I can't believe it. The clothes started to get wetter and wetter after the spin cycle and I didn't know why. The machine started throwing no drain codes tonight. Found this video and then a bunch of really nasty lint and some old wrappers and stuff in the filter. Mine is a Kenmore but this video still fit the bill. Thanks GE for the customer support!
Thanks for this and other maintenance videos. They are short and concise without ads.
Hi TooLooze, We are so happy to hear that the videos are helpful to you. Sometimes less is more! Have a great day!
Thanks for sharing, Sarah! We are happy to hear your good news! Jill with GE
This video saved our butts! I kept calling around asking for quotes for appliance repair when our washer stopped working and the prices were a bit outrageous for a repair shop to simply check what the problem was, not even actually fix it. Started browsing, found this video, and followed these steps to fix it right away. Thanks for posting!
I'm so glad this helped. Natasha! Sure is good to save a service call - thanks for letting us know! -CC
Can confirm that "Load Rebalancing" over and over was fixed by cleaning out my pump filter. Thank you!
Thank you thank you thank you. Because of your video I was able to drain my front loading Kenmore (nearly 10 years old) and clean the filter (every 2 months? Yikes)
I removed over a gallon of standing water, and the filter was full of hair from me, and two dogs.
I kept thinking "this will never work" It worked!!
Thanks so much for this! We've been using a Laundromat for weeks because we thought the repairs were going to cost a fortune. Instead, I managed to removed the sock that had somehow wedged its way in there and it didn't cost me a cent. Thanks again!
Sir Hugh Barst, so glad that this video was helpful! Those little things have a way of making trouble for any washer! Thanks for your comments! - Sheree with GE
Perfect video. short, simple, to the point. Nice checklist at the end.
Hi, Monique - Thank you for your inquiry. I am happy to direct you. If your washer does not have an easily accessible pump, without the removable panel, service may be needed. Our GE Consumer Service technicians are well equipped to resolve an issue such as this. Appointments may be scheduled on our GE Appliances website under the support tab. Thanks again for reaching out to us.
My wife has had her machine for a year now and asked me if I would help her to check the drain filter. We're in our 70's and what is easy to who ever designed and built is not so easy to an elderly couple even with50-years of D.I.Y. experience. #1.... The machine in the video is installed close to an inch higher than ours. This made all steps in the removal that much more difficult, even to the point of trying to get a small drain pan in place. Perhaps the install directions provided to company's that sell your products should come with minimum installation height requirements. #2 ..... If it hadn't been for this video we never would have figured out how to pull the drain funnel down. My wife was going on your written manual instructions until she got frustrated and came to me for help. My wife does not use a computer so for those in America still trying to live without computers or internet it might be beneficial to clarify your written instructions. #3..... The pump filter was still factory tightened and my wife found it impossible to loosen. I myself spent another 3-5 minutes trying to turn it counter clockwise until it finally broke loose. However, the space that you have allowed is so small that I ended up scraping my hand in the process. Another inch in width and length would greatly facilitate access.
Hi, Rachel Spies. Thanks for reaching out to us. Please take a look at your drain hose to ensure it is properly installed and not kinked or crimped. Also, make sure the drain in the household plumbing is not clogged. Hope this helps!

