@@warmecanic Mario Kart is like 30 bucks now dude and you wrote this 3 years ago. I had road rash 3d for ps1 and i can confidently say that 64 was absolutely better than 3d. My favorite road rash is ether rr64 or rr2 on genesis. Both are absolute must haves in my opinion
I loved this installment of Road Rash. I've probably logged over 20o hours with my older brother, playing all the game modes, using codes, to me it had a lot of replay value. The races never were the same, and you'll always have a different out come. The ridiculous crashes, and combat were my favorite part of this game. Lots of laughs came from this one
I was always a fan of the series. Mostly on sega. It was just a time period where I could play a bad game and really have no idea how bad it really was because of the lack of internet reviews lol.
i miss those days - getting a random game you've seen or heard little about and just giving it a go. mostly it would suck but you'd find the odd gem that way
@@jamieisjabba yep, it'll never be quite the same as the n64 and ps1 days. me and my friends played the hell out of goldeneye on n64 and tekken 3 on ps1.
I never had this game as a child but received it two Christmas ago. It was one of the few n64 games I hadn't heard so much as a whisper about, so I excitedly fired it up Christmas morning. I loved it! I didn't expect too much from the graphics since I was more impressed by the frame rate and number of racers at once. Yes at first the handling is hard but once you progress through 1 player, it becomes easier to handle out of experience and also from the upgrades every level. One of my favorite features was how you could align w certain gangs for protection in races on single player
I bought this the second I knew it existed a few weeks back, had no idea ANY motorcycle games like this existed on the N64. It's also the first game I've ever genuinely enjoyed playing with my 13yr-old brother. Worth it!
This game is a blast!! if you own an N64 + 3 friends + controls I highly recommend this one, pretty nice gameplay and a huge huge replay value. Excellent review of one of my favorites games in multiplayer in my lovely N64 :D!!
Review severely underplays just how much of a killer multiplayer title this is. It's right up there with Goldeneye, Mario Kart, Smash and No Mercy in my opinion
This is one of my favorite games on the N64. I like the ability to jam your weapon into your opponent's front wheel; causing them to fly forward off their bike. It's hilarious! I play this game from time to time on an emulator in HD with a higher frame rate. It stays at 60 fps most of the time. Maybe I'll play this with my kids tomorrow.
3DO era Road Rash is my all time fave, followed by Road Rash II & I. However, the inability to play Soundgarden, Therapy?, Monster Magnet et al, during gameplay sucked - as the in-game 'music' was truly high level tragedy. I really hoped this would be rectified in the ps1/Saturn ports but... no. Still... amazing game overall.
These are the best fights in the Road Rash series. Instead of having one or two other racers on screen at a time this game usually has all of the racers very close to each other in a pack. It is common to see the last driver finish the race less than a second slower than the winner. Other interesting thing to notice is that the game is actually a open world in that during races you can take wrong turns leading to other roads from other races or go over the green hills around the courses and explore a lot of open space until you find cities, farms or other roads, without stoping to load. Probably a big reason for the graphics being so sparse and muddy.
I've had so many laughs playing this game as a kid. I use to love shoving my weapons into their wheels and make them go flying forward. Doing this on superbikes was also hilarious.
buddy the crashes in this version alone make it better then the rest, i used to crash into shit for fun because it was so goddam awesome, and as for handling i don't know what the issue was with u, i had no problems up until the insanity level, which i might add was also goddam rediculous and fun. and as for level design the world was actually believable i think, and i personally knew where i was around San Fransisco at all times, from the beaches, to wine country to china town no issues whatsoever with anything in this game, i still play it for hours on end.
my issue with the controls is down to the speed of the game, its either plodding along slowly or going way to fast for anyone to be able to handle solidly, i think it needed a bit more time baking in the controls department as like you said it has crashes.....but far too many of them to make it an enjoyable racer. it was a slightly new direction for the RR series but the originals hold up a lot better IMO
I picked this game up at a thrift shop years after it was long forgotten and really enjoyed it. I really wish I knew about it when I was younger and it was still a new title. My biggest gripe is the later courses become very aggravating at how unrealistic the obstacles are placed everywhere. Even if one pixel contacts something it sends you flying across the map and you never catch back up to the race afterwards. The soundtrack is the real winner in this game and I can see why the people that did get this title new liked it so much. I had a lot of fun with it and imagine anybody new to it will enjoy it as well.
Had this game add a kid, and loved it. Still one I need to pick up as an adult. Wish never sold off all my 64 games to get money to put towards a ps2. But at the time ended up with a ps2, and devil my cry I was happy.
