I don't actually find Castlevania to be too hard, and this coming from a person whose never had a strong background with these kinds of games. Having recently played Ninja Gaiden, Super Ghouls n' Ghosts, and later Castlevanias, I'd probably say this game has a moderate difficulty. Victory is something you have to earn, but it's certainly not a pipedream. Sure, there are rare occasions where it's downright ridiculous, but in most cases, either its straightforward what you need to do, or you just gotta experiment till you find the right strategy (it requires some thinking but its not retardedly cryptic). There's usually only a couple screens each level where it gets super intense. You just need to practice at those and everything in-between should be easy if you aren't playing recklessly. John's sucking in his footage here, but that's because he's playing with no real rhythm. Doesn't seem like he's waiting for the perfect time to flail his whip. He just blindly runs ahead, leaps forward nonstop, and spams his whip until it hits something... that's not how you play Castlevania. You have to show some patience and wait for the proper cue to attack.
and going on a murderous rampage killing all of dracula's family with a whip made out of spiky chains to get the lawnmower back, and the orbs are lawn mower parts.

It's like the Angry Video Game Nerd said, if you take one single hit against Dracula, I'd say your chances against the Cookie Monster are up a rats ass. Seriously that's what Dracula's second form looks like, a demonic Cookie Monster with bat wings.
Double Shot was enough for me, but I still needed to be at full health (cuz the only way to get Double Shot if you didn't bring it is from Dracula's fireballs).
marplatense31 Single holy water is enough. If you are careful about his fireballs, you the only way Cookie Monster can hit you is if he pushes you in the corner. The holy water allows you to walk through him. So you only need two, maybe three bottles in total.
I don't know how many people know this, but with Beast Dracula, you can simply walk right through him to the other side of the screen while he's stunned by the holy water, so having to wait for a high jump to get under him isn't necessary. Also, Castlevania III took the difficulty of this game and just doubled it up.
That's not a whip, that's the cord you use to start the lawnmower. The first Belmont accidently ripped it out while trying to get it back. It's been passed down to teach Dracula a lesson: "Never fuck with a Belmont's garden."

I'm pretty sure you don't start in the Castle Entrance, I think that's actually the Outer Walls. That Castle your seeing afterwards is specifically the Masters Keep. Judging from everything Castlevania is about the size of an Actual Castle City, which would be fairly big and has enough room to house a Garden of two.
The way he jumps and speed are both major parts of a castlevania game's control. They don't need to limit the controls to make it hard but rewarding. An example is, like I just said, Grant from C3. He controls similar to simon from SC4 in that his jump and controls weren't too limited, but the game was still challenging enough.
Johnny's right about the final orb collecting, it was awesome to collect it after defeating dracula in this game. Granted it took me only a week to beat it this year after finally getting a crack at it, it was so satisfying collecting that last orb, which reminds me of beating the original Ninja Turtles and Lost Levels.

The satisfaction vs frustration thing really applies to all hard games, not just Castlevania. Also, the axe knight + medusa head hallway really isn't that bad. As long as you keep wailing on the axe knight he'll never hit you. The only real threat is the medusa heads, but they have a predictable pattern so you just need to stand in the right place and wait for them to pass you. My jaw dropped when I got through the first three levels without dying once. Then I got to the cavern which was when I started to suck again. Eh. Well, I still think this is a good game and I'm glad I got the chance to experience this classic.
00:04:23 I mean, the game IS hard, but for an NES game it is pretty friendly and *REASONABLY* fair. The mere fact that it gives you unlimited continues heavilly mitigates any potential frustration, and makes the difficulty far more reasonable since you can retry as many times as you like. While it can have frustrating or even unfair deaths from knockback or Simon walking off of platforms, they never ammount to more than re-doing a single level. It's not like you have to start the whole game all over again. You can retry every level as many times as you want starting with 3 lives after every game over. Because of that, this game is far more friendly and approachable than many games at the time. Compare this to Mario, Sonic or Battletoads, all franchises which used limited continues (or sometimes no continues at all) and Castlevania doesn't look so harsh in context. It's hard, but it lets you retry every stage as many times as you want if you're willing to perseveire. You can't say the same about many games from 8-bit and 16-bit generations.

Playing through this game for the first time (on an emulator) inspired by the Castlevania series on Netflix. After having played through the first few levels it strikes me that the bulk of the game is less one of skill than memorization. As in, you walk a few steps, get killed by enemy X, repeat knowing that enemy X is there. Time strikes, kill enemy X. Walk a few more steps, get killed by enemy Y, repeat knowing that enemy X is there. Time strikes, kill enemy X. Repeat knowing enemy Y is there. Time strikes, kill enemy Y. It's a game of patience and persistence. In short, it's a challenge, but not a fun game by any stretch.

It pains me. I'm so triggered right now
Pachinko is what we have left. Thanks to Konami!
Well, at least Iga is making Bloodstained. That's something, I guess?
Meh, still not the real thing, but that's something i guess.
darkstar100x wasn't mighty no.9 developed by the creator of megaman
Ben Sell Bloodstained's kickstarter campaign is more constantly updated, and I honestly have more faith in Iga. It's called Igavania for a reason.
Awesome review dude, I never played any of the Castlevania series but I 'll defiantly be taking a look into it now. Not to mention the music sounds amazing! You mind telling me the theme that started at 9:30, cause I'm a sucker for good video game music!
@KyonGivesYouFacepalm
No, that's my cousin.
this was uploaded on my birthday thanks johnny!!!
Beat the game today, took me about 4 hours, 2 of them on Dracula.
Took me a while to remember the stair trick so I could stun his 2nd form.
This review made me smile, specially when you say about the dificulty. :D
Hey johnny whats the name of the song you used at the end of the video???
I think I've got a japanese copy of one of the Snes Castlvania games, not exactly sure which 1 though
@madman18able i know its essentially the same console, but Super mario 2(japanese) is not an nes game because it cannot be played on the nes, therefore, if you want to get technical, its NOT an nes title.
I can see what Johnny meant when he said he hated his 2011 self. XD I didn't think too much of it when I first saw videos of this era.
Does anyone know the name of this song that plays at 9:29?
I tried Super Castlevania VI on a Emulator on a computer in middle school, and know I love it
My favorite is Boris Karloffice!
But one time, when I played this game, I reached Death with the Water and... completely overshot my target and got destroyed. That was embarassing!
^-^'
i hv a question. i own this game on the wii's virtual console. the game works just fine, it's just that the music plays like its in slow mo. is there a way to fix tht?
