what a transformation. Thanks for sharing. Stay Safe, Jules, Droitwich, England
Ah, yes, easy peasy, the magic of editing! LOL! Thank you, Jules! 😊
Hey cool dude! I saw the shoe! 😆 So, in my crazy imagination, looking down at it, I see an otter 🦦 floating on its back. (An otter that may have been in a Dali or Picasso painting.) 😂😂 Has it been hot up there? We’ve been in the high 80’s low 90’s. No AC in our house. 🥵 Hug a tree for me, well at least say hi. 🤪🤪 Have a great week! See you next time. Lots and lots of hugs to you! 🖖🏼 🦕 💫🌸Roma 🌲💚🌳🦅
It has been a pleasant summer for the most part, Roma. Mid to upper 70's! Love it! But, the warmest part of our summer is coming so who knows? Yours doesn't sound too bad but 90's is kind of a pain! I'll nod to the trees as I make my way back out to the shop in an hour or so. I'll be sure to mention your name! 😊
Lost for words amazing what you come out with next. Great piece. All the best from Lincolnshire UK
Thank you, Gary in Lincolnshire! 😊
Phil, You have a good imagination at the start that turns out to be a real thing at the end. Great job!
Cosmo from Billerica, MA.
Many thanks, Cosmo! 😊
You amaze me once again you take this piece with all of its twist and turns and keep it beauty and make a master piece I love what you do Phil amazing!! Larry
😊
Cool bowl, and who knows what kind of wood it is but you brought out its best features, well done and thanks!
Cheers Al
Glad you enjoyed it 😊
Nice job, Phil. I'm going to guess it is boxwood because you said it is really hard and the donor stated it came from some type of hedge. We don't let boxwood get very large in this country, but it was used for wooded plane bodies many years ago before Mr. Stanley took over the world by making all metal hand planes.
Good to know, Jim, thanks! 😊
Always enjoy your videos. All works are a masterpiece.
😊
Looks awesome Phil perfect for keys and change Great job Phil enjoyed watching it's been a little bit
Good to see you around, Rich! 😊
I love your sanding technique. Here in California we call that bush a "juniper " if you ever had to trim the hedge you would immediately recognize it!
Great job.
Cool, thanks 😊
Looks like a tiny recliner for a forest fairy! Wow, did that scare me when it flew off!
It does look like that, too, Audie! Sorry for the scare! 😊
I enjoyed your video as always never a dull moment watching you turn impossible pieces of wood
Glad you enjoyed it, Gary, thank you! 😊
Beautiful. I like the pieces that start from wood that is not obviously round.
Me too, Walt! 😊
I must say it was a tangled mess, but again you made it great. If you look at it at just the right angle it looks a frog reclining against a log.
😊
The pleasure is always. beautiful😊
😊
I would say Leland cypress Phil. Thank you for sharing. I hope I see you on the next one
😊
