Great video!!! I have been looking at getting a travel bag for my planned trips after COVID and for my wedding shoots. These were the two I have been bouncing back and forth between these two so it was nice to see a review between them. I have the PD 30L everyday and love it so I was a little partial to the PD Travel bag lol.
Absolutely superb videos, kudos to your efforts many times people get hyped by brands & forgets to check basics, you index will help them select proper bag for camera. I wonder is there any 13" or 15" taller version of Peak Design Travel backpack, so i can use it somehow on my motorcycle tank as tank bag for camera.
Great comparison video! I have the Peak Design backpack, it's a great bag although I would want a bit more padding on the back which would make it more comfortable if there was a laptop inside
Nomadic + Polar Pro create great gear. Bags, ND filters. But, why should people walk around with Peter Mckinnon branding on it like fanboys? Not so professional. This name branding should actually be discounted, rather than cost more.
Oh Jeeze. That’s so tough. The power of the PRVKE is the ability to make it smaller or bigger depending on what you need at the time. But the peak has the advantage of some awesome functions and more space overall. I was originally going to include my PRVKE 31L in this comparison but thought it would make the video too long haha. I’d say that as a mostly daily bag with some travel stuff the prvke is probably a better go to. If you travel pretty regularly and want a great all in one bag though, the peak is pretty awesome! Tough call though, I’d have to go through the whole process again for that comparison
I can't find any channel that's not bias when it comes to Peter mcannan either there all his friends or the paid to say nice things about the bag.. very frustrating..it's great to see this video is not like that..
Yeah... not that I've been using backpacks a lot lately since I'm stuck at home but my wandrd is looking kinda sad lately cause the PD is even a pretty awesome daily carry.
I’ve always been amazed by the amount of polish that Peak puts into their products. Little innovation like the folding dividers and the zippers that “just work well” keeps me coming back over and over. Amazing comparison Dunna! Thanks for a well thought out video with great talking points.
Totally! The everyday backpack v1 wasn't for me... I have the messenger bag but it honestly doesn't get used much anymore. But when I saw this I knew it would be a competitor for the PM bag (which I already had when I got the Peak). One thing I didn't mention that I appreciate is Peak Design's recycled materials and carbon neutrality (pretty sure they are anyway).
The McKinnon branding garbage is a huge turn off, not because I don't like Peter ( I actually love his content ), but I won't support the "jordan"ifying sponsorship nonsense of something as basic as camera bags. No thanks nomatic.
I get it now to your opinion but the branding is settle what’s in this world doesn’t have branding clothes shoes phones computers functionality I get it peak would be the obvious choice and I’ve been thru 10 bags trying to find the right one but my issue was that they all looked like camera bags with the same grey lining etc then Peter bag came along haven’t switched since fits all my gear and more and haves a look that doesn’t scream camera bag or at least camera bag with style. So Peter for me and the skull logo
I'm still swearing by that lowenpro 400. Did a whole tour in that one bag without dropping a whole 401k on. Also PRO TIP bought some military like... molle bags and just kitted out way more storage on it too. dope vid borttttherrrr.

@@ryanweeks287 I have that one, too. It's not bad but there's a few things I'd change. Like no expandable pocket on one side, and it rides a little high on my torso for some reason.
Hey Dunna, did you get a chance to test how weather resistant they are? I'm based in Scotland so there's a high probability of heavy rainfall year round, I tend to take my jacket off to protect my not so waterproof bag but I end up getting absolutely soaked in the process so i'd be easily sold on either of these backpacks if they were waterproof machines!
Just get a 40L rain cover. It has elastics that go around your bag and keeps it 100% rain proof. Access to the bag is limited because there is a cover ontop but with the elastic around the edge of the cover. Its easy to remove and put back on in seconds! No need to worry about any bag in the rain
I have the Nomatic McKinnon bag and as far as comfort it’s probably the most comfortable bag I’ve ever had. I took a street photography trip to nyc and spent the entire day with this bag on my back. I walked from Times Square to the 911 memorial abs across the Brooklyn bridge where my car was parked. That’s a lot of waking. I carried my camera in my hand obviously, street photography, but I did have lenses in the bag and also my “water” bottled was kept full the entire time and in its pocket on the bag. Also had a jacket in the bag. When I got to the car my legs were killing me, but my shoulders were surprisingly great. Love this bag. I would still get it over the Peak even though I love peak design stuff. Both awesome bags, can’t go wrong either way.
Nice comments, David. I recently acquired the Nomatic 35L Camera Pack and so far, it does not disaapoint. The entire bag seems well-made, and the straps are also quite comfortable, even without using the chest strap or waist strap. Very impressed with the myriad of pockets, and the expandable front compartment is a bonus too. It's the only bag I've used thus far that can easily acommodate a long 180-600 telephoto zoom.
I agree with everything you say in this video, I've got the Peak Design with the medium cube as well. I especially like the zips, it's so nice to have no issues in opening the bag. Such a basic thing but you don't realize how much difference it makes until you put it to use. I use it as my main bag now and would recommend it to everyone.
Great video! I bought the Nomatic last year and returned it within 3 days. Even with all that space I still felt very restricted when trying to organize my gear. Also, as you mentioned, its too stiff and not at all comfortable (in my opinion). I ended up getting the Peak Design a few weeks later and have zero regrets in my decision. I have a few PD products, they are easily the most innovative brand out there.
How do you feel about the strap comfort and the weight of the bag itself. Some folks on Reddit were saying that the straps were not very comfortable and the bag itself is quite heavy.
My favorite thing so far is the fact that they actually look field tested bravo! something satisfying about them being reviewed and not looking like you just unboxed them enjoying this so far!
Oh yeah... I've actually been using both of these for a while now. I've had the PM longer so it's got a bit more wear but it's holding up like a champ. I tried to clean it up a bit better for b-roll haha.
@LUITE I think maybe you misunderstood. What @JaimeGFX means is that it’s obvious that I’ve actually used the bags and tested them out properly before I gave my opinions and did this review... thus making the review more valuable to them.

