a utility vest, or some people would call it a fishing vest, is really handy when you can't pack all your stuff in your bag, especially when traveling on budget airline where the weight limit is tight. I usually put some of my heaviest clothes into a packing cube, then just stuff it into my vest when I board a plane. The packing cube will double as my cushion / pillow while I'm on the plane.
Omg I love those vest. There are so many big and small hidden pockets. Looks very discreet, tactical looking, and you can layer it. I bought it because I remember some OG photography wear these.
On Wednesday I was waiting at a JetBlue gate to board when two flights were simultaneously canceled, including mine. All passengers were instructed to leave the gated area and go to the main ticket counter. I had no checked luggage and could rush to the counter. Still had to wait nearly an hour to see someone and was put on a flight that required me to spend the night in an airport just to make the early morning connection. BUT MY POINT HERE IS that those forced to go get their checked luggage first had to wait in a multi-hour line and who knows what kind of alternative flights they were given. So often, it really pays not to have to check luggage.
Totally agree about not checking luggage. But after a similar situation last summer, I can't stop encouraging people to book travel on a card that includes trip delay insurance; it allowed me to walk past everyone in that long line, check into the expensive on-site airport hotel, easily walk to the gate the following day, and file a claim for full reimbursement once I got home.

For washing clothes, take a few laundry detergent sheets in a zip lock bag. They take up virtually no space and dissolve easily in water. I like Earth Breeze.
I've been interested in this, how exactly do you use them to wash clothes? I haven't found anywhere that says how to use it for cleaning clothes whilst travelling
@Tekartsu well, if a sheet would do a whole load in a washer and I'm only doing laundry in sink, I tear odd a piece enough to make it soapy in the sink and hand wash.
One of the big keys I found to smoother traveling was ditching every liquid and gel, in the future we may be able to carry such things again, but it's too much of a pain that security especially when you're passing through multiple airports a day. Laundry detergent sheets are a great solution. As our shampoo and conditioner bars, sunscreen sticks, etc. With no laptop, just a folding phone, and no liquids or gels, getting through security is so much quicker and easier! Still on my to do list, good, slip on, shoes. Or to just avoid the USA because most countries (with some exceptions) let you keep your shoes on!
I have been able to find small packages (10 sheets) at Dollar Tree! The other day I also found some at my local Target. I won't have to order from Amazon anymore. It's the only laundry soap I use now. When traveling I just put a few sheets in a ziplock bag. At home it takes up very little space plus less plastic to deal with

Clipping excessive items onto you bag is a sure way to get your bag inspected and you being pulled over. The horrific UK 2015 incident is still in everyone's memory. Never take things like this lightly
My tip traveling light in the US…mailing to or from destination. US priority mail is the same price regardless of weight, so sometimes a tight heavy package shipped, makes the trip to or from a place much easier. I often ship home all my dirty clothes or heavy items, then relax my arms while traveling.
I think it is good idea for any country. This summer I went for beach vacation and have bought a lot of cosmetics on location (shower gel, shampoo, sunscreen, face wash, after sun balsam), last day of my trip I packed them with some dirty clothes, souvenirs and book I already read and I shipped it to myself. I bought a beach tent 2 days before trip, so it was sent to my vacation location and I knew it will be too big to send back home, so I will need to travel back with it. I was traveling by train, so I had to plan how I pack to be able to hop on and off the train by myself. I had really light carry on going back, so having extra tent wasn't the problem :)
Tech tip: If your phone supports it, bring a USB-C dongle with HDMI and USB, HDMI cable, portable mouse(Optional, touchscreen works as a touchpad) and foldable keyboard. You can turn that phone into a portable entertainment system. If you game, get a controller that clips on your phone. Some hotels support airplay or mirroring too. If you have the dongle, you can bring a flash drive to save extra games, movies, or use a backup to your phone.
My favorite souvenir are underpants. I usually bring worn out ones with me, toss them during my vacation and buy new ones. By now almost all ofmy underwear is from somewhere around the globe and every morning I get a little travel-nostalgic when putting them on... I also buy my deodorant and body wash at my destination. Then it is also a little souvenir that i take home and i don't have to pack it on my way to my destination.
Everyone should try carry-on travel once but my advice is to default to carry-on only but don't force it if it doesn't make sense. If you want to be mobile, use many types of transit, in a warm climate, or traveling for a short period of time, then carry-on is the move. I've done carry-on only for most countries but I've always checked a bag when I'm traveling to cold places, bringing multiple cameras and laptops, or staying in a country for 6+ months.
Going to cold places doesn't necessarily require checked luggage. It does certainly add a an extra dimension though. I find the bigger challenge is when you're traveling in hot places, but knowing you have to go to a cold one later. If you're just traveling in cold places, big puffy jackets can be worn or thrown over your arm in the airport. But if you're traveling a bunch in hot places first, that jacket becomes real pain!
@@Green__one Yeah I think with the Patagonia nano/micropuff traveling to cold places is much easier. I even saw some people wearing micropuffs when I was in Antarctica.
And roll-on bags are always an option if you need more space and are renting or riding between the airport and hotel. Most laptop bags also have a strap across the back so they easily slip over the handle.
Agreed Kwong, with plastic bags disappearing and stores charging for bags; buying a tote bag that reminds you of your time away is a great souvenir that will be useful.
Solid toiletries , no liquids. Almost all hotels have soap, shampoo, razors, combs, toothbrushes if you ask or forget. Often I get a wardrobe at thrift stores so losing or discarding something to bring back souvenirs or just treasures is necessary. Socks, underwear and even some rollup clothing do fit in a zip closed neck pillow and don't count as an item. If all fails there are stores wherever you are going (counts as a souvenir). Bying something in a pharmacy in a foreign country can be a real adventure and add to your trip experience.