I love that level where you go through the sewer pipes with the big pit in the middle. It was basically a deathmatch, I remember winning with everyone else wrecked and my bike at like 1 HP. 😂😂
It is my favorite, the review seems to focus on this as a racing game when it was obviously designed as a brawler (money for combat, NPC rubber banding taken to the extreme.) Also not mentioned were the courses being laid out on an open world map with persistent weapons and power-ups to collect, you could sacrifice race progress purposefully to collect a bunch of boards to spoke opponents (especially cops) just for fun and spite.
I just ordered this game. Used to play it all of the time when I was younger. This is the Road Rash I spent most time with, however, I was most moved by the one I played on Genesis. Probably gotta say this is my favorite all time with Road Redemption coming in 2nd.
@@n64glennplant I really liked it, however, now that I’m no longer starved for a road rash game I probably won’t go back. I will be sinking time into RR64, and probably Road Rash(PS1) once I acquire it. I’d recommend listening to the interview from the game creator of Road Redemption. I found it fascinating.
Road Rash 64 game was awesome A grade rank by THQ this was the legend bikers racing and flip crashing and hit everyone else including cop's. I also enjoy the different driver's in the game itself and motor bikes as well. Wish THQ Nordic should do a remastered or remake of Road Rash 64 game for all consoles
Best part of the game is you can wheelie to ramp up cars that are driving both towards you and in your lane. This can lead to controllable front flips, back flips, tricks like Rush 2049
This game was great with friends. My favourite part when I was younger were some of the consolation prizes you got for losing. I remember we thought getting a pet rock as a prize was hilarious back then.
love the review! i have played this game for hours. the sound track is its strongest point but the multi player also gives this game a great reason purchase. i love the deathmatch mode in multi player. also i've put countless hours into playing road rash for the sega genesis. but all in all this version is probably my favorite.
@@n64glennplant I really tried to like Road Redemption but it was missing that road rash charm. But it was in beta when I tried it last, so maybe I should give it another shot. I dream of a new official Road Rash game though.
Man, I loved Road Rash 64. Me and my brother would play multiplayer thrashes. You are right about the later bikes being uncontrollable and annoying. We always played on the lower levels because it was much more enjoyable. The music was awesome. I like this version compared to the Playstation version for the smoothed out texturing. It helped me focus better, though it may have looked bad.
i think if you have 2 people that know the game well to race it'll be fun for sure but the tracks really need to be memorised as they are so similar :D
this game is so much fun. Its still a fun game to play and is totally hilarious. I feel like this is the best of the road rash games. I really wish they made sequel to this for modern consoles. its a lot of fun bashing people. I also love the driving mechanics and how you can drift around corners. i guess i'm also really biased towards fun multiplayer games because i almost always gamed with atleast 1 other person so i always thought multiplayer games were tons of fun.
Racing on the super bikes in multiplayer, and shoving your weapon in their spokes, then watching them reach escape velocity as they launch off into the distance.
I think road rash2 for ps2 was the best cuz you could play with a friend on same screen with side car on the bike. Which made for joyful nights of carnage!
@@n64glennplant After your review I looked up others and was surprised to see a lot of hate towards this game in general. Growing up, all my friends and I loved this and spent hours laughing cause of it.
Countless hours of rofling while playing this game was my experience. Kinda wish they would make a new one. Sega , playstation one and this one were awesome games.
This game is a huge classic for the system. One of the best games for the N64. also you said some things that ren't really true. You can't buy weapons with the money earned. You pick them up on the track. or by stealing it from your opponents. In my opinion it IS a Must have purchase.
It averages scores of 8.2/10 so I wouldn't say it's a must own for every n64 owner but it's a fun game nevertheless and for racing game fans it's a solid buy. I'd still go for a different road rash game as the best in the road rash series though. I'm sure the same team also made a spiritual sequel.
maybe I'm just an old git and still remember when the series was in its prime and so fresh. this isn't a bad game i just much prefer the earlier versions in the series
I still pour Hours into this game! Once u master the turns, the handbrake/turning its highly entertaining. I can literally take every racer out now as ive been playing for yeaaaaars
Playing it again recently, my biggest complaint is the rubber banding. I miss the Mega Drive set up, where I could get a huge lead on the opponents. One of the neat things about this game is how the whole gameworld is available in each race. One of my favorite things to do is to say "screw the race" and go exploring. Sadly, no cars or anything else loads, so it's quite desolate, but this exciting back when the game came out. I'd spends hours exploring. That said, this game may be a pretty good N64 game, but it can't hold a candle to the Mega Drive classics, or the 3DO version.
This. Game. Was. SO. Fucking. Hilarious!!! If you jump or hit the cows they moo in response 😂😂😂 we would laugh so hard at things in this game as kids we would get headaches... Oh man...
