This is the first time I've seen a review actually critical of a bag after some real world use. In a landscape of youtubers that seem to use the bag once or twice over the course of two weeks and basically are making an ad for it, this is very refreshing.
I’ve been working almost every weekend in another city for the last 2 years, and 1,5 years with this bag. I do see where this review stems from, but I’m still very happy with my bag. Three reasons: #1 at the end of the day, every bag is a compromise. I have bags which are more comfortable and lighter, but they don’t protect my gear and are definitely not stovable. Get some lose some. In my use this really ticks all of the boxes, and is good compromise. #2 It does not like to be over packed. Once you accept this, it’s a lot more comfortable. #3 When you travel a lot, organization is everything. It just makes leaving the house a breeze. And with the small camera cube, my camera is always accessible.
I've had this bag for a few years and love all the features. I agree with the strap comfort annoyance that is mitigated with the waist strap. Love the security features (check the peak design video on that). I'm not using it as a camera or computer bag so my loads are lighter. Love the materials and features. I can see why people would bail on this bag though. More soft padding on the shoulder straps would solve 90% of my issues. Raw weight is on the heavy side; 4.5 lbs.
Your video review was a much-needed reality check, preventing me from falling into the same pitfalls I experienced with the Aer Travel Pack (33l). Could not agree more... and why I got this bag, along with the 35L duffle. The ability to move the packing/camera cubes between them with total ease. I'm going to grab the 65L on sale as a checked bag for cloths (never camera gear). The clamshell abilities are also more for photographers... you set the bag down to access and not put the side down that goes against your back. I love my travel backpack.
I watched another video video, where they said, that this backpack packs surprisingly little compared to the liters declared in comparison to an Osprey. So I ordered both for comparison, this one here and an Osprey Transporter Carry-On 44 for direct comparison before making my decision and I couldn‘t disagree more. This PeakDesign Travel Backpack 45 packs quite a bit more than the mentioned Osprey, I tried with the exact same things. Not sure, how everyone comes to the conclusion, that this backpack here is comparatively underwhelming in packing space, as from my impression it‘s the other way around?
Thanks for this review. Really like seeing critical stuff as well in this day and age of "everything's awesome". I'm considering on buying this PD 45L and even after this video I'm considering it still 😅 I think the annoyances you mentioned are things I can live with. Also I actually like the concept of the clamshell mechanism and I've had (cheapo) backbags with laptops against my back without any issue so I think my laptops going to be okay there.
I appreciate the critical review. As someone who is an amateur backpack enthusiast not every backpack feature is rainbows and sunshine., but no one ever complains about its flaws!
Spent some time looking at the PD videos on this bag and I just kept wondering "ok but what's wrong with it?" Thanks for criticizing it, and I'm glad you nitpick so I can consider what I can and can't live with. Might have to try those straps IRL before paying a lot of money. How many years have you had it? How heavily did you use it? How well did it re-sell? It still looks in good condition.
I love negative/low points or cons as it gives the deal breakers in a nutshell. Def honest by a guy who’s actually used it extensively. Dont like laptop in top its just not ergonomic for instance. Thanks!
If you're always on the move travelling, this is the best backpack. This bag made my 3 week Japan trip a breeze. No annoying luggage to pull around, stylish and small enough not to get mistaken for a mountaineer. Space for a camera, clothes for a week and some essentials.

So after using the bag for YEARS you finally decide to get rid of it because there are things that annoy you? -___- I’ll be honest, for the amount of travel bags I owe this is the best one. You’re entitled to your opinions but there is way too much nitpicking here. Saying you don’t like that the bag gives off a perception that it’s full? Or saying you have a hard time closing it when it’s full? Huh. Then saying you’re scared your laptop would break in the sleeve? Lmao how many laptops broke in the bag? 0. Not sure what’s the issue here. I’m gonna pass on this review.
I’ve taken the everyday backpack in week trips. Yea the straps aren’t the most comfortable, but they are durable as heck! The materials made from these are head over heals better than any Osprey (and I own 3 Ospreys - 1 of which I take on multi week trips to Europe). You’re review doesn’t scare me in the slightest. I’m purchasing this bag. The engineering and quality alone with PD spare no expense. Stop posting videos that oppose the normal perception of these bags just to get views lol. And stop not picking. You’ll never find a perfect bag.
Appreciate the review! I agree with you, but I ended up buying this bag anyway because I realized there's no bag that exists today that fits all of my nitpicking requests 😂After all my research it was between this and the Tortuga lite bag. I almost picked the Tortuga, but ended up going with the PD simply because it had more pockets, a couple of secret compartments, and the magnetic waist belt design is quite innovative. Some things that irritate me about the PD bag: - 2 water bottle holders, which probably got calculated into the liters (I don't even need one water bottle holder most of the time)! - The misalignment of the handles, and the "duffle" bag handle on the back is terrible, so I can't really use this as a duffle - of course the straps aren't too good - the compression idea is awesome, but the buttons keep unbuttoning even when there's practically nothing in the bag. I think they could have been a bit more creative than a button, maybe adding some sort of clamp so it doesn't keep de-compressing. I'd prefer to put this thing under the seat if I could. - zippers ... no idea why they didn't use YKK - The main compartment digs into the second compartment. I don't feel like this is an issue with a Tumi bag I have. Can't really explain why but they definitely conflate with each other a bit too much for my tastes. Everything else is pretty awesome and beats almost all the other bags out there. I mostly ended up buying it because I got it for ~$235. So ~$65 (20%) off had me sold and it was cheap enough that if I didn't want it after my next trip I can always swap it for a bit of a loss. Not the end of the world.

