This review is the reason why I love Johnny and why I'm subscribed to him. He understands a good game when he sees one, and when he disagrees with something, he actually takes time to express why without any real bullshit. Here, he did explain that the game was really big, and might be for those with great patience, which is something i do agree on. Still, Ocarina of Time is my favorite Zelda game of all time, and Johnny can pretty much see why, even if he doesn't agree with others calling it the best Zelda ever. Kudos Johnny, I look forward to your next Zelda marathon!
Virgil O'Reily Looking back, though I still enjoy this review because of Johnny's honesty and how he still respects everyone else's opinions of the game, there are a few things I don't agree with. One is Link himself. He mentions that he couldn't relate to him at all, but I don't think that was the purpose in the first place, but rather that we can place ourselves as Link because he's the silent protagonist. Isn't that the purpose of a silent protagonist? The second is the music. While most of the dungeons themes are atmospheric, the rest of the music is pretty enjoyable, like Kokiri Forest and Saria's Song. Finally, his critique on the item's supposed limited use come off as more nitpicky. Eh, but still, I enjoy this review overall.
***** actually just because you a silent protagonist doesn't mean you can't relate to them. Just look at the wind waker that Link doesn't talk, but through his reactions and facial expressions you can tell what he is feeling and easily relate.
KidSnivy69 what I meant to say was that Miyamoto intended that we place ourselves over Link so we can experience the adventure. But I do get what you're saying so it's fine
I appreciate how this guy brought up actual legitament complaints about OoT and didn't just shit on it for looking bad or being overrated. Ocarina of Time is my 9th favorite game of all time and I don't like to see it get hated on for no reason. But this man brought up real problems with the game and glorified what the game did right. Thank you for that. :)
If you think his only points were that the game looked bad and is overrated, youve never listened to him talk about this game. Think you're just a bit blinded by nostalgia. He brought up half an hour worth of legitimate points.
@@YTWgamer I agree, complaining about the dungeon, story, and combat structure is not complaining about looks or its overall reputation. He mentioned looks once at the beginning in a jokey comment.
I feel like the gaming community keeps Ocarina of Time on its pedestal, not due to merit or out of the game holding up well when compared to current adventure games but, as a gesture of respect. Even though better games will continue to be made, none have yet been as influential to game design or the industry as a whole as OoT has been. Even though I think it has inspired a few negative tropes in games, you can't deny its influence.
I can always respect this game's impact not just for Zelda; but any video games in general. Same with Final Fantasy 7. While they're not my favorite, I can always respect these games and had an good time.
There's no disputing Ocarina's influential status and how amazing it felt to get into a 3D Hyrule but I think Majora's Mask is a far, far superior game. Very few, if any, games have used time mechanics in such a clever and detailed way. Ocarina, in comparison, is very...vanilla.
***** If you have a good amount of experience with the game and have beaten it a few times, then yes, 10 sounds about right. But if it's your first playthrough and you only use walkthroughs as a last resort, I could see it going up to 20.
Not only that, but he failed to justify a lot of bullshit LTTP did, things that you would assume Egoraptor would hate (due to his Castlevania 2/Metroidvania opinions). Needing an item, which I have no idea that I need and no idea how to get, to beat a boss is bollocks.
MaddBadgerr What really blew me off was his Z-targeting rant. It was needed to adjust to the 3D environment and then he goes on saying it needed to be a top-down view like LTTP and I was thinking, "You mean like 2D?" The Z-targeting was masterful for the 3D environment so you can move the camera directly onto the enemy and you couldn't ask for anything more than that when adjusting for 3D. If it went like LTTP, you couldn't move Link side to side in facing the enemy and it wouldn't have worked well with the added dimension.
'There's normal view, then there's ATTACK MODE! and this alters how you view and interact with the game!' Well, yes Arin, and this is bad because...........? *silence for two years* Besides, just because you can see everything or almost everything at once in most rooms of LTTP, doesn't mean that you're able to focus on everything at once. Unless you're superhuman, and I know Arin's not because of his 06 playthrough (i know that game's shit and hard to predict/control, but it's nowhere near as hard as it seems looking at him and Jon play it), his Shadow TH playthrough (that game is EASY, he looked like he was playing with half his fingers missing), and I've heard he's a bit incompetent at Wind Waker too. He's entitled to like/prefer/hate whatever he wants, but if what we saw is his justification, its crap. It also contradicts his preference for knowing what to do and how all the time, because LTTP is terrible in that regard, where OOT isn't.
I'm with the crowd who really loves Ocarina of Time even nowadays. Granted it's in no way the best video game ever made and it's very simplistic compared to more recent 3D Zelda games but I think the game (for a gameplay and story standpoint at least) aged remarkably well. (And No I don't have oot nostalgia goggles because I didn't play oot till June 2013)
***** Yep. There is truth to that last sentence. :) I love all Zelda games (minus those dreadful CDi games) but 5 of my personal favorites are Link to the Past, Wind Waker, Twilight Princess, Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask in that order.
8:55 - 9:10 That's my biggest complaint with the story. Why should I, the player, care about what happens when the HERO OF TIME HIMSELF doesn't care what happens?! Seriously. How am I supposed to empathize with this character when he just stares at everything with a blank face?! There are SO many questions critical to Link's character development that the game never bothers to answer! Such as: -How does he feel about being the Hero of Time? -Why should he care if the Great Deku Tree dies? -What will happen if Ingo continues to run the ranch? -Why is Ganondorf's rule such a bad thing? The only people he had a huge impact on were the Zoras. It never feels like anything's at stake (aside from the Sacred Realm which, again, we don't know why Link cares about) so the emotional impact is fairly minimal.
Twilight Princess improves on link's emotions, but not my much. That would be Skyward Sword actually got it right and actually went the distance. Then Hyrule Warriors came and how actually cared about the story? It was boring, lame, cliched, and straight out uninteresting.
