The Japanese really do draw inspiration from the same sources for world building and symbolism. As a kid I got curious about why a lot of things feel familiar between different games and it's always about alchemical concepts, the 72 demons of Solomon, the book of genesis, gnosticism etc. The Temenigru tower in DMC3 for example is definitely inspired by the Tower of Babel which if you turn upside down looks like Dante's Inferno (9 circles of hell).

How fortuitous, I’ve been revisiting Devil May Cry recently 🤘 didn’t realize the depth of symbolism. great stuff as always, would love to see a part 2!
Man, You gonna have a treat with VOID STRANGER, fits your channel so well love DMC, my favorite franchise, its a shame that pós dmc 3 they lost a lot of these references
Wow. Great job in researching for this video. After 20+ years of playing DMC, I never thought of looking into these subtle images and figures from the game.
Last week I went to the Met and spent 2 hours in the Tibet exhibit. I learned that vajra is thunderbolt but didn’t know it was also diamond and the reasons for it. Synchronicity is synchronizing. Ps. In FF X-2 Rikku get over the fear of lightning and note can use vajra as a strong attack.
I remember when I first played DMC1 and DMC2 and then DMC3 when I was little. Back then those games were a _'Mystery'_ to me. I knew back then it had a 'hidden message' / 'meaning' behind everything a player could see and collect but I couldn't comprehend that until now in my late 28. When I first played them, I played these games with some fear. I can't explain why but it had that 'something off' with these games. But If I have to choose which one was the most 'weird' out of the three, then I would say DM2. That was a weird sequel-mega weird. DMC1 had that religious tone to it; it was dark and brutal. I was scared when I first played it. DM2... I can't explain. It felt like a game that took an alternative route and didn't align with other games. But thank you for reviewing the DMC franchise. 🙏 P.s. I'm reading a book called _"Book of Wisdom"_ all the mentioned symbolism in this video and games align perfectly one to one of what I'm reading. It's actually insane of how deep all of this is!
It always amazes me how we can find similar references to the occult in so many different cultures. They might not always use the same word but they clearly gravitate towards the same thing.
You and your alchemy. 4 and 8 pointed star? One of the many wonderful electrical effects when 2 or more planets align axially. Space is such a wonderful place.
What a nice timing, I just so happened to be in one of my yearly intense DMC fan phases. Thank you so much for making this video!! It's really interesting to know a lot of this stuff about the elements of games I love
Oh Max. Just when I needed your relaxing voice and unique approach to gaming to save me from an otherwise demoralizing 2 weeks you come through with a video from one of my favorite series! The hero we deserve. I’m so excited to watch this. Thank you 🎉 this is turning out to be a wonder filled day!
Saw this vid on my recommended, got hooked, time to binge watch the rest of them on the channel, really cool stuff!! Defs looking forward to your coverage of the rest of the DMC games.
So awesome to see you covering Devil May Cry. When first watching your vidoes about alchemical references, I always thought about the philosopher's stone segment of DMC1. Really excited to see you cover the other games as well. Think DMC4 has potential in the ideas of becoming an angel or god, and similarly DMCV with eating the Qlippoth fruit to become stronger, separating/combining your human and demon sides, as well as some of the enemy designs. Can't believe you're covering Devil May Cry right after Lost Kingdoms, really putting the spotlight on some of my favorite series I grew up with. Keep up the great work.
One of the many things I love about DMC, as a franchise, is that I play it and I'm Wahoo Pizza Man. I know the story is very well put together and they build these compelling and meaningful moments and I pontificate on the story for some time. However I have then seen so many videos explaining complex or lost story telling concepts, or metaphysical and philosophical ideals through the games. They clearly aren't forcing it either, it's obviously and deliberately referenced and done so wonderfully. It's so rare to have a franchise that is meant for so many different levels of enjoyment
It took me 19 years to realize this, i always knew the vajura was apart of something but never had the clue to do any research on it. And i didn’t know the doors symbolized anything lol 🥲
You mention at the start of the video that there will be spoilers for DMC 1-3 (which I'm sure most people will come in expecting, but it's still worth saying just in case!), but then also include spoilers for other games that people would have no reason to expect. That aside, really interesting video :D
I find this subtle mysticism a lot in Mecha, too. You know how many Mecha have an Emerald 3rd Eye? Just pay attention to that if you watch some. You'll be shocked how many do. Some mecha, like Knight of Gold, double up on it and both the robot AND the pilot have emerald 3rd eyes. EDIT: Now that I think about it, it's kinda like that line from Mazinger Z. With this machine you can become either a God or a Devil. It's up to you what you do with it, Anointed One.
