Maybe one of the greatest jams I've ever heard. Basie fan from the beginning, the 30s, and Billie's Bounce with Coltrane's solo is maybe the best. Johnny Griffin, however, absolutely kills it. But the tempo here and the genius of all live is something I'll come back to again and again... My brother plays stand-up bass. I'm send him this NOW! Thank you for posting... (And Basie is unmatched. His sweet silences are unmatched.)

Mr. Basie a jazz legend!

I went to my first Basie concert in 1958 (at the Royal Festival hall, London). I never cease to be amazed to find more great musical moments Basie has created with so many wonderful musicians and combinations of groups. What has Basie so special that so many musicians wanted to perform with him?.

re hommefriday. I saw and heard the great Basie Band on the same tour. It was in the now non existent ST Andrews hall in Glasgow. When this lot shuffled onto the platform and went into one of their head arrangements., I thought my whole body was going to dissolve. It was one of the greatest experiences of my life. I spoke to the bass player outside. These guys have no airs and graces , just fantastic human beings. Did not shout Henry but "Coker" ! One has to realise that Basie's real genius was in knowing the right tempo for every tune. Music dies if the tempo is not absolutely right.

Stood 4 feet away from The Count, just out of his field of view to be mannerly and respectful. Disneyland, June 1978-I think. Heard Al Green play the meanest T-bone solo ever. The set started with “Queen Bee.” What musicians these people were (are). The epitome of subtlety and kindliness in musicianship.

Electrifying performance by Basie & his fantastic men! I was among the crowd that went absolutely berserk. Two years later had the same effect, with the Pablo-stable of these marvellous Jazz artists. But this gig blew the top of the roof! Sweet memories of a bygone era that once was.... It's a great tribute to a master musician Bill Basie that all the wonderful musicians here are really trying hard to come up to awesome level of swing and creativity that he established in jazz through the decades. There is no doubt at any moment who's in charge of the rhythm section and the whole proceedings and Basie does it with minimal fuss and effort.
BTW, this delightful jam occurred in 1975 (July 19 to be exact) and NOT in 77.

I have been very fortunate to have experienced this incredible Jazz music. A huge loss for the current generation(s). YT is therefore a godsend for them to be able to access what great, inventive, passionate Jazz was/is all about. Enjoy & Cheers!
