The Bloody Stump! - Wood Turning
Вставка
- Опубліковано 2 гру 2020
- I was confused about the origin of this wood. It turns out it is from the Blood Orange tree. This tree provides the blood colored oranges rather than the typical orange colored fruit. The piece turned in this video is from the stump of the tree. Finished in Shellac, it is 13 1/2" diameter and 5" deep.

We feel the same way! Thank you! 😊
A blood orange is a delicious type of orange. If you get a chance to eat one they are very tasty. The bowl is as intriguing as the fruit. You and mother nature created an amazing work of art!!! 😊
Thanks for the info, Mary. I keep forgetting to look when I'm in the produce section. Maybe your comment will help remind me! 😊
Hi Phil when I make a bowl it’s a bowl. When you make one it’s a work of Art. Fantastic
Thanks, Allan! I just take advantage of the art already in there and try to preserve it rather than remove it. 😊
Great video and a beautiful bowl. Thanks, also, from all of us old geezers for not running music over your instructions. It's hard enough to hear without the music overriding everything. Please keep up the good work.
Speaking as a geezer myself, Mark, I hear ya! LOL! Thank you so much! 😊
The thing I really like about this bowl is that I can see Homer Simpson's face in the inside of the bowl. I really love this bowl and it ruly is a work of art. Thanks for the video.
😊
Wow, Yes , well spotted
This wood is so incredible! It reminds me of life - unpredictable, rough in places, and a joy to experience. Well done on a fine piece!
I'm so glad you like it, thank you, Susannah! 😊
It turned out to be absolutely stunning! I love the colors 👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿
Thank you so much! 😊
This piece looked like a giant orchid to me.
Very pretty!
It does! 😊
I must say that piece of wood before the last stage had a ceramic quality to it it one of the best lumps of wood I've seen great texture and you handled it's hidden treasures perfectly a fantastic turn.....
Wow, thank you! 😊
I have a blood orange tree, the fruit is rather bitter than normal oranges my daughter in law loves it but I prefer true oranges. Your bowl is lovely even sweeter than the fruit. Love the free edge on it, mucho sweet❤️
Cool, thank you, Karen! 😊
Yes I love it too! All the cracks & crevices give it character 👍
I'm glad you love it, Toni and I agree about the character. Thank you for taking your time to watch and comment! 😊
While watching you work on the blood orange bowl, I saw a large, exotic flower.
The yellow center, purpley peddles, the general shape, all suggest the idea!
Lovely!
Wonderful, Linda, thank you! 😊
Very unique!!! I too like the finished product. Blood oranges have a red meat and really good flavors.
Good to know, Bill, I will be on the lookout for some. Thank you!
pretty surprise in the middle of this clump of wood! the live edges, and spot on the side, and the curl are truly beautiful on this one definately would love to have that as a showpiece!!
Glad you like it! 😊
Oh man I so love it. Looks like a huge flower and the bark on the side looks like a fish with a open mouth. Stunning design.
Sometimes we get that piece that has the natural flower shape and I love that part, too! 😊
That is so Big, but all the more beautiful for it. It definitely looks like a flower, especially with the center being yellow. This was great to watch, hopefully you get some more of this.
😊
It's nice to see what can be done with a piece of firewood. Like normal Phil, really nice. Good imagination. Have a beautiful weekend.
Thanks, Richard, you too! 😊
You excelled yourself. It's lovely and you worked so hard. Blood oranges are very good to eat. Thank you to Tuffy for sending and to you for sharing. See you soon.
I gotta get me some of those oranges. Everyone says they are delicious. Thank you for watching, I appreciate it! 😊
The end is here. This thing is so lovely it makes my heart ache! My gosh!
Haha, thank you so much, Linda! 😊
Fruit wood is very dense. You did an excellent job. Beautiful piece.
Thank you so much, James!
Phil I love all your pieces, but I think this blood orange bowl is especially nice. Great job. Three✔️✔️✔️’s for you.
Thank you so much, Michael! 😊 I agree, this one is special.
Love it.....colour is really interesting....like a cross section of antler...thanks Phil. ..Canada
Many thanks, Bruce! 😊
Ahh..What a lovely piece! With the cream and darker contrast in the centre, coupled with the smaller radial cracks, it looks so much like a very large flower! Well done!
It does! I'm glad you like it, Stephanie, thank you!
Beautiful piece! "Good looking" says my computer. I like the subtle colour contrast and the floral form.
Thank you! Cheers! 😊
I’ve never heard of this wood but how wonderful it is. The top is great but I also love all the holes and cracks.
I think it's pretty cool too, Christine, thank you! 😊
If you live in or have lived in Florida, the Blood Orange is well known. looks like the wood is just as pretty as the fruit is good. Great job.
😊
What a great pice . I love the outside, it looks like a face . The hole looks like his eye. I know I'm nuts.
Haha, no, I don't think you're nuts, Jane! We all see something different in these pieces. 😊
I loved that too! 👏🏻 Great! It looks as if the bowl was made of marble and wood!
I agree, Cintia, looks a lot like marble. Thank you! 😊
Phil; the master of weird wood. If no one else will tackle it, give it to Phil, he'll make a master piece out of it. Another good watch Phil.
Haha, thank you, Dan, for your great, "pick-me-up" comment! 😊
Blood orange tree so cool !
For sure, Ray! 😊
Wow! It's like an exotic flower!
Kinda, Jussi! Thanks for watching!

