Hey everyone! Firstly, thanks so much for the positive response to this video, I'm genuinely shocked at how well this video did. Secondly, for those who are trying to remind me about Ninja Theory's bad PR and how it damaged the reputation for them, yes I remember. I will be covering that in the next video where I focus on Ninja Theory's part of everything and the finished product, where as this video was meant to focus specifically on Capcom and why they pushed for a reboot in the first place. Though if you think it's going to be a 30 minute video of my dumping on NT, I'm sorry but you will likely be a bit disappointed.
DMC has never had strong narratives but 3 was the exception; don't discredit that one just because it doesn't have perceived literary importance or that it's not superficially complex
Moises Cabasquini I wasn't trying to discredit it. I was saying that it was the peak of the story quality, and in fact every other game in the series has a much worse written story. I have a whole section in my DMC3 video dedicated to the quality of the story, so I didn't want to spend a bunch of time qualifying that statement.
@Foxcade ohhhhh; the way your statement in the video was framed, it almost sounded like you were implying that out of all the mediocre DMC narratives, DMC3 just happened to be the most bearable. My bad, I misconstrued what you said
which actually it is, but there was a rumor says DmC was supposed to replace the original dmc and they wanted to continue making DmC 2 instead of DMCV, which is why the fans kinda blow up to hate this game and i also hate this dante/vergil tbh, gameplay good but the trades was story and character which is not good
@OuttaIdeas Not just the cartoons. Even rebooted movies looked better than a video game DMC reboot. Such as Superman reboot, Batman reboot, Spider-Man reboot etc. (save for Ghostbusters reboot because that looked nothing like a reboot).
So Ninja Theroy might have actually planned on making a game more faithful to the original but Capcom told them that they wanted it to be like a proper western game... That's where it went wrong.
It didn't go wrong though, what the hell are you talking about? Whiny weaboos obsessed with anything that is a Japanese caricature are what's wrong. DmC was an incredible game. Japanese are awful storytellers and character designers compared to westerners.
DmC: Devil May cry is a good hack n slash game, but it’s not a good DMC game. It lost a lot of it’s original identity, despite being well designed on a gameplay standpoint. If it wasn’t attached to the DMC name, it most likely would have been decently popular.
I view this game as another game n i still dont like it. The character is not likeable, the story is meh. At least the combat is fun although i hate the colour code enemy. Halfway of my gameplay, im already feel bored with the game. Its just the game didnt have the charm that might attach me to the game. Ive played lots of games n this is one of the game that i wont repeat anymore
"What's wrong with his hair!?" I couldn't stop laughing when I heard that! Everything they changed and you're worried about his hair? That is brilliant, man.
The thing is gamers get used to such iconic looks of characters in video-games, just think what would happen if they changed Matser Chief's green armor to a less bulky look, more slim-lined like Samus' power armor and made it yellow or something? With the Zelda series they made drastic changes to Link, took away his green tunic, and hat i wasnt too keen on the blue tunic which just looks like more of a big baggy shirt to me. But what i respect about Zelda: Breath of the Wild and what those devs at Ninty did was allowed us to unlock the classic green tunic in the game, IF we so preferred that, also you could actually get all the other variations of the classic green tunic from the different past Zelda games through the amibos. This is a e.g. of devs respecting that not all your gamerbase is going to accept when you make drastic changes to the look of a character.
@@bigbag6709 What made me hate DmC was all the attitude around it that what put me off it, and then that intro like kind of trolling the old Dante look, that didnt help. But i guess it doesnt matter now does it cause now we got Devil May Cry FIVE! and they seem to chose not to bother making another DmC sequel so lol.
@@paulprules DmC is not actually a bad game. True. Gameplay is not half bad. It was fast and smooth as well. But it shouldn't have used the same characters nor a similar backstory. It should have had its own unique hero and villain. Not our beloved Dante and Vergil. If they would've went with an original approach to the story and characters it wouldn't have had much negative reactions. Hell they made Nero for DMC4 but we ended up liking him in the end.
Паульс Павел I feel like I’m not allowed to say it, but I agree with you. The new game has solid combat, but the environment is bleak and repetitive. I miss the puzzles and platforming we were blessed with in DmC. Even the colors too...
Devil May Cry 4 was my first DMC game. Then i played "DmC" and personally, i don't think it was a bad game. But i certainly liked Devil May Cry 4 much more. I'm currently playing Devil May Cry V and i like the new character V to be honest. Not to play the whole game though, but the little parts, i like so far.
Laurent de backer Dude same exact situation here! DMC4 was my first experience and loved it, DMC I liked it a lot, definitely a different tone, but I enjoyed it thoroughly. Just beat DMC 5 and loved it as well. Very well done games overall:)
ikr, at this point i personally as a dmc fan wanted a story about sparda and now i also want a story of how vergil meet his wife and have nero as his son (legitimate son?)
Most likely because the intent of Sparda is to be a myth. The player fills in the details, because his specific actions aren't that important. It's his legacy that matters.
I actually really enjoyed DmC- it was different and the story was a little weak but the game play and concepts were actually very good. DMC 5 though!? FIRE! 🔥
Dmc's original story according to the trailers aka Dante prisoner seems interesting. Shame we didn't get that. I'm thinking of rewriting Dmc's story. But what do you think was up with the prisoner thing?
@@arishkhan5918 I don’t know because the initial promotional material showed his mugshots ; his face was all bruised up Making me things he may not have had his powers or something. Him getting confronted by the law is kinda like what happened in Blade Trinity but it would be an interesting storyline
I don't know why, but the western take on this game always kinda reminded me of the western take on the Super Mario Bros movie. Not necessarily in quality, but it's tone and how far it distances itself from its source material.
Multi Tails Power I see your point. The game's atmosphere is similar to the SMB movie, it was an ok game, not terrible by any means and Dante did get some new weapons and combos which the original didn't have. I liked it as its' own game, but you can literally spam the same moves and combos endlessly.
Looking back, it's kind-of clear from the things that were successful at the time that Capcom's idea of a 'Western' game basically was more along the lines of dark, serious, and gritty. A.K.A. stuff like the FPS's that were making big money from that fad taking off but would be horrible for any action fantasy game because it's incredibly hard to balance those aspects in that type of setting without making things feel very forced and generic.... NOT impossible, just hard. Yup, that's right. They literally tried to give Dante the type of dumb FPS reboot that people actively joked about back then, lol. I'm surprised they didn't try to make him bald as well or give him some form of sock hat to hide his hair. But at the same time, it could have been done if Ninja Theory's writing was up to the task.