The strap wings fold in. For my use cases, it is perfect. I can't see how any of your nits are worth bailing on the backpack. You may need a dump purse instead.
A bit late but anyway. Good and informative video! I'm looking into this bag as a bigger photo and travel/camping backpack. I own the 20l everyday backpack and love it but it's a bit too small for travel or camping. I noticed one thing tho, when you talked and demonstrated about the sternum strap, you hooked the wrong end of the strap. The one without the little pulltab is the one you install semi-permanently, and the one with the tab is the one you attach and re-attach on an everyday basis. You took it of in the right end but the semi-permanent end doesn't look like it's properly attached. I have the same sternum strap for my everyday backpack 20l and i have never experienced the issue you're mentioning. But as said, overall a good and informative video! Cheers!
I agree with all the positives and negatives this bag has brought out of people. Personally, the bag would be the #1 all-time bag with a better shoulder strap and hip belt, but that's just me. The ability to tuck away the carry system is a concept that has been introduced previously. I had a pack back in the late 90s that did the same thing, and it did just as well with zippers vs magnets. AND it could be accomplished again with a better carry system. PD selling the 45L as a camera bag needs to be revised. The ability to put a camera cube in a backpack doesn’t make it a camera backpack. Yes, the camera cubes are excellent, and attaching them in PD packs is a fantastic option for lugging your equipment around. I invested in my PD camera cubes long before I purchased the Traveler 45L pack for that reason, and to this day use them in luggage and now in my F-Stop Shinn backpack. However, the one thing PD didn’t consider before they started pushing the Traveler 45L as a photographer backpack alternative was the convenience most, if not all, camera backpacks offer, and that is storage for accessories. Anyone looking to use this bag as a full-time camera pack must know that all zippered storage areas are in the front of the bag. Meaning if you are inside the bag pulling out camera equipment (from the back) and suddenly remember that that specific Arca plate you need or camera battery is in the zippered compartment up front, you have to close the clamshell, turn the bag around, unzip the front, and find the zippered pouch you stored it in. ALL UP FRONT. With all that said, the workflow for the bag as a camera bag is horrible. If you carry a camera body and maybe two small prime lenses, then you have plenty of room in the camera cube to store what-nots. But if you are using the bag to carry that, I question why you are hauling around the Traveler 45L in the first place.
BTW, with all that being said, I bet Traveler 45L 2.0 will solve some of the negatives many people have pointed out. Personally, I'm keeping my bag as a traveler's bag. It works great with a medium or small cube and some packing cubes. Keep the weight down and comfort should be acceptable.
Thank you for this review. I agree with your comments on the straps and the storage. I wouldn't use this backpack for hiking. I have the Nya-Evo Fjord 36C that is excellent for that, but I want something slimmer for carry-on on smaller aircraft. I will put the small camera cube in it and fold down the organizer panel in the front so that I can have front access to the contents of the bag. The Nya-Evo is very fabulous in that regard as it has rear-access for the camera only and top access to the rest of the bag. But it is super bulky, 8cm more in depth than the PD, so I will give that one a try as a second option :-)
1. Sounds like you’ve just been overpacking it. They’re not compression zippers. 2. Same with the laptop complaint. Don’t overpack the bag. Have clothes? Use their compression bags to keep the size down. And like you say, your laptop never got damaged. So it’s fine. 3. Yes, the strap thing is just nitpicking. Most bags don’t even allow you to stow the straps. Be glad there’s at least the option. 4. The thin straps thing is subjective I guess. They shoulder straps have always felt very comfortable to me. 5. Sternum strap. I’ve used peak design bags for the last 5 and a little bit years, and they’ve all used that same sternum strap system. I haven’t every lost it. Might be a manufacturing defect if yours falls off easily. 6. How do you know how Peak Design measures the internal volume of their bags? That’s not really based on anything, is it? Every bag is a tradeoff, and I’ve yet to see another bag that beats the Peak Design one. WANDRD gets close I think, but I still think it loses to the Peak Design. Keep in mind, these are CAMERA bags. At one point you compared it to some other bag where you said you could pack way more into it than the rating, but that's really not a fair comparison.
1: Respectfully, I don't feel like I "overpacked" this bag. 2: I use compression bags. I'm still disappointed with the "layout" of the bag. 3: Nitpicking is the name of the game on this channel! It's how we can IMPROVE products! :) 4: Glad you like them! It certainly is a preference thing. 5: It's possible! 6: I can guarantee you, most manufacturers, including PD, do not use any kind of scientific metrics for measuring their volume. That said if a representative of PD would like to weight in on how they do it, I'd love to be proven wrong. I appreciate you commenting and watching and it's great that you like and have had a good experience with this bag. A lot of people love them, but I think there are better options out there - at least for my uses and possibly other peoples.
I’ve had several travel backpacks. I also adhere to the idea of traveling with one carry on compliant bag. I only have a few things to say about your gripes. First, the laptop flap is not the only access to the main packing space. You can also access that space thru the front flap by zipping the organization panel. As far as the ‘sunglass pocket’ goes, why would you not use it to store something, i.e. wallet, keys, air pods, dongles then store your glasses in a place you feel is more secure? The storage spaces designed into a travel bag don’t have to be used for anything in particular. If it fits there the way you want it to then put it there otherwise find another space. So, after 6 years you’ve decided to use another bag. Which you’ll undoubtedly find issues with. I’m curious what your choice is?
@@ComputerStuff That’s a great bag. I’ve got a 32. When I don’t need organization it’s my ‘go to’. I get your point. I can’t use the same bag for every situation. I’m trying to have the ‘perfect’ bag depending on what I’m using it for. The Peak 45 definitely isn’t a do-it-all solution but I do use it 75% of the time. My biggest gripe ( yeah, I have one, ha) is the weight. I’m still searching for the perfect combo of durability, weight, comfort, organization, aesthetic. I am finding that 32-35 liters capacity, whatever that is, seems to fit 99% of my needs. I enjoyed your video 👍🏾 nuthin wrong with stirring the pot skittle, ha
I’ve never once thought my laptop or iPad was at risk in the laptop section, or have ever lost the sternum strap. And my bag has never been “floppy” when packing. Yes, the shoulder straps suck - though better than their Everyday Backpack IMHO.
I've owned 4 different peak design backpacks that all use the same sternum strap and I've never lost one. Tens of thousands of miles in travel, 0 lost sternum straps. Not sure if you're unlucky or i'm the opposite - but i've never had a problem.
@@ComputerStuff i almost finished your video, but i see that your strap is upside down. it might be the reason why you keep losing them? And you should only remove the side with the little flap attached to it.