But you are correct i personally appreciated the review 100x more because it looks like you genuinely reviewed them first hand.
another point ................................. teke the rain coat for peak design for this bag ...........and go to mountains or streets of Malta everywhere is dirt rain or not rain ............ or snow in the Swiss alps. you can easily go down with peak design bag you have to access to cameras from back anyway............ so only get dirt the rain coat not bag! and your bag waterproof anyway plus rain coat ........nothing happened there so wenn you back your car or train take the rain coat your clean peak design camera bag is there !
Got my Peak Design in October last year and it's been great so far. Having dual water bottle pockets is fantastic, and they fit my Manfrotto tripod, though it kinda makes me wish I had Peak's Travel Tripod (but sheesh $600 is a lot for it). I do admit that aesthetically I pretty much prefer Pete's bag, BUT, that is only because I look like a Ninja Turtle with Peak Design's bag on my back. Not even kidding, I transform into Donatello with it on.
That was a huge dilemma for me which of these two bad boys to buy more than a year ago. Even though I have a lto of accesories from PD I decided to go with PM x Nomatic. Sure it's big and hefty, changing the customization inside takes me about two hours everytime, because all these velcrows are just catching everywhere. And hiking with it it's nightmare for my shoulders. But what sold me over was the little inception transformer cube/backpack, that was just so genius. And it aligns with how I think traveling should be: You get to your base camp and then mostly you don't need all your stuff for some smaller trips, just some, and for that purpose the Cubepack it's so efficient... Then I bought a big telephoto lens which I can technically fit inside but my camera body and second lens has to be in the compartment area and that's not ideal especially if you have your bottle inside as well. Basically now I've got too much stuff for the Cubepack but too little for the actual big bag. And I'm quite sure that I'm not using it properly bcs hiking? Probably better options out there. But as a travel bag or for medium to longer trips I can see myself loving this.
Thanks for sharing Marek. I totally feel you on that “too much, too little” thing. It’s darn near impossible to find a bag that fits for everything. The PM bag plus the smaller bag is a great idea or tossing a wandrd veer packable bag into any bigger bag but then you run into the issue that you have 🤦🏻♂️ Maybe some day we’ll have the answer