So glad you have a reference like this available here on you tube! So useful and convenient (no idea where my manual is at this time!) finding your info online was so very helpful! Thank you!
We are so happy to hear this video helped you! Please feel free to send us your model number and we will be happy to send you a manual if you'd like one. www.geappliances.com/ge/service-and-support/contact.htm?icid=GEARtopnav-contact JW
This video was most helpful--thank you! I'm hoping that solves the problem, and I'm confidant it will (haven't run a load yet). Like others here, I had a ton of dog hair in my filter, after washing their blankets. I was winding up with wet clothes at the end of the wash cycle and a drain cycle that went on forever, presumably putting more wear on the pump.
A couple of notes about my cleanup: I had a hard time turning the filter counterclockwise to remove it; a few light taps with a hammer got it unstuck. Since I had run a few loads after the clog occurred, there was about a gallon of water behind the clog. Even though I had a bucket set up underneath (my machine is on a pedestal), it ran into the pedestal drawer handle and into the drawer below (fortunately only had tools under there). I would suggest that if you have a pedestal, construct a way to direct the water from the pump filter compartment into a large container so that it bypasses the pedestal drawer. A piece of old tubing or even a dustpan would do it. Because my pedestal drawer can't be opened all the way due to being in a tight space, I couldn't pull it out to dump the spilled water. I used a bulb baster to remove the bulk of it and then sopped the rest up with a rag. BTW, the water in the video was a lot cleaner than what you might find in your machine!
Hello Patricia, we appreciate your comments and taking the time to post. Glad this video helped! -SF
This was very very helpful. My husband and I just got done doing draining. While draining we used shop vacuum and it’s work. Thank you for sharing.
Our system wasn't draining properly, after some Googling I found this video, we opened the filter pump and there was a brick of fabric and dog hair and other crap in there... it was super clogged, had no idea that we had to empty this. We almost called in a repair guy, but this fixed the problem. Thanks!
Steven Tyler We are so glad you found our video first, Steven!
Steven Tyle .
Steven Tyler just pull off the drain pipe and BLOW LIKE HELL!!! I used a clean wash rag so my lips didn't touch that nasty hose. After a few weeks of "blowing" treatments, my duet drains fine. But you have to make it "gurgle" . I'm sure a shopvac in reverse will work better. Blows the crap back and breaks it up to drain, it's usually just clunked up lint. Try air compression before buying expensive part. Trust me.
I found a lost ring in mine once.... ruined but was nice to finally figure out where it went
KevKani340, You are welcome! So glad to hear the video was so helpful. Thanks for sharing! Alison with GE
Thanks a million to everyone who takes the time to post money saving tips on this site, our Frigidaire front loading washer wasn't going into the final rinse and spin cycle and the problem was that the coin catcher was preventing our washer from going to the final rinse and spin cycle, we found the coin catcher full of gunk and coins just like the video shows, thanks to all who share their expertise and it goes to show that all people aren't greedy like some and don't mind sharing what they know, much love to you all.
I followed the exact instruction as per the video and it has resolved my problem. Thank you! All good now.
Thank you for the video. It helped the dryer as well since the clothes weren't soaked
Thank you so much I have the samsung washer and I didnot know how to clean the filter...these videos are so much help :-)
Love how perfect this video is clear perfect instructions. All videos should be this good
Thank you for your feedback, Ryan. We're glad this video helped, and hope future videos will be of assistance to you as well. Thanks for choosing GE Appliances! -NC
Thank you so much . My Samsung Washing Machine was giving "sod" error code. It was also taking too long for the complete wash. This is because a lot of dirt had got stuck in the pump filter. This Video helped a lot. :-) :-)
Update to previous comment. Perhaps a warning about the smell of the water coming out! Wow! ;-)
I hadn't cleaned out that filter in the almost 7 years of owning our washer, and it was pretty nasty. Definitely putting a regular cleaning of that trap on my home maintenance schedule!
Again though, thanks for the video. It did the job!
Worked like a charm! Thank you. :)
Thanks for the awesome video. Dislikes must the the maintenance guys or the people that already bought brand new washers😂😂
Omg The process took me about five minute to less to complete. Thank you for your helpfulness Xoxo gossip girl
Now you know where to come to first ;). Glad we could help!
thanks Rodger your video is right on
Thank you for helping me fix my washing machine
Thank you! All fixed now
My front loader has an issue with a queen size blanket keeps saying load rebalance, Put 1 pair of carhart overalls in does the same a load of bath towels will also make it go into rebalance mode. Never had a washer with so many problems. For being new this washer sure has issues, cleaned all filters leveled washer and rechecked several times manually rebaleance loads same issue. Never had a washer with this issue before!!!
Hi Hugh,
We're deeply sorry to hear that your washer is having so many issues with balancing and understand how upsetting this must be. We recommend disconnecting power for a few minutes then restoring power to see if that solves the problem. If that doesn't work, then we would recommend service.
You can schedule an appointment by calling 1-800-432-2737 or schedule online at spklr.io/6051YaYx. All the best. -MH
Thank you, I put a paddling pool under mine help my hand so it didn't drip down then opened it very quick so all the water shot out, do not open it quick straight away if you have a small water catcher it comes out so fast x
I have opened it up and yes there was some money in there. Took it out, put the filter back on and pressed start again but it still stops and the clean pump light still comes back on.?? What else do I do. Thankyou
Thanks for this video...this video helped me when the washing machine was not draining and leaving giant pools of water across the floor...I removed the pump and with a pair of grips to loosen the hose clip, removed the hose to the filter...I found inside several metal bracings that go into the cup surrounds of bra`s and hairclips...also hair bands etc...those with teenage girls, beware !!!
I have a different brand of washing machine, but this video is much clearer and useful than the one from memory machine. Txs!