Realize this is a little older, but an interesting point of view. I've had mine for a while and aside from your complaint about potentially losing the sternum strap, don't really agree with your assessment. I find the straps to be fine, and this holds a ton of stuff. However, people should realize it's really only 35 liters until you use the expansion zippers. Even then, is it really 45 liters? The expansion is a little hard to take full advantage of, but has been fine for me. I like the general layout, as it's similar to the Goruck GR2. Bag is somewhat compact, while something like the full-size Tortuga pack will likely hold more. However, these pack better, zippers are great (never had an issue), sides aren't floppy and backpack straps are more appropriate for what this is. Different entry points are nice when you're on the go. You do have to be careful with any pack that includes a laptop sleeve. Pack smartly, put your cords and chargers in the front of the pack so your soft clothes are against the laptop. I just got back from a 2-week trip to a warmer climate and had no issue fitting everything. Clothes for the trip, running clothes and such, sandals, laptop and associated work essentials, camera, binoculars, hats, etc. A lot of stuff and it packed just fine. Was full, but all good and fit into overhead bins just fine. If I primarily just packed clothes for hanging out, this would be super easy. But if you're more active and need gear, it can get tight. Throw in some diving / snorkeling equipment and you'll like need more capacity. Considering the Peak Travel Duffel Backpack for a checkable option, and for trips where I just need to bring more 'gear.' Good to get differing opinions. Cheers.
Thanks Chris, nice review! I have several travel and photo backpacks and still have not found the "One". I am looking at Peak Design at the moment. As I already have the EveryDay slings in 3l and 6l size, I know that Peak Design is on the small side for stuffing things. Currently I am looking at the Everyday 30l backpack and the 45l travel backpack. I will be combining with a trolley, so the 30l is maybe a better option. Greets from Berlin!
Hey Martin, I think its worth a shot - I didn't love this bag but a lot of people do. Are you a photographer? If so, this may be a good fit. If you're just using it for travel you may want to consider looking at a Mystery Ranch or something more apt to PACKING it in!

I’m also not fond of the clamshell style where the laptop can potentially slide out of that lid. I finally got TSA pre-check so now I shouldn’t have to open my bag up wide now. Fortunately, I only had to do that once.
I have had the 45L bag for years now. Is it a perfect bag? My answer is no, but this is very subjective. There is one issue I do agree with and that is the sternum strap. I’ve lost a number of them and while getting them replaced is easy, you must pay for them. Not so easy. However, this is the only thing in this video that has merit. The PD travel backpack is not meant to be an “outdoors” backpack. It is also not built to hold 50lbs of stuff. No airline will allow you to carry on a bag with 50lbs of stuff. If you want to carry 50lbs on your back, you need a much more structured pack that will balance the load. He is entitled to his opinion, of course. Most people who have the bag love it.
Have the PD backpack and a few other PD bags but don't have the travel bags yet. It's $90 off right now so trying to convince myself to get it.. Lol. Thanks for the review!
Bro, you sound so annoyed! (especially at 1.5x!). I say get rid of it and make your life better so you don't have to be annoyed by it. Design looks good for me and I like the rear open (clamshell) for photo gear, makes things very easy (I have a bunch of their other stuff). I think your wife will be happier when you get rid of the bag because you'll be happier! Happy travels!
Nice video. But Chris, I think the Travel Duffel 35L from Peak Design might beat the Patagonia-it is not a black hole, specially using the packing cubes.
I had one of their Travel Duffels (I think we did a review on it?). It's a solid bag and looks amazing - but I still think Patagonia is more functional. That said, to each their own! Thanks for commenting and watching!