I actually like this game. It has bad moments and good ideas. I'm kinda sad there's never going to be a continuation, it could have been great. All they had to do was branding it as a spin off and not a reboot, then we could have both universes and everyone would be happy.
tbh i’m over open world games, don’t have time for that to be honest now that i’m in college lol. i much rather player a linear game like dmc, re2 remake, etc
brandon mora I’m probably making more money at 18 then you’ve ever touched because school is taking all your time. All it took was 8 weeks of classes to become a realtor
DmC: Devil May Cry was my first entry in the series, despite me already knowing it wasn't a part of the original series. I have now played DMC 5 and consider DMC V a better game, but... The reboot one was still a fun, action packed game with a lot of unique personality. Sure, not the best game of all time, but a fun little romp.
Apparently Hideaki Itsuno wanted to make a DmC sequel more than DMC5: “I really wanted to make a DmC: Devil May Cry 2, after the first one. I was really pumped up to do it, and then that didn’t happen. So… when it came time to make a new game, we said, alright, let’s make Devil May Cry 5."
Capcom must have liked DmC in some aspect since they let them put Classic Dante's outfit in the game and then in the DMC4 special edition they gave Dante DmC Dante's color scheme as an extra skin. and how Nero's new design is similar to DmC Dante
@@Liberator130 I actually understand Itsuno's liking of DmC. The style and art of DmC is really great and wanting to make a new storyline for the Devil May Cry franchise.
DmC surely has some great aspect in it. The "newbie friendly" gameplay and excellent level designs. But yeah, i hate to play as an angsty emo teenager through those great things. I'm kinda sad that DMC 5 didn't implement those excellent level designs, and as the result, the stages look kinda monochromatic.
This comment section in a nutshell: "I know this is the first part of two, but let me tell about all the things you *missed* even though you bring them up in the second video."
Man, that point about Capcom scapegoating their outsourcing as their reason that "Japan is the future" is so spot on! I mean, yeah, in a way the outsourcing was a problem, but it was more the way they handled it. They wanted to outsource, but then still push each team to limits without just giving them time.
I'm a fan of both the original and the reboot, I really enjoyed the darker and grittier interpretation, though it's sad that Capcom pushed so hard for NT to make something so different. I wonder how well the game would have been received if NT would have been allowed to do what they originally wanted to do...
While it’s fun to imagine that scenario I’m happy that DmC turned out so well as it did. Corporate interference in creative projects often don’t. Ninja Theory did the best they could with the hand they were dealt and made a banger game.
You know, looking back on this video after DMC5's release. It's funny that the main issue fans had with Donte at the beginning was him looking like a, "emo kid". And then years later V suddenly rolls up onto the scene and suddenly becomes a fan favorite. XD
People feared that DINO would be an emo kid based on pre-release stuff, but what we actually got was far worse: an utterly unlikable tryhard who thinks he's cooler than he really is, which is the antithesis of Dante. Meanwhile, V being an actual emo kid perfectly matched his role as Vergil's weakened, discarded humanity, and the fact that he somehow manages to still be likeable (despite being a scrawny nerd who quotes 18th-century poetry to empower his edgy Pokemon) is a goddamn miracle.
Well, there is a difference between being emo and edgy. V is only emo because of his appearance; his personality was really humble, he was fearful of dying, had a great dynamic friendship with Griffon, loved poetry and classical music, etc. Reboot Dante... he's just an annoying asshole, smoked a lot, and... well that pretty much sums up his character, who was supposed to be a reboot of a beloved character
Originally I thought this game was going to be about some government program trying to make a half demon, with the scene of Dante hanged up in the room being a psychological torture method to turn him into the the Demon Hunter Dante. Had that been the story and the character was forced to take on the name Dante as a secret project I think it would have been accepted better and explains why he doesn't have white hair at the start, also it would have been a more serious story instead of the really cringy writing we got.
OG Dante does drink, but he doesn't smoke because he doesn't like the smell (or something like that) You can see his alcoholism in DMC1 semi canon prequel novel, DMC3 prequel manga, his office in the anime and DMC5 which has several (empty?) bottles.
I really enjoyed DmC for different reasons as to why I enjoyed the others, it was refreshing to see the same series through the lense of another company
@@EuroMIX2 True. The difference thought is that Shattered Memories was clearly made by people who had a deep respect for the Silent Hill series and wanted to do justice by its fans, whereas DmC was helmed by a director with no respect for what came before, leaving it feeling less like a DMC game and more like some edgy fanfiction.
The problem is, it's called DMC. If it was called anything else, it probably would have been more liked. I've always been of the opinion that a game should be judged on its own. It's fine to say "it's not as good as DMC 1-4", but don't go calling the game bad just because it changed stuff. The same thing, though to a lesser extent, happened with Assassin's Creed when Origins came out. There were a lot of people bitching about the game, calling it bad, just because it changed the gameplay. It was closer to a Witcher 3 style game with stealth tacked on. Thing is, it was actually a really good game if you took it as its own thing, and didn't try to hate it simply because it wasn't AC2. Same thing happened with other AC games like Black Flag, where it might not have been an amazing AC game, but it was a great pirate game with the AC engine. Or similarly, AC Syndicate where people bitched about it being too modern and having a grappling hook that took away the need to freerun. Syndicate was great, it just changed things up and people threw a big ol massive hissy fit about it. Aaand, same goes for DmC here. Was it a great DMC game? No. Was it a decent and fun GAME? Yeah. I guarantee if they called this game "Vigil SwordDancer" or something, many more people would have liked it.
@@NoahDaArkThat’s not true at all. They constantly talked about how things like Gun Canceling and JC were important to get right and wanted to stay close to the source material until Capcom forced their hand.
No matter how pissed off fans were, DmC still did it's job which was to make more people interested in this series. I think NT did the best they could with what Capcom told them to do, I think it's an awesome and unique take on the DMC universe.
Just my 2 cents? You can't piss on the fanbase of a long standing franchise and then cry like a child when they rip your game to shreds. Because their promotion basically attacked the original games. And then when the game wasn't up to standard, they sobbed the fans were mean. Because yeah, the game is not bad, but it's not even close to what you would expect from a Devil May Cry game. And the fact Bayonetta was floating around as the second coming of DMC... yup. Not a good look.