The Gorons were being harvested and eaten by Volvagia, the Kokiri Forest was ravaged by monsters, Kakariko Village was haunted, the Marketplace looked like a nuke just hit it, and Ingo had taken over Lon Lon Ranch and abused Malon and the horses all because of Ganondorf. The Zoras were not the only ones hit by Ganondorf's rule. Also, Link has always been kind of character you have to imagine what he is all about. Its not like Link from ALTTP was so deep either-in fact he was probably even flatter.
Ocarina's world is really barren and open by design, unlike FFVII which was always supposed to be a very crowded urban game in Midgar, so it wouldn't be as interesting unless they made massive changes to the world. 3DS remake is perfect imo!
I don't know what it is about your reviews, Johnny, but I've seriously watched this about 10 times and I still can't get enough of your review style. Keep up the great work. :)
Actually, I thought of another way to describe Link being a mute besides calling him a piece of wood. In all honesty, he's more like a puppet. just doing what he's told without question. Hell, he doesn't even know any of the people he rescues, but he does it anyway, even though he has no obligation to do so. See, this is why people like Wind Waker Link more than Ocarina of Time / Majora's Mask Link. Wind Waker Link actually reacts to pretty much everything, and thanks to the games graphics, we can easily see that. Some of his reactions are just hilarious!
Aye, WW Link had a lot of charm and you definitely felt his emotions at times. The "I'm sorry Grandma, but I have to do this" when he leaves Outset, or the "I can't fucking believe I'm doing this" when he's about to get launched into the prison for the first time.
Lithium Flower That's what i'm talking about! WW Link shows emotion, which makes him pretty relateable. But OoT Link does not, which makes him seem more like a puppet than an actual person. A good example of OoT Link not reacting like a normal person would is after Ganondorf runs off to catch Zelda, we see the camera zoom in towards his face, but all we see his his default expression.
Keegan Cooldown He seems more like a robot because he's doing impersonal tasks just to collect trinkets, whereas in Twilight Princess he does things like save a child.
I feel kind of bad for the later Zelda games after OoT. When released, they aren't really looked highly upon by fans since, compared to OoT, apparently, it's not as good. Or at least to compared to Majora's Mask, which I think is much better than OoT in every way. But I still feel Wind Waker and Twilight Princess are worthy successor to the N64 predecessors, since they improve on most things that were a detriment to what the N64 couldn't do due to its limitations. Having a more relatible Link character, more unique worlds or characters, dungeon design. Say what you will about Twilight Princess, but at least it did basically everything more definitively than Ocarina of Time in terms of presentation. Like yeah the intro is slow, but it picks up after it ends
Oracle of Games I am actually the opposite. I feel sorry for Ocarina of Time. Many people accuse it of being overrated, primarily because many fans think of it as an upgraded version of A Link to the Past, it had an empty world, and basic combat. Now while I do agree that Hyrule Field was too big for its own good (with successors like Majora's Mask and Twilight Princess improving upon that foundation, in my opinion), I don't think the other criticisms are that fair. This is the first 3D Zelda game, and even for its time, the enemy designs were all really varied and some enemies like Dark Nuts, Iron Knuckles, and Stalfos really show how difficult the combat can get at times. And in terms of it being like A Link to the Past... I don't think that is a bad thing necessarily, but I do think it is different in several ways. The layout of the dungeons is much more varied than A Link to the Past as genius as those designs were (and still are). The Forest Temple had complex puzzles like the arrow puzzle, showing off how puzzles can really work in 3D. Link's journey as hero is explored a lot more in Ocarina of Time. And while you do get similar items, I think that the Megaton Hammer and elemental Arrows add a lot to that raster of already awesome items. Besides, I think that a lot of the items in A Link to the Past should remain staples like the Bow, Boomerang, and Hookshot. Apologies for the length of this message. I just thought I would explain why I feel more sorry for OoT over any other Zelda game (and I actually like TP and MM more than this game).
blowskiol I can understand that, criticizing it's flaws is a bit unfair to you, being as this is the first 3D Zelda game, but you have to understand that when replaying a very old game, there's always so much you can ignore, growing up, in terms of archaic designs. Age doesn't really matter, the flaws are still there. If more people like Egorapter and Johnny here acknowledged that and understood that this isn't the best Zelda game, then I think the other Zelda titles wouldn't have to be unfairly compared to Ocarina of Time. Minus Skyward Sword, each 3D Zelda from then on went and improved from the formula established in Ocarina of Time, and are thusly better Games
Fusion Victory And boy was I ever right! I think it is literally the best Zelda since Ocarina Of Time. The only downside I had with Breath Of The Wild is that (spoiler alert) the boss for the 4 main dungeons is basically recycled.
It's kind of cool to see how amazing that Ocarina of time re-release looks like because that's pretty much how the original game looked to my eyes when I was 8 years old in 1998, even though nowadays it sure looks a bit dated. Child's imagination is such a powerful tool (:
I loved this game, I actually played it the same way on the gamecube. I remember collecting the 3 elemental stones and thinking the game was over, but damn was I shocked when I found out I had basically finished the tutorial.
Playing the 3Ds version is just such a joy! I don't care how long time it takes to run across the field, it just looks so amazing. I especially love the details on Links tunic and his weapons! That hylian shield just has incredible detail on the 3Ds!:D
Darn right about that. Anyone who says OoT is perfect are either blinded by nostalgia or just hearing how perfect the game is that they agreed on. They just don't think straight enough as well as Johnny or ExoPander has.
If anyone's wondering why Link can't swim normally in this game, it's revealed that Hylians have a natural tendency to float. This also holds true in Twilight Princess. However, Link's abilities in Twilight Princess are more improved. In that game, he can use his sword while being weighed down with the Iron Boots and the Zora Armor (which is what it's called in Twilight Princess) during underwater sections. Horseback combat was introduced at the cost of Link losing his invincibility while riding Epona. Twilight Princess also makes Bomb Arrows an actual weapon instead of a glitch. There's also the Hawkeye item that turns the Hero's Bow into a sniper's weapon.
