A fun thing about V is that his gameplay is implicitly identical to his role in the story: He lets others do all the heavy lifting (Summons fight demons, Dante/Nero fight Urizen) because he's unable to.. and then comes in and snatches up the kill.
there's actually an even deeper meaning to this his demons are said to be discarded trauma from when Vergil was Nelo Angelo, making them lingering "nightmares" the symbolism comes in the fact of how tragic V's very being is. his demons, his "nightmares", are a terrifying force and can deal so much damage, but cannot actually kill other demons at all, it's V who has to land the finishing blow. this symbolizes their role as Vergil's trauma or nightmares. if a person is traumatized, they end ip with nightmares in their sleep or even just mental images in their brain. nightmares put fear in the psyche of a person. they're terrifying and outright damage a person mentally, but at the end of the day, they can't actually kill the person. and by that, it also means if a person is traumatized enough that they can't take it, they eventually kill themselves let me then summarize this: V's -demons- trauma can't kill -people- himself, but V himself can end -them- himself
@@Jaded_Jinx Further taking the phrase the enemy of my enemy is my friend. Someone close to you or even yourself can be your biggest downfall. Which is why Griffon Shadow and Nightmare chose to leave V knowing Dante would put them down would free Vergil from his trauma as Nelo Angelo and do Vergil a favor and grant him but a portion of V's humanity as seen where Vergil would be content with just being "better" than Dante should he defeat Nero in the last mission. Which I personally found as a huge face-lift for Vergil's typical state of mind of power power and power to enjoy the simple things in life and live out each victory like it's your last.

I find it amazing how in just the past year I've gone from not really knowing anything about this series, to it being probably my favorite game series ever. Everything from the combat to the characters... I love it all. 3 and 5 especially have such wonderfully told stories that are just fit to burst with emotion and personality. I'm so glad I decided to get on the hype wagon after 5 was announced, it's been a great ride. :D
43:01 Or at least, that's what Dante THINK his motivations are. Could very well be that he KNOWS his mother tried to save him, because he was playing far from home, but that she died trying to reach him. "Mother thought i couldn't protect myself, so she went looking for me even though it could kill her. I must obtain power so i can protect myself." could very well be his original motivation. I mean yes, "all i wanted was to be loved and protected" and stuff. But it's open, since it's Dante theorizing and Urizen can't give an answer.
I just wanna see Sparda. There was a sign at the Berial fight in dmc 4 that Mundus is still alive. I wanna see Vergil and Dante traveling through the demon worlds, facing off against Mundus and or finding Sparda. And returning to their son, cause Nero is as much Vergil's son as he is Dante's. Fight me (puts on dr Faust)
I wanna see vergil and Nero to team up to deal the killing blow to Mundus. Like, Dante got his shot in, But Vergil has his own issues to get even for and Nero is yet to take part in the family tradition. And what better Father-Son bonding time than taking care of the resident main evil overlord?

Can we take a moment to acknowledge that Nero took his own dad's advice to heart? In the prologue, V tells him to "Stop hitting yourself and think of ways to actually get stronger". In the final mission, you see him taking a moment to think after calling Kyrie, and achieves that goal.
I'm so glad we finally got a conclusion to the series. Not only that, I got to meet Reuben Langdon at Momocon 2019. That was the icing on the cake for somebody who's been a fan of Devil May Cry since 2001.

To this day I still get chills when I think about how I preloaded this game. I cleared my schedule and made sure I had an entirely free weekend to go through it and as soon the game unlocked and I heard that “Devil May Cry” it was like I was kid again. Not many games can have an affect like that and to this day 5 is my favorite action game and In one of my top games list period.
One thing the story is missing is Mundus. Imagine if the game ended with Vergil and Dante encountering Mundus and about to fight him? Or the end credits gameplay being you vs Mundus with Vergil? That would've been amazing.
Mundus being sealed away instead of killed off is kind of a writing no-no, but it saved itself by not sequel-baiting. This allows Mundus to not give anymore plot relevance and still be considered killed off. This series is not afraid to move on from old adversaries, save Vergil.
Mundus appearing in the end would've been a great callback to DMC3, difference being Dante and Vergil are both in Hell and much more powerful than before. This time it's Mundus who's fucked.
@@loregasmic nah, if mundus comes back he needs to fight Nero. Remember what Dante said, "be sure to say hi to my son next time you come back" so mundus thinks Nero is Dante's son because blood of sparda and stuff, and Nero laughs at him.