Osprey Farview has entered the chat :) I have the Nomatic for when my purpose is photography and I am heavy on gear. If I need a travel backpack that I can use with a cube while also loading up with items, I would probably take Nomatic cube bag with Osprey Farview 40 bag. Back support is unmatched. Photo/travel hybrid bag vs Travel/adventure hybrid bag, the adventure bag will win on comfort and ability to walk with load. I think PD is a cool bag too, I just happened to find Nomatic first.
A few things I think you missed with this review On the Peter bag those adjustment straps at the top of the shoulder straps are called load shifting adjusters... when you have the waist strap done up you can transfer the weight of the bag to your waist and off your shoulders by loosening them this also gives massive airflow behind your back. the Peter bag also has a frame/ chassis built into it the peak design does not have this Also iv ask a few peoples about the Peter bag and they’ve said it took some time for the straps to wear in before they become comfortable. Other people have commented that the peak design bag straps dig in when fully loaded because of the thinness of them So how long did you use each bag before this review???????? I love peak design but those straps + no chassis or load shifter is a massive fail on their behalf also bad air ventilation on the back is also an oversight some pretty big oversights for a very innovative company to make on a bag made for carrying heavy camera gear I’ll have to wait for both companies to release a v2 of these before I lay my money down
Thanks for your input! I did mention the load shifting straps but that’s interesting to know the specific way they were intended. Also, I timhing that the frame/ chassis might actually be the reason I found the PM bag less comfortable. Like I mentioned, it felt stiff whereas the peak could mold to a more comfortable shape. I haven’t had the “cutting in” problem with the peak design one and I’ve definitely loaded it right up with gear. And I thought the same about the PM straps but I wore it quite a bit and they haven’t really changed much. I’ve owned the PM bag for about 7 months and the PD for about 3. If I had to guess, I’d say they’ve both gotten pretty equal use. I put the PM through one really big hike and a trip and I’ve been wearing the PD bag for several hikes and a lot of daily stuff (since I can’t travel right now I tried to kind of simulate that scenario instead). Neither bag is absolutely perfect, but I am quite happy with both. And I’m definitely excited to see what either of them will do with the next version.
Best review on UA-cam for both these bags. I wish I would have come across this one way sooner. Peak design all the way. But not hating on Peter’s either.
They are both exceptional quality backpacks, but I'll never understand how a bag can cost 370+$. They're overpriced af. It's a bag. Yes materials are great and expensive, it protects your expensive gear, but it's just A BAG. It's a big no for me
Absolutely awesome video man!! I am a fan of Peak Design for various products but damn this comparison is crazy good!! I know their Travel backpack is awesome, this made it even more apparent how good it is!
On the PD zippers you missed the fact that some of the pulls have a button that lets you tie them into some of the loops to help them stay shut. They can still open enough that you might lose some change or even keys maybe but it helps keep them in place. Especially if you don't open the side access from the bottom.
I got both of them.. I ended up using the Peak Design one for personnal travel and the PM one for work. Because on the PM one I can put way more stuff as camera equipement than with the PD. I got all size of camera cubes and even the large one can't get enought stuff in it. Also in the PM bag I can put my DJI RS2 in the front pocket where i put some comfy stuffs inside the big internal pocket to protect him and all my other stuff inside the main compartment. Like that I can just go with everything i need with just one bag.
Got into this a bit skeptical - expecting you to rave about the PM bag like half the YT gang... (regardless of being better/worse) But got very excited to see a full and fair review for both of these bags! Was considering them both, they both look amazing! Great job breaking down all the details and considerations! Really appreciate it! After getting some PD stuff lately (clips, straps, tripods) - their attention to details is absolutely stunning! I see the bag is no different.
LOL, Peter's gonna be mad at you. Just kidding, that was a great comparison. I have Peter's Bag with all the accessories and I love it. I have zero regrets with the purchase. The PD does look brilliant though. Thanks for the awesome comparison!
@@dunnadidit Handles: you said you liked the peak design because they made the handles you use the most, more comfortable(the top handle). While the Nomatic has the nicer top handle, and another handle used for hanging, I don’t see why you gave that to the Peak Design. Access/Camera Compartment: You talk in depth about the different camera cube options for the Peak Design but don’t show any of the accessories offered with the Nomatic. In my opinion the camera cube on the Nomatic which turns into another backpack is a huge selling point. As for your “sideways camera trick”, it pretty much defeats the purpose of having side access as well as putting the side of your camera pointed directly into your back...I personally do not like that. Dividers: You wished that the Nomatic bag came with more and the PD came with extras, but didn’t you buy the medium camera cube separate from the backpack? So in reality the PD comes with no dividers. Also the dividers are just so much more premium on the Nomatic, you can feel the cheap flimsy nature of the PD in comparison. Comfort: Very subjective category in which I don’t think you go in depth enough. If you thought the materials were better on the Nomatic but then criticized them for being stiff...I don’t really understand your reasoning. The better materials will last longer and will break in. I can appreciate the PD being more comfortable for you, but i think this is a throwaway category. I enjoy both bags, but for me the Nomatic is far superior in my opinion and the way you compared them to me feels like you are slightly biased towards PD products.
I appreciate your points. Some of it is definitely subjective (which I definitely tried to make apparent in the video) but let me clarify a few things just in case anyone else is reading this as well Handles - PM has the comfier top handle. But the rest of them are too tight to the bag for me to use... like I actually don't use them. And they're not very comfortable the couple of times I tried. PD has a reasonably comfy top handle, comfortable back handle (which is a great addition and the second most used one on the bag) that the PM doesn't have. And the side and bottom handles I said are less comfortable than the top handle but still totally useable with the amount of clearance. So for my use (maybe I have big hands) the PM has 1 usable handle and the PD has 5. That's why the PD won that category for me. Access/Camera Compartment - The reason i had to include a camera cube was to put them at more of an even starting point. Without any camera cube, the PD isn't really a camera bag and thus doesn't really make sense for me to talk about on my channel as a camera channel. I love some of the nomatic extras and agree that the camera cube/backpack is a great add on but they're an extra cost as well and just make the comparison even more complicated since PD also offers extras and accessories as well. So if I talk about the PM cam cube, I should talk about the PD tech pouch and then do I also compare both companies compression packing cubes too? It just gets all too messy. The PM base model vs. the PD with a camera cube seemed like a great and reasonably equal starting place. As for side access. Thats one of the reasons I like the PD side access more than the PM one. Because I don't use side access to get to my camera, but I do use it to get to other stuff that lives above the camera cube (which I talked about a little). With the PD I can do that from either side, with the PM I cant. And I cant feel any difference whether the side of the camera is pointed towards my back because of the extra depth in the PD. (I also don't really notice it when I've tried it with the PM but it causes other issues) Dividers - I think we just disagree on this one, I don't find the PD ones to be lower quality at all. And I already talked about the cube situation and why I included that. Comfort - yeah this was a tough category to do at all because it's going to be very different. When I talked about materials, I was talking more about the apparent quality of them but left comfort out of it since that got it's own category. Nomatic seems like it might hold up better over time but thats just based on assumptions and personal experience testing both these bags. And as for the comfort... I literally just used both bags and explained which one was more comfortable for me. Cant say much beyond that and it wouldn't be fair to say "the PD was more comfy but I'm going to give this to the PM because I think in 3 years it will be the more comfortable one" lol. Hopefully that clarifies a bit for you or for anyone else reading who was confused about some of these points. As far as the bias... I think I did a pretty good job at laying things out equally and explaining my position but sure... I knew after my experience with both bags which one I preferred... when I made up the list of categories and such, I didn't think it would go as far one way as it did. But I never claimed that this was completely unbiased (that doesn't exist... unbiased reviews are a myth... that would just be reading a spec sheet and even then its probably biased in some way lol) Cheers!
@@RaiseTheRufus1992 this was about as unbias of a review as it would get, Dunna just spoke straight facts unlike all the other ytbers that reviewed the bag cuz they got one free from Pete. The only other youtubers that did spoke the truth was Becki and Chris. Ever since pm came out with his bag, I already knew the PD would crush it. The problem with PM's bag is the fact that it's not modular. Try bringing it on a week long vacation and you'll instantly realize you'll need another carry on to keep everything else other than camera gear. And if that was the argument, that PM's is just a camera bag, then I'd just go with the Lowepro protatic 450 aw and a carry on. Whereas the pd travel line can store all your camera gear and your essentials for one bag travel. I dove deep into the PD travel line and you'll know why it's the perfect bag after watching it. Talking about dividers, if u were to throw in all the accessories both bags have to offer, PD has PM beat as well with the tech pouch and the small camera cube. Yes PM's has a cube that turns into a backpack, but that's only useful when your not carrying the actual backpack itself. Whereas on the PD, you can carry the backpack and attach a camera strap on to the small camera cube as a sling or personal item when you're bringing it on a plane. All those separate pouches for filters and memory cards are more reasons you'll forget something behind when your on location. Pd tech pouch is an all in one solution that keeps everything together and I've turned that into a power station as well. Side access is the #1 thing I look for in all my bags, it's the most handy thing when you've got a drone that you can launch without even having to take your bag off. You can use it for cameras too but that's where PD also wins. Not that it's part of the camera bag but pd has the camera clip where my camera usually sits when I'm out vlogging for even quicker access, making the side access available for the drone. As for comfort, I've been traveling with just the pd bag around the world, one bag carry for 2 weeks at a time. Vlogging with cameras, lights, tripod, gopros and drones along with all my essentials and it wasn't uncomfortable at all. Looking at the straps on PM's bag, they'd probably do great as well. But again, I wouldn't be able to fit more than 3 days worth of clothes with PM's bag.

