In other words, the years-old "we don't want rentals to kill us" decision.
Vergil is easily my favorite character to play as for one reason Complexity He is fun as hell and complex, but not too complex as to make the casual player feel that there's too much to deal with, like Dante can sometimes be like
One of my favorite aspects about Vergil is, of all the video game characters I've ever played as, he's the only one that genuinely feels like he grows stronger and more powerful with each game he makes a playable appearance in. In most games that follow up a character's journey, the character doesn't really feel much stronger, it just feels like they pile on more weapons and powers while also taking some away. But with Vergil, he mostly has all the same weapons and powers, it's just they get fine tuned and perfected with each new appearance and gets a few new abilities. That's not to say other games or characters don't do this, it just feels more clear with Vergil to me. DMC3SE establishes the base line for his controls and moveset, from the 3 hit combo he keeps in all of his appearances to his iconic Judgement cut which at this point is just as iconic to vergil as the Yamato. It's ultimately a fairly limited moveset, but those limitations encourage creativity in using his abilities and weapons to the best of their ability. DmC may be infamous for just how bad it is especially in story, but it does add things to Vergil that would become staples in his gameplay from here on. Aside from tweaking his overall control a bit and giving him more combos to work with, it also introduces the Perfect Judgement Cut which, while a bit clunky in its first appearance would go on to be one of Vergil's most valuable tools in other appearances. It also introduces the embedded sword mechanic and giving Vergil doppelganger which he would bring back in 5. And for all the crap DmC understandably gets, it is to this day the only game to give Vergil a proper campaign. Not much of a campaign, but still, it's something. DMC4SE is where Vergil really started breaking the games he appears in. That's not to say he wasn't cool before, he was just a bit more balanced in 3 and DmC, but here, he just snaps the game in half. Aside from once again improving his controls, this game perfected the perfect judgement cut, gave his summoned swords a bit more utility, and introduced us to the concentration gauge which is just the perfect way to incorporate Vergil's character into his gameplay. It also gave us Judgement Cut End which just gives the finger to any enemy in Vergil's way. And finally, DMC5 perfected Vergil's control. From the amazing combos that make each weapon feel like an entire moveset on its own, to the ability to use three perfect judgement cuts back to back, to his little teleport dodges which are the perfect flexing tool for finessing demons, to Judgement Cut End somehow being even cooler along with three other super moves that just obliterate whatever fool stands before you, to having one of the coolest looking Devil Triggers in the series. This Vergil is for people who want to feel like a god among men, he just erases anyone that gets in his path, and I wouldn't have it any other way. Playing each of these appearances one after another gives you this feeling like you're actually watching Vergil's journey for power and seeing him go from just a badass swordsman, to one of the most broken videogame characters ever in the context of their own game, and whether you're the one in control or the one at the other end of his sword, you will remember the power of this motivated son of Sparda
Excellent video as always. One small correction though: Dante's royal guard in 5SE is always clearly telegraphed. When he's knocked away after a combo, he'd flash red, say "Royal Guard," and begin slowly walking toward you instead of running or teleporting. Then and only then does he use royal guard, so that's your cue to stop attacking and let him approach. And even if you accidentally attack him when he's in RG stance, his reflect can still be dodged with a timed trick dodge. It's such a good boss fight man
A lot of people have made the DMC Reboot canon in their own way, by either having DMC Dante be attempting to copy mainline Dante, or by it occurring in a parallel reality. After all, the MvC games, and Street Fighter 5 have shown that Capcom has a massive gaming universe/multiverse. I'd love it if reboot Dante got re-introduced to the mainline series. Obviously his name would need to change, but that could simply be him using a pseudonym. Maybe reboot Dante would go by Tony Redgrave (like mainline Dante did in his early years)

Honestly, as you mentioned the fact how much lore behind Vergil "Burry the Light" covers I wish someone made an MV of that song using all the different materials from different sources to represent it well
Quick correction: The reason why vanilla DMC3 was harder in North America was actually because of gaming rentals, Capcom didn't want players to just burn through the game easily and then return it. The original version of RE4 also had its easy mode removed for America!
So is Woolie the new character added to the DMC Retrospective: Special Edition? Also: Vergil in 3 gets two remixed battle themes, which is at least better than DMC4 where he got nothing, and DmC where he might as well have got nothing. Also also: DmC: Definitive Edition does have one legitimately fantastic addition that I wish 4&5 Special Edition got, Must Style Mode. I’d love to see that come back honestly.