I've been one-bagging across 6 continents over 20 years, primarily with the original design Osprey Porter 46, before making the transition to a 30L pack (a North Face Base Camp Fuse Box)...there's not much to add to this video; well done! But now I'm prepping for full-time/year-round slow travel, so I'm evaluating a few options that require being a stickler about weight, volume, and essential gear...particularly since some of the clothes & shoe options many onebaggers champion aren't practical for someone who's 6'9" (205cm) tall. Going through the various gear has reminded me that there's no perfect solution, even with the latest and greatest bag (including this month's latest version of the Daylite 26+6, which I so wanted to work out)...the most important things to pack are flexibility and a willingness to compromise. I'm currently leaning toward using a combination of two bags already in my collection: (1) for when baggage policies allow, a 1 lb 13oz (0.8kg) packable 60L duffle/pack that's *just* over max carryon dimensions, but easily under-packable (the original Osprey Transporter 60...circa 2013, before the wheeled version was a thing) (2) for when the airline only allows a personal item, and I've got to check the rest (or leave it at an Airbnb while on a short regional excursion), a 1 lb 7oz (0.65kg) 28L backpack (an older version of the Patagonia Refugio 28L) The Refugio's top-stuffing design isn't ideal, but it's real-world capacity is almost identical to the easier-to-pack 26+6 in expanded mode, all while being lighter and more comfortable (for a tall guy's torso, that extra 2 inches of pack height makes a big difference in strap length and bag fit). And what I can't help but focus on is that they're only 3 lbs 4 oz (1.45kg) combined, providing a lot of use-case flexibility while allowing me to keep total weight around 18-20 lbs (8-9 kg). I still might try to scale everything down to fit within a single 30-35 liter bag, but those are already pushing the limits of what can plausibly sneak through an under-seat only bag policy.
Agree with all the advice. I am a motorcyclist. On one of my motorcycles, it has saddle bags with the volume equivalent to a carry on backpack. I can pack for a weekend get away for myself. Packing cubes are my friend.
Motorcycle gear also focuses on smaller sizes and lighter weight. You don't need a Goldwing's worth of panniers and space when a tank bag and dry bag are enough.
While this video is about space, your tip is a huge one for me just so that I don’t forget anything. Or so that I don’t realize I need to buy something at the last minute. I usually have a designated area where I start to place everything weeks in advance, and, yes, on bigger trips I’ll have a written list that only gets items checked off once they’re placed in this area.

Interesting to see what items have fallen off to the bottom: International calling card, Traveller's checks, printed guidebooks, preaddressed mailing labels, pictural translation card, spare batteries, paper maps, paper journal, pocket photo album, voltage transformer, travel alarm clock. Hairbrush. All largely replaced with a cellphone now, a charger, power bank and a few cables. Except the hairbrush, that's replaced with a nice hat 😂. Oh you kids don't know how easy you have it. Once, pre-Google, every trip started by ordering a paper travel map from a store in DC where one could order maps from anywhere. Not needed so much for travel now but still good for dreaming.

I have a years-old packing masterlist with everything I could ever need. When a trip is approaching, I duplicate the master and start culling it into the needs of that specific trip. If anything new shows up during the trip, it gets added back to the masterlist. If anything isn't used on the trip, it's put into a "this wasn't necessary" category, to help pack better next time.
I once brought exactly one Tshirt on a two week trip. It meant that I got two shirt souvenirs and learned how important it was to take the time to look at all of my items instead of packing bit by bit.

Yall should check out the flextail tiny pump 2x. I found it through backpacking, but they include an adapter to those vacuum bags. Charges with USB C, has a little light on it, and it'll inflate backpacking sleeping pads if tou need thst kind of thing
I love mine! It makes inflating my air mattress a breeze! I pack camping gear because I go to a couple festivals, so I still have one checked bag. Taking off in a week 😊
My new hack is to just not bring as much stuff, but rather than pack say 7-8 days of clothes, I pack about 4 and bring some travel laundry detergent and can get 8 days or so out of 4 or 5 sets of clothes. I mean it does mean that I hav eto do a load of laundry which may take up to 2 hours for wash and dry, but it also means I can probably save about $100+ in baggage fees. Usually I can get away with about 5 days worth of clothes without the need to do laundry but this has become my new way of avoiding checking a bag (only time it doesn't work is if you don't have access to laundry facilities where you are, but you can always wash in the bathtub too).
I've been traveling carry-on only since a few years. This year I went to Nepal and Cambodia, which meant I had to pack two very different sets of clothing, one for the hot and humid tropical weather in Cambodia, and warm clothes for the mountains in Nepal during winter, but I managed to put it all in my carry-on, and also including my photography gear. Some other tips: If you are unsure whether you'll need something during your trip, just don't bring it. Take only the things you positively know you'll need and/or you know you can't find at your destination if you need them. Chances are all that "just in case" stuff would only take unnecessary space and height in your luggage. And in case you actually need something, you could most probably get it at your destination. Check what things will the hotels where you're going provide (toiletries, laundry, etc), so you don't bring redundant stuff. I even check if there's a power outlet near the bed in my room, so I don't bring an extension cord. In case of cooler weather at night, prefer to wear layers of the same shirts you're bringing, instead of carrying a bulky and heavy jacket.
I have two international trips lined up soon and I'm liking the idea to do them on a single bag (+ personal item). For clothing, I try to cover a whole week's worth of clean garments before needing to hit the laundry. Challenge is I often travel to book and artist fairs and i can not NOT bring stuff along - but your suggestion to arrange post-event shipping sounds like worth a try, even if it's an extra cost - but all be for traveling light.
I have shipped things home before and that works great. I am going to NL and UK soon. I have a checked bag with all my camping gear, (so that's most of my nights lodging sorted) and my clothing still fits in carry-on. I also have some gifts for friends packed, so coming home will be lighter 😊