I own the Peter McKinnon backpack and have now resigned it to a luggage/clothing bag when I travel and use my Lowepro 450 AW as my main everyday camera bag or I use my Neewer 2 in 1 Roller Camera Backpack. I found certain advantages (very few) with the Peter McKinnon backpack... (1) the accessories....The extra accessories like the backpack with the camera compartment in the bottom for day trips is great to some degree, BUT the one issue I found with it along with the main camera backpack.... NEITHER fits my Nikon Z6 or Z7 properly!!! I had a hell of a time fitting my Nikon Z series cameras in them and I got the impression that Peter had them designed with those who use Canon and Sony Mirrorless cameras and negelected us Nikon users. (2) I LOVE the battery and memory card holders!! They are fantastic and have became a part of my everyday carry kit when out shooting along with the lens filter holder. But the one HUGE disadvantage is THEY COST EXTRA!!! With the accessories including the camera cube/backpack, accessory case, etc... it brought my purchase to over $1100.00 Next I really like Peak Design and their bags along with my Lowepro backpack as on the straps I can attach the Peak Design Camera Clip!!! On the Peter McKinnon bag, it was neglected for those of us who own them and the straps are just way too large and bulky to attach the camera clip. I literally had to cut the threads on one of the really thin exterior fabric straps on the outside of the main straps to attach my camera clip and even then it kept sliding up and down. Next disadvantage of the Peter McKinnon backpack was that side entrance kept getting caught on the Velcro from the separators on the inside. I had a hell of a time getting side access to my gear and my camera with it. Next thing I didn't like is Nomatic's return policy....wanted to return the bag after a few days of owning it and they expect the bag etc... to still have ALL the tags etc.... attached and all original packaging.... I had cut them off and disposed of the packaging so I was unable to return it. So I have resigned it to being a bag I use for carrying lighting gear like my Neewer LED/RGB light panels and Neewer studio strobes when doing shoots, plus I use it for JUST clothing when I travel. But I have to agree....Peak Design for the win!! I now regret not looking at their travel backpack and camera cube etc... But overall I love both my Neewer 2 in 1 roller backpack and Lowepro 450 AW. But in the end as far as your review goes....If I could go back and reconsider my purchase....I would pick the Peak Design over the Nomatic/Peter McKinnon bag.
Excellent video it speak truth. You cover all the point that some users have notice and more I definitely belive that Peter bag was going to be the winner but as you mention the small details that Peak Design have are those that help and make you like the bag more and more, esthetically Peter nag is stunning but it also comes to usability on that category. Great job on the review it has all cover and more. Now lets see if they come with a second version of both bags and how they perform, because there was a little teaser from Peter side and we have to wait to see it.

It’s a solid bag for sure but I just tried to be thorough and honest 🤷🏻♂️ Pete’s a solid guy and I’m sure if he watches the video he’ll understand the points I made (and hopefully put them into v2 haha)
Great review video. As a big PD owner and an owner of the 45L, Im a huge fan of it. For me, point system went as follows PD:15, Tier 1, Nomatic 1. Overall, solid review man - love it.
Cracking review!!!. Just like a girl's handbag.....I think these camera bags are very much a personal preference. I wish I could afford either - I actually can just my wife will yell at me for spending more money on camera gear. I think you were a little unfair on the @PeterMcKinnon bag - but you are judging these bags for your own use - again, I wish I had one of these. From a security perspective, I like the smaller side access and the interior of the McKinnon bag. I guess any1 could make either work for them. Love the highly thought-out design of both. Again, Great review!!
Awesome review man! TBH I love my Nomatic bag but the wheight is just too much! The waist strap was definitely a must while hiking through Austria last year 😜
You should do a new video comparing the V2s for both of these… I believe both companies have released newer versions that have adjusted alot of those critiques !
Both companies released similar smaller versions. But they are actually both quite different bags. I have the PM everyday bag. But the PD smaller one actually doesn’t fit any of their camera cubes to my knowledge so I didn’t think it made sense on my channel. But hopefully I can do something about the PM one soon!

I used Peter’s backpack for a few years, since the preorder stage, but the handles on the main zippers broke because it was too hard to open the main compartment and I can barely you use it at this point. So, a year ago I got the Peak Design everyday backpack 20l, but now I find it a little too small for big shootings and I just ordered the Peak Design travel backpack 45l shown in this video and I can’t wait to use it! 😁
Both bags are nice, wished I’d seen this comparison video a few months ago, as I was really on the fence w/ PD after the Everyday 30L just didn’t cut it for my system gear and It should. In my opinion after years of all their great stuff, this was the low point of all their products.. That said, I went with the Travel backpack for all the awesome features so well thought thru! I haven’t ever regretted it and it does literally everything I wanted and more, and more into the $$$-hole of accessories, all awesome...! That modularity for future growth and changes in MY setup is what PD is all about and nobody comes close to their future-thinking design with the user in mind. You are right, the PD is the superior pack, and I’m a tough customer with multiple and often excessive needs for my work. Ohhh, and one last thing, the “POOP”-colored interior of the McKinnon bag is a deal breaker even if it were the better bag, which it isn’t...

PD 45L all day.. You can take out the camera cube and use the bag as a regular bag when you get to your destination. You can also put a sling in the PD 45L. PD also has one of the best customer service. Only con with the PD are the straps.. they will rip thru your shoulders... wish they made a thicker strap.. Nomatic isn't the best with customer service. Had two of their bags with a failed zipper and they didn't honor the warranty. Stopped buying Nomatic after that. Plus, not everyone likes McKinnon...
We got 2x PD 45L and bought multiple cubes. We just load up the cube that contains the gear for the job. We have a video cube, a photography cube, a live stream cube, lens only cube, even a support cube (for all the effects, lens filters, tools etc) We can mix and match and load it to the PD 45L bag. Plus storage and organization is easy cause the gear are already in the cubes. For the Nomatic PM bag, you got to take all your stuff out and load it every time you need a certain config.
Never thought i would say this, but my favorite travel and backpack for photography is actually not a backpack at all but works fantastic as one. The Peak Design Travel Dufflepack 65. You should really try it. After over a decade traveling and shooting we just clicked and are now best buds :)
Side loading laptop pockets are a double-edged sword. Convenient, but if you forget to zip up the side and then sling the bag over your shoulder your laptop will go flying out. Ask me how I know. Also easier for a thief to grab your computer from outside.
Yeah, I had to go with a tie on that category because they're both great in their own regard. It was one of the reasons I wanted to separate that category from the dividers too.
Peak Design is dope but I have to buy a camera cube to carpartmentalize the bag? Thats BS in terms of cost and material. Thats not environmentally sound or cost conscience to the customer. I'm actually pissed I brought it and sticking with the 30L until I figure my next move