I didn't think I would ever hear Vergil described as "bringing forth his inner hot topic twink" or having his ass referring to "cake", but I guess here we are. Great video, I've been into DMC for a little over a month and I've already finished the main story for all the games (except 2 lol). I'll hopefully be catching up on more of your stuff on it!
Personally, I always saw Vergil breaking the game as him not holding back. I see Dante as having fun and not really trying so he is playing with his food and styling while going through the story where as Vergil is about ruthless efficiency so he isn’t messing around while going through the story. Dante could break game like Vergil if he wanted to but that wouldn’t be as fun.
Two small things to mention about your segment of DMC5 SE 1. Vergil's Trick Dodge has longer recovery and gaps in i-frames by default, BUT if you time the dodge just before an attack hits, Vergil can chain multiple Trick Dodges with no gaps in i-frames, much like Nero's Table Hopper. Except unlike Nero, Vergil can chain as many dodges as he wants lol. Great for building Concentration and DT as well. 2. When fighting him as Vergil, Dante counterattacks with Royal Revenge, not Royal Release. And on top of it being possible to dodge the reprisal with good timing, the slowdown when Dante activates Royal Revenge helps telegraph the incoming attack. In some cases, you can even use it to your advantage by deliberately activating Dante's Royal Revenge and attacking after dodging it (though I don't think Dante will be in hitstun).
"A testament to how well he was designed when he was first conceived all the way back during the Bush administration" Holy shit that actually made me realize how long it's been.
I honestly hope that if they ever update this, Lady and Trish get the same update scale as Vergil got. Like you said, Lady is a proof of concept, and could do with being fully realized
I love how he said at the end of the DMC5 retrospective that it might be his last DMC video for a long time, and then he did another one less than a year later.
16:09 Vergil does get his own battle themes, remixes of Dante's themes from the main game. Sure it's no bury the light situation but it's definitely his own. Also Vergil's divine hate is easily my favorite DMC battle theme. Also yeah i realized I'm 2 years late and you've probably heard this 150 times
I just noticed and I am immediately obsessed with the Jackpot scene. Not only did Vergil DEFINITELY try to hit Dante to stop him, Dante knew that shit was coming and dodged it just ending it with both of them playing off the sudden violence so smoothly.
@@bradleyreid4853 It's so obnoxious, idk why they thought Vergil constantly having to fight flying enemies on platforms that are like 4 feet across was a good idea
I actually used it as an advantage. I would jump off a ledge, devil grab an enemy, then use the downward sword slash attack to send enemies crashing into the abyss. Useful for harpies and wisps.

Aight you NEED to be made aware, as often as necessary, of the fact that 1hr+ of Vergil and DMC talk is a luscious treat for fans of the series. You have a way of working nuance into your delivery that prevents it from feeling like a copout and only makes me excited about the details you might've missed/skipped in your presentation. (e.g. your point on Royal Guard, which includes a special slowmo effect and is limited to the weaker version of Dante's gameplay for balance). And those 2 things are VERY praiseworthy.
When Nero was dying in Argus's lab, and Vergil's spirit spoke to him through the shattered Yamato, Nero heard a voice in his head. "What is it you seek?" Nero replied. "Power." "Then do as I have... and move your 'Shoot' button to a shoulder button.'" [ -Easy Mode- Charge Shot is now selectable ]
I learned recently that if you consecutively do perfect judgement cut, Vergil actually says Jackpot 😁 This especially is nice character trait that makes me love Vergil despite him refusing to say it in the end cutscene.
For avoiding getting clapped by Royal Guard release, when he says “Royal Guard” wait for him to strike than counter attack. If you do activate his release a well timed trick dodge will save you.
Now this was quite the video to watch, all about Vergil, I like playing as him myself and his theme, bury the Light.....SO FUCKING AMAZING! Casey that genius deserves a lot of credit for making it. Love it, another great analysis video on a series I love. No telling what will come next for devil may cry but I look forward to the next chapter.
I miss the downward slash attack that Vergil does as a follow-up to Yamato’s Upper Slash in DMC3. I wish they found a way to keep it in his later iterations.
I've never thought about remapping the summon swords to a shoulder trigger. I'm going to have to try that, also Vergil in DMC3 did actually have his own variation on battle themes with remixes of both Taste the Blood and Divine Hate
This is pretty good, I like these retrospectives because you explains mechanics I'll never be good at, but love to learn about anyways. Plus you're so passionate about everything you talk about it's hard to not want to listen.

If nothing else I want Casey Edwards to do all of the character themes for DMC6
ngl i can't imagine dmc without devil trigger and bury the light now, would be hard to get used to even if casey did it
If he doesn’t do all of the themes then at least let him do all of Vergil’s themes.