You’re very welcome, Marijo - we’re glad we could help! Again, we’re always happy to assist if you have any other concerns or questions. Best wishes! -SG
This pump filter is so much better designed than mine. Once I stop renting I'm definitely going to have to find a filter this practical! I think GE sells in the UK?
Hi Anto - Thanks for your post. I’m sorry for any issue you are experiencing with your washer. You should not have to drain the filter out after each use. If you have not yet done so, please review our video, “Front Load Washer Out of Balance”, for some extra tips. Please let us know if further assistance is needed. Thanks, Jill with GE
Front load washer out of balance
I have a GE front loading 8 cycle heavy duty Deluxe quiet machine. Don't know the model. And I'm curious since I have a leak at the front left hand side that it might be something like this. But I do not have that small pump door. There is panel that goes across the bottom of the machine probably a foot tall. Is this something I would remove in order to find a filter pump?
Hi. I have the LG steam front load washer that is throwing a "check filter not draining" error just before the spin cycle. If I press pause then play button it will continue on with the cycle until the final spin where it will throw the error again.I do the same thing (pause, play) and it will finish off to the end of the wash cycle. The filter was cleaned out and I checked the drain line (watched it drain into the sink). I'm thinking that mechanically the pump is fine but electrically it may not be. Or does this sound like more of a circuit board issue? Any help is appreciated.Thanks.
Worked perfectly!
I did clean the drain pump had a few things in it nothing major but still the basket will not tumble will not spin is there a reset button somewhere?
Thank you for this great video!
Shernel Mardini You're welcome! We are so happy our video helped! Have a great day!
What if there is stuff down deep behind that, will it come forward during the next wash
Shallow dish > 5 gallon bucket I was trying to use before this video. Thank you!
Hi we have a aproximately 2009 front loader GE that 4x now has leaked from the back some how underneath. The water is very foul smelling like sewer water. It happened right at the beginning of the cycle. What could be the problem and the repair cost?
I am trying to clear a filter on a whirlpool awz475 turning anti clockwise but it will not release - any suggestions!
Thank to for this video it was very helpful. Did anyone else notice the water that was released to have a very bad smell? Also I can’t seem to get the filter door back on, it becomes loose from the bottom. Any ideas?
Hi, how often do we need to clean the pump filter? Thanks
Thanks soo much this video saved me 😂 I nearly cried trying to open the door and it was locked
I have a GE Front Loader Model GFWR4805F0MC, that also likes to stop mid cycle. I found a leaf inside my drain pump housing. The washer now pauses at 37 min during a normal wash cycle. I restarted it. It started to drain at 35 minutes. Good news is the machine is not pausing numerous times like before. I believe it was doing it 3 times per load. Does anyone have any other ideas what I can look for?
This was extremely helpful. Thank you for the upload. I was able to safely and properly drain my machine. You are the best
Hi, Carol Pedley. Thank you for your post. We regret we do not have information on the Whirlpool brand. You may want to reach out to their company website for further direction. We are always happy to help if you have any questions on GE appliances or products!

Found a dryer sheet caught in there. a TON of water was leaking when turning the filter..no way to catch the water so i just kept a few towels there . I see now why it smelled a little "sewery".. Hoping that fixes the error We've been getting lately .Thank you for the vid!
Quick question, the pump filter access door won’t come loose! I’m using a screw driver, but regardless of how I twist, wiggle or pull it just won’t come off! What should I do?
Followed the instructions and was disgusted by how much crud I found. Glad I saved money though. Thank you!!!!
We are glad you were able to take care of it. LM
Our GE WCVH640J1WW starts to fill with water for about 30 seconds and then starts draining for a few minutes even after the water is gone and then just sits there. I knew about the access door on the front but didn't realize it was a filter, I thought it was just a drain. I removed the filter and cleaned lint and 2 pennies out of it and put it back in but still no luck. Water starts to fill for about 30 seconds, then drains for a few minutes and then just sits there doing nothing. Any ideas?
helpful video. also on the plus side, i dont need to mop my laundry floor anymore
Yashamaruism, we are glad the video was helpful. Please let us know if you have any further questions.
How often should you clean this ?
Hello, my front door washing machine drain pump run without laod (makes griding noise) however, when i want to drain water through it, it won't run at all. Do you think the pump is faulty ?