I received my Peak Design Backpack today ordered from there amazon site... Wrong item sent green instead of black and in a dirty used condition. the packaging looked like Edward had wrapped it? I will be returning both the backpack and med tote for ? Perhaps peter as it is the only thing out there??? Update: the shoulder straps suck!!!
Some of these comparisons seemed like they were going to be a point for Nomatic but then all of a sudden were for Peak lol. I used the Peak Design bag for a long while and have recently tried out the Nomatic one. Nomatic one just feels more like a sturdy protection bag with simply less stuff. This sounds like a down side but in the PD bag, for all of the additional pockets and such...I didn't find myself using them. I guess it's good that they're there but the Nomatic bag has everything I need and more robust/premium materials. Not sure the cost is worth it so I may end up returning it but I rate these a lot closer than this. The other thing not mentioned about the Peak that is relevant to me at least, is that to get a fully customizable bag for a variety of gear and other items, you need at least a couple of the different cubes. Which if you need to buy any two of them you're then at a higher price point than the Mckinnon bag which just has the dividers that you can make do whatever you need. I have the medium cube for PD and found that I would love to get the small and/or large but then it's extra money into a system. Which I guess if you're all in on PD stuff then it isn't an issue.
@Dunna Did It I own none of these, but a Lowepro Whistler Backpack 450 AW II, because I'm also the kind of person who always takes way too much gear with me. I was about to get the Peak Design when looking for bags, but the Lowepro just came out cheaper. I followed the Peter McKinnon kickstarter, but ended up not pledging because altough it looks great, I found it too pricey for what it actually offers. But the Peak Design is still high on my list. If they come up with a V2 that makes it even a bit better (like full flapping front and back like the Peter McKinnon one) then I'd probably get one.
@@dunnadidit True, he did use the Protactic and the Whistler too I think. They're good, rugged bags. And the Whistler, when filled with 2 bodies, 5 lenses, a drone and controller, spare batteries, filters, tripod, etc... It is still comfortable. The straps are great and the waist strap is soooo good and comfy.

These were the two I have been bouncing back and forth between these two so it was nice to see a review between them. Oh Jeeze. That’s so tough. The power of the PRVKE is the ability to make it smaller or bigger depending on what you need at the time. But the peak has the advantage of some awesome functions and more space overall. I was originally going to include my PRVKE 31L in this comparison but thought it would make the video too long haha. I’d say that as a mostly daily bag with some travel stuff the prvke is probably a better go to. If you travel pretty regularly and want a great all in one bag though, the peak is pretty awesome! Tough call though, I’d have to go through the whole process again for that comparison

Totally! The everyday backpack v1 wasn't for me... I have the messenger bag but it honestly doesn't get used much anymore. But when I saw this I knew it would be a competitor for the PM bag (which I already had when I got the Peak). One thing I didn't mention that I appreciate is Peak Design's recycled materials and carbon neutrality (pretty sure they are anyway).

Hey Dunna, did you get a chance to test how weather resistant they are? I'm based in Scotland so there's a high probability of heavy rainfall year round, I tend to take my jacket off to protect my not so waterproof bag but I end up getting absolutely soaked in the process so i'd be easily sold on either of these backpacks if they were waterproof machines!
Just get a 40L rain cover. It has elastics that go around your bag and keeps it 100% rain proof. Access to the bag is limited because there is a cover ontop but with the elastic around the edge of the cover. Its easy to remove and put back on in seconds! No need to worry about any bag in the rain
I have the Nomatic McKinnon bag and as far as comfort it’s probably the most comfortable bag I’ve ever had. I took a street photography trip to nyc and spent the entire day with this bag on my back. I walked from Times Square to the 911 memorial abs across the Brooklyn bridge where my car was parked. That’s a lot of waking. I carried my camera in my hand obviously, street photography, but I did have lenses in the bag and also my “water” bottled was kept full the entire time and in its pocket on the bag. Also had a jacket in the bag. When I got to the car my legs were killing me, but my shoulders were surprisingly great. Love this bag. I would still get it over the Peak even though I love peak design stuff. Both awesome bags, can’t go wrong either way.
Nice comments, David. I recently acquired the Nomatic 35L Camera Pack and so far, it does not disaapoint. The entire bag seems well-made, and the straps are also quite comfortable, even without using the chest strap or waist strap. Very impressed with the myriad of pockets, and the expandable front compartment is a bonus too. It's the only bag I've used thus far that can easily acommodate a long 180-600 telephoto zoom.
I agree with everything you say in this video, I've got the Peak Design with the medium cube as well. I especially like the zips, it's so nice to have no issues in opening the bag. Such a basic thing but you don't realize how much difference it makes until you put it to use. I use it as my main bag now and would recommend it to everyone.

Great video! I bought the Nomatic last year and returned it within 3 days. Even with all that space I still felt very restricted when trying to organize my gear. Also, as you mentioned, its too stiff and not at all comfortable (in my opinion). I ended up getting the Peak Design a few weeks later and have zero regrets in my decision. I have a few PD products, they are easily the most innovative brand out there.
How do you feel about the strap comfort and the weight of the bag itself. Some folks on Reddit were saying that the straps were not very comfortable and the bag itself is quite heavy.
My favorite thing so far is the fact that they actually look field tested bravo! something satisfying about them being reviewed and not looking like you just unboxed them enjoying this so far!
Oh yeah... I've actually been using both of these for a while now. I've had the PM longer so it's got a bit more wear but it's holding up like a champ. I tried to clean it up a bit better for b-roll haha.

Got my Peak Design in October last year and it's been great so far. Having dual water bottle pockets is fantastic, and they fit my Manfrotto tripod, though it kinda makes me wish I had Peak's Travel Tripod (but sheesh $600 is a lot for it). I do admit that aesthetically I pretty much prefer Pete's bag, BUT, that is only because I look like a Ninja Turtle with Peak Design's bag on my back. Not even kidding, I transform into Donatello with it on.
Just so it's said... ninja turtles are basically the coolest. So when you say you look like Donatello, I took that as a good thing.

That was a huge dilemma for me which of these two bad boys to buy more than a year ago. Even though I have a lto of accesories from PD I decided to go with PM x Nomatic. Sure it's big and hefty, changing the customization inside takes me about two hours everytime, because all these velcrows are just catching everywhere. And hiking with it it's nightmare for my shoulders. But what sold me over was the little inception transformer cube/backpack, that was just so genius. And it aligns with how I think traveling should be: You get to your base camp and then mostly you don't need all your stuff for some smaller trips, just some, and for that purpose the Cubepack it's so efficient... Then I bought a big telephoto lens which I can technically fit inside but my camera body and second lens has to be in the compartment area and that's not ideal especially if you have your bottle inside as well. Basically now I've got too much stuff for the Cubepack but too little for the actual big bag. And I'm quite sure that I'm not using it properly bcs hiking? Probably better options out there. But as a travel bag or for medium to longer trips I can see myself loving this.