It's such a good boss fight man
The trick I love to call it *ROYAL DODGE!*
Despite how the fandom treats dmc reboot its creator seems to actually be fine with it and even embrace it at times, which I appreciate
i love the reboot
A lot of people have made the DMC Reboot canon in their own way, by either having DMC Dante be attempting to copy mainline Dante, or by it occurring in a parallel reality.
After all, the MvC games, and Street Fighter 5 have shown that Capcom has a massive gaming universe/multiverse.
I'd love it if reboot Dante got re-introduced to the mainline series. Obviously his name would need to change, but that could simply be him using a pseudonym. Maybe reboot Dante would go by Tony Redgrave (like mainline Dante did in his early years)
@@sev1120 100% wouldn't mind this. DmC Dante is not a bad character at all. It's just he looks like shit because almost every other character was written like shit
@@sev1120 for me dmc is just a fever dream dante had after eating a moldy slice of pizza and not having a functional toilet.
More than that. Itsuno REALLY likes the Reboot and actually planned to make a sequel.
‘’Sparda’s second favorite son’’
I can’t help but feel bad after that sentence
Me too, but I highly doubt he was second favorite
@@AR_1N He was given the yamato.
@@AR_1N He definitely was Sparda's favorite for sure, he was much more calm and composed, even as a child he was mature and knew the weight he had to carry ........ the simple fact Sparda gave him Yamato of all things should tell you everything about how much faith he had in him. His mother though, that's a different story
@@sephikong8323 He got Yamato because he was the oldest I believe.
@@sephikong8323 Vergil was a daddy's boy, and Dante was a mommy's boy
Summery: Vergil is motivated by fear of being powerless, or rather is motivated to be powerful so that he never has to be powerless
Dont you just love the way playing as Trish in Bloody Palace goes from the most fun to making you want to throw yourself into the ocean as soon as a blitz shows up?
Man it feels like not too long ago Foxcade was saying it’s be crazy just to be mentioned by the SBF crew.

Calling Vergil “Sparda’s second favorite son” hits different. Because it also means that he’s the least favorite. That hurts
Of course Vergil is the one main character in the series to have ever banged, just look at his literal bangs on his head!
Fantastic video mate. Bloody good job
Too bad he doesn't have that in 5/5SE
And i don't mind it, it fits his "old man' look
@@ihevmilkdhou would be cool to have it as a costume but you can always mod it in the PC version
@@Skeledom yes, i've seen the mod, and its kinda(a little) weird seeing "old man" Vergil with bangs, but personally 5 without bangs fits him well and his age
Yet he still banged, even without bangs
and.. he also "bang" a lady b4
I’m pretty sure Dante deepdicked Lady and Trish raw on the regular

It's pretty awesome that fully one third of Vergil's chosen weaponry are a pair of furry boots and gloves.
Are you talking shit about Beowulf? Because nobody talks shit about Beowulf, bub.
The boss when you fight him,the boss when you play as him
Vergil:”and I took that personally”
I've been playing SOOOOO much DMC5 lately. Vergil might just be the most fun character ever.
Agreed
If Lady was given any sort of way to use melee, it would be super cool if she got a whip. Almost like how Jacque from Onimusha 3 had got an Oni Whip
I just LOVE the cutscene at the end of Vergil's campaign in 5
Im shocked he didnt talk about how broken judgement cut is in 5 lmao
'DMC4 Vergil breaks the game over his knee'. I mean.. I see no problem here..
I love Virgil he’s really awesome and badass and his gameplay is tons of fun.
Couldnt agreed more, God Must Die mode and Must style mechanic should be added in DMC5SE.
@@MikeZhu114 Yeah, I forgot about that one but it was another great addition.
Still I love the “Easy Mode is now available” They should kept that tbh.
Is that a storm approaching?
Yes
Vergil looks less like Dante in every DMC game he’s appeared in since DMC3 and more like Nero
Idk man, there’s only one of them that can 1 shot the other on DMD (in 5) and it ain’t Vergil…
I just noticed how Vergil tries to attack Dante to stop him from saying "Jackpot" at 1:16:23
A very fun and nice detail imo
Two small things to mention about your segment of DMC5 SE
""Foolishness, Dante. Foolishness. Might controls everything. And without strength you can not protect anything. Let alone yourself.""
Given how I rewatched the entire retrospective recently, this was a treat. Great work Fox.
"A testament to how well he was designed when he was first conceived all the way back during the Bush administration"
Holy shit that actually made me realize how long it's been.
76 minites of M O T I V A T I O N.