@@PrinceSoph Don't compare Ninja theory with shitty platinum games. Ninja theory are masters of action hack and slash. They developed enslaved, heavenly sword and Hellblade. All of which had good hack and slash gameplay with crisp and beautiful Animations. Unlike the shitty Platinum games. You actually can see shits that you are preforming. Unlike Bayonetta where the action is too fast af. I have played DMC 5, DmC and DMC 4 SE. DMC 5 is a cool polished game. It sure had diversity. I loved the graphics. The boss fights. The destructible environments. The devil breakers. The moderate replay value. Photo mode. But it was too short. DmC has an average length, it is one of the best hack and slash game that i have ever played. The boss battles in this game are badass. The heavy metal sound track was too good, it left me with an adrenaline pump. The theme of the story was actually good like Angry joe said, but the execution wasn't near perfect . And i didn't liked or hated the reboot Dante. The level design in DmC was awesome and refreshing. It didn't back track to the same fucking location 10 times like. In DMC 5. The graphics of DmC still holds up to this day. DMC 4 SE by far has the best story. (DMC 5 has the worst. /Stupid sibling rivalry ) And there are shit tons of moves and weapons in DMC 4 SE. I loved the different playable characters like trish and lady rather than neo and dante. It had fine boss battles. *So in conclusion, it's ok if you are hating DmC for the right reasons. You may haven't liked the story, the plot, characters, the cocky attitude of Donte etc* But saying that it won't come close to old dmcs which were released a long time ago, shows your hatred. It shows that you are an ignorant. Bye. Peace
@@doge2629 does it change the fact they shitted on the original fanbase and then cried when said fanbase snapped back? I am not saying DmC is bad. It's just not good enough to counter the fact they disrespected the people that came before them.
@@doge2629 you may not like Platinum games, but their work is a foundation of the genre as a whole. And what pissed a lot of people was their attitude when the game was good. But not perfect
That's the thing that I take from this and I wish I knew long ago. The thing that I need to understand is one, why did the developer lash out at the fans? Fans are stupid, don't get me wrong, but if the developer in charge wanted to hold a higher ground, he should've went the humility way, which is the time tested best strategy to both salvage your name, reputation, in case your product stinks, or to hold a better position and be seen in a better light by the people, in case your detractors are full of shit. This is the thing that Galvanized the DMC fanbase against NT and DmC DMC, if it's another thing to add to Capcom's list of Fuck ups, fair enough, but I wonder if it was Capcom's idea, I somehow think it really was just the creative director's arrogance showing, maybe even in a moment of weakness. My reasoning, Capcom are stupid, they wanted this game this way after all, but even Capcom isn't THAT stupid, because It's Just Bad Marketing and BAD PR and the history of this game's creation shows that they cared about that, enough to make changes to curb some of the more outlandish decisions with the game. I don't believe they'd be that stupid especially after responding by back pedaling quite a bit from the initial reaction, it just wouldn't make any sense of them to turn to such a 180 as a production company that sells games.
DmC was not a bad game, it was actually really good, but I understand the frustration from fans when it comes to it being different than the other titles.
Not a DMC fan but this game was my first dmc game and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Yes the protagonist was at first an unlikeable angry brat but in the end you realise he’s actually not a bad person and has a decent heart. Overall, I enjoyed the game for what it was, great gameplay, story and some of the most beautiful graphics I’ve seen in a while.
Yes exactly!!! That's the thing! You haven't played any DMC game before playing this one, so you didn't have the image of the previous ones in your head. That's where a lot of the hate comes in, because of the DMC name. If you go into this game while keeping in mind not to directly connect it to the old DMC games it's actually a good game!
Same here, this game was my introduction to Devil May Cry as a whole and to be honest, I think the old Dante was so much more cringy. So cringy in fact, that I couldn't finish the old games because I just didn't want to play as this guy anymore.
It was my first DMC game to and it was one of the first hack&Slash games I ever played and tbh when I played the game as a teenager I thought thisDante was the coolest guy imaginable. at the time to me he was badass I liked the character so much that I got a Haircut similar to his. I really love this game even if it starts getting a bit bland in the second half.
@@fxxalaba3836 And it's perfectly fine to have your own personal opinion. Don't let others saying that it's a bad game change your opinion. In the end, it's just an opinion. You liking the game is the most important thing in the end, but that's not to say that if someone told you to play a game and you didn't like it in the first moments that you shouldn't give it a chance. Sorry I'm just saying these because of recent experiences 😂💔
I'm not against DmC Devil May Cry because it's really good game & deserves a continuation BUT I'm against the substitution of DMC by DmC Devil May Cry. The fact that DMC is over without even a deserved end story is what pissed me off back at 2010, I mean, there is unfinished business with Vergil, Nero, Sparda, Dante... the whole story, instead, we got the "no one asked" reboot -_- just because the sales weren't satisfying -_- Like I said, I'm not against a DmC Devil May Cry 2, WHILE there is a continue to the original series, Devil May Cry 5,6,7... It would be the first case in history of gaming industry (think so) if this would happen - no one would be pissed if things would go this way.
Capcom's weakness is foresight. Look at it like this Monster Hunters only makes minor changes yet the gameplay and "story" are basically the same. Yet for ALL other IP's they have to get edgy with it even when people didn't ask for it. Just because they wanted too much money for sells when Capcom also knows they don't advertise their games well either.
Heeeeellllllll no this trash doesn't deserve a sequel, maybe if capcim wants sell the game at a lost AGAIN (which seems to be a fetish of theirs these days) then they'll happy burn money for a sequel which they'll never see a return on. Let it die.
Why didn't this video ever mention the games director, producer and gaming journalist attacking fans for their concerns about the games direction? There's literally article, after article, after article that says that people only hate it because of Dante's hair.
Aczie042 because he wants to paint fans are irrational and neo nazi sympathisers. I'll guarantee you he'll pull that stupid petition for white house to pull all copies that had over 7 signatures which is nothing but if it helps painting fans in negative light, he'll do it in heart beat.