You are not a bag person. You are a simple traveler. Get your wide mouth duffle bag and throw your stuff in it. This bag is meant for people that appreciate bag technology.
Dude, I loved the story about the hidden cocaine pocket and the escape of the Mexican Cartel :) Bigs thumbs up for me for me ....I dont need such a big bag and sometimes yes too much features can be overkill... For my next 1 or 2 week travels trip, i will try to travel with my new 25L ( venture safe X24...) but i am not sure it is a real 24L seems much smaller ...I also got a foldable backpack from Osprey for everyday commute. Also i am not a photographer so ... PS : will look into the Osprey 30l you mentionned since it seems to be able to pack so much.
I have this bag and two other PD bags. I don’t have many complaints about this bag but I have come to hate their bags. They are make the most clever bags but also very uncomfortable and often unpractical.
I bet you bought this with your money. So the review is really honest. All the videos when dudes got this for free to review is 100% amazement. 45L is to big for me, although I'm looking at new 30L (which is actually 27L), cause I got their cubes already. And I'm kinda skeptical. Also love the jokes. So subbed for more ;). I guess closing this back opening is the same issue with every photo related backpack. Got the same issue with my Manfrotto. Although PD backpacks with cubes seem to be better idea than these 100% photography backpacks.
What i don't like about this pack is the back padding (not existing almost) and very thin straps. Osprey 40 litter FairPoint new version is way better than this. They have the airflow system and better straps. Also i think you will definitely fit more in it. I agree that as far as design Peek is winning but everything else not.
Sorry, but I do not think I can agree with you on one major aspect. Clam shell opening is the best think which can happen to a travel backpack. This is certainly not a hiking backpack with a top opening. as regards to your observation about laptop compartment, the point was not clearly understood. Where would you like the laptop to be adjusted? If it is in the main section, i.e. touching your back, it may hurt your back and eat up the space of main section. The same basic design considerations are generally being followed by all companies with minor modifications.
Hopefully they make 50-55L as the 45L is a bit small. Literally said it’s a ‘Travel’ backpack. However, another concern about 50-55L is a matter of TSA friendly. Great review. Liked and subbed!
Could the Peak Design Travel Bag 45L hold a 17.3" ultrawide laptop (0.71 x 16.18 x 9.06 inches) + a 15.6" external monitor (standard 16:9 aspect ratio) + a 11" tablet? All three items together?
The straps don't look comfortable. The bag is to heavy. The bag is to expensive. If they update the bag make the straps more comfortable shave off half the weight and shave 35% off the price it might be worth buying. They can get rid of one of the side access panels. And sell a lefty and righty version.
Agree with most of what you're saying, haha. A lefty and righty version may stand to muddy their supply chain a bit, but removing a side access panel (or both) maybe isn't a bad idea. In looking back, I can't recall how many times if ever, I used them.
No, you're not crazy. After using certain travel bags or luggage, I find deal breakers and not as happy traveling with it. I am in that process now watching different reviews and did not care much for Peak, not my style.

To each his own, but I disagree with all these criticisms. First off, you don’t like the clamshell opening, but there’s another opening in the front you could use without barely touching the back. And when the bag is piled full of stuff, of course it’s going to be tougher to close. And even when it’s empty I’ve never had problems zipping it shut. As far as the laptop pouch goes, you claim to have anxiety about your computer getting damaged, even though it never did. I don’t think that’s a fair criticism of the bag just because you were worried about something getting damaged (and it never did). As far as the straps not being comfortable, anytime the bag is full the straps are going to put pressure on you, that’s what the hip straps are for. You have admitted that all your complaints are nitpicks, so imagine how bad another bag is going to be! Again, to each his own, but I think this bag is by far the best travel backpack on the market.
Thanks for weighing in. For what its worth, and I hate promoting GoRuck - but I replaced this with a GoRuck as my main travel bag and the GORuck is superior in just about every way.
In reality, there is no perfect bag overall. You can find faults to any bag period. There are however great bags and despite what the overly critical guy said on this video PD is a great bag. The end.

Yea after 17mins --- you just really need a larger backpack. Not trying to say this is a bad review, but it feels like most of the problems you mentioned came from the fact for your need this backpack gets stuffed too hard. (I mean sunglasses pouch never work with a stuffed bag unless it's hardshell, which cut into internal volume even when not used)
You can't open it from the front no, only the "rear main zip" and side zips. I suppose you could lay it on its back and open it that way but that'd be even worse!
@@ComputerStuff Yes. You can open it from the front. You have to open the the outside zipper at the front first. Then there's another zipper inside that opens to the main compartment. I'm not sure how your didn't notice that.
@@jexler5 The hidden zip? Yes true this does exist but it's not a quick or practical access for packing. But yes its there if you need access to an item that you know for sure is sitting at that item.
Thanks for your honesty opinion man. I was going to get one but something about it seemed not right. After seeing your video now I know why. Plus it's 5byeaes old?? I'll wair for an update. Incidentally I'm leaning g towards the Patagonia MLC Tres version. Only thing missing is the water bottle holders. Or the Peak Designs 45L (unzips to 65L) Tavel duffel. Looks more basic and also no water bottle holders. Have you tried this one?
I have tried PDs duffel and prefer Patagonia's Black Hole duffel - fave.co/3AaQvmy The lack of water bottle holder doesn't bother me, and in some ways I prefer beacuse my bottle always fell out of the dedicated pocket. PD's duffel is a fine bag and may be preferred by some, but I prefer Patagonia's simplicity and durability. The PD bag just has too many zipper and pockets and "things" you have to fuss with. Black Hole is WYSIWYG! Patagonia can be converted into a backpack as well, and you truly can stash your entire house in the thing. I think one could enjoy either or!
Complaining how the clamshell bag closes and opens like a clamshell…. Yikes. Better to be able to open and have my laptop off to the side while working in the bag
I have been using a Patagonia Blackhole for pack and go travel and have been pretty happy with it. Can't think of anything I'd change other than you can lose all your shit in it quite easily. Blackhole is aptly named! The GoRuck looks intense! May have to grab one for a test unit!
@@ComputerStuff nice! My first “one bag” was the North Face base camp duffle, big cavity but hard to keep track of stuff like you said. The Gorucks are intense but they’re built like tanks, rainproof, 1000D, YKK Zips and organized layout. I like it bc it looks like a normal backpack when packed out. Def has its own intense look but I see a lot of people around the world use tactical bags from old to young. It blends in well imo

