- I keep working at getting better at spindle turning but I always seem to create more problems than I solve. Still, I got there in the end! Finished this Mountain Mahogany (partially) in shellac.

LOL! Thanks, Jay! 😊
Nice.... Cracks, splits, and checks.....the bane of all turners.!!
Thanks, Ray! 😊
You are right Phil, it doesn’t look good, it looks great. It is amazing how you can see and bring out the best in an ordinary piece of wood.
Thank you, Doug! 😊
Beautiful Piece Phil. A good challenge never stops you from turning a beautiful piece.
Thanks for sharing..
Thanks, Carl! 😊
Its a very pretty little vase! You let the wood tell you what it wanted to be!
ThankscPhil!
Thank you, Texana! 😊
I really love this one! It's imperfections make it perfect.
Thank you, Kristi! 😊
That piece of wood went from November mists to Autumn Glory, so very pretty.
Cool, thank you, Margaret! 😊
Phil,
Excellent piece. You definitely got me smiling with this one 😋.
Keep the aspidistra flying!
God bless,
Paul
Thank you, Paul! 😊
That certainly shows the beauty with in, brought to life with the crafter’s hand. Great work.
Thank you, Dale! 😊
A prime example of fire wood being turned into something other than heat.
😊
Very nice Phill God bless you. Your artistry is a true gift from God.
Thanks, Bob! 😊
Nice save Phil!! I thought that one might get away from you ... then I returned to reality and remembered I'm talking to Phil the TurnMaster!!
Haha, thanks, Geoff! 😊
Again another beautiful turning. Thanks for sharing
Thank you, Charles! 😊
Beautiful spin carving.
I had to laugh while you were turning. I was holding my phone watching your video. My phone slipped out of my hand at the same time as you had a chip out. So you can blame me for the chipping.
Another great turning and a beautiful vase.
LOL! OK, I blame you, John! 😊
Thank You Phil, Thank You Joe from Louisiana... First glance at the outside I thought dry Eucalyptus. When I saw the heartwood & what you said I figured Mountain Mahogany? Well Phil this one turned out just fine. Quite an attractive piece. Not just nicely turned but also learning (and we all continue to learn until the bitter end) how to read a piece of wood and what it takes to have success & you had success with this piece. Until next time ... TM
Thank you, my friend! You know your woods! 😊
Your usual excellent work. It's a pretty vase. Thanks for sharing. Have a great weekend. 🙂
Thank you, Mary! 😊
Good morning Phil, I rally love this one.
As many others have said the contrast to between the finished and unfinished surfaces is just brilliant.
Great video as ever and time for a new hot cup of tea.
Take care my friend.
Cheers, Huw
Thanks a lot, Huw, I appreciate your time and comment! 😊
If anyone can make a piece of wood beautiful it is you 👍👌👏
Thank you, James! 😊
The vase is sooo cute & the wood is beautiful.
😊
For a moment I thought you lost your way, but I love what you brought out. Lovely piece, I now want to do something similar.🥂
Thanks, Johan! 😊
I wasn’t sure if I was on like this one but now that you’re finished, I think I do. It did turn out cute and that gray looks good.
Thank you, Lynda! 😊
I can see that piece sitting on a table in a log cabin. It turned out nicer than I thought it would.
Thanks, Ronnie! 😊
Pretty vase, it has such beautiful wood and you brought out its beauty, well done and thanks!
Cheers Al
Thanks, Al! 😊
Great looking piece Phil, the finish came out great, I do look forward to your next video we never know what to expect. Thanks Phil I really do enjoy your videos .
Thank you, James! 😊
Beautiful Phil. Love the chuck and dowel trick to take off the Tenon.
Thanks, Pete! 😊
Well that wasn't where I thought you were going with that but wow, you done good Phil. Iike the smooth shiney finish in contrast to the gray natural edge. The wood, of course, is fantastic and you brought out its beauty perfectly.
Thank you, Steve! 😊
This looks beautiful Phil. Well done young man.
😊
We love your videos, Phil! You solved those ‘problems’ beautifully!
Thank you, Michael! 😊
I think you could call that the fighting Mountain Mahogany Phil, still you were victorious in the end and nice to see you do another spindle turning. Good job Phil. 😁
Thanks a lot, Lewis! 😊
That's very pretty, Phil! Love the weathered look.
Thank you, Karen! 😊
👍 Great save! I really like the colors on this one.
😊
Each part of the vase sets off the other- wow!