Sckarton I wouldn't say that, about Foxcade. He seems to genuinely enjoy the series and the community around it. But I do believe that he's emphasizing way too much on the "death threats" coming from the fans. I'm not condoning this kind of behavior, but, I don't think it was as prevalent as a lot gaming journalist and the director would have us believe. Tameem Antoniades, is still directing games, and Ninja Theory is still developing games. My point is, if these threats were credible they would have went to the police. The people sending the "threats" would of been found, charged, and, arrested, end of story. But, that didn't happen! All these, supposed, death threats that Ninja Theory were receiving was used as a publicity tool, to spur the gaming press to shit on the fans, and build a narrative that the DMC community is "toxic". And it seems like we will never recover from this..., unless there is a real DMC5. DmC: Devil May Cry legacy will forever be the press, the games director and producer shiting on fans, "because of the hair" and a game that divided a community.
Aczie042 which is why i think fox is dishonest person who wants to shit on the fans but still appear as legitimate fan of series. He's faker just like journalists who shit on people who like games.
Oh shit, I've been found. I've been faking being a fan for several years just so that I can defend I game I barely enjoy from a develop I'm not that invested in but sympathize with since I've had to sort through 5 years of a good portion of fans shitting on the studio and director in a rather toxic manner in order to research this video and the next one, which is going to be going over the studios negative reaction to the criticism and how it effected the game. Good job good sir.
Foxcade funny you say that when we have a video that show us nothing of the insults NT threw at the fans and their CEO who openly he'd harm a guy for asking to fix a glitch he found in the demo and hopes he'll fix it by time game get released (which it didn't get fixed and made it to ps4 version of game). You say something but video telld us something differently.
"It's nowhere as bad as the fandom makes it out to be and it's not as amazing as the supporters make it sound" That pretty much sums up my opinion of this game. I enjoyed the gameplay and the environments but the story was weak and changed too much of the source material.
Even most of the detractors admit it's not necessarily a bad game, it's a perfectly competent hack n slash. It just happens to share a name with one of the all time great hack n slash games, so it comes with higher expectations.
Name change can really make an impact. If they just introduced him as a different character in the same universe, they could have gotten away with it. Probably. Because, if you obscure the character and name, and just look at the game, the gameplay seems pretty solid, and worthy of a DMC handle.
I agree and it's a shame if dmc dmc was a spinoff dmc game instead of a reboot it would be praised because it's one of the better hack and slash games out there
@@tjthegreat7 No targeting, couldn't lock on... Rendundant. Super easy to SSS? For fans of the genre sure. I'll admit the game was easier than the older ones, but I wouldn't say it was easy to master. And if we wanna look past the gameplay, the world and level design was stellar. The story was decent, certainly better than the original DMC. Lastly, while many people may not be a fan of the dialogue and characters in this game, they were actually incredibly modern and western takes Dante's attitude. The game was full of genius moments and solid gameplay that was easy enough for new fans to grasp, which is kinda the point of a reboot. Was it a good DMC game? As a spinoff, I think so. Was it perfect? Not particularly. Truthfully if they had simply changed Dante's name to some other generic shit, and changed the title Devils R Us or something, no one would have complained so hard.
@@TheGumdropButton "The story was decent, certainly better than the original DMC." Wait, what? How does this weak-ass, generic social commentary is any better storytelling than either of classic DMC games?
The original Dante, I’ve heard described as the Will Smith of games. He doesn’t drink, smoke or cuss but he’s cool in spite of that. It helps that Dante is generally a massive dork as well.
The biggest issue is the lead designer, Tameem, was a narcissist. Made Dante look like himself (Tameem) and did not handle any criticism well at all. Was very hostile to anyone that didn't absolutely live the game. The next mistake is, the Dante in this game was essentially a rebooted Dante with Nero's personality. Let's give the Devil his dues, though... Gameplay was amazing and the DLC was worth every penny. Both Dante and Vergil had amazing character development over their respective story arcs. Dante started as apathetic and self destructive, but became more rational and humane. Vergil started as anxious and dare I say, whiny, but became ruthless and cunning in the DLC. I still love the original DMC way more than this game and I feel DMC5 blows this one tf out of the water, but this game was no slouch by any means. Very enjoyable if you play with an open mind.
I'm actually a really hardcore devil may cry fan And I must say DmC: Devil may cry was not a bad game I liked the Vergil DLC that made me interested in what the continuation to the story would be
DmC is still good as a hack and slash game, some solid gameplay. But mostly i was dissapointed on the direction capcom took for the dmc universe Im glad they fix it all with DMC5
I took a chance to play the reboot, and what I realize is that if you just erase the story of the game and just go along blindly with it, it’s such a fun and amazing experience in mainly gameplay and play forming, and honestly if Nero had the kind of fighting style the dmc dante had, I’d have more fun playing him
Naw, it's at best a mediocre hack and slash game bought down by stupid design decisions (no lock-on with combined with enemies that auto-parry certain weapons, dumbed down style system where Overdrive is objectively better than almost every other move, too many fliers, only ever hard because of a curious refusal to drop health, etc)
I liked DMC, I honestly believe it was a quality game. I thought it fixed a lot of the plot holes from the original series, and the combat system was the most fluid it had ever been. I think it was having to live up to the expectations of the original series that killed it. If they would have created new characters in place of Dante/Vergil, do you think it would have gotten so much backlash? I would have loved to see a sequel where Vergil gets to come back for revenge, but sadly, that may never happen.
"He looks like an emo kid. He's probably gonna cry in the middle of a battle." You mean like grown ass men do when they see a chatacter design they don't like?
All the crying is how the game got called a reboot last minute because Capcom didn't want a bad game in their name... Now fast forward to dmc 5 it's the same playstyle and artstyle as the game that was SUPPOSED TO BE BAD ...
@@natemakesbeats2138 I mean, Dmc 5 was just a lot of added story that didn't matter at the end and was made just so they could recycle the Dante vs Vergil theme. Nero is changed but it became just a copycat version of Dante with a inferiority complex. Story wise the game is pretty shit. If dmc 5 came out instead of Dmc: Devil may cry the game would be considered more of the same.
@@Loveafterglows Say what you want, but DMC5 took what series already had and evolved it in basically every area where it needed to evolve. It gave the series visual upgrade to make it rival any other action game currently out there, had three playable characters, each of whom is mechanically complex enough to build a full game around and weaved together a storyline that wraps up basically all the threads that were left dangling from the previous entries, all the while continuing to embrace the love for the fun of video games as a medium. I'd say it is a competent showcase for why this series became and remains the undisputed king of the character action-genre.
Disagree with calling Dragon's Dogma a masterpiece. But it was a really nice game, and for trying out something very different, the flaws it had can be forgiven. If only a handful of small issues get fixed, I would totally buy a Dragon's Dogma 2.
