Defects Can Be A Great Feature! - Wood Turning
Вставка
- Опубліковано 3 тра 2023
- Originally thought to be FOG wood (Found On Ground) turned out to be American Elm. Super tight and dense grain, this came with a wonderful bark inclusion which some might call a defect. For me, it's these "defects" that can make or break a piece. Finished in Feed & Wax.

It's maybe not much, but it's a classic, no matter what you think of it. You do your best, and then some, and that makes it special. Keep doing what you do best, and accept that it's better than most. ❤
I appreciate that, Derrick! 😊
Phil, I've been slowly rehabbing for some time now, gotta stretch out these "golden years" LOL. So I have to tell you how much you have helped me keep up the good fight. I look forward to your videos, and really do admire what you can do with a piece of wood. You've changed my opinion of what "firewood" is, and watching the new and old videos is a high point in my day! Thank you, and God bless! Rick
I appreciate your time spent with me, Rick! I wish it was under better circumstances. Wishing you a speedy recovery! 😀
I met a nice guy today at a craft fair. We talked shop a bit as I looked over his pieces. He had all if them labeled with the type if tree except for one that I happened to pick up. He told me it was fog wood, and my eyebrows perked up. When I said I watch videos on UA-cam where someone uses that term, he said," Is it Phil Anderson?" You are famous, Phil! This happened in River Falls, Wisconsin. What a small world it is, and thankfully its full of interesting bits of wood for us to find and play with.
A note on Elm, if you are trying to figure out if that's what it is, if it's got any life left in it, it has a distinct smell when it's worked. Especially sanding will bring it out. It smells like a dirty barnyard. It's not really too bad, but it does make it Elm. I do most things green, so it's a more potent aroma.
Haha, this is great, William, thanks for brightening my day! 😊
You deserve a great deal of credit for even starting. More for even continuing.
Thank you, Vaughn! 😃
Nice. Let's call it " 'Ol Helmet Head': Nice grain on the inside. Thanks, Phil.
😃
That was a textbook example of denubbing. Beautiful wood.
Thanks, Stew! 😀
Phil,
Excelsior! Thank you for a most amazing interlude.
WOOF, WOOF!
Keep the aspidistra flying!
God bless,
Paul
Haha, thanks, Paul! 😃
Hey Phil, I have been watching all of your videos for about two months everyday, I have been turning for two years you give great tips and inspiration. Keep up the great craftsmanship, thanks, John Morrissette in Vermont
I appreciate you sticking with me, John, thank you! 😃
Thanks for making another bowl that gives me inspiration to continue using "rough" pieces of wood.
The best kind, Walt! 😃
“FOG” In the hands of a Master Turner = Fantastic OutcomeGuaranteed! Thanks Phil
Haha, thank you for that, Bob! 😃
Phil, your work is amazing, don't down-play it. I like how the cranking runs thru the bowl. Nice work!!!!
Thanks, John! 😃
Good morning Phil. Beautiful bowl. You certainly are gifted, tha nks.
Thank you, Thomas! 😃
FOG- how appropriate! You can’t see what’s going to happen. But Phil you did a good job of finding that huge crack before you went to far. The bark looks so good. Just goes to show FOG is good! Beautiful bowl.
Haha, thanks, Kid! 😃
I love the shape! It's almost like an old claw foot tub! Just glorious! Thank you ❤
Thank you, LisaMarie! 😊
Phil the shape is great. The log will let you know what shape it wants to be. All we can do is go along with what it wants. And hopefully keep a few thing we like along the way. Beautiful job and God Bless.
Thank you, Dean! 😃
You sir are an artisan, a craftsman, an entertainer and a gentleman... Always enjoy watching your videos and learning new techniques. Beautifully done and one-of-a-kind as always. Thank you!

I'm glad you kept the bark when you showed us the top I saw the bark was purple. So beautiful. Lovely little bowl.
Thanks, Judith! 😃
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop my pleasure
Good morning, Phil.
FOG Elm must sand up very nicely. I almost reached in to feel it. I enjoyed your project and video. Keep moving forward, my friend.
I thought I could feel a hand over my shoulder, Ray! 😃 Thank you!
I was worried at first that it wouldn’t keep the bark. Turned out gorgeous.