😊
That's just beautiful! What a glorious idea! ❤😊❤ Thank you for sharing your beautiful work
Thank you, LisaMarie! 😊
It took as long to remove the tenon as it did to turn the whole vase. I love that you left the bottom natural. I thought the hardwood when you applied the finish would have been a lot more red in color. Beautiful vase Phil.
Thanks for the show.
Joel
Thank you, Joel! 😊
Love it, peace of art by nature and or including you made together💝🙏🕯
Thank you! 😊
Love it.. Some what an oddity. Thanks for the view always looking forward to the next Phil! Love u🤩
Thank you, David! 😊
Phil, Phil, Phil… beautiful work as always!
Many thanks, Chris! 😊
Well, that looks like a fun project! I used to make some bud vases that could easily be mistaken for small bowling alley pins. They were made from curly maple that were rejected from a guitar maker. They turned out ugly but gave them as Christmas presents to neighbors I didn't really like, so I got bonus niceness points for my efforts. Even as ugly as they were, they were displayed proudly! Some people just have no taste!
LOL! Thanks for the chuckle, Robert! 😊
Beautiful emerging vase, Phil. 😊
Thank you! 😊 Cheers!
Another great video - I like how you explain things - thank you!!!
Glad you liked it! 😊 Thank you, Kathy!
Nice little bud vase, came out looking real nice.
😊
Another great example of less is more cobber. Really nice little vase. Cheers Deno
It can be. Thanks, Deno! 😊
That turned out really nice Phil! I really like it! This piece also gives my some ideas. Thanks!
Cool, thanks, David! 😊
Pretty little bud vase….love your vision….👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you, Loraine! 😊
That is so beautiful. You did a great job keeping the original beauty of the wood. Love it.
Thank you so much, Kathleen! 😊
Beautiful vase. Well done. 😊
Thank you! 😊
Фил, как всегда отличная работа. Мне очень нравится это произведение искусства.
Я так рада, что вам понравилось, спасибо! 😊
Beautiful results as usual but I would have been scared to death that it would explode with all the cracks that were showing , a very brave endeavor by one of the most talented natural turners
Thank you, Bob! 😊
Hi Phil. Love the unturned wood. A delicious contrast, thank goodness you didn’t feel the need to put any kind of finish on it. Great piece. Regards Richard
Glad you enjoyed it, Richard! 😊
Pretty nice looking vase. ❤
😊
Hi 👋, Phil from Phil, I hope you are keeping safe and well, Great looking 👀 Vase , surprise in what he can do from a rough bit of log, Back in the early 80s I was given some mahogany boards and they had been left outside for a few years and they look very similar sort of colour so I definitely think you’re right mahogany, in fact, I’ll go as far to say that I might still have two boards in my locker back in the UK, something to look forward to, Splendid work , Phil from the moulin.
Enjoy them when you get to them, Phil! 😊
Perfect for a little lamp stand at a beach house or cabin!
😊
Really like the merging colours of the weathered grey with the sap and heart wood, turned out great.
All the best to you.
Regards Jim
Thank you, Jim! 😊
Super result Phil. Brightened a very wet afternoon in Scotland. About to order my next load of fire logs. Sure to contain some weed pots! Take care.
Absolutely, Kevin, turn it, don't burn it! 😊
Hi Phil, Another beautiful piece. I love the fact that you just turn what you get. I had to start doing my own just to experience the beauty and challenge of every piece of odd shaped wood. And I couldn’t feel how wonderful your pieces feIt, I could see them, but not feel them. So by learning from you I’m blessed with I hope the same excitement you have with a gorgeously soft smooth finis,. touching them is a wonderful thing.
Yes! So much to feel and appreciate in these natural pieces! 😊
Very beautiful piece, I’d like to find some wood like that for sure. Great job as always, looking forward to the next project.
Thanks, Richard! 😊
From whether you had to work with that turned out extremely well. 👍👍👍
Thank you, Steve! 😀
That turned out very cute Phil. Beautiful!!
😊
Beautiful and unusual!
😊
That's pretty! Greetings from Scotland. ⛰
Thanks Al in Scotland! 😊
Hi Phil what a wonderful wood. I like how you kept the bottom half naturally it looks cool the old weathed lokk is brilliant. The vase is magnificent well turned Phil. Amanda xx
Thank you, Amanda! 😊
That wood is awesome! Another beauty!
😊
Looks great Phil. Aside from the bark, on camera, it looks like it could be some sort of cherry. Whatever it is, it is pretty darn nice!
Mountain Mahogany, Tom. 😊
Simply beautiful Phil. What a great decision not to put any finish on the base section. Wow it looks so cool with the amazing finish you got on the turned part.