What if my washing machine doesn't have a small opening of the pump, how to clear the problem of clean pump?
Hi, trickshots2t. We’re happy to help. Please take a look on our GE Appliances website under our “Support” tab. Here you will find some helpful tips under “Frequently Asked Questions”, “What do I do if my washer is leaking water?” We hope this will offer resolution to your issue.
How the heck are there coins??? How do the coins fit in the washing machine holes
Reading from the comments below regarding cleaning the pump after use, my washer doesn't seems to be out of balance but I have to clean it after use because of water hold up and it starts to smell with in a day. Any suggestions or advice on how to fix it?
+Jen Cruz Hi Jen, it is possible for odor to occur inside the washer tub over time. Using the appropriate amount of detergent with each load and using HE detergent can help. GE recommends cleaning the washer tub once per month to keep the wash basket fresh and clean.
For models with a BasketClean cycle:Use the BasketClean cycle and 1 cup of bleach or a commercially available product manufactured for this purpose. GE recommends Tide Washing Machine Cleaner for best results. Repeat if necessary.
For models without a BasketClean cycle:Run a large Heavy/Cotton wash cycle with no items in the wash basket and 1 cup of bleach or a commercially available product manufactured for this purpose. GE recommends Tide Washing Machine Cleaner for best results. Repeat if necessary. Tide Washing Machine Cleaner is available locally at most grocery and retails stores.
How often should we clean this filter .
My Hoover throws an E03 error code that tells me to do this.
oh that's easy! great video
lazylarrimores We're glad you found our video to be of help to you!
I love you GE♥

Bethany Howard Awesome news, Bethany - thanks for sharing!
So if I have to drain my washer from the front after almost every single wash, what is the issue? Drain pump? If I don’t empty it then my clothes start to smell musty. Also….is there a way to put a hose inside the front hole and leave it open all the time to drain from the hose into the drain in our floor? Help!
I have a GE front load washer and it is out of balance I redistributed the clothes but the last few washes it's still vibrating hard. I got this washer around 2004. My washer does not have the water pump in the front. Where else could this be located? Any help is appreciated

Can you tell me how to get a rubber gasket that goes around the knob that you turn to get the filter out?
We’d be glad to assist with your concern! Can you please clarify the model number of the washer, here or with a private message over our social media (such as Facebook or Instagram)? With that information, we can certainly look into this further.
You guys made that look easy I have it in there tight but it leaks what am I doing wrong ?
Hi, Meagan! It's true, things like this always look easier in the video. We have a helpful article here: spklr.io/6051Yi1b
We recommend making sure the filter has been screwed back in straight and is not crooked. If you continue to have trouble, please send us the model number of your washer in a DM on Facebook or Twitter. - JB
Hello GE; thank you for this tutorial video. What is the recommended frequency for this pump filter clean out procedure?
Thanks again,
I’m trying to figure out what could be causing a HORRIBLE odor from my GE profile washer. I’ve ran NUMEROUS basket clean cycles with bleach in the prewash like instructed by washer prompts and 5 cycles using afresh tablets but it’s not improved at all. It’s stinking up the entire house and even neighbors can smell it! It’s HORRIBLE. I keep the door open after washes and take clothes out right away. I did have the boot seal replaced but it appears to be sealed properly.. what else could be causing this and what can I do to resolve??? Please help!
Hello,
Thank you for reaching out to us. We're sorry to hear you are experiencing an odor from your washer. We understand how problematic that would be, and we'd love to help.
We recommend cleaning the pump filter if possible. Due to the design of the front-load washer, it is sometimes possible for small items to pass to the pump. This can restrict the draining process and may also contribute to odors. On most models, the pump filter is easily accessible for cleaning. You can view your unit's owner's manual on our GE Appliances website by searching the model number.
Below are links that provide more information on the causes and solutions to address odor issues:
Front load washer: spklr.io/6057W8PR.
Top load washer: spklr.io/6058W8Pr.
We hope this helps! Take care, SH
The filter on my washing machine is too close to the ground to fit a tray underneath. How else can I catch the water?
designed and built by a Chinese company--Haier, who now owns GE appliances.
How to access the filter for GE WSSH300G0WW? It is one solid piece with no access door.
Hello Okichigal - thanks for contacting us. Not all of our front-load washers have the pump filter access, including this model. If it is not draining, we recommend contacting GE Factory Service at 1-800-432-2737. We hope this helps!
I just cleared our drain, but there were only a couple sewing needles in it. Would that be enough to cause water all over the floor with every wash?
Hi Erica,
Thanks for reaching out. Sorry to hear about your washer leaking, we're sure this would be frustrating. If you've not done so already, take a look at the following article to see if it helps matters: spklr.io/6056cbqi

Hope this is helpful for you.
We're here if you've got questions or concerns in the future. -MS
I see. Thx for replying me.
What if the front is a solid piece with no access panel or bottom panel?
Some don't have pump filters on them but if you sent me the model number I could look it up for you!