/s no wai thats a joke! he clearly think he is faster than dantehh!! lololol /s/whoosh *hint: i use lot of indicators in case 'lol' isn't clear enough sign for you
@coco nut I like a challenge as much as the next guy, but not every game, not even every Devil May Cry game, needs to be DMC 3 hard. Get the fuck over yourself.
I loved DMC, still do. I’m not going to give this video a thumbs up or down. Emotions can be vary toxic literately. I hope the science behind bad habits is made much more aware and noticed. Now, yesterday, and always.
"how many western protags could you see riding a motorcycle up a collapsing tower and then using the bike to slice through demons midair" have you never seen army of darkness did you somehow avoid every movie paul verhoeven ever made
Well now he ride demonic motorcycle with cowboy hat and he does moonwalk MJ-style with said cowboy hat How many movies do you see pulling that shit off?
DmC isn't a bad game. Unlike DMC4, it was a finished product. What I didn't like was that Dante's space control is outright ridiculous. Round Trip is infinite allowing you to lock down anyone that can be stopped by it. Aquila's delay combos drag everyone in, the ax can launch multiple enemies effortlessly, and the Devil Trigger renders all non boss enemies literal punching bags. Vergil, while lacking the space control Dante has, is an absolute juggernaut with his EZ mode Spiral Swords that are not used in his other moves, his teleport. and ability to basically cancel any attack with a teleport. You can basically loop Rapid Slash as much as you see fit. Their attacks lack impact completely. They did have a good mix of enemies. Some being standard grunts, air types providing aerial support, and the witch who can both attack, teleport, and transfer her barrier to other enemies. They also had the heavy brute types and the elite swordsman enemies. What I hated was the complete removal of taunts and next to no actual battlecries in the game. Taunts and battlecries and a lot of personality to these characters. I own both DmC DE and DMC4 SE. While I love Vergil, Trish and Lady are fun, Dante is still the hardest character to master and Nero gets boring quick, DMC4's campaign is straight ass. No, Bloody Palace is not a worthy sub. To me, DMC4's campaign is so fucking atrocious, I have more hours in DmC4 DE than DMC4 SE. DMC4 needs a proper sequel. They have great characters. Nero needs to have combos tied to his Devil Bringer and an actual second weapon.
I don't know if you heard, but the the original plan with what I like to call the Dante Trigger DmC was the longer you stayed airborne the longer it would last. Considering how easy it is not to touch the ground it was probably for the best they ditched that idea. Also I refused to call it a Devil Trigger as I wonder is that really the best they could do!? Its so lazy! I mean he's a half angel, half demon and that was all they could come up with!
Hey, more DT time for maintaining aerial combos? Great idea. I would be okay with that. Problem is enemy step is too damn easy in DmC. In the demo alone I was able to lift the enemy to the limit of the "sky". Compared to DMC3/4, I have more trouble getting 2-3 enemy steps in a combo. DmC was just made too damn easy for it's own good. The DT was lame because it didn't even make sense. Dante is red and Vergil is blue because that's the colors they wear and you can see that color even in their attacks. DmC Dante and Vergil make no damn sense. Especially with DMC4 have DT buffed moves and DT only moves.
I get there's a lot of hate for DmC as I was there from the beginning but honestly DmC is an okay game. It just doesn't bring anything to the table. Its a game that basically would not be a loss if it never existed. I mean DMC2 was shit but it at least resulted in DMC3. DmC resulted in nothing.
@Dante: The Demi-God Making Nero look like an actual punk makes sense, considering his character, and makes him stand out more from the rest of the cast, especially Dante, the one character he was criticised for looking too alike. Donte, on the other hand, stripped away a lot of iconic features of the OG Dante for an overall more boring design. He just looks like your generic young adult. Nothing about his design tells you what he's like and he doesn't have any standout features like the white hair or the crinsom-red trenchcoat, OR the spiky hair. Plus, Nero also has photorealism as an advantage, since you can now easily recognise him from his more subtle facial features. It's not a double-standard, Nero just wears it much better.
I hate how most of everyone immediately says the story of DMC is weak and/or not good. For me this is very false, from the 1st all the way to 4, (5 not being out at the time) were awesome and pulled me in rather quickly. I absolutely love the lore and the characters, seeing them tackle new problems and face new villains always gets me hyped. Plus the story is much deeper than one could think. Not only that but they even secretly added Vergil in the first game without telling much about his backstory. Also, Sparda’s whole tale being up for interpretation is a very cool way to increase the mysterious nature surrounding the series as a whole.
Quite loved and enjoyed this game, and it introduced me to the DMC series. Never played an ACT game until this one, have to say it is definitely suitable for a newbie compared with other DMC games. As much as I enjoyed this game, I didn't like the characters from the beginning. The OG Dante is way more unique, charming, and likable than this emo teenager Dante. The storyline and narrative is far from satisfying too, but it is not the strong suit of the original series either, so I can't complain much. I totally understand the fans' hatred for this game in retrospect, though I personally will never dislike it.
@Dante: The Demi-God it's ok to admit that game sucks (gameplay wise) while knowing that it did some major contribution to the series. But if you are talking about how little time to develop the game had because the first director spent months on the game only to make a single move, then yes, I think it deverse some respect. But the game still sucks.
The idea that after 4, they didn't wanna continue DMC is nuts to me. Hindsight is 20/20 but how do you make a very polished but undercooked master piece like DmC 4 and instead of thinking 'we need to tie up loose ends like Dante's relationship with vergil or Spadra's story betraying his people' you go: We gotta put this shit down and revive it.
This game would be much better as a new IP with no ties to the "old" DMC series. That way, it'd avoid the backlash and even receive some praise for stepping out of the "God of War clone" frame so many action games fell into.
What I mean is that many Western action games during the late PS2-PS3 era looked more like GoW than DMC, focusing on spectacle and/or violence over mechanically deep combat. This includes NT's own title, Heavenly Sword. It'd be kind of refreshing to see a game that went the other way and encouraged the players to use some of its more advanced mechanics rather than button-mashing their way through the title.
The Grin Reaper Seen it already. DmC at least tried to make something different. It didn't succeed and tripped over its own legs in so many places, from technical aspects to game design, but at the very least... well, it tried. It's lightyears away from Platinum or DMC3-4 levels of depth, but it's a tiny step in the right direction, I guess. Too bad it didn't go anywhere.