The PM bag plus the smaller bag is a great idea or tossing a wandrd veer packable bag into any bigger bag but then you run into the issue that you have 🤦🏻♂️ Maybe some day we’ll have the answer

Osprey Farview has entered the chat :) I have the Nomatic for when my purpose is photography and I am heavy on gear. If I need a travel backpack that I can use with a cube while also loading up with items, I would probably take Nomatic cube bag with Osprey Farview 40 bag. Back support is unmatched. Photo/travel hybrid bag vs Travel/adventure hybrid bag, the adventure bag will win on comfort and ability to walk with load.
I think PD is a cool bag too, I just happened to find Nomatic first.

A few things I think you missed with this review
On the Peter bag those adjustment straps at the top of the shoulder straps are called load shifting adjusters... when you have the waist strap done up you can transfer the weight of the bag to your waist and off your shoulders by loosening them this also gives massive airflow behind your back.
the Peter bag also has a frame/ chassis built into it
the peak design does not have this
Also iv ask a few peoples about the Peter bag and they’ve said it took some time for the straps to wear in before they become comfortable.
Other people have commented that the peak design bag straps dig in when fully loaded because of the thinness of them
So how long did you use each bag before this review????????
I love peak design but those straps + no chassis or load shifter is a massive fail on their behalf also bad air ventilation on the back is also an oversight some pretty big oversights for a very innovative company to make on a bag made for carrying heavy camera gear

Thanks for your input! I did mention the load shifting straps but that’s interesting to know the specific way they were intended. Also, I timhing that the frame/ chassis might actually be the reason I found the PM bag less comfortable. Like I mentioned, it felt stiff whereas the peak could mold to a more comfortable shape.
I haven’t had the “cutting in” problem with the peak design one and I’ve definitely loaded it right up with gear. And I thought the same about the PM straps but I wore it quite a bit and they haven’t really changed much.
I’ve owned the PM bag for about 7 months and the PD for about 3. If I had to guess, I’d say they’ve both gotten pretty equal use. I put the PM through one really big hike and a trip and I’ve been wearing the PD bag for several hikes and a lot of daily stuff (since I can’t travel right now I tried to kind of simulate that scenario instead).
Neither bag is absolutely perfect, but I am quite happy with both. And I’m definitely excited to see what either of them will do with the next version.
Best review on UA-cam for both these bags. I wish I would have come across this one way sooner. Peak design all the way. But not hating on Peter’s either.

They are both exceptional quality backpacks, but I'll never understand how a bag can cost 370+$. They're overpriced af. It's a bag. Yes materials are great and expensive, it protects your expensive gear, but it's just A BAG. It's a big no for me

On the PD zippers you missed the fact that some of the pulls have a button that lets you tie them into some of the loops to help them stay shut. They can still open enough that you might lose some change or even keys maybe but it helps keep them in place. Especially if you don't open the side access from the bottom.
I got both of them.. I ended up using the Peak Design one for personnal travel and the PM one for work. Because on the PM one I can put way more stuff as camera equipement than with the PD. I got all size of camera cubes and even the large one can't get enought stuff in it. Also in the PM bag I can put my DJI RS2 in the front pocket where i put some comfy stuffs inside the big internal pocket to protect him and all my other stuff inside the main compartment. Like that I can just go with everything i need with just one bag.
Got into this a bit skeptical - expecting you to rave about the PM bag like half the YT gang... (regardless of being better/worse)
But got very excited to see a full and fair review for both of these bags!

@@dunnadidit Handles: you said you liked the peak design because they made the handles you use the most, more comfortable(the top handle). While the Nomatic has the nicer top handle, and another handle used for hanging, I don’t see why you gave that to the Peak Design.
Access/Camera Compartment: You talk in depth about the different camera cube options for the Peak Design but don’t show any of the accessories offered with the Nomatic. In my opinion the camera cube on the Nomatic which turns into another backpack is a huge selling point. As for your “sideways camera trick”, it pretty much defeats the purpose of having side access as well as putting the side of your camera pointed directly into your back...I personally do not like that.
Dividers: You wished that the Nomatic bag came with more and the PD came with extras, but didn’t you buy the medium camera cube separate from the backpack? So in reality the PD comes with no dividers. Also the dividers are just so much more premium on the Nomatic, you can feel the cheap flimsy nature of the PD in comparison.
Comfort: Very subjective category in which I don’t think you go in depth enough. If you thought the materials were better on the Nomatic but then criticized them for being stiff...I don’t really understand your reasoning. The better materials will last longer and will break in. I can appreciate the PD being more comfortable for you, but i think this is a throwaway category.
I enjoy both bags, but for me the Nomatic is far superior in my opinion and the way you compared them to me feels like you are slightly biased towards PD products.
I appreciate your points. Some of it is definitely subjective (which I definitely tried to make apparent in the video) but let me clarify a few things just in case anyone else is reading this as well
Handles - PM has the comfier top handle. But the rest of them are too tight to the bag for me to use... like I actually don't use them. And they're not very comfortable the couple of times I tried. PD has a reasonably comfy top handle, comfortable back handle (which is a great addition and the second most used one on the bag) that the PM doesn't have. And the side and bottom handles I said are less comfortable than the top handle but still totally useable with the amount of clearance. So for my use (maybe I have big hands) the PM has 1 usable handle and the PD has 5. That's why the PD won that category for me.
Access/Camera Compartment - The reason i had to include a camera cube was to put them at more of an even starting point. Without any camera cube, the PD isn't really a camera bag and thus doesn't really make sense for me to talk about on my channel as a camera channel. I love some of the nomatic extras and agree that the camera cube/backpack is a great add on but they're an extra cost as well and just make the comparison even more complicated since PD also offers extras and accessories as well. So if I talk about the PM cam cube, I should talk about the PD tech pouch and then do I also compare both companies compression packing cubes too? It just gets all too messy. The PM base model vs. the PD with a camera cube seemed like a great and reasonably equal starting place.
As for side access. Thats one of the reasons I like the PD side access more than the PM one. Because I don't use side access to get to my camera, but I do use it to get to other stuff that lives above the camera cube (which I talked about a little). With the PD I can do that from either side, with the PM I cant. And I cant feel any difference whether the side of the camera is pointed towards my back because of the extra depth in the PD. (I also don't really notice it when I've tried it with the PM but it causes other issues)
Dividers - I think we just disagree on this one, I don't find the PD ones to be lower quality at all. And I already talked about the cube situation and why I included that.
Comfort - yeah this was a tough category to do at all because it's going to be very different. When I talked about materials, I was talking more about the apparent quality of them but left comfort out of it since that got it's own category. Nomatic seems like it might hold up better over time but thats just based on assumptions and personal experience testing both these bags. And as for the comfort... I literally just used both bags and explained which one was more comfortable for me. Cant say much beyond that and it wouldn't be fair to say "the PD was more comfy but I'm going to give this to the PM because I think in 3 years it will be the more comfortable one" lol.
Hopefully that clarifies a bit for you or for anyone else reading who was confused about some of these points. As far as the bias... I think I did a pretty good job at laying things out equally and explaining my position but sure... I knew after my experience with both bags which one I preferred... when I made up the list of categories and such, I didn't think it would go as far one way as it did. But I never claimed that this was completely unbiased (that doesn't exist... unbiased reviews are a myth... that would just be reading a spec sheet and even then its probably biased in some way lol)