The 3DS version is undoubtedly the superior version to me. It looks better, controls better, is more accessible, has the Master Quest, and a bunch of other stuff. Overall great game, but I prefer Majora's Mask.
My favorite thing about Ocarina is how it manages to balance being triumphant and somber. It's about going on a heroic adventure, but it's also about a child being forced to grow up too quickly. Its main story isn't anything spectacular, but the overarching theme of loss of innocence, and how it portrays that theme through gameplay elements, always sticks with me. It's definitely not a perfect game, but it came at the perfect time for me to become one of my favs.
I have to agree that there is very little story to OoT, but I don't think Zelda has very been about the story. It's all about the experience and the atmosphere.
That would be fine if not for the fact that there's way too much dialogue in this game. If the game wasn't going for story, then it wouldn't have so many cutscenes and so much dialogue.
I agree with you, Johnny. I love Ocarina of TIme. No Tunic/No Heart/No Shield runs are fun and stuff... but if you can do that, then there is no challenge. My favorite game in the series has to be Wind Waker. I put so much work into Wind Waker and even traded my Smash Wii U for the HD version. I've got to say, it's the best game in my book, (My opinion. Not saying it's the best for everyone. So if anyone is reading this, take that into account and don't be a dick.) in the Legend of Zelda series and I'd love a 3DS release. (And yes, I am well aware it's probably never going to happen. So no need to try to rub that in my face, either.) Sorry if it seems a bit rude, but you know how the internet is.
Wind Waker is one of my all time favorites too. I think it's because it's one of the first Zelda games I ever played when I got it in 2002-3. Along with Oracle of Seasons and ages.
I wasn't a fan of Majoras Mask. Not to say it probably wasn't a good game. It gets mad recognition. And for good reason. I just can't do the 3 Day Limit. Yes, I know of the Song of Reverse Time, but it's still there. It nerve racks me.
I don't like it because of the time limit I can't play any game if the whole game has a time limit that you can prolong its like having a gun pressed two your head that will fire at six if you don't find the combination to the safe for me
This is one of my fave Johnny reviews. It's got such a nice atmosphere, even more than usual. Probably cuz the Ocarina of Time ost is playing in the background.
A dictionary will tell you how to pronounce "ocarina" but I'll go ahead and break it down for ya anyway: Oc--as in "oc"topus a--as in "ah" ri--is "ree" na-- is "na" Also, walking backwards is the fastest way to travel on foot. :P
I think the fandom's love for Ocarina of Time is based on their experience with the franchise, basically situational. If this was your first Zelda game, or first 3D one, and haven't tackled the later ones yet you'll consider this game to be quite the breathtaking experience. If you have tackled the later games before this you won't completely get the hype, which appears to be what's going on with you here. Still surprised how Sheik didn't get into any onscreen action in her debut game. I guess the fandom just really likes the idea of Zelda having an alter-ego that's basically a medieval ninja. And Sakurai and the rest of the Smash Bros dev team thought a medieval ninja would be perfect for a fighting game.
I also recommend the Master Quest version of the Gamecube release. While the Young Link dungeons can take some getting used to, they provide a fun shift of challenge. The Adult Link temples are also significantly easier in some spots - the Water Temple is a cake walk because the way everything is arranged. By the way, the main thing that always made the Water Temple difficult is that there is a point where you pick up a certain key. From here, there are two doors you can use said key on. If you use it on the wrong one, the rest of the dungeon is mind-numbingly difficult because it's unnecessarily difficult to find the next key to unlock the other door. However, IF you pick the other door first, the rest of the dungeon is unbelievably easy. For me, it was the difference between four hours of backtracking the "hard" route, and less than one hour bee-lining through the "easy" route.
Got the game recently on 3DS, it's pretty good but I don't see how people see it as the greatest Zelda game. In my opinion I think Wind Waker is better albeit a bit too easy.
+ThatOneShyGuy I recently got the game on the 3DS. No nostalgia towards it, and I consider it to be awesome. Go watch AVGN to actually learn about gamrs that haven't aged well.
ThatOneShyguy The 3ds version is the exact same game with better graphics and control. And I heard the water temple was nerfed for the best. Other than that, after comparing the old and the new one, it's exactly the same.
A lot of Arin's criticisms are actually legit and anyone giving him shit for his video are just butthurt nostalgia blinded fanboys. Could have he presented them better, meaning without the clear sense that he had a bone to pick with OoT because it's the most popular game in the series? Sure. But that doesn't stop him from having a point in a lot of his critcisms.
@@okagron Oh, is that how it is? So we're the butthurt fanboys for disagreeing with some of Egoraptor's points, and you're not a butthurt fanboy for going off on people for disagreeing with ya boy? Damn. Sure told us.
@@okagronDid you ever watch him play the game? He couldnt z target basic enemies and had the hover boots on the whole game after he got them hes an idiot 🤣
3 things that make OOC such a great game for me are: 1. The use of music as a gameplay element, which was thematic, neat and kind of innovative at the time. 2. The explaination and establishing of core elements of the Zelda mythos, like Link being the rightful wielder of the aspect of courage, Zelda the aspect of wisdom and Ganondorf the aspect of power (I think the villain being the rightful wielder of part of the holy power was a neat and novel idea at the time). 3. The great dungeon designs. The Forest Temple and the Shadow Temple in particular really made you feel how things have changed from earlier dungeons in the game. The Forest Temple has this great, long set-up and is the first truely challenging dungeon when you play the game for the first time, while the Shadow Temple is the only truely "dark" dungeon and requires the hardest part of the game (defeating the Well dungeon as a kid) to complete. Great game overall.