And they I tend to throw my laptop in haphazardly, but you can also get nice sleeves to pop your laptops in as well. This is the first time I've seen a review actually critical of a bag after some real world use. In a landscape of youtubers that seem to use the bag once or twice over the course of two weeks and basically are making an ad for it, this is very refreshing.

I’ve been working almost every weekend in another city for the last 2 years, and 1,5 years with this bag. I do see where this review stems from, but I’m still very happy with my bag. Three reasons: #1 at the end of the day, every bag is a compromise. I have bags which are more comfortable and lighter, but they don’t protect my gear and are definitely not stovable. Get some lose some. In my use this really ticks all of the boxes, and is good compromise. #2 It does not like to be over packed. Once you accept this, it’s a lot more comfortable. #3 When you travel a lot, organization is everything. It just makes leaving the house a breeze. And with the small camera cube, my camera is always accessible.

I've had this bag for a few years and love all the features. I agree with the strap comfort annoyance that is mitigated with the waist strap. Love the security features (check the peak design video on that). I'm not using it as a camera or computer bag so my loads are lighter. Love the materials and features.
I can see why people would bail on this bag though. More soft padding on the shoulder straps would solve 90% of my issues.
Raw weight is on the heavy side; 4.5 lbs.
I admit I do like the materials of the bag. They feel good.
Your video review was a much-needed reality check, preventing me from falling into the same pitfalls I experienced with the Aer Travel Pack (33l). Having recently tried a 60l duffle-style backpack, I contemplated a return to a more organized and well designed, but bigger, travel bag like the Peak Design. However, your review served as a clear reminder for me of the efficiency of the duffle style with pack cubes, offering ample space and airline carry-on compliance. You have side and front access if you choose. Also, the packing cubes (camera and clothes) are game changers here.
Could not agree more... and why I got this bag, along with the 35L duffle. The ability to move the packing/camera cubes between them with total ease. I'm going to grab the 65L on sale as a checked bag for cloths (never camera gear). The clamshell abilities are also more for photographers... you set the bag down to access and not put the side down that goes against your back. I love my travel backpack.
The packing cubes help and are game changers in almost any bag! I maintain my gripes, though. I simply don't miss this bag!
I think PD assumes photographers are the ones buying their bags, haha.
I watched another video video, where they said, that this backpack packs surprisingly little compared to the liters declared in comparison to an Osprey. So I ordered both for comparison, this one here and an Osprey Transporter Carry-On 44 for direct comparison before making my decision and I couldn‘t disagree more.
This PeakDesign Travel Backpack 45 packs quite a bit more than the mentioned Osprey, I tried with the exact same things. Not sure, how everyone comes to the conclusion, that this backpack here is comparatively underwhelming in packing space, as from my impression it‘s the other way around?
They are probably unorganised or not good packers bluntly.

I'm considering on buying this PD 45L and even after this video I'm considering it still 😅 I think the annoyances you mentioned are things I can live with. Also I actually like the concept of the clamshell mechanism and I've had (cheapo) backbags with laptops against my back without any issue so I think my laptops going to be okay there.

Spent some time looking at the PD videos on this bag and I just kept wondering "ok but what's wrong with it?"

How many years have you had it? How heavily did you use it? How well did it re-sell? It still looks in good condition.
Had it a couple years. Used it pretty heavily (I travel frequently). Resold easily but for a 25% hit or so. It held up well.
I love negative/low points or cons as it gives the deal breakers in a nutshell. Def honest by a guy who’s actually used it extensively. Dont like laptop in top its just not ergonomic for instance. Thanks!

If you're always on the move travelling, this is the best backpack. This bag made my 3 week Japan trip a breeze. No annoying luggage to pull around, stylish and small enough not to get mistaken for a mountaineer. Space for a camera, clothes for a week and some essentials.

I’ve taken the everyday backpack in week trips. Yea the straps aren’t the most comfortable, but they are durable as heck! The materials made from these are head over heals better than any Osprey (and I own 3 Ospreys - 1 of which I take on multi week trips to Europe). You’re review doesn’t scare me in the slightest. I’m purchasing this bag. The engineering and quality alone with PD spare no expense. Stop posting videos that oppose the normal perception of these bags just to get views lol. And stop not picking. You’ll never find a perfect bag.