Looks like there's a water bottle dangling from the backpack as well, I know they've had points in other videos about not attaching a ton of stuff to your backpack like that. But they've definitely also reviewed products meant to attach a hat to the outside of a backpack, so who knows what they're getting at.
My travel life has become vastly more enjoyable since I stopped having any carry on. I will never go back. No worries, no struggles, just a casual experience. One checked bag. Simple. I used to do the carry on only, but it so much better to not be the baggage handler. Your results may vary, but for me it was a game changer. Commuter or trans-Atlantic, all my flights feel very free.
I travel carry on only but I check in my travel bag when I do longer routes like Europe - SE Asia with layover. One checked in baggage is in the price, but a 4-5h layover is much nicer, especially if you have to transfer on some crazy Chinese airport. My tiny 5-6kg bag is checked in, but I have a sling or some other tiny thing with me, with batteries, toothbrush, documents and phone. I wouldn't check in a bag if it was a one leg flight though.
Same, was trying to do carry-on only when I figured I’m not in a rush, and I would rather wait to get my bag and get much more in checked in bag and be free of having to haggle a carry-on in airport and on plane.
I checked my bag. when I got it two days after my arrival, the AirTag was and a number of items were missing. The airline stated that it wasn’t their problem because they hadn’t hired the checkers and I needed to report missing items within 24 hours of my flight - hard to do when my luggage arrived 48 hours after I had. Inconvenient, but now we do carry on only.
I use a carryon backpack made for airline traveling. A wheeled carryon is easier in the airport, but if you have to walk around a lot before you get to your hotel or hostel, a backpack allows you to be more mobile. Merino wool t-shirts can be worn a few days before needing to be washed, thus fewer t-shirts are required. I pack a very small mini backpack that packs into itself and is only about three inches square and two inches thick. This mini backpack is either empty on the trip there, or with gifts if visiting friends and family, but for the return trip, it’s filled with items I bought on the trip and it becomes my personal bag that goes under the seat in front of me. Also, for those neck pillows that don’t count as an item, you can buy empty ones that you can stuff with clothing. Also, Scotty Vest makes multi pocket vests that can hold extra gear and help prevent you from being picked-pocketed in busy tourist areas.
I have been doing 1 bag travel for a number of years now. (Well I cheat with a sling bag for my personal item in front). It is great. No waiting in lines for bag drop offs and I am usually one of the first out of customs since I dont have to wait for bags. And never any lost luggage and easy to change flights. I am a marino wool fan with a bar of shampoo soap and a sink for laundry. (or just bring it in the shower with me)
Careful, gate agents are starting to require folks to put those slings and fanny packs into their bags. Airlines are squeezing out pennies from customers nowadays.
Did just carry on for the first time last summer - saved me when the flight was cancelled. However, I can't get down to one bag because of medical issues. So I used a knapsack at my seat + a quality roller carry on bag. I now use a light, easily rolls over any surface, durable, and checkable Briggs & Riley. Smaller planes "sky check" them at the gate so keep valuables in the pack, but it's still considered carry on and is almost always ready by the time you exit the plane. Another tip: if you're staying in nice hotels, they'll do laundry for you. Learned from an experienced traveler that what I thought was expensive and frivolous was actually awesome and surprisingly reasonable when you can't do the laundry in your room (e.g. it won't dry in time, or the bride spilled Aperol Spritz all over your dry-clean-only cocktail dress). I still need to perfect flying just carry on when I need a mix of dressy clothes and casual... future trips!
These were some really great tips! I'm still working out the kinks in how much I pack and what I pack it in. I've found that backpacks and duffle bags just don't work for me any more due to a bad shoulder. So I've switched over to a small wheeled bag that's about the same size as the backpacks were. I can still carry it with my good arm if need be, but I don't have to schlep it around anymore. And for the places I tend to travel, it works perfectly fine.
Not dealing with checks doesn't equal 1 bag though. You can ofen pay a little more to bring two bags on to a plane, neither checked in. We all want to avoid Hold Luggage but I find one backpack can be extreme. This is especially true as Airlines are constantly reducing the measurements of luggage. Some airlines the free alotment is extreme.
@@bradavon Personal Item Only can work if you dress like a college student on vacation, stay in hostels, and your only packed footwear is a pair of sandals. I guess you can get away with that in your 20's when you mostly socialize with other bummy travel kids from the hostel. If you want to look like you respect the museums and restaurants and clubs and, most of all the people that you visit you'll need a pair of real shoes and a shirt with buttons, a pair of long pants and perhaps even - horrors - a sports jacket. That can be done Carry-On Only but requires an overhead bag. A little more hassle and risk and expense but well worth it for the richer experience and local acceptance IMO.
I bring my old t-shirts (those with holes or slightly torn), underwear and socks (usually those with holes) with me. Once I'm done with them, I throw them away 😆 and my bag is always lighter on my way home.
I used Rick Steves tips for travel back in the 80s-90s. He only used carry-on and also recommended buying some small things like soap and toiletries locally.
I love carryon only but when I need more for a work trip I used to do backpack that fits under the seat and small roller bag that fits in the overhead bin. It seems like lately, airlines are running out of bin space more and more and then I'm forced to gate check, completely defeating the purpose. I don't know if new planes have less overhead space, or people are just putting two bags in the overhead instead of one under the seat but it is pretty annoying
I want to travel 5 weeks next year. Although i wanted to travel with just a back pack , it wont work for me. I have athritis in my spine and recently packed a 40 l bag and found it to heavy. I will take a 20" roller bag suitcase and perhaps a 20-30L backpack that can sit on the suitcase. I have travelled with a mega large suitcase when i was young. I wouldn't recommend it . I think carry on and personal bag is achievable.
What do you suggest for personal item bag? I recently flew with air france with a carry on trolley and a grocery tote bag, since not even my smallest backpack would fit in the personal item size. Let me know, thanks!
6:28 If you don't mind the extra bulk in your pocket, I might interest you in a foldable phone. you get both a tablet and a phone that you can pull out anywhere, and when you calculate the costs of an ipad and iphone together, the fold makes a lot more sense as it's around the same price or cheaper as just buying both.
Traveling is not the same as vacationing. Traveling is sustainable, both energy-wise and financially. Vacations, not so much. The real starting point is changing your approach to living. Be willing to be a bit less clean. Wash your hair less often. Forget dressy clothes. Leave all the soap at home. You don't need to rely on hotels for soap. Go to a store. You don't need to buy "stuff". Refrigerator magnets??? Really? Give some serious thought to your clothing choices. Figure out what will be available at your destination and buy it when you arrive.
All my toiletries are now solid since I started watching you guys a long time ago. I have no liquids except my contact lens solution. It’s been amazing!
Functionality over style. I went to a cold weather country, and I packed a lot of those fleece types no buttons cardigans, and didnt focus on getting the right jacket or sweater for the weather. I got sick due to the cold, and was miserable.
With shopping just look for a FedX UPS or DLS shipping service and ship your items back home on the same day you fly home to your home or a family or friends house and you might be able to ship something to your hotel too. So if you have a two week vacation ship extra things and just take what you need for three days. And you could just use a credit card no carry on and ship everything back.
I launder in my Matador Freerain 24l stuffable daypack. It's seam-sealed like a drybag with roll top closure. Dual purpose, it keeps contents ultra-dry when used as a day pack. Very compact.
Carry On doesn't always mean Backpack Only though. I've tried Backpack Only to save money but found it just to restrictive for the cost of being able to bring a second bag on to the plane. Hold luggage can be costly but personally I find restricting yourself to just a Backpack is too restrictive. Paying that little extra to bring a second bag on to the plane makes all the difference ot a trip. This is especially true as Airlines are constantly reducing the measurements of luggage. Some airlines the free alotment is extreme.
Back when air travel was civilized you could ALWAYS bring a PI and OH bag included in even the basic tkt price. That's what "carry-on" travel WAS. There were even specialized OH packs with small PI bags that clipped onto them so that you only had one thing to carry once you left the aircraft. Before that, in the 1980's I modified an Eagle Creek pack myself by sewing Fastex buckles onto it so I could clip on my under seat PI soft briefcase style bag.
I typically pack the lightest and smallest stowaway duffle bag that I have when traveling. It takes up less space than a t-shirt and it allows me to expand into a checked bag with a carry on for the return trip if I really want to.
Thanks for all the videos! I learn a lot from you guys! My one problem for going carry-on only is the weight of my bag. All my stuff can fit, but sometimes the weight goes over the allotted weight when flying international. What do you guys do?
Cargo pants are your friend. Power banks, chargers and cables are small but dense and fit in certain pants pockets. Don't let'em weigh that water bottle full, water weighs a kilo per liter of course. Once you board you can shift items freely. Make sure you're downsizing your toiletries; you can get by with very few liquid (heavy) toiletries. Also, look closely at the weight of your bag itself. There are light carry-ons and not so light ones of similar size. Tighten down straps as much as possible, a large loose bag is more likely to get weighed than a tight smaller bag especially if you are a small-framed person carrying it. Make sure you WEAR your carry-on when you check in, and stand in such a way as to hide it as much as possible. A small portable luggage scale is invaluable. As a last resort there are the neck pillow, food bag and fishing line tricks.
For me, as an amateur photographer with two cameras and multiple lenses and peripherals, weight is the problem whenever the carrier has a carryon weight limit. In addition to cargo pants with multiple pockets, I wear on the plane a lightweight fleece with many small and large pockets (find these on line). I weigh my bags with a luggage scale before I travel, determine how much I'm over the limit, and then put heavy items like camera batteries, lenses, tablet, and charging brick in my various pockets. Some airlines have ridiculously low carryon weight limits, but for most with limits of between 22 and 26 pounds, this can help get your carryon baggage below the limit. And when flying international I try to stick with a U.S. carrier (Delta, United, American) as they don't seem to have weight limits and none has ever weighed my luggage (although if its codeshare with a foreign carrier, then the foreign carrier's weight limit will apply, so beware).
Could you guys review the GDNasist 40L travel backpack. It’s a budget backpack with several tech compartments including a laptop and tablet sleeve. I want to know is it really 40L and is it a good buy.
I once tried jockstrap and tophat only, but the damn gate agent told me I didn't meet the dress requirements for their airline. And it was VERY nice tophat!
fanny pack and hollow head pillow count as attire not luggage. Bring cash and don't pack cheap junk just buy it at your destination. Depending on distance dont be afraid to have a friend ship a box of extras to your motel if your staying put for a few days. Polyester is the real secret especially in remote areas.