It's always wonderful to watch these types of video essays where you can absolutely see just how passionate one truly is for a franchise. As someone who is still fairly an outsider to the DMC series, I absolutely enjoyed watching this video because it served as a window for me to see exactly what it is that makes fans adore the series while helping me understand a lot more about the community. And of course viewing one's interpretation of the storyline. Overall, this was a fantastic video and I hope to see more from you soon. Definitely eager to watch your Nier Automata video if your tease is anything to go by.
As far as Vergil's 'redemption' being rushed, i think that the final scenes with him in DMC5 don't establish him as 'redeemed', but rather show that he is willing to seek redemption, and set up an opportunity for him to do so in future games.
@Fozzy W indeed. I think that they should take the fast travel from how witcher 3 did it. I did enjoy exploring in DD1 but at the same time it did eat up a lot of time and slowing the balance of the game at times. Though I still loved it
Dragon's Dogma did have fast travel, but it was much more scarce in the base game than in other games, where you could just pick a town and load in there - you used a rare item (ferrystones) to teleport to one of two key locations, or to an area you marked with another rare item (Portcrystals). They both became much easier to locate in the Dark Arisen version, but nobody outside those who played it paid attention to that by the looks of these and other comments. . Also I doubt DD2 can happen, since it's kind of a closed-book story that loops on itself. If you're that desperate, I guess DD Online could count, but I digress.
The passion, love and dedication you’ve put into this series that I grew up on and one of the first games i played, maybe the series that got me into gaming that actually moulded who I am today actually warms my heart, thank you for this series and doing it justice.
It's videos like yours that actually got me interested in the Devil May Cry series. From an aesthetic perspective, I find it fun, compelling, and inspiring more often than not. I love watching through your analysis and retrospective videos so much since coming across your channel and hearing that they helped you get through some difficult times, has me appreciating them even more. Truth be told, Borderlands is my favorite video game franchise, so hopefully that tease at there was genuine. If so, I can't wait to see what you have to say on the series!
I’ve literally just finished watching Clemps newest video and when I clicked this and heard his voice I was very confused and thought I was losing my mind
Shin: 真, "true" 伸, "extend" 新, "new" 心, "heart". First experience with the term; Shin Godzilla which makes sense. New Godzilla design, lore etc. Moreover 心 in Chinese literally translatrs to heart, and is often used in words relating to emotion of feelings (I've been taking Chinese for 7 years as reference for this knowledge). Sin: An immoral act considered to be a transgression against divine law. Most commonly seen form and first experience; the seven deadly sins. Greed, Gluttony, Lust, Vanity, Wrath, Sloth and Pride. Adjustable depending on the medium that references them. I could see an argument in favor of either name. Personally _Sin_ Devil Trigger sounds far better than _Shin_ Devil Trigger merely due to the amount of words that make up the transformation, making Shin Devil Trigger sounds more like a mouthful as opposed to something that rolls of the tongue. However this is a matter of personal preference, and is not worth arguing. Shin makes sense, the transformation is a new form based on both Dante's Rebellion and is father's blade Sparda, taking the value of both blades into hinself to create a sword all his own - Dante. Sin makes sense from a more literal perspective. Dante is half demon, the franchise is named Devil May Cry. The transformation being refered to as "Sin" makes contextual sense. Moreover, I'd go as far as to state many characters are quite guilty of sin. Vergil in particular has a character arc revolving around his demonic pride and thirst for power. Dante in this game is suffering from the sloth of just being done with all this demon hunting. To embrace both the legacy of his family as well as himself to create Dante and the Sin Devil Trigger results in the more demonic form the transformation has. Unlike his standard Devil Trigger, Sin truly resembles a demon. What little human details that remain could be put off as just his true demonic appearance (just look at Sparda hismelf). I'm personally a fan of Sin as opposed to Shin, however as state previously it's all a matter of preference.
Knowing the Japanese, it's probably both in some sort of pun that got lost in translation since Sin sounds so similar to Shin. By extension, this new form takes on both meanings. Really, this would be so up their alley, they Japanese love puns to an unholy degree.
@@NTTofMistery The sins are swaped depending on what medium represents them. Sometimes Pride is removed all together and swaped off for Vanity. Other times Envy is the sin to be removed (I.E Persona 5). It all depends on the medium, so technically, you're not incorrect.