Appreciate the review! I agree with you, but I ended up buying this bag anyway because I realized there's no bag that exists today that fits all of my nitpicking requests 😂After all my research it was between this and the Tortuga lite bag. I almost picked the Tortuga, but ended up going with the PD simply because it had more pockets, a couple of secret compartments, and the magnetic waist belt design is quite innovative. Some things that irritate me about the PD bag:
- 2 water bottle holders, which probably got calculated into the liters (I don't even need one water bottle holder most of the time)!
- The misalignment of the handles, and the "duffle" bag handle on the back is terrible, so I can't really use this as a duffle
- of course the straps aren't too good
- the compression idea is awesome, but the buttons keep unbuttoning even when there's practically nothing in the bag. I think they could have been a bit more creative than a button, maybe adding some sort of clamp so it doesn't keep de-compressing. I'd prefer to put this thing under the seat if I could.
- zippers ... no idea why they didn't use YKK
- The main compartment digs into the second compartment. I don't feel like this is an issue with a Tumi bag I have. Can't really explain why but they definitely conflate with each other a bit too much for my tastes.
Everything else is pretty awesome and beats almost all the other bags out there. I mostly ended up buying it because I got it for ~$235. So ~$65 (20%) off had me sold and it was cheap enough that if I didn't want it after my next trip I can always swap it for a bit of a loss. Not the end of the world.

The strap wings fold in. For my use cases, it is perfect. I can't see how any of your nits are worth bailing on the backpack. You may need a dump purse instead.

A bit late but anyway. Good and informative video! I'm looking into this bag as a bigger photo and travel/camping backpack. I own the 20l everyday backpack and love it but it's a bit too small for travel or camping.
I noticed one thing tho, when you talked and demonstrated about the sternum strap, you hooked the wrong end of the strap. The one without the little pulltab is the one you install semi-permanently, and the one with the tab is the one you attach and re-attach on an everyday basis. You took it of in the right end but the semi-permanent end doesn't look like it's properly attached. I have the same sternum strap for my everyday backpack 20l and i have never experienced the issue you're mentioning.

I agree with all the positives and negatives this bag has brought out of people. Personally, the bag would be the #1 all-time bag with a better shoulder strap and hip belt, but that's just me. The ability to tuck away the carry system is a concept that has been introduced previously. I had a pack back in the late 90s that did the same thing, and it did just as well with zippers vs magnets. AND it could be accomplished again with a better carry system.
PD selling the 45L as a camera bag needs to be revised. The ability to put a camera cube in a backpack doesn’t make it a camera backpack. Yes, the camera cubes are excellent, and attaching them in PD packs is a fantastic option for lugging your equipment around. I invested in my PD camera cubes long before I purchased the Traveler 45L pack for that reason, and to this day use them in luggage and now in my F-Stop Shinn backpack.
However, the one thing PD didn’t consider before they started pushing the Traveler 45L as a photographer backpack alternative was the convenience most, if not all, camera backpacks offer, and that is storage for accessories. Anyone looking to use this bag as a full-time camera pack must know that all zippered storage areas are in the front of the bag. Meaning if you are inside the bag pulling out camera equipment (from the back) and suddenly remember that that specific Arca plate you need or camera battery is in the zippered compartment up front, you have to close the clamshell, turn the bag around, unzip the front, and find the zippered pouch you stored it in. ALL UP FRONT. With all that said, the workflow for the bag as a camera bag is horrible. If you carry a camera body and maybe two small prime lenses, then you have plenty of room in the camera cube to store what-nots. But if you are using the bag to carry that, I question why you are hauling around the Traveler 45L in the first place.
BTW, with all that being said, I bet Traveler 45L 2.0 will solve some of the negatives many people have pointed out. Personally, I'm keeping my bag as a traveler's bag. It works great with a medium or small cube and some packing cubes. Keep the weight down and comfort should be acceptable.

Thank you for this review. I agree with your comments on the straps and the storage. I wouldn't use this backpack for hiking. I have the Nya-Evo Fjord 36C that is excellent for that, but I want something slimmer for carry-on on smaller aircraft. I will put the small camera cube in it and fold down the organizer panel in the front so that I can have front access to the contents of the bag. The Nya-Evo is very fabulous in that regard as it has rear-access for the camera only and top access to the rest of the bag. But it is super bulky, 8cm more in depth than the PD, so I will give that one a try as a second option :-)

1. Sounds like you’ve just been overpacking it. They’re not compression zippers.
2. Same with the laptop complaint. Don’t overpack the bag. Have clothes? Use their compression bags to keep the size down. And like you say, your laptop never got damaged. So it’s fine.
3. Yes, the strap thing is just nitpicking. Most bags don’t even allow you to stow the straps. Be glad there’s at least the option.
4. The thin straps thing is subjective I guess. They shoulder straps have always felt very comfortable to me.
5. Sternum strap. I’ve used peak design bags for the last 5 and a little bit years, and they’ve all used that same sternum strap system. I haven’t every lost it. Might be a manufacturing defect if yours falls off easily.
6. How do you know how Peak Design measures the internal volume of their bags? That’s not really based on anything, is it?
Every bag is a tradeoff, and I’ve yet to see another bag that beats the Peak Design one. WANDRD gets close I think, but I still think it loses to the Peak Design. Keep in mind, these are CAMERA bags. At one point you compared it to some other bag where you said you could pack way more into it than the rating, but that's really not a fair comparison.
1: Respectfully, I don't feel like I "overpacked" this bag.
2: I use compression bags. I'm still disappointed with the "layout" of the bag.
3: Nitpicking is the name of the game on this channel! It's how we can IMPROVE products! :)
4: Glad you like them! It certainly is a preference thing.