have you guys considered the flextailgear vacuum pump in combination with vacuum bags? It's the tiniest pump I've seen to date and it packs a punch. Should have an adapter for the vacuum bags which would big a good 1 2 punch
Real hack. Most airlines weight your bag at check in, so pack your technology and heavy stuff in cargo pockets. Plus a jacket on your waist. Or just give it to a friend while you check in.
Great video!!! I always have a small checked bag for flights. I do, however, have a backpack and fanny pack for my carry-on and personal item. I also have a vest of some kind with extra pockets.
I travel a lot for work and need business casual, but I don’t want to have to pack two kinds of shoes. Any recommendations on shoes I can wear with a suit and with shorts?
I like to: 1. Wear slippers while travelling because so many airports required me to remove my shoes. With slippers, I dont even need to use my hands, and I can always change into shoes after reaching my accommodation, or if that country is absurdly cold, I can always change into warmer shoes in the airport after clearing immigration. But so far, I didnt need to do that even in winter. 2. No belt, no chances of me getting stopped over a buckle. 3. Only carry my phone in my pocket, everything else in the bag. I can always pay for stuff with Samsung Pay, or take out my headphones and neck pillow on the plane.
My absolute biggest obstacle to one bag travel is not having a pocket knife. I always carry a pocket knife with me, actually 2 I have a Swiss army knife and then a folding lockable blade pocket knife. For travel I would be perfectly fine with just traveling with my Swiss army knife, but the concept of doing so without one is a big area of contention for me.
@mattsheets I carry and use my knife every day. Thousands of uses. And if I'm far from home I'd need a pocket knife even more because wouldn't have one otherwise.
@mattsheets same exact things I can use it for every other day, opening packages, cutting cordage, uses in the outdoors are plentiful, safety (cutting things like seatbelts), first aid, knives are an extremely multi use item that can also literally save lives in an emergency situation. And to nip that subject in the bud immediately, if you travel or even go day to day unprepared for a typical emergency situation than you are putting yourself and loved ones in unnecessary risk, things happen, all the time, and thinking they haven't or won't happen to you is naive at best. A knife is a "multi-tool" all by itself. I carry a knife every day and use it almost every day. For all sorts of things. And when I travel I also like to spend a lot of time in the outdoors (the main reason I travel) and I will never venture into the wilderness without a knife, period.
I definitely need to downsize my laptop. I lugged a Dell XPS 15 around for a year, along with its big 130 watt charger. A 13.3-14" laptop with a charger I can share with my phone would make a big difference.
I did it and it's such a game changer if you travel often! Really worth it in my opinion, even if the screen is smaller it makes traveling a lot easier 👍
LOL Me when i vacation in resorts, i bring everything, kitchen sink included. You never know what you get, they sell you paradise, but it’s usually less than what you have at home. It’s a five star for very poor people. Just try to buy bug spray, a piece of rope or a bathtub plug duct tape, glue, in a third world country, you won’t find it unless you drive across the country. Not bad if you only leave for a few days, but leave for two to four weeks you are screwed.
The BEST hack came at the end of this video. Experience. Just go for it. If you need the internet to know you shouldn't bring a razor that won't work, or linen shorts to wear while you are training you're probably not going to make it out the front door anyway.
I find all these “one” bag hacks interesting but don’t account for the need for a blazer and tie. While that may not be a regular thing, there are still many reasons why one would need to bring them.
a utility vest, or some people would call it a fishing vest, is really handy when you can't pack all your stuff in your bag, especially when traveling on budget airline where the weight limit is tight. I usually put some of my heaviest clothes into a packing cube, then just stuff it into my vest when I board a plane. The packing cube will double as my cushion / pillow while I'm on the plane.
Omg I love those vest. There are so many big and small hidden pockets. Looks very discreet, tactical looking, and you can layer it.
I bought it because I remember some OG photography wear these.
On Wednesday I was waiting at a JetBlue gate to board when two flights were simultaneously canceled, including mine. All passengers were instructed to leave the gated area and go to the main ticket counter. I had no checked luggage and could rush to the counter. Still had to wait nearly an hour to see someone and was put on a flight that required me to spend the night in an airport just to make the early morning connection. BUT MY POINT HERE IS that those forced to go get their checked luggage first had to wait in a multi-hour line and who knows what kind of alternative flights they were given. So often, it really pays not to have to check luggage.
Totally agree about not checking luggage. But after a similar situation last summer, I can't stop encouraging people to book travel on a card that includes trip delay insurance; it allowed me to walk past everyone in that long line, check into the expensive on-site airport hotel, easily walk to the gate the following day, and file a claim for full reimbursement once I got home.