I'm really late on this, but I want to comment on Fury's design as an enemy, as they went from being my most hated foe, to my most loved foe in the entire game. Fury's overwhelming amount of invincibility frames is absolutely offputting when you're just getting started fighting them, but they actually abide by a bunch of rules when they become vulnerable. Highly exploitable rules, and by design. As the game's gone on, people have steadily labbed out how to exploit those rules until they could kill Fury in a single pass via long, complicated combo strings that constantly exploit Fury's weaknesses and prevent it from teleporting away through said exploitation. Hell Antenora is about teaching the player to be aware of their attacks properties as to not set off their enrage. Hell Judecca is about teaching the player how to create and exploit openings without the game handing them to them. Death Scissors is about parrying. Chaos is about keeping calm under pressure (it constantly spinning before striking out at seemingly random), and Fury takes this all together and really pushes the player. As for Fury's weakness, it doesn't cope well with being forced into a hard knockdown state. Abilities such as Red Queen Combo D and similar that leave it face down in the dirt deny its teleportation. Landing hits at random only serve to make it warp away, while repeatedly pressing on its weakness to being stunned on the ground allow the player to rack up more and more time to beat it down until finally reaching the point where players can repeatedly restun it until it dies in a single pass. Beyond that, there's a lot of ways to open it up. Rawhide to parry it. Red Queen's flame trails to exploit it's complete lack of stagger resist. Royal Release. Royal Revenge. Ragtime to pull it into normal speeds. Balrog jabs. Cerberus Ice Age. Options are far from limited and experimentation just reveals more and more things you can do to them. I love fighting them now, after many hours of steadily coming to terms with the game's systems and internal logic, and finding all the little cracks in their armor that the devs gave such an initially overwhelming foe feels amazing.
i only truly realized that once playing through the game as vergil, there was numerous tools for every character to deal with the furys (or at least every character that reasonably encountered one as v never thought one on the normal difficultys) but playing as vergil with no royal guard, no devil breakers and just perfect timing as a defensive and offensive tool the simplicity of attacking into their attack for a parry and onecomboing them afterwards opened up to me, you have tools and openings for every enemy and furys show that to a perfection.
Loved the DmC references. Even though I didn't like DmC, the gameplay was good (especially Definitive Edition), and they put some things from the reboot into this game... The slo-mo final kill, talking during boss fights, music leveling up along the style rank, the training mode, gun noises (yes E & I and Coyote A have the reboot's gun sounds), the Doppelganger for Vergil (and when he activates it vs Dante, Dante replies with "not in a million years")... Great video. DMC 5 is to me the pinacle of action games, as the boss fights and gameplay are truly amazing. It does perfectly what video games are made for : FUN. It's a game you would always come back to for some fun. And... Please. Give us some playable Vergil, Capcom !
Music getting louder and the lyrics kicking in at higher ranks was always intended just got implemented in the reboot which most people disliked and Tameem wasn't helping. I think most of the other things were features that Itsuno wanted to add and put in the reboot or never had the chance to since he was assisting in the development of the reboot and liked the game. And I do remember Nero has his own line something along the lines of how a second one of Vergil won't do him any good when Vergil summons his Doppelganger. Honestly what got me in this video is that DMC4, DmC, and DMC5 all have their own consistently most annoying enemies to deal with that nobody likes and for DMC5 its the assassin Fury that teleports around trying to strike for large damage and leaves few openings. For DmC it was the color coded enemies that forced you to swap to that weapon type otherwise you would flinch and deal no damage to them. For DMC4 it was the Blitz and since its been 10 years I don't think that one needs any explaining since he was kind of a combination of DmC and DMC5 worst enemies. Also knowing Capcom has adopted free DLC with Monster Hunter World and expanding to the Western Market its quite likely they will do the same for free Vergil DLC in DMC5 to get us to love Capcom more since they are becoming one of the best companies since changing their business practices. If I remember correctly I believe DMC4SE with Vergil already had some mechanics from DmC carried over like the Just Judgement Cut so Itsuno is definitely inspired by every iteration of Vergil that is created and enjoys placing mechanics from them into the playable versions of the character. So a DMC5 Vergil would definitely have Just Judgement Cut again and they are probably changing Judgement Cut End to the new version we see in the boss fight along with adding Sin Devil Trigger with a updated Devil Trigger (Black Coat means black Devil most likely with EX skin being blue Vergil). Then there is the problem that Beowulf and Force Edge isn't with him so unless they add it for the nostalgia for DMC4SE Vergil he needs new weapons or a completely fleshed out Dark Slayer Style similar to Nero where he fights only with Yamato and Summoned Swords.
What a journey, thanks for the videos you put out, you got me into a series i never thought i needed devil may cry 5 is my personal favorite game of all time. Whether it truly is the end or more to come who knows but what we got is truly a legacy worth visiting.