Not until you got if off the lathe and showed us did the real beauty show up. Almost looks like an emerging bottle. I kept waiting for it to just rise up out of there. But after a few hours I stopped waiting LOL
Lots of great tips in this video as well.
Seeya!
Gary
Haha, you always make me chuckle Gary, but this time I laughed out loud! Thank you, my friend! I needed that! 😊
Yes, another lovely one! With the sap/ heart contrast, I had wondered if it might be walnut...but, then, I don't know the North American woods!
😊
A pleasure as always beautiful emerging vase😊
Thanks, George! 😊
Espectacular Phil 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Thank you! 😊
Love it!
A thumbs up as usual 👍.
And the big cake day is approaching 🎂 Congratulations!
Carsten
Cool, thanks, Carsten! You're right, how nice of you to know that! 😊
A very nice work of art sir. Thanks for sharing your skills with us.🌿 👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you for watching! 😊
I think it turned out surprisingly well.
Thanks, Hank! 😊
I like the emerging vase idea.
Cool! 😊
That is some really pretty wood; the grain is just awesome. Another great piece; I like the contrast between the weathered base and the highly finished top.
Thank you, Mark, me too! 😊
Bonsoir Phil ! Jean-Luc
Mêmes couleurs ici, Jean-Luc ! Merci! 😊
Very nice twig pot and love the camera work thanks 😊 for SHARING
Thanks so much 😊
Nice save Phil. For a while I was beginning to think that this might be a video about making wood chips rather than a vase. Those cracks can be a disaster when turning a log in a spindle format. Thanks for sharing.
You just need to be sure the cracks have a stopping point, Jim. 😊
Very Nice. I am surprised that the cracks did not go all the way throu. Great piece.
Definitely something I always look for, David. These all came to a definite stop so, proceed! 😊
Thanks so much Phil! That's beautiful. I hope to try something like that soon.
😊
It’s a Beauty, Phil!
Thanks, Joshua! 😊
Nice looking vase, it’s amazing what you turn with wood I would put into the firewood pile
😊
Wow. I just found your videos today and your pieces are just gorgeous!!! ❤ I’m going to make a table for mom for Christmas from a live edge! I’ve never done before. I used a lathe in grade 8 it was incredibly satisfying!! It is also watching you!! So beautiful!! ❤
Wonderful, have fun! 😊
It is different for sure. I like it.
😊
Very nice little bud vase. I need a house full.
Get to busy, Steve! 😊
Stunning piece of art. ❤
Thank you, Maddie! 😊
Love the vase. You taught another lesson tonight using the drill chuck and wood dowel. Great video Phil. Take care. Dan
Cool, thanks, Dan! 😊
Lovely finish on the hardwood bit Phil you persevered
well done ,nice result as always .
Thank you! 😊
Great piece Phil. The turned and finished portion is so elegant, especially against the rugged, weathered gray of the unturned portion. Beautiful piece.
Glad you like it, Doug, thank you! 😊
I hope you never get tired of saying Howdy. At least in these videos.
Haha, I appreciate that, Jack, thank you! 😊
Hi Phil, a wonderful creative turning. Love the jam chuck idea for removing the tenon although I was holding my breath half expecting that crack in the side to pop open. All the best from the UK, Mike
Haha, luckily, no flying wood in this one, Mike! 😊
Another beautiful piece Phil
Glad you like it, Jay, thanks! 😊
An emerging "little brown jug".
😊
That is so pretty a real good job done Phil ❤
Thanks, Wendy! 😊
That looks like the wood from the bean trees I have here … Exactly those colors.
Interesting! 😊
Phil you had me on the edge of my seat on that turn I just done a 5 inch cedar bowl and it gave me fits you make turning look easy maybe someday I will be as smooth as you lol
Thank you, Bobby! I'm editing a video now that has ME on the edge of my seat and I was there! LOL! It's not easy but, it will come, it will get easier. 😀
I have a bunch of walnut that is weathered like this so maybe…. Turned out great!
Have fun with yours! 😊
Really nice, Phil. It's different than what I'm used to calling an emerging vase, but it's great just the same.
Bill
😊
An interesting one for sure. Too bad the old wood gave you grief. You pulled it off nicely!
Thanks, Christine! 😊
It’s good to look a little old. No cracks, but I have wrinkles! 71 and still running!
Vase turned out pretty! Love the natural look you always leave!
Thanks again, Phil!
Wonderful! Thanks, Kelly! 😊
A wee beauty 😊
😊