Thank you, Christine! 😃
Cute bowl with lovely grain and color, well done and thanks!
Cheers Al
Thank you, Al! 😃
Another beautiful bowl Phil . Thanks for sharing .
😃
I like the shape, it's different and worthy of being a Phil piece.
😃
I love the grain and I really love it when they come out so smooth. Nice bowl Phil.
Thank you, Jean! 😃
I see a master piece Phil. It was a very enjoyable video. Thank you for sharing. I hope to see you on the next one
Thank you very much, Albert! 😃
Defects and flaws make the world go round.
That what I tell myself when I look in the mirror, Steve! 😃
As always another beautiful bowl from a odd cut of wood.😊
Thank you, Stephanie! 😃
That looks like a nice button holder! Thanks for the videos this week!
Haha, great idea! 😃
N-i-i-i-ice! And quite timely, as well. I'll be getting a chunk of this wood ready to chuck up a bit later today and this shows me what to expect. The log was found along the county road up from the shop a ways, where County Roads left it while clearing storm damage. It was brought down in the ice storm 2-and-a-half years ago and the date I wrote is when I sawed it into sections. It's just about time to go back and get samples of leaf and flower/seed for a definite ID. I'll let you know when I do.
Another great wood finding story, Dave! 😃 Yeah, let me know what you find out. Thanks, buddy!
Thanks for sending that wood to Phil so we could all enjoy it.
Bill
You make turning these challenging chunks of wood into beautiful pieces look so easy, Phil. It is quite inspirational. Thanks!
Easy peasy lemon squeezy, Greg! 😃
Now that's a bowl..
Be well my friend.
Dennis.
Good to hear from you, Dennis! Thank you, I'm so glad you took your time to watch and comment! 😃
A pretty little bowl. I like the unusual shape. 💕
Thanks, Vickie! 😃
Another nice bowl Phil. I too like the inclusion on this one. Thx and take care.
😃
I think it’s just beautiful, Phillips!
Thank you, Leona! 😊
looks like that scraper been sharpened a fair few times. sweet little bowl, its got some character to it.
It has, Arla but it keeps on a scrapin'! 😃
Love that you kept some of the bark!😁
Me too, Tee! 😃
Very nice little bowl. Looks like it was fun wood to turn. The bark was such an unusual color before you put the Howard's on!
Thank you, Leigh! 😃
Would make a perfect bathtub for a miniature doll house perfect shape.
😊
Great! You said you wished we could feel how nice and smooth it is so I decided to try. All I got out of it was a bunch of fingerprints to clean off my TV! The sad thing is that you probably believe that. Honest, Phil, I was just joking. I’m not really as stupid as people give me credit for. 🤔🤨
I can’t say that I’m crazy about the overall shape but it’s still a beautiful natural edge piece, my friend. Great video!! 👏👏👏
Take care,
…..Gord
I'm with you on the shape, Gord. Does that mean neither of us are crazy? Now get out the Windex! Or, maybe you guys just use snow, I don't really know. Thanks, buddy! 😃
Great work again Phil . Guess you better get ur thinking cap on and invent " feel - o - vision " so we can all feel the wood . Awesome skills .
Haha, I'll be workin' on it, Jeff! 😃
I don’t care what you say - I like the shape! …. 😁
OK! LOL! Thank you, Mark! 😃
You make treasure outta trash! Beautiful
Thank you, Patricia! 😃
Thank You Phil, Thank You Dave at Calmwood Creations... Phil you did a good solid turning today with a nice piece of FOG wood. American Elm is great looking wood and bark. I do not think I have dealt with American Elm or I am just getting forgetful (probably both). The logistics of turning Phil is part of the fun of watching. You turn, you run into unexpected whatever's inside and than your strategy changes. ALWAYS FUN & until next time Phil.... TM
I'm really looking forward to turning one of the other chunks of this soon, now that I've seen what can be done. Perhaps even a clue for what *not* to do. 😅
Yup, the wood keeps us guessing, Tuffy! You should be an old hand at woodturning by now. Or, are you saving yourself? LOL! thank you, buddy! 😃
I started turning in the 80's at a woodshop on an airforce base in England. There was a master turner who started teaching me the basics. I transferred stateside and learned on my own. Then along came youtube. I'm still a long way from being a master turner, but videos from you and a few others have really helped me be better. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and techniques.