For washing clothes, take a few laundry detergent sheets in a zip lock bag. They take up virtually no space and dissolve easily in water. I like Earth Breeze.

@Tekartsu well, if a sheet would do a whole load in a washer and I'm only doing laundry in sink, I tear odd a piece enough to make it soapy in the sink and hand wash.
One of the big keys I found to smoother traveling was ditching every liquid and gel, in the future we may be able to carry such things again, but it's too much of a pain that security especially when you're passing through multiple airports a day. Laundry detergent sheets are a great solution. As our shampoo and conditioner bars, sunscreen sticks, etc. With no laptop, just a folding phone, and no liquids or gels, getting through security is so much quicker and easier!
Still on my to do list, good, slip on, shoes. Or to just avoid the USA because most countries (with some exceptions) let you keep your shoes on!
I have been able to find small packages (10 sheets) at Dollar Tree! The other day I also found some at my local Target. I won't have to order from Amazon anymore. It's the only laundry soap I use now. When traveling I just put a few sheets in a ziplock bag. At home it takes up very little space plus less plastic to deal with

My tip traveling light in the US…mailing to or from destination. US priority mail is the same price regardless of weight, so sometimes a tight heavy package shipped, makes the trip to or from a place much easier.
I often ship home all my dirty clothes or heavy items, then relax my arms while traveling.
I think it is good idea for any country. This summer I went for beach vacation and have bought a lot of cosmetics on location (shower gel, shampoo, sunscreen, face wash, after sun balsam), last day of my trip I packed them with some dirty clothes, souvenirs and book I already read and I shipped it to myself. I bought a beach tent 2 days before trip, so it was sent to my vacation location and I knew it will be too big to send back home, so I will need to travel back with it. I was traveling by train, so I had to plan how I pack to be able to hop on and off the train by myself. I had really light carry on going back, so having extra tent wasn't the problem :)
Tech tip: If your phone supports it, bring a USB-C dongle with HDMI and USB, HDMI cable, portable mouse(Optional, touchscreen works as a touchpad) and foldable keyboard. You can turn that phone into a portable entertainment system. If you game, get a controller that clips on your phone. Some hotels support airplay or mirroring too.
If you have the dongle, you can bring a flash drive to save extra games, movies, or use a backup to your phone.

My favorite souvenir are underpants. I usually bring worn out ones with me, toss them during my vacation and buy new ones. By now almost all ofmy underwear is from somewhere around the globe and every morning I get a little travel-nostalgic when putting them on...
I also buy my deodorant and body wash at my destination. Then it is also a little souvenir that i take home and i don't have to pack it on my way to my destination.

Everyone should try carry-on travel once but my advice is to default to carry-on only but don't force it if it doesn't make sense. If you want to be mobile, use many types of transit, in a warm climate, or traveling for a short period of time, then carry-on is the move. I've done carry-on only for most countries but I've always checked a bag when I'm traveling to cold places, bringing multiple cameras and laptops, or staying in a country for 6+ months.
Going to cold places doesn't necessarily require checked luggage. It does certainly add a an extra dimension though. I find the bigger challenge is when you're traveling in hot places, but knowing you have to go to a cold one later. If you're just traveling in cold places, big puffy jackets can be worn or thrown over your arm in the airport. But if you're traveling a bunch in hot places first, that jacket becomes real pain!
@@Green__one Yeah I think with the Patagonia nano/micropuff traveling to cold places is much easier. I even saw some people wearing micropuffs when I was in Antarctica.
And roll-on bags are always an option if you need more space and are renting or riding between the airport and hotel. Most laptop bags also have a strap across the back so they easily slip over the handle.

Agreed Kwong, with plastic bags disappearing and stores charging for bags; buying a tote bag that reminds you of your time away is a great souvenir that will be useful.
Solid toiletries , no liquids. Almost all hotels have soap, shampoo, razors, combs, toothbrushes if you ask or forget. Often I get a wardrobe at thrift stores so losing or discarding something to bring back souvenirs or just treasures is necessary. Socks, underwear and even some rollup clothing do fit in a zip closed neck pillow and don't count as an item. If all fails there are stores wherever you are going (counts as a souvenir). Bying something in a pharmacy in a foreign country can be a real adventure and add to your trip experience.