Tbh that prison backstory and that tone would have been more badass with all the smoking and shit I wish they could do another game with that tone, maybe for the fans who loved the new reboot.
It's funny to look back and see all of the people negatively reacting to how Dante looks all look the exact same as him. The type that would have a friend like that in their friend group if not identical look alike.
Let me say game itself wasn't bad, story... well Dante felt too much like a edgy jerk, but feels like with some smart writing and serious time put into production eventual sequel could shape him up into character closer to what he was, just some good character development, still feels like Capcom would need to see it 1st
tbh, in my oppinion dante was the best thing. .... compared to everything else. I'm an avid defender of DmC, but one thing that made me cringe constantly was the story and dialogue. (loved the world, hated the pretentiousness) prime offender being Vergil and all that Nephelim-stick. I .. kinda liked Dante though, and while I regard original dante as a legend, the reboot made him more relatable. great voice actor, strange directing.
yeah, i think he wasn't that bad, yet still too much on this "ow, the edge" note, the idea with Nephelims also isn't that bad, i mean it opens up doorway to introduce other interesting and playable characters as i highly doubt Dante and Vergil are only ones who managed to stay alive even if the main baddie of the game was trying to get rid of all of them, anyways i think this reboot still has potential for sequel, just need good story writing and character development to accompany the gameplay
I hope the next part goes into Capcom and NT's reaction and insults to the fan base, because that was a huge part of the actual controversy not even mentioned here.
Floof Gaming want to see the death threats? Search for "Emo may Cry" and you see what death threats they were talking about. Maybe you should the article instead of just the fake headline.
biphronte More than 2 Million Copies sold out is a flop in you'r eyes ? (2 Million without the digital sales). Yes 2 Millionen is still not that much but the game was not a flop. Sry but we can even disagree by this one ;- )
Alex Williams And since Devil May Cry 5 was just shown at E3 I doubt they’ll ever go back to DMC:Devil May Cry series again (or at least anytime soon).
@@Manafighter To be fair, it isn't like the other Devil May Cry titles were that amazingly written either. People play Devil May Cry for the action, the story is a bonus. Going into DMC and complaining about the story is like going into a steak place and complaining about them seasoning the meat.
@@Corthmic but it had more depth and it was pretty good but had some plot holes, and when i think of a good moment is when in dmc 3 vergil decides to pick his mother amulet than his father sword it shows that he loved his mother and wanted and still wants to protect her
Corthmic 3 was genuinely well written and fit the structure of the game perfectly, i fucking dare you to play that game and then tell me story adds nothing to an action game
ForYourViewingPleasure Maybe if it had no relations to the Devil May Cry series and was its own stand alone game it would’ve done better or at the very least wouldn’t have gotten as much criticism.
I honestly wish they would have kept the original concept of Dante in DMCDMC. What I mean is, in the original teaser trailer, new Dante looked like he was even younger (pre-teen), had a raspy voice, and smoked cigarettes. He actually put his cigarette out on a demon's head in the trailer. It seemed like the game was going to have a much "darker" take on the son of Sparda. We see him chained to a wall in a prison with a camera watching him, this angry kid with hot demon blood coursing through his veins. I was actually looking forward to seeing this new angle because, although he was younger, he came off as a much more "rated M" type character. I felt it was going to be a more hard-to-stomach style in regard to violence and brutality. The trailer actually made me want the reboot because I wanted to see where it would go. But sadly, the version we got turned out to be very different. He had a normal voice, was at least as old as DMC3 Dante, and came off like he was trying too hard to be edgy in order to keep up with his red-coated superior version. Not to mention, being chained up never happened and he didn't smoke, also he wasn't wearing the bad ass goth necklaces we saw in the teaser either. DMCDMC wasn't any more "mature" than any of the originals. Where Devil May Cry always felt somewhat like an anime, DMCDMC feels more like an American-ized version of an anime lol.
I just think of this as alternate universe dante when I played. Figured another in the regular series would come back so I never really hated it. I honestly loved most of it...till I was stuck doing the same shit over and over. When its moving and introducing new enemies and abilities it was fun. Especially that damn Scythe. Hell Even the hair joke with the wig in the beginning got me laughing.
If they introduce a multiverse into DMC it can have a major character growth for the DmC gang by having the seasoned OG cast humble and mentor them. Also having reboot Dante admit that the white hair thing is cool could definitely mend the wound a bit.
Yes! Capcom wanted the changes, not Ninja Theory, Ninja Theory wanted to keep him similar to the original, so people should stop hating on NT, if anyone deserves the hate for changing Dante, it’s Capcom.
Darth Surma and eventually it caught up to Capcom with the whole near-bankruptcy thing that happened a few years ago, if it weren't for Monster Hunter World, i don't know where Capcom would be right now. Karma is ruthless.
Yeah, I remember back in 2015, Capcom was almost bankrupt. If it weren't for REmaster went Multiplat and DMC4SE with Monster Hunter, Capcom would be SO DEAD right now.
This franchise didn't need a reboot. We wanted the REAL Dante, Vergil.. even Nero. And the atmosphere of the game, although being original, it wasn't "Devil May Cry". But man, the gameplay was LIT and there's no debate on that, and the story wasn't that bad. It is a pretty good game, with one of the best combat systems of the past generation.
RandomUser221 We dont understand why youre so enraged when DmC is already dead. Its been 6 years, man. No one is telling you are wrong. Its just that at this point, you are a bit over the top.
I think companies need to learn that fans get REALLY attached to the appearance of characters, because evidently, fans always get pissed when the characters deviate from their established looks. Dante's "trademark look" is white hair and a red coat, so the new iteration of Dante should have kept that. Even if I ignore what his past character design was, the new Dante design just felt kind of uninspired: if you put him in a line up with a bunch of NPCs, I wouldn't be able to tell that he's the main character.