Dave, I learned to turn from watching videos. Hundreds of them! It still took some perseverance but it all finally clicked. As long as you are having fun, you are way ahead of the game! Thanks for watching and for your comment! 😃
I find myself agreeing. Not wild about the shape, but the wood texture just shines!
We agree, Kathleen! 😃
Beautiful live edge American Elm bowl, Phil. 😊😊😊
Thank you! 😃
Sweet. This bowl says ... pour in some colorful m&m's :-) the shape is neat!
😃
Cute. Good place to keep your buttons. Thanks
Haha, there ya go, Garth! 😃
Another great M&M bowl. Nice job Phil!!
😃
Every time I remove a tenon I heard your voice to guide me. Thanks again for being an inspiration.
So cool! Thank you, Scruffy! 😃
Another nice piece. It’s a pleasure to watch your work have another wonderful day
I appreciate that, Duane, thank you! 😃
Handy Button container. Interesting turn.
There ya go, Alan! 😃
I like the shape and the really dark bark. Love it!
Cool, thanks, Brenda! 😃
That might grow on you, Phil. It really does have a great finish!
Thank you, Danella! 😃
Pretty little bowl, Phil. Thank you!
Thanks, Texana! 😃
Very nice 👍 I was waiting for the oh no but didn't see anything bad happen so that was good. My wife and I enjoy all your wood turning vids and the ones with all the new toys company's send you ❤️ thanks for sharing

You sure can ture ordinary into exceptional. Thanks for sharing 👍.
Thank you very much, Garet! 😃
Hi 👋 Phil from Phil, I hope you are all keeping safe and well, A great looking 👀 bowl, with y at the ELM 🌳 😂, I see you 👀 still got your fingers on the button 😂 , but you have nothing to show has , how ever I did see your buttons were undone, 😅
Great work of ART, I look 👀 forward to seeing your next project, PHIL FROM THE DARK SIDE OF THE MOULIN FRANCE.
Haha, I see you have been keeping up with my videos, Phil! Can't let those buttons come undone! Thanks for the giggles today! 😃
That wood has fantastic figure and the inclusion really gives it character. At about 17:42 in the video, the piece almost looks like an angry muppet 😀 Really like how you were able to keep the bark
Of course I had to go back and look...lol... I agree that it's very 'Muppetesque'.
I hadn't noticed that, Mark, thanks! 😃
Looks great Phil
Thanks! 😃
I like that you take the most strange and difficult pieces and you teach us to be creative. Thank you a lot
My pleasure, Alejandro, thank you for watching! 😃
It's beautiful Phil, and yes, I do wish I could feel it! Lol Hope you're doing well.
I wish you could too, Paige! Thank you, doing fine! 😃
Howdy, Phil. So delightful!
Thanks, Beverly! 😊
Phil, I l i k e this little bowl. It's cute. At 18:34, I see Africa. I thought it was warmer when I saw just your shirt on. Ten degrees Celsius is chilly for a shirt, Phil. About the same here, and rainy.
Oh! Almost fergot: May the 4th be with you. Hawhaw. Bonne semaine (good week) to ya.
I see Africa now, too, Red, thanks! 😃
I love the “fog” wood! I have a lot of fog wood so I’m going to use that lol😂 another nice one!
Cool, thanks, Mike! 😃
Hi Phil, great to see you - hope you are well! I really enjoyed watching - beatiful bowl!
Thank you, Paul, it's great to be seen! 😃
All your wood ends up smooth!
Great touch!
Thank you, Kelly! 😃
Come on Phil! It wasn't shinny it was a Glaze. Please don't be hard on yourself. It is a nice bowl as always Phil it is unique. God bless Phil.
😃
Another great vid from the Master, learn so much from you Phil. All the best from Lincolnshire UK 👀👀
Thank you, Gary! Big doin's over your way today! 😃
Very well done...looks like a mini roman tub...
😃
A good result, Phil. All our British elms were killed off by Dutch Elm Disease. The grain was similar to English oak.