An excellent, comprehensive yet concise summary. I've been one-bagging across 6 continents over 20 years, primarily with the original design Osprey Porter 46, before making the transition to a 30L pack (a North Face Base Camp Fuse Box)...there's not much to add to this video; well done!
But now I'm prepping for full-time/year-round slow travel, so I'm evaluating a few options that require being a stickler about weight, volume, and essential gear...particularly since some of the clothes & shoe options many onebaggers champion aren't practical for someone who's 6'9" (205cm) tall. Going through the various gear has reminded me that there's no perfect solution, even with the latest and greatest bag (including this month's latest version of the Daylite 26+6, which I so wanted to work out)...the most important things to pack are flexibility and a willingness to compromise.
I'm currently leaning toward using a combination of two bags already in my collection:
(1) for when baggage policies allow, a 1 lb 13oz (0.8kg) packable 60L duffle/pack that's *just* over max carryon dimensions, but easily under-packable (the original Osprey Transporter 60...circa 2013, before the wheeled version was a thing)
(2) for when the airline only allows a personal item, and I've got to check the rest (or leave it at an Airbnb while on a short regional excursion), a 1 lb 7oz (0.65kg) 28L backpack (an older version of the Patagonia Refugio 28L)
The Refugio's top-stuffing design isn't ideal, but it's real-world capacity is almost identical to the easier-to-pack 26+6 in expanded mode, all while being lighter and more comfortable (for a tall guy's torso, that extra 2 inches of pack height makes a big difference in strap length and bag fit). And what I can't help but focus on is that they're only 3 lbs 4 oz (1.45kg) combined, providing a lot of use-case flexibility while allowing me to keep total weight around 18-20 lbs (8-9 kg). I still might try to scale everything down to fit within a single 30-35 liter bag, but those are already pushing the limits of what can plausibly sneak through an under-seat only bag policy.
Agree with all the advice. I am a motorcyclist. On one of my motorcycles, it has saddle bags with the volume equivalent to a carry on backpack. I can pack for a weekend get away for myself. Packing cubes are my friend.

Motorcycle gear also focuses on smaller sizes and lighter weight. You don't need a Goldwing's worth of panniers and space when a tank bag and dry bag are enough.

I usually have a designated area where I start to place everything weeks in advance, and, yes, on bigger trips I’ll have a written list that only gets items checked off once they’re placed in this area.

Interesting to see what items have fallen off to the bottom: International calling card, Traveller's checks, printed guidebooks, preaddressed mailing labels, pictural translation card, spare batteries, paper maps, paper journal, pocket photo album, voltage transformer, travel alarm clock. Hairbrush. All largely replaced with a cellphone now, a charger, power bank and a few cables. Except the hairbrush, that's replaced with a nice hat 😂. Oh you kids don't know how easy you have it. Once, pre-Google, every trip started by ordering a paper travel map from a store in DC where one could order maps from anywhere. Not needed so much for travel now but still good for dreaming.

I have a years-old packing masterlist with everything I could ever need. When a trip is approaching, I duplicate the master and start culling it into the needs of that specific trip. If anything new shows up during the trip, it gets added back to the masterlist. If anything isn't used on the trip, it's put into a "this wasn't necessary" category, to help pack better next time.
I once brought exactly one Tshirt on a two week trip. It meant that I got two shirt souvenirs and learned how important it was to take the time to look at all of my items instead of packing bit by bit.

Yall should check out the flextail tiny pump 2x. I found it through backpacking, but they include an adapter to those vacuum bags. Charges with USB C, has a little light on it, and it'll inflate backpacking sleeping pads if tou need thst kind of thing
I love mine! It makes inflating my air mattress a breeze! I pack camping gear because I go to a couple festivals, so I still have one checked bag. Taking off in a week 😊
My new hack is to just not bring as much stuff, but rather than pack say 7-8 days of clothes, I pack about 4 and bring some travel laundry detergent and can get 8 days or so out of 4 or 5 sets of clothes. I mean it does mean that I hav eto do a load of laundry which may take up to 2 hours for wash and dry, but it also means I can probably save about $100+ in baggage fees. Usually I can get away with about 5 days worth of clothes without the need to do laundry but this has become my new way of avoiding checking a bag (only time it doesn't work is if you don't have access to laundry facilities where you are, but you can always wash in the bathtub too).
I've been traveling carry-on only since a few years. This year I went to Nepal and Cambodia, which meant I had to pack two very different sets of clothing, one for the hot and humid tropical weather in Cambodia, and warm clothes for the mountains in Nepal during winter, but I managed to put it all in my carry-on, and also including my photography gear.
Some other tips:
If you are unsure whether you'll need something during your trip, just don't bring it. Take only the things you positively know you'll need and/or you know you can't find at your destination if you need them. Chances are all that "just in case" stuff would only take unnecessary space and height in your luggage. And in case you actually need something, you could most probably get it at your destination.
Check what things will the hotels where you're going provide (toiletries, laundry, etc), so you don't bring redundant stuff. I even check if there's a power outlet near the bed in my room, so I don't bring an extension cord.
In case of cooler weather at night, prefer to wear layers of the same shirts you're bringing, instead of carrying a bulky and heavy jacket.
I wish I knew why hanging a hat off my backpack was wrong, as indicated on your video highlight.
I have two international trips lined up soon and I'm liking the idea to do them on a single bag (+ personal item). For clothing, I try to cover a whole week's worth of clean garments before needing to hit the laundry. Challenge is I often travel to book and artist fairs and i can not NOT bring stuff along - but your suggestion to arrange post-event shipping sounds like worth a try, even if it's an extra cost - but all be for traveling light.
I have shipped things home before and that works great. I am going to NL and UK soon. I have a checked bag with all my camping gear, (so that's most of my nights lodging sorted) and my clothing still fits in carry-on. I also have some gifts for friends packed, so coming home will be lighter 😊

My travel life has become vastly more enjoyable since I stopped having any carry on. I will never go back. No worries, no struggles, just a casual experience. One checked bag. Simple. I used to do the carry on only, but it so much better to not be the baggage handler. Your results may vary, but for me it was a game changer. Commuter or trans-Atlantic, all my flights feel very free.

I travel carry on only but I check in my travel bag when I do longer routes like Europe - SE Asia with layover. One checked in baggage is in the price, but a 4-5h layover is much nicer, especially if you have to transfer on some crazy Chinese airport. My tiny 5-6kg bag is checked in, but I have a sling or some other tiny thing with me, with batteries, toothbrush, documents and phone. I wouldn't check in a bag if it was a one leg flight though.