Crono I wouldn't say so. It definitely doesn't get praised as much compared to Ocarina of Time. I haven't seen a single top ten list with Wind Waker at no 1 but I've seen many top ten lists with Ocarina at the top. And if its not number one, it probably isn't far behind. I can understand why you may think that though. Every single Zelda game has it's own mini fan base that claims their Zelda is the best.
Lord Raven I've checked a handful of sites, and UA-cam videos. On average it lands around the 4th-6th range. Some lower than that and some a bit higher. I won't doubt that the game has been getting more fans over the years but I'm not sure how that would be incredibly overrated as you put it. It's all opinions I guess. I mean I find Ocarina of Time overrated but many seem to agree on where it's placed on the list.
This game is my fondest gaming memory. It blew my FUCKING MIND as a kid. Playing it now it seems a bit quaint, but, fuck.. As a kid coming from the Saturn with arcade style games, this felt like a never ending epic. Masterpiece.
I always thought Termina field/the Great Sea was WAY more interesting then Hyrule Field. Like, SRSLY?! There is NOTHING there! Sometimes a bunch of grass or a farm! Termina field has holes, enemies, and most importantly: Easier to travel to all the important places. And the great sea has treasures, octos, islands with treasures, pirate THINGS with more treasure and you feel like you have an ADVENTUUUUUUUUUUUURE!!!!!!!!!!!!! thanks for reading my rant. -Duisjfuds Dinges
great sea was pretty boring until you got the ballad of gales or Swift sail (only in wii u remake of wind waker). termina field was ok but it felt a bit too small
I dont think OoT deserves all the praise it gets. Dont get me wrong, OoT is a good game, but i dont see it as 'teh best gaem evar'. Its got quite a few flaws, and most were fixed in the 3ds port, but it takes too much effort and time to play, unless you were PLANNING to play it. Its not a game that you can pick up every now and then and still enjoy. I enjoyed it, but not so much as to say it is the best zelda game. To me, that will almost always be the newest game in the franchise.
Yeah. Ocarina of Time is an very slow paste game because of how massive & empty the world designs of Hyrule takes and with nothing to speed up your movements like Pegasus Boots or Bunny Ears, it can take an very long time to complete. Not to mentioned the characters in the game are just one side dimensional with no interesting personalities. I did manage to beat the game and kinda enjoyed it. But man. It was chore and didn't nearly had this much fun as I could've. There are better Zelda games out there I rather play. Especially Majora's Mask.
I think Link to the Past was not put onto the Gamecube Zelda Collection disc, because they were making the remake on the GBA, and that would've been redundant.
And the GBA version was a new experience with a new game in it, and an extra dungeon. Master quest only really changed the dungeons, everything else stayed the same. As well as also having the original.
When I was a kid, and watched my friends play this game, I actually liked Navi's expressions, thought it was cool and it "belongs to the characteristics of the atmosphere", and the SOUNDTRACK... mhua magnifique
Nagisa Hazuki It wasn't just the marketplace. Before each Temple it shows you the devastation of Ganon's rule (the Goron imprisonment, the freezing of the Zoras, etc.)
It took me until the 3DS remake to play OoT, and while even then it was still called the best game of all time... I can't agree. It's a good game, a good Zelda game, but there are others in the series I like a lot more overall. I can see why people absolutely love it, but today it simply has its god-like status due to the nostalgia.
I think Ocarina of Tine withstands the test of time especially playing on the 3DS. That's honestly my 1st time playing cuz i heard it was amazing and IT WAS! I love it and i think generations to come will as well
@@ironspyder-db8fd LMAO not even close it's a fantastic game to this game. And you have to be moron to think otherwise or even thinking it's close to 'sHiT"

I have to say a large part to what this game meant to people, myself included, was nostalgia. There's playing the game, then there is being immersed and giving something seemingly "good" a meaning which you as a person can buy into and thus create an experience that is great. When I was young I bought into this, I felt I had a stake in the world I was brought into and I'm glad I did because this game is special. Johnny is absolutely the man and he is absolutely fair, just wish he could have experienced this circa 98 when it came out. The story is so much more deep if you're able to visualize it that way. What a great game hands down. Thanks for the videos Johnny we all enjoy them!
An awesome game for the Nintendo 64. It is such an amazing game. So many good memories with this game. Ocarina Of Time and Pokemon Stadium 1 were the first two games I ever got for Nintendo 64 on Christmas of 1998. This game was the first 3-D Zelda game to ever be released. It was a mind-blowing game when it was first released. The music, the gameplay, everything about this game is a pure masterpiece. I love this game with all of my heart. I remember when I first played this game when I was 3 years old I automatically fell in love with this game I also remember I was so excited when I first defeated the boss in The Great Deku Tree, I was so excited. I beated this game for the first time last year, when I did I felt like I completed my childhood game. This is my favorite game of all time and it will always be my favorite game of all time. :)
For what it is, it's amazing. No longer is it an exploration game, but more of an RPG. Comparing it to A Link to The Past, you see that it's VERY different. In ALTTP, you're told what to do for a short time. Like typical RPGs, Ocarina takes you on a tour. In Ocarina, you pretty much pass through roadblocks to reach more roadblocks.
Nintendo64Gamer64 While it`s not my favorite game it`s pretty good, I just didn`t like it as much as Majoras Mask, Wind Waker HD, or A Link Between Worlds. (Those are the only zelda games i have played, I`m new to the francise)
If the button layout in the Ocarina in the GameCube or Wii ports are annoying then just use Y, Z, or X. They all function as C left, C down and C right respectively meaning the only C stick function you'll have to worry about is C Up which is not used a lot
Rusty Shackleford Nope. I've played very few Nintendo games. I just got a Wii U recently but never ownded a Nintendo console. I'm playing through the Metroid Prime series now.
i think it can be a good thing to some extent... for exemple: glitches and halfassness aside, i decided not to play sonic boom because the characters wouldn't shut up. those snarky one-liners had me annoyed even though i was only watching playthroughs of it.
junior D. A Link To The Past is DEFINITELY a harder game. most zelda games now, if you continue to play them, are easily completed. Unless you hit some dumb puzzle like the water temple that you just can't get past. The first 3 Zelda games are legitimately hard. If you don't have the physical dexterity to win, you just... won't. It's weird that games used to be like that. A physical challenge.