Ever since pm came out with his bag, I already knew the PD would crush it. The problem with PM's bag is the fact that it's not modular. Try bringing it on a week long vacation and you'll instantly realize you'll need another carry on to keep everything else other than camera gear. And if that was the argument, that PM's is just a camera bag, then I'd just go with the Lowepro protatic 450 aw and a carry on. Whereas the pd travel line can store all your camera gear and your essentials for one bag travel. I dove deep into the PD travel line and you'll know why it's the perfect bag after watching it.
Talking about dividers, if u were to throw in all the accessories both bags have to offer, PD has PM beat as well with the tech pouch and the small camera cube. Yes PM's has a cube that turns into a backpack, but that's only useful when your not carrying the actual backpack itself. Whereas on the PD, you can carry the backpack and attach a camera strap on to the small camera cube as a sling or personal item when you're bringing it on a plane. All those separate pouches for filters and memory cards are more reasons you'll forget something behind when your on location. Pd tech pouch is an all in one solution that keeps everything together and I've turned that into a power station as well. Side access is the #1 thing I look for in all my bags, it's the most handy thing when you've got a drone that you can launch without even having to take your bag off. You can use it for cameras too but that's where PD also wins. Not that it's part of the camera bag but pd has the camera clip where my camera usually sits when I'm out vlogging for even quicker access, making the side access available for the drone.
As for comfort, I've been traveling with just the pd bag around the world, one bag carry for 2 weeks at a time. Vlogging with cameras, lights, tripod, gopros and drones along with all my essentials and it wasn't uncomfortable at all. Looking at the straps on PM's bag, they'd probably do great as well. But again, I wouldn't be able to fit more than 3 days worth of clothes with PM's bag.
Thanks for your input on this. Just to be clear, I was given BOTH of these bags from the brands to do reviews on. I know you mentioned other people who got the PM bag free so I figured I should say that. Still on level playing ground though.
I own the Peter McKinnon backpack and have now resigned it to a luggage/clothing bag when I travel and use my Lowepro 450 AW as my main everyday camera bag or I use my Neewer 2 in 1 Roller Camera Backpack. I found certain advantages (very few) with the Peter McKinnon backpack... (1) the accessories....The extra accessories like the backpack with the camera compartment in the bottom for day trips is great to some degree, BUT the one issue I found with it along with the main camera backpack.... NEITHER fits my Nikon Z6 or Z7 properly!!! I had a hell of a time fitting my Nikon Z series cameras in them and I got the impression that Peter had them designed with those who use Canon and Sony Mirrorless cameras and negelected us Nikon users. (2) I LOVE the battery and memory card holders!! They are fantastic and have became a part of my everyday carry kit when out shooting along with the lens filter holder. But the one HUGE disadvantage is THEY COST EXTRA!!! With the accessories including the camera cube/backpack, accessory case, etc... it brought my purchase to over $1100.00
Next I really like Peak Design and their bags along with my Lowepro backpack as on the straps I can attach the Peak Design Camera Clip!!! On the Peter McKinnon bag, it was neglected for those of us who own them and the straps are just way too large and bulky to attach the camera clip. I literally had to cut the threads on one of the really thin exterior fabric straps on the outside of the main straps to attach my camera clip and even then it kept sliding up and down. Next disadvantage of the Peter McKinnon backpack was that side entrance kept getting caught on the Velcro from the separators on the inside. I had a hell of a time getting side access to my gear and my camera with it. Next thing I didn't like is Nomatic's return policy....wanted to return the bag after a few days of owning it and they expect the bag etc... to still have ALL the tags etc.... attached and all original packaging.... I had cut them off and disposed of the packaging so I was unable to return it. So I have resigned it to being a bag I use for carrying lighting gear like my Neewer LED/RGB light panels and Neewer studio strobes when doing shoots, plus I use it for JUST clothing when I travel. But I have to agree....Peak Design for the win!! I now regret not looking at their travel backpack and camera cube etc... But overall I love both my Neewer 2 in 1 roller backpack and Lowepro 450 AW.
But in the end as far as your review goes....If I could go back and reconsider my purchase....I would pick the Peak Design over the Nomatic/Peter McKinnon bag.

Excellent video it speak truth. You cover all the point that some users have notice and more I definitely belive that Peter bag was going to be the winner but as you mention the small details that Peak Design have are those that help and make you like the bag more and more, esthetically Peter nag is stunning but it also comes to usability on that category.
Great job on the review it has all cover and more. Now lets see if they come with a second version of both bags and how they perform, because there was a little teaser from Peter side and we have to wait to see it.

Great review video. As a big PD owner and an owner of the 45L, Im a huge fan of it. For me, point system went as follows PD:15, Tier 1, Nomatic 1. Overall, solid review man - love it.