I use a carryon backpack made for airline traveling. A wheeled carryon is easier in the airport, but if you have to walk around a lot before you get to your hotel or hostel, a backpack allows you to be more mobile. Merino wool t-shirts can be worn a few days before needing to be washed, thus fewer t-shirts are required. I pack a very small mini backpack that packs into itself and is only about three inches square and two inches thick. This mini backpack is either empty on the trip there, or with gifts if visiting friends and family, but for the return trip, it’s filled with items I bought on the trip and it becomes my personal bag that goes under the seat in front of me. Also, for those neck pillows that don’t count as an item, you can buy empty ones that you can stuff with clothing. Also, Scotty Vest makes multi pocket vests that can hold extra gear and help prevent you from being picked-pocketed in busy tourist areas.
I have been doing 1 bag travel for a number of years now. (Well I cheat with a sling bag for my personal item in front). It is great. No waiting in lines for bag drop offs and I am usually one of the first out of customs since I dont have to wait for bags. And never any lost luggage and easy to change flights. I am a marino wool fan with a bar of shampoo soap and a sink for laundry. (or just bring it in the shower with me)
Careful, gate agents are starting to require folks to put those slings and fanny packs into their bags. Airlines are squeezing out pennies from customers nowadays.

For the last 3 years I was able to slim down what I pack and work as a digital nomad with just a personal item bag.
Did just carry on for the first time last summer - saved me when the flight was cancelled. However, I can't get down to one bag because of medical issues. So I used a knapsack at my seat + a quality roller carry on bag. I now use a light, easily rolls over any surface, durable, and checkable Briggs & Riley. Smaller planes "sky check" them at the gate so keep valuables in the pack, but it's still considered carry on and is almost always ready by the time you exit the plane. Another tip: if you're staying in nice hotels, they'll do laundry for you. Learned from an experienced traveler that what I thought was expensive and frivolous was actually awesome and surprisingly reasonable when you can't do the laundry in your room (e.g. it won't dry in time, or the bride spilled Aperol Spritz all over your dry-clean-only cocktail dress). I still need to perfect flying just carry on when I need a mix of dressy clothes and casual... future trips!

These were some really great tips! I'm still working out the kinks in how much I pack and what I pack it in. I've found that backpacks and duffle bags just don't work for me any more due to a bad shoulder. So I've switched over to a small wheeled bag that's about the same size as the backpacks were. I can still carry it with my good arm if need be, but I don't have to schlep it around anymore. And for the places I tend to travel, it works perfectly fine.
When traveling, "schlep" is the proper verb to use in regards to all our stuff 😊

1 bag travel is something I'm still fine tuning. It's so much quicker to not deal with check in's.
I know I never have to one bag but I cannot imagine not doing it this way now.
Not dealing with checks doesn't equal 1 bag though. You can ofen pay a little more to bring two bags on to a plane, neither checked in. We all want to avoid Hold Luggage but I find one backpack can be extreme. This is especially true as Airlines are constantly reducing the measurements of luggage. Some airlines the free alotment is extreme.
@@bradavon Personal Item Only can work if you dress like a college student on vacation, stay in hostels, and your only packed footwear is a pair of sandals. I guess you can get away with that in your 20's when you mostly socialize with other bummy travel kids from the hostel. If you want to look like you respect the museums and restaurants and clubs and, most of all the people that you visit you'll need a pair of real shoes and a shirt with buttons, a pair of long pants and perhaps even - horrors - a sports jacket. That can be done Carry-On Only but requires an overhead bag. A little more hassle and risk and expense but well worth it for the richer experience and local acceptance IMO.
I bring my old t-shirts (those with holes or slightly torn), underwear and socks (usually those with holes) with me. Once I'm done with them, I throw them away 😆 and my bag is always lighter on my way home.

I love carryon only but when I need more for a work trip I used to do backpack that fits under the seat and small roller bag that fits in the overhead bin. It seems like lately, airlines are running out of bin space more and more and then I'm forced to gate check, completely defeating the purpose. I don't know if new planes have less overhead space, or people are just putting two bags in the overhead instead of one under the seat but it is pretty annoying

I want to travel 5 weeks next year. Although i wanted to travel with just a back pack , it wont work for me. I have athritis in my spine and recently packed a 40 l bag and found it to heavy. I will take a 20" roller bag suitcase and perhaps a 20-30L backpack that can sit on the suitcase. I have travelled with a mega large suitcase when i was young. I wouldn't recommend it . I think carry on and personal bag is achievable.

6:28 If you don't mind the extra bulk in your pocket, I might interest you in a foldable phone. you get both a tablet and a phone that you can pull out anywhere, and when you calculate the costs of an ipad and iphone together, the fold makes a lot more sense as it's around the same price or cheaper as just buying both.
Traveling is not the same as vacationing. Traveling is sustainable, both energy-wise and financially. Vacations, not so much. The real starting point is changing your approach to living. Be willing to be a bit less clean. Wash your hair less often. Forget dressy clothes. Leave all the soap at home. You don't need to rely on hotels for soap. Go to a store. You don't need to buy "stuff". Refrigerator magnets??? Really? Give some serious thought to your clothing choices. Figure out what will be available at your destination and buy it when you arrive.
These are NOT hacks! just careful planning.

Functionality over style. I went to a cold weather country, and I packed a lot of those fleece types no buttons cardigans, and didnt focus on getting the right jacket or sweater for the weather. I got sick due to the cold, and was miserable.
With shopping just look for a FedX UPS or DLS shipping service and ship your items back home on the same day you fly home to your home or a family or friends house and you might be able to ship something to your hotel too. So if you have a two week vacation ship extra things and just take what you need for three days. And you could just use a credit card no carry on and ship everything back.

I launder in my Matador Freerain 24l stuffable daypack. It's seam-sealed like a drybag with roll top closure. Dual purpose, it keeps contents ultra-dry when used as a day pack. Very compact.