Good work Phil, always enjoy your videos. FYI, I sold my Jet 16 42 and putting everything else in storage for 6+ months as we sold the house and are moving to Anderson Island. I'll keep watching...
Thank you, Peter! How will you get through the winter with no lathe? Will you be turning at your new place? Take good care and stay safe, my friend!
Another winner Phil!
I’ve commented before about your commentary, how it ties your intended results with the end product. I feel that is where a lot of education occurs. I still think you can hear me, Again I had the thought that “you may want to try ....”. You’re really good, I couldn’t even get the complete thought out before you changed tactics.
Keep turning brother!
Thank you, Scott! Next time don't stand so close, I could feel you breathing down my neck! LOL! 😊
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop How else can I see exactly what you’re doing!😄
@@scottpeterson5913 LOL!
I am in awe at how you can take a chunk of wood and turn it into beautiful art.
Thank you very much, Tammy! 😊
I follow a few turners on UA-cam ...you set a very high standard for your turnings. It's amazing the projects you have completed when looking at the source you started with. Excellent work.
Thanks a lot, John! 😄

Thank you very much, Rod! 😊
That turned out beautiful Phil.
I'm glad you like it, Donald, thank you! 😊
Very interesting and challenging chunk of wood. But you once again did well with it, producing a very nice final shape. Luckily it is big enough to support those thicker walls. My wood arrived Wednesday, thank you again!
Thank you, Valerie! I hope there is something you can use that you haven't seen before but that's not likely with the amount of wood you seem to be able to come up with. 😊
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop well,..... the small piece does seem to be a mystery so far! Walnut and juniper should be fun to turn!
@@valeriehenschel1590 The small one is Olive! It will be beautiful!
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop Wonderful. It should smell really good on the lathe!
Tough piece Phil, you did wonders working it. 👍👍👍
Yes it was but I'm glad you enjoyed it, M H, thank you!
It looks like the bloom from the Blood Red orange tree. Very pretty.
Cool, thank you, Barbara! 😊
This is a fruit bowl for oranges if ever there was one. Nice piece!
Yes! Thank you, James! 😊
Seen again. Facinating turn, Phil! I love your negative edge scraper, and your buggy. I wish they were street legal where I live. A great result with that blood orange piece.
Thank you, Richard! 😊
I see a beautiful endgrain bowl from which you just poured out a very smooth vanilla custard sauce. Lovely!!
The blood orange fruit tastes like an orange but a little bitter and is of course blood coloured.
I'm so glad you like it, Aranka, thank you! 😊
Every time I think I’ve seen my favorite piece you out do yourself with another spectacular work of art. Phil you really are the best wood turner out there!!!
Wow, thank you! 😊
Beautiful piece / great job. Thanks for sharing
Thank you very much, Curtis! 😊
Another beautiful piece of work.
I turned my first bowl the other day. I can’t wait till the day that I can make something as beautiful.
Good for you, Lee! With the first one under your belt, the rest will be easy-peasy! 😊
Well, the first attempt didn’t go as planed. I got a bad catch and sent it flying and it cracked. The next attempt went much better. It was a small live edge bowl made from Chinese Tallow. A friend came by today and fell in love with it and said it would make a great candle holder, I gave my friend the bowl. I’m working on my fifth bowl now, White Oak.
Keep up the beautiful turning that you, you are the one that really inspired me to get into turning, but it may take a little time before it’s easy peasy.
That was an adventure! A blood orange blossom bowl! Gorgeous!
Thank you, Colleen! 😊
Phil, to me it looks like a beautiful yellow flower... Though Simple, but Sure it's a .Great Job complete....
I agree, yellow flower, thank you! 😊
Holy Cow! I watched the with one eye and had all my fingers crossed. It is so beautiful! I'm really happy you left it chunky. It is what it wanted to be. 👌❤👌

Fascinating how the cracks stop at the heart wood.
It is! 😃
Gorgeous piece. Reminds me of a hibiscus flower looking into it. Love the tall shape of it.
That's a good description, Glenda. Thank you!
Blood oranges are so tasty. I can only imagine how hard that wood would be if it were dry! Absolutely gorgeous bowl 😍
I'm glad you like it, Maurine, thank you! I will be on the lookout for some of those oranges.

A beautiful bowl. I suggest you keep Tuffy on your Christmas Card list, he's a friend worth keeping. God bless, stay safe. Tony