Cracking review!!!. Just like a girl's handbag.....I think these camera bags are very much a personal preference. I wish I could afford either - I actually can just my wife will yell at me for spending more money on camera gear. I think you were a little unfair on the @PeterMcKinnon bag - but you are judging these bags for your own use - again, I wish I had one of these. From a security perspective, I like the smaller side access and the interior of the McKinnon bag. I guess any1 could make either work for them. Love the highly thought-out design of both. Awesome review man! TBH I love my Nomatic bag but the wheight is just too much! The waist strap was definitely a must while hiking through Austria last year 😜

Both companies released similar smaller versions. But they are actually both quite different bags. I have the PM everyday bag. But the PD smaller one actually doesn’t fit any of their camera cubes to my knowledge so I didn’t think it made sense on my channel. But hopefully I can do something about the PM one soon!

I used Peter’s backpack for a few years, since the preorder stage, but the handles on the main zippers broke because it was too hard to open the main compartment and I can barely you use it at this point. So, a year ago I got the Peak Design everyday backpack 20l, but now I find it a little too small for big shootings and I just ordered the Peak Design travel backpack 45l shown in this video and I can’t wait to use it! 😁
Both bags are nice, wished I’d seen this comparison video a few months ago, as I was really on the fence w/ PD after the Everyday 30L just didn’t cut it for my system gear and It should. In my opinion after years of all their great stuff, this was the low point of all their products.. That said, I went with the Travel backpack for all the awesome features so well thought thru! I haven’t ever regretted it and it does literally everything I wanted and more, and more into the $$$-hole of accessories, all awesome...! That modularity for future growth and changes in MY setup is what PD is all about and nobody comes close to their future-thinking design with the user in mind. You are right, the PD is the superior pack, and I’m a tough customer with multiple and often excessive needs for my work. Ohhh, and one last thing, the “POOP”-colored interior of the McKinnon bag is a deal breaker even if it were the better bag, which it isn’t...

To each their own. I love the “poop” color. Most bags have a boring gray interior.
I love my Peak Design! Its been all over the world and it still looks brand new. Just some wet wipes to knock off some dirt and its clean! Kudos PD!
PD 45L all day.. You can take out the camera cube and use the bag as a regular bag when you get to your destination. You can also put a sling in the PD 45L. PD also has one of the best customer service. Only con with the PD are the straps.. they will rip thru your shoulders... wish they made a thicker strap..
Nomatic isn't the best with customer service. Had two of their bags with a failed zipper and they didn't honor the warranty. Stopped buying Nomatic after that. Plus, not everyone likes McKinnon...

We got 2x PD 45L and bought multiple cubes. We just load up the cube that contains the gear for the job.
We have a video cube, a photography cube, a live stream cube, lens only cube, even a support cube (for all the effects, lens filters, tools etc)
We can mix and match and load it to the PD 45L bag. Plus storage and organization is easy cause the gear are already in the cubes.
For the Nomatic PM bag, you got to take all your stuff out and load it every time you need a certain config.
One point for camera cubes for sure!
Never thought i would say this, but my favorite travel and backpack for photography is actually not a backpack at all but works fantastic as one. The Peak Design Travel Dufflepack 65. You should really try it. After over a decade traveling and shooting we just clicked and are now best buds :)

Side loading laptop pockets are a double-edged sword. Convenient, but if you forget to zip up the side and then sling the bag over your shoulder your laptop will go flying out. Ask me how I know. Also easier for a thief to grab your computer from outside.
Does the peak design bag fit under an airplane seat?
If I had to guess, I’d say no or most airplanes. It’s fairly thick especially once it’s packed. Definitely in the overhead bin though.

Yeah, I had to go with a tie on that category because they're both great in their own regard. It was one of the reasons I wanted to separate that category from the dividers too.

Peak Design is dope but I have to buy a camera cube to carpartmentalize the bag? Thats BS in terms of cost and material. Thats not environmentally sound or cost conscience to the customer. I'm actually pissed I brought it and sticking with the 30L until I figure my next move

Ive went through 4 peak design backpacks already and they all failed in the same spot... the zippers broke...... which blows!

I received my Peak Design Backpack today ordered from there amazon site... Wrong item sent green instead of black and in a dirty used condition. the packaging looked like Edward had wrapped it? I will be returning both the backpack and med tote for ? Perhaps peter as it is the only thing out there??? Update: the shoulder straps suck!!!
Some of these comparisons seemed like they were going to be a point for Nomatic but then all of a sudden were for Peak lol. I used the Peak Design bag for a long while and have recently tried out the Nomatic one. Nomatic one just feels more like a sturdy protection bag with simply less stuff. This sounds like a down side but in the PD bag, for all of the additional pockets and such...I didn't find myself using them. I guess it's good that they're there but the Nomatic bag has everything I need and more robust/premium materials. Not sure the cost is worth it so I may end up returning it but I rate these a lot closer than this.
The other thing not mentioned about the Peak that is relevant to me at least, is that to get a fully customizable bag for a variety of gear and other items, you need at least a couple of the different cubes. Which if you need to buy any two of them you're then at a higher price point than the Mckinnon bag which just has the dividers that you can make do whatever you need. I have the medium cube for PD and found that I would love to get the small and/or large but then it's extra money into a system. Which I guess if you're all in on PD stuff then it isn't an issue.
@Dunna Did It I own none of these, but a Lowepro Whistler Backpack 450 AW II, because I'm also the kind of person who always takes way too much gear with me. I was about to get the Peak Design when looking for bags, but the Lowepro just came out cheaper. I followed the Peter McKinnon kickstarter, but ended up not pledging because altough it looks great, I found it too pricey for what it actually offers. But the Peak Design is still high on my list. If they come up with a V2 that makes it even a bit better (like full flapping front and back like the Peter McKinnon one) then I'd probably get one.
I think a lot of people opt for the lowepro stuff. Even Peter used to be all about it!
@@dunnadidit True, he did use the Protactic and the Whistler too I think. They're good, rugged bags. And the Whistler, when filled with 2 bodies, 5 lenses, a drone and controller, spare batteries, filters, tripod, etc... It is still comfortable. The straps are great and the waist strap is soooo good and comfy.