I agree with you orcanie of time has an spectacular music my top 3 orcania of time song's are song of stroms, lost woods, and requirem of spirit, in the other hand hyrule field... well I don't like this song that much
Ganondorf is kind of pointless as Ganon in human form, because he does not act very much more human. Besides the way he acts, he is also some freak of nature. Pretty funny about the "desolate marketplace." Though that's probably where the majority of the Hylians lived. The Gorons (captured to be eaten), Zorras (frozen), and Kokirans (town captured by monsters) were also hit hard. Sarai was Link's childhood friend / romance (that never was). More than just small talk there. N64 is the one to play before they gutted the Fire Temple music for being "too Muslim." It's called artistic license, avante gard.
The reason that Ocarina of Time's story set up similarly to A Link to the Past's is because originally the development team wanted to make a 3D version of ALttP. I forget the reason, but they ended up deciding to make a new game. Also, the zoras are different because they are now ocean zoras, the old design are river zoras. This is explained in Oracle of Ages.
"when I first got my GameCube nearly ten years ago." huh, that seems a little late to get onto the sixth generation of cons- wait. this video is ten years old. fuuuuuuuuuuck.
Wow. I mean...wow. This game really fucking holds up. In my opinion, this is about as close to perfection as a game can get. I played it for the first time in 2004 when i was 8 and i remember being blown away. I checked out every website that was connected to this game, loving the official artwork, even guides that people were kind enough to load up. Then i lost my gamecube. 12 years later, i bought a gamecube and the promotional disk and...wow. Playing it again, i felt the same joy i felt back when i was 8. Sure, the game felt a little dated to me when i replayed it, and i could pick apart things wrong like the story and such, but no other game (Super Mario 64, Sonic Unleashed, Kingdom Hearts 2 come in kinda close) can blow me away like this one. Even today, games have trouble matching it's excellence. I proudly give this game a 10/10.
To be honest, I don't consider OOT to be the number 1 best game ever (My favorite game is Super Smash Bros Melee tbh) But as someone who hasn't played it until 2013 on 3DS and later played the original on an emulator, I can definately say that the game holds up very well!
I agree, I played the 3DS version and it really does hold up well. While it may not be the best game ever, it certainly is an *excellent* example of 3D game from the 5th gaming generation that managed to preserve the essence of a traditionally 2D franchise. I mean I still find it so interesting how Nintendo was able to make this game so consistent with the 2D Zelda formula.
Gabe Mewell The Field is way too huge The story is so goddamn bland despite focusing so much on it Many of the dungeons overstay their welcome Barely any exploration and any exploration you _can_ do isn't that rewarding minus the Big Goron sword The combat sucks really bad. _All_ you do is Z-Target on the big dude and wait for a million years and then they expose themselves , rinse and repeat.
Excellent review, I enjoyed the game as well, but the sluggish movement of Link, the vast desolate land of Hyrule, and the dungeons with constant backtracking really hurt the pace of the game and make it feel like a chore at times. Its the reason why even though I have fond memories of the game, I've only ever completed it once. Though I do want to go back and play it again for old time's sake. I also agree that Link to the Past was better. A smaller game world and Pegasuses boots help it to cut a much quicker pace. What a masterpiece!
Think ur being too harsh on the story progression and dialogue. I'd say the player gets a great sense of each characters personality. Ruto's a frighteningly sexually matured brat, Impa's a tough cookie with motherly instinct, Daraunia is a macho goron who cares about nothing more than the well being of his people etc....heck, even a minor characters like Mido turns out to be more than just a lil jelous prick, as Links 7 year absence proves he's deep enough to realize Link was an ok dude and he actually kinda misses him. As for the dialogue, I'll just say this; not every line of text has to be zomg so deep and meaningfully poetic. I love my FF series, but alot of that kind of jrpg dialogue tries way too hard to invoke emotion in the player...alot of it is just plain corny.
Is Johnny the only one who could say, "I don't like Ocarina of Time," and not get his video disliked and spammed with hate comments? This is a legitimate question...
There's a keyword to Johnny's review style: respect. He understands fully why people love OoT, but he calmly explains the flaws he noticed. Respect can come from both directions
11:25 if you look carefully at the ending screen, you can see that link still has the triforce of courage in is possession. It suggested that it because of that, they were able to gather sages and convince the king of Ganon intentions. And why he was executed as seen in TP be the Sage led by the King
Hard to believe this review is almost 7 years old. This marathon was one of the best ones.
Don't mind me, just rewatching the entire johnny vs series!
Agreed.

Amen Ninja
***** I get that and I understand what Miyamoto want to do, but it led to characters being kind of bland

"There were tonnes of franchises that bit the dust when they made it into the 3D"
And the first game that popped into my head was Bubsy 3D...
I think Bubsy bit the dust when they first thought of it
Virgil O'Reily "It's a cat.. and ya put him in a shirt... and BAM! it's bubzy!

I would quit right after cat was mentioned.
Bubsy never had any quality in the first place.
Sadly, Earthworm Jim also bit the dust in 3D.
There's no disputing Ocarina's influential status and how amazing it felt to get into a 3D Hyrule but I think Majora's Mask is a far, far superior game. Very few, if any, games have used time mechanics in such a clever and detailed way. Ocarina, in comparison, is very...vanilla.
***** compared to other dungeons in the series they're both lack difficulty
*****
to be far people complain more about how long and boring the water temple is rather than it difficulty
Agreed, the Water Temple is more tedious than difficult.
The Water Temple is my all-time favorite Zelda dungeon, especially in the 3DS version. I love completing it every single time.
