I met both Ella Fitzgerald and Bill "Count" Basie on the same wonderful night at Small's Paradise in NYC's Harlem in 1960 when I was 8 years old. I always say that singing that one song at that jazz jam session with Basie playing the piano and Ella complimenting me afterwards was the night I became a jazz vocalist. We met many times after that night over the next 11 years until I went into the Army and on to Vietnam and they both were always kind and encouraging to me.
Cuando conocí a Barbara Straisand pensé que era la voz femenina más hermosa pero es que aún no conocía a Ella… simplemente me dejó boquiabierto por su gran talento y su maravillosa voz!
Absolutely and incredibly delightful. Of course ‘A Tisket, a Tasket’ was the first hit for Fitzgerald but this must be a Scat version of the song. Ella was a master of Scat singing that was first mistakenly performed by Louis Armstrong as he once forgot the words of a song he was singing. Female vocalists in the 1930’s and beyond were valued by their ability to sound like horn instruments (trumpets & trombones etc) and, as revealed in this video, Ella was one of the greatest in this art. Altogether a wonderful performance with the Count Basie orchestra, that was one of the leading Jazz bands of the Swing era. Thank you for sharing this memorable video. 👍🏻
Ella dropping scat lines perfectly in between the notes these stunning musicians are playing.....mind bending one of a kind performance ......guaranteed no rehearsal......
Back in 1979, for 12 minutes and 38 seconds, this venue in Montreux was the single best place to be in the entire world. Ella and Basie swinging the walls down. Sacred.
The young today have missed so much fantastic music! I have enjoyed all the era’s of music but the Count and Ella will always thrill me, along with their contemporaries of that time! There is nothing like this kind of jazz, for me!!!!
In Frankfurt hab ich sie live erlebt. Bald nach Kriegsende. Im ZELT - weil Ffm. noch in Trümmern lag. Nach dem Konzert im Jazzkeller - unter den Trümmer.
I grew up in Harlem New York in the 60s. All the old-timers would refer to them as Basie and Ella. My father with liquor on his breath would pick me up hold me in his arms scatting singing telling me how much he loved me. LOL
Ik zal een andere taal toevoegen. Wat een zangeres, wat een muzikanten, wat een humor, wat een plezier! I will add another language. What a great singer, musicians, humor and what a fun!
Watched her one night in a club on the Sunset Strip in Hollywood singing and having fun imitating a horn player -what a voice and a really never to forget wonderful experience.
There never was another like her, and probably never will be. So much versatility, creativity, spontaneity, playfulness .. it's impossible to grab hold of - in the English language ... or in any language. That kind of genius is not something that can be put into words!
Ella & Count deux Monstres sacré deux légendes du Jazz & du Blues mais heureusement que l'ont peut encore les entendre de nos jours c'est toujours un plaisir naturellement de pouvoir se remémorer des instants magiques et inoubliables
Amazing Ella. I was 5 y.o. when my cousin introduce her to me. After then, I couldn't stop learning and listening E;lla. I already had piano at home, then went to music school, started to travel at age 13 singing jazz. I was really lucky with all my teachers. Then college of music and conservatory. Ella the best of the best. Love you lady.

That horn section blew your hair back, I bet.
How did you manage to do that? I could imagine what it cost to bring them in!
