Lucky me was playing 3rd trombone in Basie's band on this gig ... I was in the wings mezmorized by Oscar Peterson every night of the tour ...I was 24 (an average player) and like a said a very lucky fellow to be there :O)
lrossmusic younwere in the band so you’re not so average I think
I was almost 8. You have many musicians' respect, Sir (well at least mine to have GOTTEN the gig in Prague no less!!!) and easy on the self-deprecation! Hope you stayed in that hotel with the strip club in the basement right near the Charles Bridge.
Lucky devil 😘 indeed🙏
Congrats to you. Must be a great memory.
Incredible incredible memories! You were very lucky 😁😁
Definitely a peak moment in human culture. How many more will we have?
That piano has definitely fulfilled its purpose.
This is classic jazz at its finest with Oscar being the royalty of the art.
T
Taktmedizinmänner Notenzauberer Saitenhypnotiseure ... . .. Danke 🌻:)
ANYTHING by OSCAR PETERSON! seeing him live one of the great cultural moments of my life. here, with bassist, PEDERSEN & THE COUNT in PRAGUE, exquisite! just to watch their fingers ...
Briljant Piano And Bass Performance.
"THE COUNT" IS SUCH A SOFT SPOKEN "CUT UP" WITH OSCAR. YOU CAN TELL HE JUST LOVES OSCAR BY THE LOOKS HE GIVES HIM AND OSCAR HAS SUCH LOVE AND RESPECT FOR "THE COUNT". I LOVE THEM BOTH! SYLVIA - FL- 04-03-2019
ChannelMaster720 and N.H.O.P. Is arguably the greatest jazz bassist in jazz history ; died far too young , heart attack.
@@loumcconnell503 I concur with you but would also have to include Ray Brown.
If only I could have been there in person
Fenomenal!

NHOP makes them both happy! Count B was the first to invite Niels to his band when he was to young. You can see On Niels face; he is among friends.
When you're a monster, you have no choice but to be surrounded by monsters.
Like a spring shower - all comes alive and is blooming in moments. To end as suddenly as it began. This audience in Prague were listening to something very, very special - and they knew it. There are simple ideas in these 37 minutes or so of such depth - melodic and rythmic - which are virtually the definition of music as a social experience. From loud city type music to spiritual longing - from brash youthful outbursts to displays of real expertise and creativity.
I enjoyed all these comments...even the one written in Spanish, in praise of the world's best guitarists💞
The drummist, was the late, Skeets Marsh, and the guitarist was the late, Freddie Green. I managed to extrapolate the article online. Cheers to everyone💖🎷🎀😘🙏
NHOP shows those D and G strings no mercy in that solo !
Wonderful performance! Bravo!
Oscar Peterson was a class act and a hard one to follow. RIP Oscar Peterson
I AGREE TO AN EXTENT, HOWEVER, I DO THINK ERROLL GARDNER WAS FABULOUS! SYLVIA - 04-03-1-2019
He was the only one speaking a language everyone could understand.
Such a great performance, love them both.
What a performance. Just witnessed a genius at work in OP. And what support. Absolutely outstanding.
Thank you, Monstres 🐒🐬🐒🌼🦕🦕🐳🐳🌀🌀🍃🍃🦎🦎👉👉
Brilliant. Cannot be bettered. Fantastic music. I thought I could play a little piano. I certainly cannot.
Same for me! 😪
Absolutely priceless.
First time I seen a sigh of relief from Niels after Oscars protuberances....... OP is overtly hardswinging here. Compared to - 77 and later, this is overwhelming. Such a intensity..... Jesus Christ...... 🤤
hearing oscar hum while playing his solos is such a neat experience!
Phenomenal !
I play like this in my dreams. Lbs
ME, TOO, MELVIN! SYLVIA - FL - 04-03-2019
Not even in my dreams...
Peterson pra mim é o maior pianista seculo. Bravo!!
A perfect show of two legends, but the bass player is not Count Basie (who was a great American jazz pianist) but a great Danish double bass player Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen
You need to watch the entire performance here. Count Basie is a part of this gig, sir.
WOWWWW!!!!!! I've never heard anything like this in my life. The last time I was amazed in this way was when I first heard recordings of Charlie Parker about 20 years ago. I wish I could have met the great Oscar Peterson in my lifetime.
God, NHOP could play that bass! Fantastic stuff - lovely!
NHOP was bass genius !
The junk that passes for music now
is truly appalling. Filet mignon vs.
three day old bologna sandwich
on white bread left out in the
sun on 98 degree days!
As Peterson once said ' NHOP didn't play the bass, he WAS the bass' As praise from Peterson, that is quite something.
Count Basie, the Zen master of the piano.
nice
Fantástico, o maior pianista de jazz do mundo e o igualmente, maior baixista acústico do mundo!!!