6: I can guarantee you, most manufacturers, including PD, do not use any kind of scientific metrics for measuring their volume. That said if a representative of PD would like to weight in on how they do it, I'd love to be proven wrong.
I appreciate you commenting and watching and it's great that you like and have had a good experience with this bag. A lot of people love them, but I think there are better options out there - at least for my uses and possibly other peoples.

I’ve had several travel backpacks. I also adhere to the idea of traveling with one carry on compliant bag. I only have a few things to say about your gripes. First, the laptop flap is not the only access to the main packing space. You can also access that space thru the front flap by zipping the organization panel. As far as the ‘sunglass pocket’ goes, why would you not use it to store something, i.e. wallet, keys, air pods, dongles then store your glasses in a place you feel is more secure? The storage spaces designed into a travel bag don’t have to be used for anything in particular. If it fits there the way you want it to then put it there otherwise find another space. So, after 6 years you’ve decided to use another bag. Which you’ll undoubtedly find issues with. I’m curious what your choice is?
I've been using a Patagonia Blackhole for my 1 bag travel. For my needs it does everything I need it to do.
@@ComputerStuff That’s a great bag. I’ve got a 32. When I don’t need organization it’s my ‘go to’. I get your point. I can’t use the same bag for every situation. I’m trying to have the ‘perfect’ bag depending on what I’m using it for. The Peak 45 definitely isn’t a do-it-all solution but I do use it 75% of the time. My biggest gripe ( yeah, I have one, ha) is the weight. I’m still searching for the perfect combo of durability, weight, comfort, organization, aesthetic. I am finding that 32-35 liters capacity, whatever that is, seems to fit 99% of my needs. I enjoyed your video 👍🏾 nuthin wrong with stirring the pot skittle, ha

I’ve never once thought my laptop or iPad was at risk in the laptop section, or have ever lost the sternum strap. And my bag has never been “floppy” when packing.

I've owned 4 different peak design backpacks that all use the same sternum strap and I've never lost one. Tens of thousands of miles in travel, 0 lost sternum straps. Not sure if you're unlucky or i'm the opposite - but i've never had a problem.

Realize this is a little older, but an interesting point of view. I've had mine for a while and aside from your complaint about potentially losing the sternum strap, don't really agree with your assessment. I find the straps to be fine, and this holds a ton of stuff. However, people should realize it's really only 35 liters until you use the expansion zippers. Even then, is it really 45 liters? The expansion is a little hard to take full advantage of, but has been fine for me. I like the general layout, as it's similar to the Goruck GR2. Bag is somewhat compact, while something like the full-size Tortuga pack will likely hold more. However, these pack better, zippers are great (never had an issue), sides aren't floppy and backpack straps are more appropriate for what this is. Different entry points are nice when you're on the go.
You do have to be careful with any pack that includes a laptop sleeve. Pack smartly, put your cords and chargers in the front of the pack so your soft clothes are against the laptop. I just got back from a 2-week trip to a warmer climate and had no issue fitting everything. Clothes for the trip, running clothes and such, sandals, laptop and associated work essentials, camera, binoculars, hats, etc. A lot of stuff and it packed just fine. Was full, but all good and fit into overhead bins just fine.
If I primarily just packed clothes for hanging out, this would be super easy. But if you're more active and need gear, it can get tight. Throw in some diving / snorkeling equipment and you'll like need more capacity. Considering the Peak Travel Duffel Backpack for a checkable option, and for trips where I just need to bring more 'gear.' Good to get differing opinions. Cheers.

As I already have the EveryDay slings in 3l and 6l size, I know that Peak Design is on the small side for stuffing things. Currently I am looking at the Everyday 30l backpack and the 45l travel backpack. I will be combining with a trolley, so the 30l is maybe a better option. Greets from Berlin!
Hey Martin, I think its worth a shot - I didn't love this bag but a lot of people do. Are you a photographer? If so, this may be a good fit. If you're just using it for travel you may want to consider looking at a Mystery Ranch or something more apt to PACKING it in!

I’m also not fond of the clamshell style where the laptop can potentially slide out of that lid. I finally got TSA pre-check so now I shouldn’t have to open my bag up wide now. Fortunately, I only had to do that once.

What kind of bag are you looking for? A one bag travel type thing?
I have had the 45L bag for years now. Is it a perfect bag? My answer is no, but this is very subjective. There is one issue I do agree with and that is the sternum strap. I’ve lost a number of them and while getting them replaced is easy, you must pay for them. Not so easy.
However, this is the only thing in this video that has merit. The PD travel backpack is not meant to be an “outdoors” backpack. It is also not built to hold 50lbs of stuff. No airline will allow you to carry on a bag with 50lbs of stuff. If you want to carry 50lbs on your back, you need a much more structured pack that will balance the load.
He is entitled to his opinion, of course. Most people who have the bag love it.
This bag is designed for either photography travel, or one pack travel. One has to assume it will end up heavy - and it does.

Bro, you sound so annoyed! (especially at 1.5x!). I say get rid of it and make your life better so you don't have to be annoyed by it. Design looks good for me and I like the rear open (clamshell) for photo gear, makes things very easy (I have a bunch of their other stuff). I think your wife will be happier when you get rid of the bag because you'll be happier! Happy travels!

For my next 1 or 2 week travels trip, i will try to travel with my new 25L ( venture safe X24...) but i am not sure it is a real 24L seems much smaller ...I also got a foldable backpack from Osprey for everyday commute.