Interesting, Richard, thank you! 😃
Bravo, Maestro. Great piece!
Jay
Thank you, Jay! 😃
Turned out great Phil.
😃
Pleasure as always, Phil😊
Thanks for stopping by, George! 😃
I use that same wax on my wood pens...good stuff. Nice work, glad it is starting to warm up! 🌳
Raining and 50° today! 😃
Its so cute! I know you dont like the shape but I love it! It would look awesome with a spider plant or such in it. I understand why you dont sell your stuff, thst would be so complicated i would think, but its a shame you dont because your stuff is so unique and you've done so many pieces i would love to own. Keep it up Phil!
See, I seldom think of how a piece could be improved by adding something like a plant to it, Karen. Great idea! Thank you! 😃
Great job once again Phil a beautiful piece of art work, all the best from Tasmania Australia 🇦🇺
Thank you, Roger! 😃
Bonsoir Phil !
Hi Phil, thanks for the video, that is a really nice piece and the defect is just one bit that makes it so much more interesting, always like the bark and defects, great job.
All the best to you.
Regards Jim
Thank you so much, Jim! 😃
Thanks Phil! I’ve been watching for over a year and I’ve learned so much from you. Like taking a “master class” at wood university, thanks!
Thanks a lot for sticking with me, Michael! 😃
I like the shape especially the way the top wings out. It is a pretty wood I like it. I haven’t watch many videos lately and nice to see your still at it.
And good for me to see you are still here, Lynda! Thank you! 😃
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop oh, yeah, can’t get rid of me that easy ha ha ha! This time of year is just busy with making pots for the plant nursery. Plus, I have 3 flowerbeds and a vegetable bed to tend to. It’s not leaving much time just to goof off and have fun. Don’t get me wrong. I enjoy the other things to but learning a new craft is just a different kind of fun. I did copy you and I ordered a set of the Benjamin’s best gouges and parting tools. They came in about a week ago, and I haven’t had a chance to break them in. But I am really looking forward to it. Thank you for continuing to share your artwork. I really appreciate it and even admire it.
Lovely piece Phil the finish right up my street 👍
Good to know, Jeff! 😃
Looks fantastic Phil I really like it it looks really pretty with that type of finish Blessings
Thank you, Wade! 😃
It’s beautiful, I like the shape ❤ thanks Phil.
Thank YOU, Maddie! 😃
Nicely done! Always a good time!
Thank you, Tim! 😃
In another video I heard you say, you like to be more like the big kids, I think there's a few big kids wiping dust out their eyes.
Haha, thank you, Fritz! 😃
Lovely fruit bowl !
Thank you, Carolyn! 😃
Very nice weird shaped bowl. 😮
LOL! Thanks, Marge! 😃
I genuinely appreciate what you share in terms of speeds, approach, tool choice, etc. I watch a lot of turning videos on 2X, but yours I watched at 1X to glean all the knowledge shared. And paused halfway through to subscribe.
So cool, Doug, thank you very much! 😊 I will try to be worthy.
Phil, a cracken wee live edge bowl well done
😃
🙋♂️🏴 Hi Phil tha seemed really hard work to start with but the end result is beautiful. Great to watch.
Thank you, John! 😃
That is beautiful...all the interest. I had my doubts, but it turned out great.
😃
Delightful piece Phil.
Thanks, Vicki! 😃
Yeah what a pretty little pot Phil, enjoyed seeing that materialize...
Here's something that might tickle you: I've been watching your wonderful craftsmanship for years, taking in all that you teach us as though one day when I might actually have the opportunity to turn something again I will have all your tips stored away ready to use. Well this evening it suddenly dawned on me that you raise the tool rest a little when you change to the smaller swept back gouge because it is smaller and therefore its centre is on a different plane. Now you must have told us that at some point but just now its gelled in my brain and I have brought forth full understanding!😅😂
I have a stick made of elm, English, since it was made in the West Country, Devon if memory serves, the top is formed from a large knot and that is also very smooth under the hand. Similar characteristics and colour to your piece too so I think youre right about its species. 👍👏
Such an interesting comment, Jude, thank you! I have my mother in laws "stick." Same knot on top, well worn and smooth. I treasure it, she was one of my favorite people. 😃