Carry On doesn't always mean Backpack Only though. I've tried Backpack Only to save money but found it just to restrictive for the cost of being able to bring a second bag on to the plane. Hold luggage can be costly but personally I find restricting yourself to just a Backpack is too restrictive. Paying that little extra to bring a second bag on to the plane makes all the difference ot a trip. This is especially true as Airlines are constantly reducing the measurements of luggage. Some airlines the free alotment is extreme.
Back when air travel was civilized you could ALWAYS bring a PI and OH bag included in even the basic tkt price. That's what "carry-on" travel WAS. There were even specialized OH packs with small PI bags that clipped onto them so that you only had one thing to carry once you left the aircraft. Before that, in the 1980's I modified an Eagle Creek pack myself by sewing Fastex buckles onto it so I could clip on my under seat PI soft briefcase style bag.
That hat hack was the best advice ever.
I typically pack the lightest and smallest stowaway duffle bag that I have when traveling. It takes up less space than a t-shirt and it allows me to expand into a checked bag with a carry on for the return trip if I really want to.

Thanks for all the videos! I learn a lot from you guys! My one problem for going carry-on only is the weight of my bag. All my stuff can fit, but sometimes the weight goes over the allotted weight when flying international. What do you guys do?
Cargo pants are your friend. Power banks, chargers and cables are small but dense and fit in certain pants pockets. Don't let'em weigh that water bottle full, water weighs a kilo per liter of course. Once you board you can shift items freely. Make sure you're downsizing your toiletries; you can get by with very few liquid (heavy) toiletries. Also, look closely at the weight of your bag itself. There are light carry-ons and not so light ones of similar size. Tighten down straps as much as possible, a large loose bag is more likely to get weighed than a tight smaller bag especially if you are a small-framed person carrying it. Make sure you WEAR your carry-on when you check in, and stand in such a way as to hide it as much as possible. A small portable luggage scale is invaluable. As a last resort there are the neck pillow, food bag and fishing line tricks.
For me, as an amateur photographer with two cameras and multiple lenses and peripherals, weight is the problem whenever the carrier has a carryon weight limit. In addition to cargo pants with multiple pockets, I wear on the plane a lightweight fleece with many small and large pockets (find these on line). I weigh my bags with a luggage scale before I travel, determine how much I'm over the limit, and then put heavy items like camera batteries, lenses, tablet, and charging brick in my various pockets. Some airlines have ridiculously low carryon weight limits, but for most with limits of between 22 and 26 pounds, this can help get your carryon baggage below the limit. And when flying international I try to stick with a U.S. carrier (Delta, United, American) as they don't seem to have weight limits and none has ever weighed my luggage (although if its codeshare with a foreign carrier, then the foreign carrier's weight limit will apply, so beware).

fanny pack and hollow head pillow count as attire not luggage. Bring cash and don't pack cheap junk just buy it at your destination. Depending on distance dont be afraid to have a friend ship a box of extras to your motel if your staying put for a few days. Polyester is the real secret especially in remote areas.

have you guys considered the flextailgear vacuum pump in combination with vacuum bags? It's the tiniest pump I've seen to date and it packs a punch. Should have an adapter for the vacuum bags which would big a good 1 2 punch

Real hack. Most airlines weight your bag at check in, so pack your technology and heavy stuff in cargo pockets. Plus a jacket on your waist. Or just give it to a friend while you check in.
Great video!!! I always have a small checked bag for flights. I do, however, have a backpack and fanny pack for my carry-on and personal item. I also have a vest of some kind with extra pockets.

Most budget airlines have a weight limit the amount you had in those bag’s you’d be well over and they’d have to go in the hold
The souvenir tip is the best thing, I had to negotiate to carry a small square canvas and ended up holding it for the whole flight. Not fun

I travel a lot for work and need business casual, but I don’t want to have to pack two kinds of shoes. Any recommendations on shoes I can wear with a suit and with shorts?
I like to:
1. Wear slippers while travelling because so many airports required me to remove my shoes. With slippers, I dont even need to use my hands, and I can always change into shoes after reaching my accommodation, or if that country is absurdly cold, I can always change into warmer shoes in the airport after clearing immigration. But so far, I didnt need to do that even in winter.
2. No belt, no chances of me getting stopped over a buckle.
3. Only carry my phone in my pocket, everything else in the bag. I can always pay for stuff with Samsung Pay, or take out my headphones and neck pillow on the plane.

My absolute biggest obstacle to one bag travel is not having a pocket knife. I always carry a pocket knife with me, actually 2 I have a Swiss army knife and then a folding lockable blade pocket knife. For travel I would be perfectly fine with just traveling with my Swiss army knife, but the concept of doing so without one is a big area of contention for me.
Why do you need a knife while traveling?
@mattsheets I carry and use my knife every day. Thousands of uses. And if I'm far from home I'd need a pocket knife even more because wouldn't have one otherwise.

@mattsheets same exact things I can use it for every other day, opening packages, cutting cordage, uses in the outdoors are plentiful, safety (cutting things like seatbelts), first aid, knives are an extremely multi use item that can also literally save lives in an emergency situation. And to nip that subject in the bud immediately, if you travel or even go day to day unprepared for a typical emergency situation than you are putting yourself and loved ones in unnecessary risk, things happen, all the time, and thinking they haven't or won't happen to you is naive at best. A knife is a "multi-tool" all by itself. I carry a knife every day and use it almost every day. For all sorts of things. And when I travel I also like to spend a lot of time in the outdoors (the main reason I travel) and I will never venture into the wilderness without a knife, period.
I am with you. I have used a pocket knife innumerable times while traveling and carry on only travel is problematic.

I definitely need to downsize my laptop. I lugged a Dell XPS 15 around for a year, along with its big 130 watt charger. A 13.3-14" laptop with a charger I can share with my phone would make a big difference.
I did it and it's such a game changer if you travel often! Really worth it in my opinion, even if the screen is smaller it makes traveling a lot easier 👍

LOL Me when i vacation in resorts, i bring everything, kitchen sink included. You never know what you get, they sell you paradise, but it’s usually less than what you have at home. It’s a five star for very poor people. Just try to buy bug spray, a piece of rope or a bathtub plug duct tape, glue, in a third world country, you won’t find it unless you drive across the country. Not bad if you only leave for a few days, but leave for two to four weeks you are screwed.
Subpacking in cubes is delulu.
The BEST hack came at the end of this video. Experience. Just go for it. If you need the internet to know you shouldn't bring a razor that won't work, or linen shorts to wear while you are training you're probably not going to make it out the front door anyway.

I find all these “one” bag hacks interesting but don’t account for the need for a blazer and tie. While that may not be a regular thing, there are still many reasons why one would need to bring them.