As long as go with changes in the definitive edition, improve both the story, characters, and some design elements, and DON'T insult the fanbase, I think it won't be that bad of situation.
@@4ever3052pac Honestly the whole story is pretty irredeemable. I don't see any good reason to revisit the reboot at this point. To be fair to Dante, I think his colder and more hard-headed attitude in this game partly comes from his desire to keep Nero, who is all too eager to seek vengeance to prove his own worth to himself, away from the battle with Vergil for the sake of sparing the boy the trauma that would induce. Luckily, the new devil hunter ended up finding a far more benevolent motivation for fighting by endgame.

The fact Woolie exactly compiles reactions from THOUSANDS maybe more DMC fans... Well, too true.
That Megaman Sequelitis reference really caught me off guard! Well played!
As far as Vergil's 'redemption' being rushed, i think that the final scenes with him in DMC5 don't establish him as 'redeemed', but rather show that he is willing to seek redemption, and set up an opportunity for him to do so in future games.
Can't wait for dragons dogma 2. Loved DMC 5
Dude, SAME!!!
@Fozzy W indeed. I think that they should take the fast travel from how witcher 3 did it. I did enjoy exploring in DD1 but at the same time it did eat up a lot of time and slowing the balance of the game at times. Though I still loved it
@Fozzy W they have fast travel
But I've already played Monster Hunter
Really, this would be so up their alley, they Japanese love puns to an unholy degree.
correct me if im wrong, but i thought vanity=pride. and the missing sin would then be envy right?
@@NTTofMistery
The sins are swaped depending on what medium represents them.

I love fighting them now, after many hours of steadily coming to terms with the game's systems and internal logic, and finding all the little cracks in their armor that the devs gave such an initially overwhelming foe feels amazing.
the only issue is that if you dont kill them with a SSS you can kiss your style points goodbye
i only truly realized that once playing through the game as vergil, there was numerous tools for every character to deal with the furys (or at least every character that reasonably encountered one as v never thought one on the normal difficultys) but playing as vergil with no royal guard, no devil breakers and just perfect timing as a defensive and offensive tool the simplicity of attacking into their attack for a parry and onecomboing them afterwards opened up to me, you have tools and openings for every enemy and furys show that to a perfection.
@@devolo5947 pretty much its pretty much a better blitz

This game also re-ignited my spark for the DMC franchise and I was up to my eyeballs in this game for months after it came out trying to figure things out. I'm still slowly trying to get my platinum trophy, but I've got to do a lot more gittin gud before that happens. My favorite highlight here is how you pointed out how games can inspire so many people and help pull them out of those dark places you mentioned. Keep up the good work.
Great Video!!! Worth watching (:
I enjoyed playing as V the most, he was also the reason I decided to buy this DMC game in the end. Really loved it!
I really enjoyed this video. Part of the fun of the last year, alongside the build to and release of the game was all the commentary and LPs being put out alongside it. And your series is a big part of that.
The time has come and so have I.
I love how these videos keep getting me all emotional for a game series I myself have barely ever dipped my toes into
Rest in Peace Super Best Friends Play. Gone too soon.
And also good review.
Considering how little of a fuck Matt has been giving these last few years they probably should have split sooner.
Love the guys but man if he didnt cear he *really* showed it.
Ooh, why they broke up?? No more magic?
Thank you for this video and the DMC retrospective. It has helped reignite my love for the series and has given me a deeper appreciation for it. Thanks again
To be fair to Devil May Cry 2 i do like the Lucia story and character development.
Great job on this video and thank you for showing some 2bfp/castle super beast stuff. Those guys love DMC more than anybody else and that love is what got me into the games and now they’re some of my favorites.
I'm a goddamn 30 year old well-adjusted adult and this stupid fucking game made me cry
This game... it was something I had not known I needed, until I received it.
Growing up with the series and waiting so long, I almost forgot it was a part of my childhood.
The times and challenges are, and were, rough, in my recent past.
But those few, good, endearing memories of escaping, thanks to games such as this, I could never lose.
And seeing so many people feel the same way, ecstatic and happy, no matter the age, due to this game's emergence, is truly motivating.
That moment you didn't realize the video was a hour long until you look threw the comment section XDD just means I was enjoy my self hearing your point of view for DMC5
I honestly found your channel thanks to this awesome franchise and in my opinion 5 exceeded all expectations I had for it