I love Devil May Cry!! This was really interesting and gave me some more things to chew on and think about. I'd love another video covering the other games and more!!
Great to see a deeper look at the occult elements of my favorite series! Would love to see a part 2. The reboot has issues and I hate the characters but I will say it’s probably the best playing western character action game, if not now definitely when it came out. It’s also got some of my favorite levels in any game.
I love the Devil May Cry series... for the most part. Not all the games are great, but I personally feel like there's always something to enjoy in each of the games. This may be controversial, but this is my personal ranking for the series. 5. Devil May Cry 4. 4. Devil May Cry 5. 3. Devil May Cry 2. 2. Devil May Cry 3 and DmC Devil May Cry Definitive Edition are tied. 1. Devil May Cry 1.
Devil May Cry 2? Better than 4 and 5????? Did you even play 2? Also I hope you know that DMC DMC never had lock on and the blue and red enemies messed up the flow of combat. So if you played the "Definitive Edition" it doesn't count, because that came out much later and RE ADDED old mechanics from the older games (like lock on) and changed how enemies work to make the gameplay better than it used to be. Just a heads up. Might wanna distinguish between definitive edition and the original release.
@dio2076 I didn't say that Devil May Cry 2 is better than Devil May Cry 4 and 5. I said I liked it more. Although I do think Devil May Cry 4 and 5 are flawed games, I would never be so bold as to claim that they are more flawed than Devil May Cry 2. This was just a personal ranking.
@dio2076 I was always a fan of DmC Devil May Cry since the beginning, but I am aware that the Definitive Edition improves the game. That's a good point about distinguishing it, though. It hadn't occurred to me because I always just assume people will go for the Definitive Edition as the default.
@@Brandon_PowellYou gotta admit people like myself are bound to find your take to be outrageous, especially after calling DMC 4 and 5 more flawed than DMC 2.
@BuryTheLight-tds Well firstly I want to point out that I didn't call Devil May Cry 4 and 5 more flawed than Devil May Cry 2. I'll reiterate that even though I believe that Devil May Cry 4 and 5 are very flawed games, I don't think they are more flawed than Devil May Cry 2. This was just a personal ranking. And I'd also like to point out that, of course I see why people have a hard time getting their heads around my perspective. Especially considering I didn't elaborate on it. Unfortunately, I won't be doing that right now because I don't want to clog up his comment section with spoilers for the series before he's gotten a chance to cover the other games himself. I'm sorry about the confusion, but that's the way it has to be for now.
If it's what I think it is and you mean the reboot than yeah umm I loved that more than Devil May Cry 2 as much as that's been glazed recently, call me crazy but it's not that really bad when you just take it away from not being a "DMC Game" as a whole as many others have always told me and yeah it worked out pretty well kind of for me personally but that one meme liners still hits me every time now... *Not In A Million Years!* I wish that were true but if that were so we wouldn't have gotten this perfect disaster piece of a game 😌😎👌 no really though, I can't say much good or bad about both games DMC2 & the reboot but for one I know that the reboot has some pretty hard slapping tunes in game if you're into that type of stuff and sounds.
I played through dmc1 recently and noticed most of these references, but never have I put together that they actually gave more thought than "looked cool" into the symbolism.
It was cool to see some of the finer details of DMC brought to the spotlight as a long time fan of the series. People don’t give enough credit to the thought that goes into the non-gameplay aspects of DMC.
Fun fact. Devil May Cry was originally developed as Resident Evil 4. After the plot got derailed so much they decided to turn it into it's own thing and start Resident Evil 4 from scratch. The result was my favorite hack and slash game series.
Glad you are playing this iconic Capcom franchise Max. It's has some lots of cult references in these games, and how much religious symbolisms has been shown in these sequels.
The art director of DMC2/3, Daigo Ikeno, is a big mythology and occultism buff. Another thing, and most people don't know this, but back in the PS2 days, Capcom mentioned having extensive knowledge of literature and folklore as a plus in job applications. They don't do this anymore, but they most likely hired quite a few people who were well-read beyond just their fields.
Oh my god, Eliza! I know her from the dmc discord server. And I also shared your video there. But yea, usually when I hear: "I will tell you something you didn't know about dmc", usually means it's something that I have heard about. I am dmc fan since soon 2 decades, but this, this I really haven't heard yet. So please make a part 2
Didnt expect a deep dive on Alchemy and the Philosophers Stone ❤ Sifu follows that 5 colors, elements thing with its bosses. Saw a really good breakdown of their elements personifying them. So when i saw your breakdown of the 5 i had to pause and see if it fit. And boy, the yellow and white was perfect for the characters.