Majora's Mask used Ocarina of time's engine. So basically a copy of oot, so they could play around with the story a bit
"A normal playthrough should take 6 to 7 hours."
Buddy, what the HELL are you smoking?!
Zelda's plan actually works and the game is finished by the third dungeon
Toa Matoro
I think 10 hours would be a more appropriate answer.
*****
If you have a good amount of experience with the game and have beaten it a few times, then yes, 10 sounds about right. But if it's your first playthrough and you only use walkthroughs as a last resort, I could see it going up to 20.
I can finish the game in a 3 heart minimal item run in under 6 hours. not that hard.
Antonio Briceño
Good for you then.....?
This. This is how you review Ocarina of Time with some comparison to Link to the Past.
Egoraptor, take notes and stop ranting for 31 minutes straight.
Don't remind me. I respect his opinion, but god was it nitpick central.
It was needed to adjust to the 3D environment and then he goes on saying it needed to be a top-down view like LTTP and I was thinking, "You mean like 2D?"
The Z-targeting was masterful for the 3D environment so you can move the camera directly onto the enemy and you couldn't ask for anything more than that when adjusting for 3D. If it went like LTTP, you couldn't move Link side to side in facing the enemy and it wouldn't have worked well with the added dimension.
'There's normal view, then there's ATTACK MODE! and this alters how you view and interact with the game!'
Well, yes Arin, and this is bad because...........?
*silence for two years*
Besides, just because you can see everything or almost everything at once in most rooms of LTTP, doesn't mean that you're able to focus on everything at once.
It also contradicts his preference for knowing what to do and how all the time, because LTTP is terrible in that regard, where OOT isn't.
but he says almost all the things egoraptor says
and yet ego gets cruciified(he even knew it would happen too)
15:37, god I love Johnny's editing style.
***** While I do love Ocarina of Time, I would say that I love Majora's Mask more. That's just me though.
***** Yep. There is truth to that last sentence. :)
I love all Zelda games (minus those dreadful CDi games) but 5 of my personal favorites are Link to the Past, Wind Waker, Twilight Princess, Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask in that order.
It's aged well... For an N64 game at least.
Even when games age terribly they're still great or lousy depending on your past experiences.
+Nathan Eskin It aged terribly. Even Bubsy is better than Zelda

11:12 Actually, that theory is mostly confirmed/supported by twilight princess, with the scene featuring Ganondorf's execution.
Such as:
-How does he feel about being the Hero of Time?
-Why should he care if the Great Deku Tree dies?
-What will happen if Ingo continues to run the ranch?
-Why is Ganondorf's rule such a bad thing? The only people he had a huge impact on were the Zoras.
It never feels like anything's at stake (aside from the Sacred Realm which, again, we don't know why Link cares about) so the emotional impact is fairly minimal.
This is a game. This is a time when games gave 2 shits about stories and focused on GAMEplay.
Hi Sora
*****
Fair enough, but my point still stands that Link is an incredibly weak character.
I'm surprised he didn't mention anything about "Dead Hand."
yeah I ish he would have. Wall masters and redeads too.
Rated E for everyone
Imagine an Ocarina Of Time remake akin to the FF7 remake.
wouldn't be as spectacular, but could be interesting.
yeah it's called 3ds. don't need any more.
Ocarina's world is really barren and open by design, unlike FFVII which was always supposed to be a very crowded urban game in Midgar, so it wouldn't be as interesting unless they made massive changes to the world. 3DS remake is perfect imo!
@@zachb4561 love the 3DS version. It’s perfect in every way.

sean z I agree with you! But my overall favorite Zelda game is Twilight Princess.
For a heart piece or something (one quarter of heart). Gripping.
Baigandine L I don't understand what your trying to say here. Could you re-phrase this, please?
I have a feeling that Breath Of The Wild will change all that...
Brennan Martinez and it did
Fusion Victory And boy was I ever right!
Man the box art and music of this game just brings me back to the most tranquil place in my mind.
I recently got the game for my 3DS. It's freaking beautiful
@ThatOneGuitarGuy 98 same here for my 3DS XL but I already beat the game like over a year ago. I fucking love that game enjoy it really fun.
I got it for n64 😀
It was good. But not all that great honestly. I'll take any Zelda games over OoT.
I really prefer the GC version because of the much smoother analog stick
I loved this game, I actually played it the same way on the gamecube. I remember collecting the 3 elemental stones and thinking the game was over, but damn was I shocked when I found out I had basically finished the tutorial.
I'm with John, even with the improvements made in the 3DS port, this still took twice as long as it did for me to finish ALTTP.
Playing the 3Ds version is just such a joy! I don't care how long time it takes to run across the field, it just looks so amazing. I especially love the details on Links tunic and his weapons! That hylian shield just has incredible detail on the 3Ds!:D

Aren't all reviews for this balanced?
And iron boots is an item that you can put on one of the buttons. No more pausing the game to put on boots.
Same.
zelda has been a ninja and a pirate :0
Harvey Gough your profile picture sums it up perfectly
Even though they're not technically the same Zelda.
Johnny's videos never cease to please me. I've rewatched all of them multiple times and I still love them.
Personally, I prefer the wind waker because it has much more charm than a lot of the other Zelda games. And Toon Link is also my favorite Link.
Great review! Classic game. It used to literally keep me up at night. Not bc its scary but I would constantly think about how to beat it haha
So no need to try to rub that in my face, either.)
Sorry if it seems a bit rude, but you know how the internet is.
Wind Waker is one of my all time favorites too. I think it's because it's one of the first Zelda games I ever played when I got it in 2002-3. Along with Oracle of Seasons and ages.
+sydney Maldonado plus at the time I was only 7 so I didn't enjoy ocarina & majoras mask cause I was so young
I wasn't a fan of Majoras Mask.
Not to say it probably wasn't a good game.