I love this game. In my opinion Beetle Adventure Racing and this game are the top 2 racers on the N64. I like tasers and pepper spray as my favorite weapons. See the people shake and just kick them into on coming traffic or into signs or other debris on the side of the road.
I was pretty disappointed with this version compared to others especially the PlayStation versions, I am sure it could have been so much better. Still AWESOME REVIEW !
Dude my best friend n me spent so many hours playing this game. Honestly if I could get a N64 again this would me one of the games I want right next to Conquer's Bad Fur Day, 007 Golden Eye and Cruis'n
wow i was expecting this game to be better. I cant remember where i saw this but the game looked real good and this one seemed to be the best version. now ill definately try to pick it up for cheap next time i go somewhere
its worth a play but the graphics are so bland and uninspiring, i know graphics are not everything of course but they are so dull every course looks and feels just the same as the next
I really like this version. The graphics were never the strong point on any of them, and the frame rate and sound effects are the best in the series, in my opinion. I really wish they'd bring this series back, on current gen consoles!
yeah I'm really not keen on the graphics in this one, i was going to do a more in depth review but tbh i found it quite a boring game to play and visually it doesn't make for the most interesting game to cover!
I love Road Rash! However, I never played this because of the reviews it got so I avoided it. Looks like I haven't missed much from what I've seen here. As for my favorite Road Rash, it's hard to choose...but I think I'll go with the Playstation version, which basically was a port of the 3DO game and was also ported to other consoles as well. I would love to see EA bring this series back!
This game is all about the multiplayer. The graphics aren't great and all the tracks feel the same, but nothing can match the thrill of the "TINK!" as you jam the wheelspoke of one of your buddies.
I'm finding it really hard to decide if I want to keep this game or not. I have great memories with this game from my childhood, and I love the concept. It's still moderately fun it short bursts, but I now realize how unfair the AI is and how horrible the handling and courses are, especially on later stages. I don't ever play multiplayer, so left with only the single player, it just doesn't provide the fun gameplay that it once did. Any advice?
This game is really fun, although the original Sega versions are better. The weapons are the best part of the game, with a good variety. Bad parts of this game are the races are too short, compared to the old ones, and only 2 kinds of bikes, although each new one is slightly different. Give this game a try though, it's worth it. This game rules. Simple as that.
Didnt even know it existed, only played it on megadrive and pc, visuals with sprites on the pc was the best version think it had a great soundtrack as well... Waiting for the new one to release =)
seems to be one of those games where you can overlook the graphics in favour of the fun factor...I love how many racers are on screen at any one time, im guesing theres some kind of rubber banding? Gives the feel of being in a biker gang, except one where your beat the crap out of each other...
Great review mate and once again how did I not even know about this? May not be as strong as other versions but I think I may be sold! One thing I would like to say, why does everyone look like a wrestler? lol
I've never been soo frustrated at a game, yet 10 seconds later laughing soo hard it hurt cause the entire track of racers turned and met a semi head on and all I see is them turning, then seconds later their bikes flying across the screen in the other direction then a semi passing by.
Im kinda surprised you didn't say anything about the physics, how you are sent flying, and how some crashes will make you do insane flips and the thrill of landing successfully when you thought you were a goner, haha. Thats my favorite part of this game!
HitmonleeDeluxe I personally love the wicked multi bike crashes when like a ton of racers crash at once.
The audio of the people getting hit in the background is hilarious!

Racing on the super bikes in multiplayer, and shoving your weapon in their spokes, then watching them reach escape velocity as they launch off into the distance.
I think road rash2 for ps2 was the best cuz you could play with a friend on same screen with side car on the bike. Which made for joyful nights of carnage!
yeah thats super fun
I can't believe you said this isn't a must-own; you're crazy!
Just the crystal meth talking
I'm sure the same team also made a spiritual sequel.
liked this game, but mostly just playing single races and playing with the options... loved the crazy air you could get in crashes!
yeah i think thats the most fun, just use the unlock cheat and use the powerful bikes on the earlier tracks for some insane speed
Gleen this game is so much fun I spent houes playing road rash 64
maybe I'm just an old git and still remember when the series was in its prime and so fresh. this isn't a bad game i just much prefer the earlier versions in the series
Not touching on the 4x kicks that send the other racers absolutely flying nor talking about the cheatcode for riding mopeds should be illegal!
This game was too funny
This. Game. Was. SO.
Thank you. Like many games it has it's strengths and weaknesses but overall it's not aged all that well
Road Rash on PS1 was awesome
Yeah, 3do back in the day was my fav in the series
I don't know why people down vote this game. This is my favorite road rash game of all time. Also great review Glenn! ☺️👍
It’s a series where I think everyone has their own fav, for many it’ll be this but for others perhaps the genesis or 3do RR
Yeah seems legit!