I bet you bought this with your money. So the review is really honest. All the videos when dudes got this for free to review is 100% amazement. 45L is to big for me, although I'm looking at new 30L (which is actually 27L), cause I got their cubes already. And I'm kinda skeptical.

I guess closing this back opening is the same issue with every photo related backpack. Got the same issue with my Manfrotto. Although PD backpacks with cubes seem to be better idea than these 100% photography backpacks.

What i don't like about this pack is the back padding (not existing almost) and very thin straps. Osprey 40 litter FairPoint new version is way better than this. They have the airflow system and better straps. Also i think you will definitely fit more in it. I agree that as far as design Peek is winning but everything else not.
Sorry, but I do not think I can agree with you on one major aspect. Clam shell opening is the best think which can happen to a travel backpack. This is certainly not a hiking backpack with a top opening. as regards to your observation about laptop compartment, the point was not clearly understood. Where would you like the laptop to be adjusted? If it is in the main section, i.e. touching your back, it may hurt your back and eat up the space of main section. The same basic design considerations are generally being followed by all companies with minor modifications.
Hopefully they make 50-55L as the 45L is a bit small. Literally said it’s a ‘Travel’ backpack.
However, another concern about 50-55L is a matter of TSA friendly.

I never had an issue using as carry on!
The straps don't look comfortable. The bag is to heavy.
The bag is to expensive.
If they update the bag make the straps more comfortable shave off half the weight and shave 35% off the price it might be worth buying. They can get rid of one of the side access panels. And sell a lefty and righty version.
Agree with most of what you're saying, haha. A lefty and righty version may stand to muddy their supply chain a bit, but removing a side access panel (or both) maybe isn't a bad idea. In looking back, I can't recall how many times if ever, I used them.

No, you're not crazy. After using certain travel bags or luggage, I find deal breakers and not as happy traveling with it. I am in that process now watching different reviews and did not care much for Peak, not my style.

To each his own, but I disagree with all these criticisms. First off, you don’t like the clamshell opening, but there’s another opening in the front you could use without barely touching the back. And when the bag is piled full of stuff, of course it’s going to be tougher to close. And even when it’s empty I’ve never had problems zipping it shut. As far as the laptop pouch goes, you claim to have anxiety about your computer getting damaged, even though it never did. I don’t think that’s a fair criticism of the bag just because you were worried about something getting damaged (and it never did). As far as the straps not being comfortable, anytime the bag is full the straps are going to put pressure on you, that’s what the hip straps are for. You have admitted that all your complaints are nitpicks, so imagine how bad another bag is going to be! Again, to each his own, but I think this bag is by far the best travel backpack on the market.
Thanks for weighing in. For what its worth, and I hate promoting GoRuck - but I replaced this with a GoRuck as my main travel bag and the GORuck is superior in just about every way.

In reality, there is no perfect bag overall. You can find faults to any bag period. There are however great bags and despite what the overly critical guy said on this video PD is a great bag. The end.

After watching first 7 mins of your review.... I only learned one thing: YOU NEED A BIGGER BAG.
Yea after 17mins --- you just really need a larger backpack. Not trying to say this is a bad review, but it feels like most of the problems you mentioned came from the fact for your need this backpack gets stuffed too hard. (I mean sunglasses pouch never work with a stuffed bag unless it's hardshell, which cut into internal volume even when not used)

You can't open it from the front no, only the "rear main zip" and side zips. I suppose you could lay it on its back and open it that way but that'd be even worse!
@@ComputerStuff Yes. You can open it from the front. You have to open the the outside zipper at the front first. Then there's another zipper inside that opens to the main compartment. I'm not sure how your didn't notice that.
@@jexler5 The hidden zip? Yes true this does exist but it's not a quick or practical access for packing. But yes its there if you need access to an item that you know for sure is sitting at that item.

Incidentally I'm leaning g towards the Patagonia MLC Tres version. Only thing missing is the water bottle holders.
Or the Peak Designs 45L (unzips to 65L) Tavel duffel. Looks more basic and also no water bottle holders. Have you tried this one?
I have tried PDs duffel and prefer Patagonia's Black Hole duffel - fave.co/3AaQvmy
The lack of water bottle holder doesn't bother me, and in some ways I prefer beacuse my bottle always fell out of the dedicated pocket. PD's duffel is a fine bag and may be preferred by some, but I prefer Patagonia's simplicity and durability. The PD bag just has too many zipper and pockets and "things" you have to fuss with. Black Hole is WYSIWYG!
Patagonia can be converted into a backpack as well, and you truly can stash your entire house in the thing. I think one could enjoy either or!

@@adv67 Yes. I use a 55L blackhole as carry on almost every time I fly now with 0 issues including on budget airlines like Southwest or Spirit.
I like the option for a clam opening, but a different way to get in it so I don't have to open the whole thing every time

There are a few factors including heat and being banged around, both things a bag is subject to, that can cause a magnet to weaken.

I have been using a Patagonia Blackhole for pack and go travel and have been pretty happy with it. Can't think of anything I'd change other than you can lose all your shit in it quite easily. Blackhole is aptly named!
The GoRuck looks intense! May have to grab one for a test unit!

The Gorucks are intense but they’re built like tanks, rainproof, 1000D, YKK Zips and organized layout. I like it bc it looks like a normal backpack when packed out. Def has its own intense look but I see a lot of people around the world use tactical bags from old to young. It blends in well imo

And they I tend to throw my laptop in haphazardly, but you can also get nice sleeves to pop your laptops in as well.