Addicted to this video. Strong points about actual reasons behind what happened behind DmC. If it's worth anything, look at the latest game- it's marked "5". It's like they didn't even consider DmC to be part of the same continuity. Love it. 7:01, no, wait. Save for how they look, the fact they both wield huge swords and have demonic powers, Dante and Nero are NOTHING alike. Dante fights for himself- he is OK with being alone, he matured a long time ago and (yes, even during the chronological order dmc3 appears in) and does not seek anybody for himself or cares to affiliate himself with anything. Nero is an insecure, whiny, teenage boy with a crush on a damsel- he hates the world that he understands because the people who are part of it, don't get it, but he loves it too because part of that world is a girl he cares about. They. Are. Completely. Different. I think what you mean is that Nero is under developed. Which he is- because they tried something different from Dante. Harken back to Devil May Cry; Dante is introduced - he is this insanely over the top cool guy who spouts smooth/cheesy lines while apparently dispassionately slaughtering demons. He appears alone, aloof and unaffected. The story arc progresses and we see a TINY bit into his past - he had a mother- she died, he dealt with it and moved on. He is strong because HAS to be. Nero is introduced - we know nothing of his family- only that he is treated like some kind of pariah, except by a childhood friend he obviously cares about. He will do anything to protect her. And that's all we had for Nero. Devil May Cry games have never been about the story-but even when you look at these two paragraphs - you can see huge differences. I think people were primed to see more of Nero and Vergil, waiting for Capcom to draw this missing link between Dante, his friends, Nero, and his only apparent family, Vergil. Instead we got a reboot where Dante is an idiot, Vergil is a terrorist, and there's a witch Girl we don't care about. DmC Devil may Cry is not a bad game, but given that little bit of mystical story development / progression that we had with previous games; I think fans were insulted that it was all scrapped aside- for something we didn't want to begin with. Come back to now- and see why DMC5 is such a huge hit. Look at who is back in the spotlight; Nero, Dante, Vergil, Lady, Trish, and even whatsherface (Nero's Damsel)... Boom, Capcom went for the nostalgia and it worked.
It was an interesting video, but I believe you missed out on a large part as to *why* the fanbase became increasingly hostile toward Ninja Theory. Not that I can blame you, as all the evidence is on Tameem's deleted twitter. While the death threats were out of line, yes, Tameem Antoniades spent nearly the entire development time using his twitter account to insult the fanbase, tell people that they basically suck, that the old fans are worthless and this isn't their game, reminding people that he's having dreams about being the worst game dev on the planet, and blaming every fan for making their project fail. It got so bad, Tameem had to disable his twitter, because every day he's say something and make subtle remarks about how it was basically the fans fault that his game was going to fail before it even got off the ground. So really, I don't think it's entirely fair to push a lot of the blame on Capcom for their decisions, then Tameem was effectively a PR nightmare. Tameem has a history of managing to lie to Sony, convincing the that his crap games were triple A quality, when they never were, and normally fail both comercially, and critically. Never mind the fact that DmC: Devil may Cry was the first game they actually wrote in house, without outsourcing all their stuff. Yes, Capcom failed horribly in vetting Ninja Theory, and the whole thing stinks of this being a favor owed behind the scenes, but it lies mostly on Tameem for being such a dick to the fanbase.
@@DonnyKirkMusic What I found polarizing is that defends Ninja Theory despite Temeem's arrogance during the developpment yet claims that Team Ninja "ruined" Other M when all the problems who can be attiributed to Other M can be placed on Yoshio Sakamoto. Double Standard much?
Well that was not meant to be a scathing critique, just a snide joke. You're taking this all a bit too seriously, especially when part 2 is entirely dedicated to critiquing what NT did wrong themselves
It's all good, I guess I never specified in the video itself that this was mostly about Capcoms decisions, so I get the thought that I'm trying to create some spin on it all.
@James Chris it's one thing to insult the people who threatened his life. It's another to place them in a group with others who did nothing wrong, and then proceed to insult everyone. Not one person. Everyone, and last I checked, I'm a Devil May Cry fan, and I don't remember sending death threats to Ninja Theory. Yet they Tameem wanted to be a dick.
I've said it once and I'll say it a million times until corporations understand it: When continuing, adapting, rebooting or otherwise creating content for an established IP you should always make sure that whoever is making the changes our first and foremost fans of the originals. Doing so will, 8 out of 10 times, result in minimal to non-existent fan backlash.
Though if you think it's going to be a 30 minute video of my dumping on NT, I'm sorry but you will likely be a bit disappointed.
no problem foxcade. I really like the dmc series... im just glad you made videos like these!
My bad, I misconstrued what you said
That's understandable, I should have phrased that better because I can see where you are coming from. It's all good though :)
I like to think of this game as a parallel universe, makes it easier
which actually it is, but there was a rumor says DmC was supposed to replace the original dmc and they wanted to continue making DmC 2 instead of DMCV, which is why the fans kinda blow up to hate this game
and i also hate this dante/vergil tbh, gameplay good but the trades was story and character which is not good
Sure, if the parallel universe was complete trash

Ninja Theory did the best they could with the hand they were dealt and made a banger game.
that concept art of dante with the black mohawk looked so sick
I like how 2's such a well-contained story that you can just kinda pop it where ever ya need it to be anymore
You know, looking back on this video after DMC5's release. It's funny that the main issue fans had with Donte at the beginning was him looking like a, "emo kid". And then years later V suddenly rolls up onto the scene and suddenly becomes a fan favorite. XD
I would argue that because he isnt annoying and also had a more cooler design
Maybe cause he's not a "reinterpretation" of iconic character?
maybe it is because V isn't named dante
So... Raiden in MGS2?
Ya pretty much.
i agree whole heartedly. I loved the world of what we ended up with, but hated the fact, that everything felt very pretentious.
Dante has 2 traits:
1. Doesn't smoke or drink
2. White hair
Those are literally the only 2 check boxes and they fucked them both up
OG Dante does drink, but he doesn't smoke because he doesn't like the smell (or something like that)
You can see his alcoholism in DMC1 semi canon prequel novel, DMC3 prequel manga, his office in the anime and DMC5 which has several (empty?) bottles.
I really enjoyed DmC for different reasons as to why I enjoyed the others, it was refreshing to see the same series through the lense of another company
It's sort of like Shattered Memories to the OG Silent Hill; alternative interpretation on the same concept.

Fans are quite pathetic really. Calling a video game character you don't like "gay" is not a sign of you living a good life.
@@kpjlflsknflksnflknsa donte is gey
There were some weird gameplay decisions, but "Devil May Cry 2" is still the worst in the entire series (including the Adopted emo child, DmC).
I’m probably the only person who actually likes Devil May Cry 2. The dialogue was... something but I enjoyed running on walls and the controls
blackbone02 Should I mentioned Lucia?