LET'S GOOOOOOO.
I honestly hope that if they ever update this, Lady and Trish get the same update scale as Vergil got. Like you said, Lady is a proof of concept, and could do with being fully realized
Yeah, the fact that her and Trish only being playable in 4 is lame...
26:55 mexican Dante with Spanish accent, loving it
to me the DMC 3 SE switch release means I got in to this series at the perfect timing
Vergil was playable in a non-rerelease before. He was in Project X Zone 2. Granted, that was a sequel, but it's still the only version of the game.
Vergil an awesome playable character but it's long overdue for him to have his own levels.
I didn’t expect to be motivated today, thanks bro.
Capcom will always make sure we know this devil's power!
All I can say is that pulling an SSS when I use Sin Devil Trigger and the chorus kicks in...oh boy, that is some fire
The lack of comments about the transition at 4:04 is criminal. Super well done.
A hour long vid discussing the gameplay of special editions and playable Vergil’s evolution on Valentine’s Day? This makes me “motivated” 😎.
DmC Vergil's got some cool shit, it's just a shame he's stuck in that awful DLC campaign
yea i enjoyed Dantes campaign more then Vergil since you would fall off the edges all the time.
DMC4 In a nutshell
@Gold Star Gaming Still better then any other western action game at least
Man your Devil May Cry videos are my favourite videos about this series on UA-cam. I freaking love every single one! Thank you for all the time and effort it takes to make these I appreciate it so much and I'm sure many others do too!
As someone who is garbage at DMC I'm glad people explain it in ways I can enjoy.
Woolie ain't paying you to talk about how sick Vergil is unless you surpass that one hour mark GOD DAMN YOU.
THIS IS THE POWER OF SPARDA
Great video my dude!
"You are not worthy as my opponent"
My motivation shot up to 200% when I saw the noti
I just hope that if Lady's Night DLC somehow comes to fruition, Nico and maybe even Lucia can be utilized more, nico can be their new gunsmith, and I just wanna see lucia not casted into the heartless sea.
I’ll always appreciate Devil May Cry, it’s such a special title in my eyes
It’s definitely got flaws but I can speak for many that it’s the greatest character-action game ever
I loved DmC: even though i played DMC4 first, i have played DMC5 and it is number 1 for me but DmC: has a special regard in my heart! I will always love this game no matter what people say....
Bury the Light motivated me to look up Vergil lore.
Imma put a target on myself but: Bury the Light is a prime example of that Metal By Numbers skit.
I mean sure, but pizza is just dough sauce and cheese, follow a guide and it'll still taste amazing 🤷♀️
Maybe, but GOD does is still SLAP
When Nero was dying in Argus's lab, and Vergil's spirit spoke to him through the shattered Yamato, Nero heard a voice in his head.
"What is it you seek?"
Nero replied. "Power."
"Then do as I have... and move your 'Shoot' button to a shoulder button.'"
[ -Easy Mode- Charge Shot is now selectable ]
I learned recently that if you consecutively do perfect judgement cut, Vergil actually says Jackpot 😁
This especially is nice character trait that makes me love Vergil despite him refusing to say it in the end cutscene.
For avoiding getting clapped by Royal Guard release, when he says “Royal Guard” wait for him to strike than counter attack. If you do activate his release a well timed trick dodge will save you.
Can we just agree that 2005 is a certified hood classic at this point
Long story short. Dmc5 was the game we didn't deserve. But needed.
He’s pretty much my favorite character, period.
I miss the downward slash attack that Vergil does as a follow-up to Yamato’s Upper Slash in DMC3. I wish they found a way to keep it in his later iterations.
It's in his pause combo with Yamato
I've never thought about remapping the summon swords to a shoulder trigger. I'm going to have to try that, also Vergil in DMC3 did actually have his own variation on battle themes with remixes of both Taste the Blood and Divine Hate
For what it's worth, DMC: Devil May Cry was my first DMC game. And, for what it's worth, I enjoyed it.
Go check out Hyve mind he was was in the same position playing the reboot first and really liking it
The transition to dmc4 was cut by an ad and the ad was kohls
Glad I'm not not the only why feels overwhelmed with DMC 4 Dante.
This is pretty good, I like these retrospectives because you explains mechanics I'll never be good at, but love to learn about anyways. Plus you're so passionate about everything you talk about it's hard to not want to listen.
15:44 slight correction, both "Taste the Blood" and "Divine Hate" have new remixes when playing as Vergil. Unless you play both characters one after the other in a short timespan, though, i can't blame anyone for missing that detail.
Ah yes, Vergil from the "Special Edition" series