If I'm not mistaken, the skulls / orbs you collect are (at least lore wise) also alchemical creations and/or residue. This is interesting, and looking forward for more. Definitely take in the roots and fruits in DMC5. And the soft drink in the reboot.
great video, but chill with the "I've found something no one in the fandom ever did" 5s after saying you've never played it before 🙄 We are already watching the video, you don't need the click bait anymore, respect the fandom you are just tipping your toes in, it pays back 😘 again, great video
I think you were on a nice train of thoughts with the philosopher's stone in DMC1 but forgot to mention that this symbol of the source of life and the universe is what actually unlocks the way to Hell. This could mean that Hell is the source of life in the DMC universe
I dont know how much this is like related to your video but The nightmare boss was created by mundus and he is deeply related to the alchemical symbols on those things you hit, i feel like that could imply mundus used alchemy to create him and Trish In devil may cry 2 there's the tris magias boss, which roughly translates into three magics in english, but i feel like it could also maybe have been meant to be something more like three mages, which would make sense in the context of the three heads and could possibly be a reference to christianism(?), though i think it could be three magics and referencing the process of creating the philosophers stone like you mentioned(though i always thought that the head you refer to as being black was blue so idk)
The island in the first game is a real historical place to an extent. It's based off of an island that was separated from part of England and enduring. One of the was happening in the region. They couldn't get any food or crops. So everyone starved to death and people started cannibalizing each other.

Voldemort/Quirrel - Arkham/Jester
Philosopher Stone - Dante's & Vergil's Amulet as one
Why does this match in one way or another ? 😭 Even the pics I saw in Wikipedia about HP, many of them coincide with what I noticed in dmc3 😭😭😭😭 Harry May Cry 😭😭😭
TheGamingMuse has a great video about alchemy symbolism in DMC2, also drawing on Dante and Lucia being a complienting White Queen and Red King. Would reccomend.
ua-cam.com/video/0oiIMldnzTM/v-deo.html
"he defeats god. Like every protagonist of a japanese game."
Lmao too true.
So glad that UA-cam served me your videos, love your analysis here and in your Silent Hill & Planescape Torment videos and wanted to voice/send my thanks!
How fortuitous, I’ve been revisiting Devil May Cry recently 🤘 didn’t realize the depth of symbolism. great stuff as always, would love to see a part 2!
Finally, a DMC video where I didn't know any of the contents before. This has been very educational
Great games - haven't played them in forever. Thanks Max! 🖖
Max covering DMC anything is gonna be a great time. Thanks 👍 🔥🔥
Man, You gonna have a treat with VOID STRANGER, fits your channel so well
love DMC, my favorite franchise, its a shame that pós dmc 3 they lost a lot of these references
Read the Visions of V manga for more understanding of Devil May Cry 5
Dante vs Inuyasha would be so dope
Plenty of games from Japan don’t have you take down gods. But I know what you mean.
FAKE NEWS!!
ONE MORE GOD REJECTED
@@BuryTheLight-tds oh my god i was literally just listening to that song
Demigods maybe or not but yeah that too I guess
Wow. Great job in researching for this video. After 20+ years of playing DMC, I never thought of looking into these subtle images and figures from the game.
I would love to see you do a dmc part 2, there aren't enough dmc lore videos that aren't just story recaps
Awesome video! Glad you're doing breakdowns on this series. Looking forward to the next one!
Haters will say "fake, never happened"
9:12 Since DMC1's on numerous platforms, especially Microsoft Windows and even PS2, texture dumping might help
Probably the best if not only the best person here to analyze a DMC game the way you did especially for Devil May Cry 2.
You should also check out the 2007 anime, even though it is not as good as the games imo, it is canon.
I think it was great, even if flawed.
It was actually quite good, much better than DMC 2.
The anime is better than DMC2 at least.
@@BuryTheLight-tdsHaha you beat me to it brother 😢😅👌 exactly though.
Read the books. They're actually so good.
To parrot many others: I'm so excited to see you're covering one of my favorite franchises.
Yo a video on my favorite series and a potential new dmc fan in Max? Let's go!
great lore matt! youtube recommended this to me while i was watching something totally unrelated ahaha. good job
14:34 And arguably WHAT!?
Informative as always.
The secret is that the devil never really cries, so...