The model number you provided is a for a Whirlpool washer so our suggestions would vary. I would try the troubleshooting tips in the Use and Care manual copied below for your specific issue. If the washer doesn't have a pump filter the cause may be something entirely different. If the troubleshooting tips don't work, you should try and get in touch with their customer service or service team for further assistance. www.whirlpool.com/digitalassets/WFW72HEDW/Use%20and%20Care_EN.pdf
Thanks so much this video helped me I thought mine was broke

Hi Anita - thank you for reaching out to us. If you are experiencing the error code CLrFLtr on your washing machine, please see page 29 of your Owner's Manual for additional troubleshooting tips. We hope this helps! Thanks for choosing GE Appliances! -NC
I'm desperate and in need of help from anybody who has had the problem I've got with the lint filter lid. The lid itself will not screw on properly, it's a little crooked. I've checked the grooves for any damage and lint, but it's in mint condition. It simply won't screw on right, which causes water to leak from it. Anyone had this problem as well? It's a Matsui machine for reference
How do you get rid of mold in the pump filter? My washer constantly stinks because of the mold in the pump filter.
Hello-Thank you for reaching out to us. We are sorry to hear you are having some concerns with your filter unit and would like to help. Could you please send us a private message with your model and serial number? Look forward to hearing back from you. All the best.- DM
I think my pump filter is clogged however, there is no access door at the front of my model which is a front load washer, GE model number GBVH5140H1WW. How can I access the pump filter?
Christine Cole, We are sorry you are having this issue with your washer. If there isn't an access in the front you will need to contact GE Consumer Service. They can be reached by calling 1-800-432-2737. Thanks so much for checking with us. Have a good day!
My washer has a strong leak with the pump filter clean and screwed in to lock, still leaks. Why? 7:30p 4/29/2024
Copy and paste this troubleshooting link in your browser. spklr.io/6059oQif
We know you said the pump filter is screwed in completely, however that could still be the cause of the leak. Unscrew the filter and then slowly tighten it and see if that helps. If it was put back on crooked, it could still leak. If you still have leaking issues, please reach out to GE Consumer Service by calling 1-800-432-2737.
iv been doing this after every wash? how often?
Hi Andrea. Thanks for the question. The pump filter only requires cleaning if you have wet clothes after final spin, excessive vibration, long cycle times, the washer pauses or if the door stays locked with clothes inside. It is okay if you cleaned it more often than just under these circumstances. Thanks much, RF
is it normal to have water left in the filter area after each wash?
Hello David - thanks for asking. Yes, it is normal to have water in the pump filter. You will need a pan to empty it into when you drain it. Thanks for checking with us!
does anyone experience having to driain the filter out after every use? a quick comment would be appreciated need to wash my clothes asap!!
The water in my aeg front loader bypasses the washing machine and spills out the drainage filter below . Can someone please put me in the right direction
Ethan, we recommend you contact the manufacturer of your washer for assistance regarding this issue. Thanks. AS
Having a hard time putting filter tray back. It keeps turning and turning doesnt lock. Washed a load and water spewed out everywhere and of course our warranty has expired

hmmm i wonder how small objects can fit through the small drain holes on the drum
Only very tiny objects can fit through the small drain holes, Hays. Most small objects will have filtered through the pump. Thanks for posting! -SF
thx ;)
My problem is the gasket has stretched and i can no longer screw closed the wing nut, it just keeps spinning.

ps...if you need to remove the whole pump...remember to make sure the small electrical plug is put back into the pump housing !!!
Mine has no small box to open at the bottom. So where is mine?
Oh my washer is next level. At the middle of the drain pipe thats where everything stucks at so i need to open the whole washers cover and unscrew all the pipes to get these out deep inside

What if the machine doesn't have an access door? How do you clean one without the access door?
Mo Jo than you don't have one