It gets mad recognition. And for good reason.
I just can't do the 3 Day Limit.
Yes, I know of the Song of Reverse Time, but it's still there. It nerve racks me.
I don't like it because of the time limit I can't play any game if the whole game has a time limit that you can prolong its like having a gun pressed two your head that will fire at six if you don't find the combination to the safe for me
S March Preferences are a thing, sorry if others don't match your own.
This is one of my fave Johnny reviews. It's got such a nice atmosphere, even more than usual. Probably cuz the Ocarina of Time ost is playing in the background.
A dictionary will tell you how to pronounce "ocarina" but I'll go ahead and break it down for ya anyway:
Oc--as in "oc"topus
a--as in "ah"
ri--is "ree"
na-- is "na"
Also, walking backwards is the fastest way to travel on foot.
+William Carrasco
It was a good game for the time, but it hasn't aged well. People are just blinded by nostalgia.
+ThatOneShyGuy I recently got the game on the 3DS. No nostalgia towards it, and I consider it to be awesome. Go watch AVGN to actually learn about gamrs that haven't aged well.
+Crono isnt the 3ds version a remake? Im talking about the original.
ThatOneShyguy The 3ds version is the exact same game with better graphics and control. And I heard the water temple was nerfed for the best. Other than that, after comparing the old and the new one, it's exactly the same.
Crono Better graphics and control don't make it the same game. Those improvements make it a much better game xD

Yes, they sorta are different, yet the same. It's extrapolated upon in Oracle of Ages, oddly enough.
Take notes Arin, this is how you review OOT despite liking ALTTP more.
VN Reader haha ikr
A lot of Arin's criticisms are actually legit and anyone giving him shit for his video are just butthurt nostalgia blinded fanboys. Could have he presented them better, meaning without the clear sense that he had a bone to pick with OoT because it's the most popular game in the series? Sure. But that doesn't stop him from having a point in a lot of his critcisms.
God, that video killed Egoraptor for me.
3 things that make OOC such a great game for me are:
Uh, Shadow Temple actually sucks and it's possiblity the worst dungeon design in the game. It's incredibly linear and basic.
Eh. Not an fan of the Forest Temple. Way too big & mazy liked.
Hahaha! "...boy, is he in for some shit!"
This game is good, but definitely overrated. I enjoyed the other games like Wind Waker more than OoT. But that's just my opinion.
Wind Waker is overrated.
When was the last time you looked at a best zelda game list ? wind waker has become incredibly overrated as of now.
I Can't Think of a Good Name Strange...whenever I look through the comments, Wind waker pops up far more frequently than OoT.
This game is my fondest gaming memory. It blew my FUCKING MIND as a kid. Playing it now it seems a bit quaint, but, fuck.. As a kid coming from the Saturn with arcade style games, this felt like a never ending epic.

there wasn't too much idle moments for me on the great sea. and at times i was only sailing around, there was the soundtrack... oh my, what a song...
alright, i get that, but hyrule field had NOTHING!!
great sea was pretty boring until you got the ballad of gales or Swift sail (only in wii u remake of wind waker). termina field was ok but it felt a bit too small
isn't that a positive?
Im A Cat Meow Meow Isn't being small good? It's not that small, to be honest.
KillerDragon jeez calm down not everyone has to like the game
First Zelda game I ever finished... I still remember my sister cheering me on to beat Ganon
Good times
15:40 Johnny: (sighs) You're not going away, are you?
Kaepora Gaebora: FUCKIN' REAL.
Johnny: O_O
I think Link to the Past was not put onto the Gamecube Zelda Collection disc, because they were making the remake on the GBA, and that would've been redundant.
because master quest wasn't reduntant...................
GenmaTheSamurai It... wasn't... It was a nice way to experience the game again with a higher challenge.
And the GBA version was a new experience with a new game in it, and an extra dungeon. Master quest only really changed the dungeons, everything else stayed the same. As well as also having the original.
This game is so well known that the auto closed captions known to capitalize the proper nouns from the Zelda universe.
Oh Johnny, will you ever review Twilight Princess?
Sometime this year, he said
Really!? YES!!!!!!!
...I just came a little.
+Ice Cream Dragon Along with another Pokémon marathon and Kingdom Hearts
+Cody Orvik Say what!? lol
+Cody Orvik Huh...
Almost 10 years later, and I still enjoy these reviews.
Same. Been a fan since 2013
It takes way more then 6-7 hours to beat the gane.
tell that to speedrunners
marmike300
I was saying if you didn't speedrun. I know how fast it can be done in a speedrun
***** No you didn't specify.
ARBITER WARPIG I should have then. Did Johnny?
I don't think so.
23:15-23:30 Honestly, that's how I feel about A Link to the Past
Love these vids dude. I'd love to see you do vids on Twilight Princess & Skyward Sword. I'd like to see how you analyze those games.
When I was a kid, and watched my friends play this game, I actually liked Navi's expressions, thought it was cool and it "belongs to the characteristics of the atmosphere", and the SOUNDTRACK... mhua magnifique
"The game everybody couldn't shut the fuck up about."
Haha, so true. Great video!
People are so immersed in OoT's Characters and atmosphere.. And then they find out that they only have to save a f*cking marketplace.
Nagisa Hazuki It wasn't just the marketplace. Before each Temple it shows you the devastation of Ganon's rule (the Goron imprisonment, the freezing of the Zoras, etc.)
I know. I just wanted to tease a bit.
Honestly, I enjoy Ganondorf's rule over Hyrule, I don't have to deal with Peaheats.
Nagisa Hazuki Majora's mask does a much better job of showing how evil affected the entire land and creating a connection with those living in it
I'm personally not that into the majority of Ocarina of Time's characters, to be honest.
lol my friend says it is called oh-CAR-ena. *facepalm
*facepalm*
that sounds like an English butchering of a Mexican word.
every time I feel nostalgic I cant handle it and wanna cry, this game makes me feel this
It took me until the 3DS remake to play OoT, and while even then it was still called the best game of all time... I can't agree. It's a good game, a good Zelda game, but there are others in the series I like a lot more overall. I can see why people absolutely love it, but today it simply has its god-like status due to the nostalgia.
please do the other LoZ games!