Whoa...the bass player is outrageously good and Oscar Peterson is...Yeah...he's Oscar. Beautiful playing by both.
Amazing!!! Some music seen on youtube is better than issued on records. Except Art Tatum, Oscar is the greatest of them all. Thank you for sharing this wonderful performance. I wish I could mark 1 million likes!
Amazing Composition
such a great performance. I'm shocked that there aren't any comments. Thank you for sharing this
Oscar playing a rare early 70's Petrof model I concert grand. Has 4 extra keys in the bass.

@@jol666jol Super, Einmalig !!!
Sublime
... Eine Sternstunde...
unvergesslich - unerreicht - wahrer jazz
I want someone to look at me like Count Basie looks at Oscar
Andrew OSborne this is like the best look you can get!
OH, BABY . . . I WANT THE SAME THING! A MAN WINKING AT ME ALWAYS MADE ME GO WEAK IN THE KNEES. LOVE IT! SYLVIA - FL 04-03-2019
The highest level playing is based on breathing. There is only one eternity. Makes gratified that I am the WBD .
Jestem przekonany, że OSCAR PETERSON & COUNT BASIE zagraliby równie genialnie np. Chopina!!!
This is so amazing...! THANK YOU!!!
Two most wonderfully talented pianists non of the like ever to be seen again, I’m so glad I was able to see their wonders in my lifetime, and didn’t they respect each other’s talents?
Philippe Richard
Merci.
An average trombone player? Lucky? I guess so. The Count with Oscar Wow. April in Paris? mmmm blew me away! I have the album Count Basie April In Paris,Beautiful horns.Nice to talk to some pros.Peace Mike.
I just wana play.
👏🏾👏🏾
Thank you for detailed credits. But there's someone missing: the guitarist, who was never pointed. Possibly the great Freddie Green, who played with Basie for almost 50 years. In 1974, him and drummer Butch Miles made part of rhythm section of the great Count Basie Orchestra. I was listening this beautiful music while reading credits, when my ears told me there was someone missing!
definitely freddy - heard his rhymic strides and knew it right away. First time you saw him here is at the very end when he left the stage w/ his guitar at the performance close.
Big Oscar Peterson 🐬
Peterson's tie is the star of the show.
NHOP sounds like he's in the next room. That is one distant bass sound.
szia szerelmem...
I cannot imagine that there is a pianist who is more technical and precise than this man. NHOP+OP almost similar names. Funny
NHØP + OP -> magic
Check out Art Tatum. OP’s mentor...
Mild sound!\(^_^)/
He could get around.
Einmalig ist die Ausdrucksķraft dieses wunderschönen klavierspiels.Katerina
katarina . . Well
23:00 at what point do you think, "I'm not playing fast enough."
Hoppaaaa, in those days anything was possible.
9:00 22:50...dammmnn
Lol It just came into my mind here that Basie was actually 69 during this performance....
Well done after Dubjec and Parlach. Jazz has the power to change ....whatever.
Who is on base with Oscar? Niels?
Yes. It's NHOP.
Unless he made a reverse Michael Jackson, thats not Butch Miles.
That Petrof better than Bosendorfer?
4:49
What a Concert. Pretty sure it's not Butch Miles on drums. Mabie Grady Tate, but it's definately a coloured dude.
mikebuddy1 correct. That isn’t Butch.
Steinway
PETROF piano.
lo mismo digo
Interesting how he’s sitting in a wooden chair, a la his countryman, Glenn Gould.
wood, the preferred material for chairs
Whats that tune at 2:16 ?
i believe it's body and soul
If you really listen to some of Niels, he is being a brat!! Just adds more to what he;s playing, it;s amazing.
Oscar is the Ayatollah on jazz piano
LOL! Best comment yet!
Could not agree more! The guru, the rabbi, the pope! But let’s not forget the ‘Count’!
The bass is lost in the mix.
What a shame, ruins the listening experience.
I'm afraid o'l Basie is out of his league.
Everyone was out of Oscar's league. But that's not to put Basie down. Different era, different player. Nobody played like Count Basie, because no one had the courage to do so.
@@Ronald60202 Agreed. Compared to Tatum or Costa, not even OP was in their league.
I recall Basie distinctly saying he could not play like the 'fast guys, like Oscar', and suggested how he created his own style instead. This one on the BBCTwo broadcast of Classic Jazz.
i recall Basie noted in the 1968 BBC broadcast "Jazz Casual" that he couldn't play like the 'fast guys like Oscar' but explained how he developed his own style instead.
ua-cam.com/video/Ke3W5DQ6U1U/v-deo.html
In this way, he didn't need to be in Oscar's league - and Oscar didn't need to be in his.
We are touched with greatness from them both.
Doesnt really matter how good either one of these guys is in comparison to the other. It's their sheer enjoyment that shines through.
I don't like Basie. He doesn't know anything.