I miss wall running too. I also wish they'd bring back the enemy surfing too.
agreed although i despise DmC it is a decentish game but a bad reboot dmc2 is kinda a train wreck
I liked Lucia’s twirl knife throw 🔪
You may haven't liked the story, the plot, characters, the cocky attitude of Donte etc*
But saying that it won't come close to old dmcs which were released a long time ago, shows your hatred.
@@MrMolotow97 yes i know the new dante is so cringe so much cringe that earth will fall
*Looks at E3 and the rumours*
Please Capcom just this once!
I agree with you. It would be like Mega Man Network or Megaman legends.
Let it die.
DmC does deserve a sequel! The ending almost begs for one.

Now that the dust has settled and 5 is here, that has become the overall general consensus about DmC

I'm actually a really hardcore devil may cry fan
And I must say DmC: Devil may cry was not a bad game I liked the Vergil DLC that made me interested in what the continuation to the story would be

But mostly i was dissapointed on the direction capcom took for the dmc universe
Im glad they fix it all with DMC5
Thank fucking god they didn’t leave us with the bad taste of the reboot in our mouths. It would’ve destroyed the franchise

"Unlike DMC4, it was a finished product"
AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Aaaah... no, no it really wasn't.
@Tyrannical - Finally, someone talking about gameplay for a change!
DmC resulted in nothing.
i find it funny that people complaining about his look, look like him.
Nope
Ehh no
Nero In dmc5 looks like him
@Dante: The Demi-God
Making Nero look like an actual punk makes sense, considering his character, and makes him stand out more from the rest of the cast, especially Dante, the one character he was criticised for looking too alike.
@@Skallva I suspect the reason they are making Nero stand out more is because he is going to be the main character of the franchise now.

I love all the dmc's so much. I think the reboot was an amazing action game. But it could never replace the originals.
What about DMC 2?
I actually enjoyed DmC lol. The swearing gets funny after a while.
I enjoyed all of the original Devil May Cry games except 2. The reboot was ok. It just didn’t feel like the same person.
I always see DmC as a 0 or a prequel to the series. 0-3-1-2-4-5, in my cannon head though
Lol right, he even threw on a white wig during one cutscene as a nod to the real Dante.
Dexter Hernandez dmc reboot
Could never be a prequel it doesn’t line up at all with anything in the series
@Dante: The Demi-God it's ok to admit that game sucks (gameplay wise) while knowing that it did some major contribution to the series.
But if you are talking about how little time to develop the game had because the first director spent months on the game only to make a single move, then yes, I think it deverse some respect.
But the game still sucks.
The idea that after 4, they didn't wanna continue DMC is nuts to me. Hindsight is 20/20 but how do you make a very polished but undercooked master piece like DmC 4 and instead of thinking 'we need to tie up loose ends like Dante's relationship with vergil or Spadra's story betraying his people' you go:
We gotta put this shit down and revive it.
I'm 50-50 though i much prefer the orginal series but i can acknowledge the reboot
Not amazing but I had fun playing it. Story and acting, meh, gameplay, fun, style, really cool.
Look, I'm trying not to be a bitter bitch and... I dunno, find some positives in here. People complain when I get bitter and negative.
Tbh that prison backstory and that tone would have been more badass with all the smoking and shit I wish they could do another game with that tone, maybe for the fans who loved the new reboot.
i just found your channel thank's to this video and i have to say, nice work! you deserve a lot more subs.
subscribing right now.
Don't expect a sequel any time soon.
"Skunk hair" made me lose it
"YOU JUST A HALLOWEEN COSTUME"
I hope the next part goes into Capcom and NT's reaction and insults to the fan base, because that was a huge part of the actual controversy not even mentioned here.
Floof Gaming want to see the death threats? Search for "Emo may Cry" and you see what death threats they were talking about. Maybe you should the article instead of just the fake headline.
It doesn't matter if the game is hated or loved, we can only say the game was a huge bomb twice (original release and remaster)
biphronte
More than 2 Million Copies sold out is a flop in you'r eyes ? (2 Million without the digital sales).
Yes 2 Millionen is still not that much but the game was not a flop.
Sry but we can even disagree by this one ;- )
Like Resident Evil 6, DmC was also considered a flop to CapCom. So there's that.
Alex Williams And since Devil May Cry 5 was just shown at E3 I doubt they’ll ever go back to DMC:Devil May Cry series again (or at least anytime soon).
Yeah, a game that caused people to send death threats doesn't matter if it's loved or hated.
You sure know a lot about important things, OP.
@@Potidaon that's sad actually because the time gap between 4 and 4 SE is bigger than the time between DmC and DmC SE 😂
This game was so underrated. Yes the dialogue sucks, but the gameplay and overall story were great.
And it looked so beautiful on the PS3 at the time. I actually got my boyfriend at the time into DMC because of it.
Well the story wasn't good i mean its just so dumb.
TO be honest i did like DMC's battle system. It was way more fluid than usual.
Shame the fluid was piss
Its not a terrible game but it does make a terrible first impression.
ForYourViewingPleasure Maybe if it had no relations to the Devil May Cry series and was its own stand alone game it would’ve done better or at the very least wouldn’t have gotten as much criticism.
THIS I can agree with. You have to play the full game to have a solid verdict on it (like everything).
But yeah; first impression was terrible.
those dudes that say dante looked emo. looked emo. im just throwing that out there. im with foxcade in this video
I bet Ninja Theory's Bayonetta would be like Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z.
_And some people would still defend that shit._
Your bet has no wager. Let alone, reason to exist other than fantasy speculations.
I wager you'll go on a excruciatingly drawn-out rant about this shitty DmC reboot and how it's better than DMC3 and 4
I go trough the 5 stages of grief every time i remember this game exists
When playing DmC, I never knew I liked taunting until I didn't have it.
I've never used a taunt.
@RandomUser221 chill dude lol
@RandomUser221 "chill" dude lol"
" *Writes a novel* "
1st. Thank you for this Retrospective. Love you FOX.
@@Foxcade I haven't watched Part 2 when I made this comment. Sorry about that.
I really enjoyed the reboot. It would have been nice to continue the original story but the reboot was fine for what it was imo
I've said it once and I'll say it a million times until corporations understand it:
When continuing, adapting, rebooting or otherwise creating content for an established IP you should always make sure that whoever is making the changes our first and foremost fans of the originals.
Doing so will, 8 out of 10 times, result in minimal to non-existent fan backlash.