I think Ocarina of Tine withstands the test of time especially playing on the 3DS. That's honestly my 1st time playing cuz i heard it was amazing and IT WAS! I love it and i think generations to come will as well
Nope. It's shit and only hipster geeks like it
+Jessica Black stop
It is shit
@@ironspyder-db8fd LMAO not even close it's a fantastic game to this game. And you have to be moron to think otherwise or even thinking it's close to 'sHiT"
@@jessicablack5913 LMAO not even close it's a fantastic game to this game.
Yep.
But it could have been soooo much better. Imagine a gameplay like skyrim in oot. That would meet the standards for lttp
Nintendo64Gamer64 While it`s not my favorite game it`s pretty good, I just didn`t like it as much as Majoras Mask, Wind Waker HD, or A Link Between Worlds. (Those are the only zelda games i have played, I`m new to the francise)
TheCrafterMaster I'm new to it as well and I'm considering getting WW HD. So how is it in your opinion?
I'd love to see you do one of these for Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess.
+flyingplatypus4889 My 2nd favourite zelda game but
HOLY SHET LOOK AT TIS I GOT BLUE RUPEEEE IT IS 5 RUPEEEESSSSSS YEAH
Link may be a piece of wood but he still has more of a personality than Edward Cullen has.
That's not a hard thing to do
True.
It's good to know he has more personality than a manikin head.
If the button layout in the Ocarina in the GameCube or Wii ports are annoying then just use Y, Z, or X. They all function as C left, C down and C right respectively meaning the only C stick function you'll have to worry about is C Up which is not used a lot
Interesting how Nintendo's iconic characters all tend to be mute, or at least borderline mute.
This game honestly seems like it would bore me a lot.
You've never played it?
Rusty Shackleford Nope. I've played very few Nintendo games. I just got a Wii U recently but never ownded a Nintendo console. I'm playing through the Metroid Prime series now.
i think it can be a good thing to some extent... for exemple: glitches and halfassness aside, i decided not to play sonic boom because the characters wouldn't shut up. those snarky one-liners had me annoyed even though i was only watching playthroughs of it.
How is the music not catchy?
Ikr? Gerudo valley is something that I can alway hum :-)
“You’ve met with a terrible fate, haven’t you?”
Wrong game.
+Heath Wilson (Sir Ike, Hero of Crimea) no, right game
Essa Man
That quote is from Majora's Mask. Not Ocarina of Time. Therefore it was the wrong game he quoted.
Man. This review is going to be 10 years old in (as of typing) four days.
Best game of all time.
blew my mind back then
Master Quest makes the Forest and Water Temples fun.
I know this is old af but...
HA!
15:42 What does the owl say?
He say: " I can beat you"
No catchy Music!? Johnny, the kokiri Woods and The lost Woods theme are so far imbedded in my brain, that it pushed out my ability to do math!
alttp was harder for me( i didnt beat it)
i didn't either. i was playing it along with a lets player whos not around anymore.
JazGalaxy
it is? huh never really all that hard for me. now if you're going for 100% completion, then ya it will get a little difficult.
i got stuck after going to the dark world for the seven (i think) temples, the enemies are waaay too strong
i've picked it up again, and now i've done dungeons 1,2,4 and 3 in that order.
Really? Hyrule Field, Gerudo Valley, Song of Storms? None of those are catchy to you?
I agree with you orcanie of time has an spectacular music my top 3 orcania of time song's are song of stroms, lost woods, and requirem of spirit, in the other hand hyrule field... well I don't like this song that much
favorite zelda soundtrack in my opinion, there isnt a song that doesnt come to mind or i cant hum out
Lost Woods! All day everyday!
He is a green ginger and I thought the ones that were ghost white with freckles were bad.
A well deserved 1mil views
Damm right.
"when I first got my GameCube nearly ten years ago."
huh, that seems a little late to get onto the sixth generation of cons- wait. this video is ten years old.
fuuuuuuuuuuck.
Ong😭
6 to 7 hours seems VERY suspect. I feel like the game is closer to 25 to 30 hours on the first playthrough.
I too barely made that deadline for the goron sword…..think I had like 3-4 seconds to spare
To be honest, I don't consider OOT to be the number 1 best game ever (My favorite game is Super Smash Bros Melee tbh)
But as someone who hasn't played it until 2013 on 3DS and later played the original on an emulator, I can definately say that the game holds up very well!
Xcalibur64 REALLY?
Xcalibur64 nothing it's just an odd choice imo
Ironically enough...Sonic Unleashed is my 2nd favorite game of all time. Kingdom Hearts 2 is my 3rd.
Ocarina of Time is basically the Citizen Kane of 3d gaming.
No I say that belongs to Mario 64
I would disagree. It has many problems.
+Supah Man The Zelda one I mean.
Like.......? Want to elaborate on that?
Gabe Mewell The Field is way too huge
The story is so goddamn bland despite focusing so much on it
Many of the dungeons overstay their welcome
Barely any exploration and any exploration you _can_ do isn't that rewarding minus the Big Goron sword
The combat sucks really bad.
Yep.
This great game still holds up to this day it's also one of my favorite Zelda games!
do zelda twilight princess one day PLESE
Nailed it.
Amazingly well put. Exactly my thoughts on this video.
Is it really that big a deal?
That's my IndohNintendo !! XD
Is Johnny the only one who could say, "I don't like Ocarina of Time," and not get his video disliked and spammed with hate comments?
This is a legitimate question...
He never said he didn't like it, he just doesn't like it the same way others do.
124 people saw your comment and realized they hadn't disliked the video yet.