I love the review!!My favorite road rash game is 2 but I have not played a road rash game I didn't like, wish EA would make this game again!!!
There was a kick starter by the origional team that got funded but it's under a different name due to copyright x
Dude my best friend n me spent so many hours playing this game. Honestly if I could get a N64 again this would me one of the games I want right next to Conquer's Bad Fur Day, 007 Golden Eye and Cruis'n
Great titles - nothing stops you doing just that!
I played Road Rash: Jailbreak with my cousin on the PS1 years ago.
I think my bro used to like that
Great review as always. you were right though, the 3DO version is where it peaked. I wonder what happened to the remake they were supposed to make.
They kick started it and I'm pretty sure they hit their goal
wow i was expecting this game to be better. I cant remember where i saw this but the game looked real good and this one seemed to be the best version. now ill definately try to pick it up for cheap next time i go somewhere
its worth a play but the graphics are so bland and uninspiring, i know graphics are not everything of course but they are so dull every course looks and feels just the same as the next
the game was never ment to be realistic good old arcade racing game with bikes and weapons. Plus ramping off cars by doing whilles
This is my all time favorite game
quase começei a chora aqui, me lembrei dos meus tempos de criança...
I really like this version. The graphics were never the strong point on any of them, and the frame rate and sound effects are the best in the series, in my opinion. I really wish they'd bring this series back, on current gen consoles!
the original dev team are apparently working on a new one under a different name due to rights, they did a kickstarter style thing i believe
besides zelda this is the second best game on n64
I loved this game. I would play it with my brother and cousins. But we were small so maybe it isn't as great as I remember it.
Being young can be a blessing and a curse for playing games! Nostalgia plays such a big part
I loved this game
Very fun
1:20 left jab was insane
YoungGemma He was jabbing like a prime Ali lmao
bloody hell Glenn your firing these out!! I have this in the "draw" I just played the PS1 version and must admit the GFX are waay better:(
yeah I'm really not keen on the graphics in this one, i was going to do a more in depth review but tbh i found it quite a boring game to play and visually it doesn't make for the most interesting game to cover!
I would love to see EA bring this series back!
i believe there was a kickstarter earlier on in the year where the original devs were making a new version under a different name
Oh! Yeah, I saw that video. Sounds promising.
This game is all about the multiplayer. The graphics aren't great and all the tracks feel the same, but nothing can match the thrill of the "TINK!" as you jam the wheelspoke of one of your buddies.
this was the first road rash I played and holy hell did I ever play the shit out of it.
I loved this game. it was so much fun to just to crash into everything.
Any advice?
Weird that the 3DO version still looks way better then this but I still kinda liked this version as well. Great review.
yeah the 3do version blew my mind when i had it on launch, looked superb
I know you've probably answered this before but what do you use to make your videos?
I understand completly glenn I still prefer the old road rash but road rash 64 was still good for what it was
This game is really fun, although the original Sega versions are better. The weapons are the best part of the game, with a good variety. Bad parts of this game are the races are too short, compared to the old ones, and only 2 kinds of bikes, although each new one is slightly different. Give this game a try though, it's worth it. This game rules. Simple as that.
We played it on PS1... Had a big laugh!
I'm looking forward to the new kickstarted one :) it'll be interesting to see how it plays
Didnt even know it existed, only played it on megadrive and pc, visuals with sprites on the pc was the best version think it had a great soundtrack as well... Waiting for the new one to release =)
I didn’t know there was a new one I only heard about that road avenger or whatever it’s called which just got mixed reviews
seems to be one of those games where you can overlook the graphics in favour of the fun factor...I love how many racers are on screen at any one time, im guesing theres some kind of rubber banding? Gives the feel of being in a biker gang, except one where your beat the crap out of each other...
The thing that bugged me about this game is the rubber banding AI. You just can't get ahead no matter how well you race.
9/10
It seems way slower than the PS1 game - which I love.
Haha i have good memories on this game. Hitting people from their bike was so much fun.
We so need a new road rash on next gen consoles
Great review mate and once again how did I not even know about this? May not be as strong as other versions but I think I may be sold! One thing I would like to say, why does everyone look like a wrestler? lol
Mario Kart + Grand Theft Auto.
And its all for only $15. Considering the flaws you mentioned in this game, this might be a pretty good deal.
15 would be a fair price you'd defo get enjoyment out of it at that price
I've never been soo frustrated at a game, yet 10 seconds later laughing soo hard it hurt cause the entire track of racers turned and met a semi head on and all I see is them turning, then seconds later their bikes flying across the screen in the other direction then a semi passing by.