"Maybe somewhere out there a devil may cry 3: Dante's awakening."
Let Max explain why Devils never Cry please. 😢
I was going to write the same joke almost word for word but you beat me to it lol
The Devil cries out as he strikes you
I mean... it says "may". It could happen in the next game 🤷🏽♀️
The funny thing is that a lot of the stuff you mentioned in the DMC 2 segment is in the extra materials (art books, guides, etc)
That dmc background music still slaps so hard thanks for this video bro appreciate you
Saw this vid on my recommended, got hooked, time to binge watch the rest of them on the channel, really cool stuff!!
Keep up the great work.
my favorite creator tackling my favorite franchise? early christmas lets gooooooooooooooooooooo
El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron mentioned again lets go!
Yeah, this bummed me out a bit. I haven't played these, I quit the video halfway through now..
Damn, I was just playing DMC5. What are the odds?
Drink every time he says "Philosopher's Stone". Sick video btw
Fantastic video. Looking forward to part 2.
Can't wait for part 2. Remember to have fun!
Excellent video. I always imagined there were some depth to Trismagia and the summoners in DMC 2 having elemental powers, but not explained anywhere.
I love Devil May Cry!! This was really interesting and gave me some more things to chew on and think about. I'd love another video covering the other games and more!!
I’m glad you’re getting into DMC. These games are great! I can’t wait until you play 5
Devils never cry is such an amazing song 😢
I find your videos very interesting to watch. Thank you for making them
Great to see a deeper look at the occult elements of my favorite series!
2. Devil May Cry 3 and DmC Devil May Cry
Definitive Edition are tied.
You’re gonna HATE Ninja Theory’s DMC
If you take it as it's own game and not a "reboot" of DMC, then it's actually pretty good.
The philosophical GENIUS of DMC!!!
Never thought I'd see my favorite game on this channel
Always happy to hear about any of your musings!
Fun fact. Devil May Cry was originally developed as Resident Evil 4. After the plot got derailed so much they decided to turn it into it's own thing and start Resident Evil 4 from scratch. The result was my favorite hack and slash game series.
Get ready for a wild ride my friend. Just get ready
Glad you are playing this iconic Capcom franchise Max. It's has some lots of cult references in these games, and how much religious symbolisms has been shown in these sequels.
also this game was initially supposed to be RE4 thats craaaazy
Looks like the art direction of Devil May Cry 2 surprisingly had a lot of thought put into it, never noticed any of these details before
The art director of DMC2/3, Daigo Ikeno, is a big mythology and occultism buff.
More devil may cry analysis would be more than welcome. 3 and 5 are two of the best games ever made!
Didnt expect a deep dive on Alchemy and the Philosophers Stone ❤
Sifu follows that 5 colors, elements thing with its bosses.
And the soft drink in the reboot.
great video, but chill with the "I've found something no one in the fandom ever did" 5s after saying you've never played it before 🙄 We are already watching the video, you don't need the click bait anymore, respect the fandom you are just tipping your toes in, it pays back 😘
again, great video
The scary movie clip was not what I was expecting in this video.
I think you were on a nice train of thoughts with the philosopher's stone in DMC1 but forgot to mention that this symbol of the source of life and the universe is what actually unlocks the way to Hell. This could mean that Hell is the source of life in the DMC universe
I dont know how much this is like related to your video but
The nightmare boss was created by mundus and he is deeply related to the alchemical symbols on those things you hit, i feel like that could imply mundus used alchemy to create him and Trish
In devil may cry 2 there's the tris magias boss, which roughly translates into three magics in english, but i feel like it could also maybe have been meant to be something more like three mages, which would make sense in the context of the three heads and could possibly be a reference to christianism(?), though i think it could be three magics and referencing the process of creating the philosophers stone like you mentioned(though i always thought that the head you refer to as being black was blue so idk)
I adore Devil May Cry and I would love if you made more videos about the franchise.
The island in the first game is a real historical place to an extent. It's based off of an island that was separated from part of England and enduring. One of the was happening in the region. They couldn't get any food or crops. So everyone starved to death and people started cannibalizing each other.
Finally, content on the deeper lore in these games
I would love to see more in depth lore on dmc5! Def my favourite series yet, dmc4 is also very fun to play!
Shocked to not hear a mention of Agni and Rudra from DMC3
Great vid! Here I thought it'd be just the usual but glad I was wrong.
I think the 3 is sulpher, salt, and mercury representing body soul and mind respectively
I am interested in a part 2.
