I had a friend go to a Sugar Ray concert not knowing about their old sound, aka, Lemonade and Brownies era. She became a fan when they switched to soccer mom music and she confirmed that they did play Mean Machine. I can only imagine the confusion and chaos as they played half their old songs and new.
Ken Williams With the exception of FLY, thier second album was pretty hardcore too. I saw them in 99 on the 14:59 tour when they changed their sound. They played Mean Machine and the place started moshing. I remember there were some older moms down on the floor where I was and they started panicking. It was rather hilarious! Lol I had no idea Mean Machine was in on this games soundtrack. That's great!
Thank you! I love this game and I'm sick of people shitting all over it. I absolutely love the entire series and for me this only falls behind the PC game. It was based on the 3DO version, but allowed for use of proper analog joysticks. There's nothing quite like leaning a motorcycle by leaning a flightstick. It just feels right. And the sense of speed later in the game is insane. Barely controlled chaos. Anyway, RR64 is easily my second favorite. Like you said, there's nothing quite like wading into a pack of motorcyclists and wrecking house. The AI was specifically designed to cause packs like that to happen, and it really makes the game fun. If you haven't tried it, you should check out Road Redemption on Steam. It's a spiritual successor to the Road Rash series, but adds a lot more features. It really nails that wading into a pack and crushing skulls feel that RR64 had. It has quite a bit more focus on the combat.
Nice to see a UA-cam retro gamer who isn't afraid of emulation. Most others seem to be purists who hate emulators for some reason. Emulation is pretty much all I do!
They don't want to seem like they are downloading stolen games.. Companies look at your channel harder if you say you are always using an emulator.. Why you think 🤔 when AVGN talk about a game he shows the actual physical game and console/PC? So companies want question his ethics.. Me personally I use emulators sometimes because my old system died and I still OWN the games to my old system..
Emulation is a necessary "evil". Especially with how absurdly expensive some retro games currently are! If you love playing games on the original hardware, more power to you! But do understand that you need to sell a spare kidney to afford some of the rarer games!
From a preservation standpoint, emulation becomes more necessary as time goes on. Sure it's possible to get a working NES or Atari today, but they die all the time and eventually will all be gone. The only way to play culturally significant early video games in a hundred or a thousand years will be emulation. Presuming human civilization lasts that long anyway.
FINALLY I come across someone who appreciates this great game! Nobody ever talks about it, but I played this with my friends more than Mario Kart 64. I’d say it was behind only Goldeneye 007, Perfect Dark, WCW Revenge and WWF No Mercy for best multiplayer game.
Unlock Scooters and just use kicking aiming upwards! If you do it right you'll send people flying, it's hilarious! XD Also, if you go 2 players only with no opponents and make a sharp turn, you can freeze the distance meter and explore the island freely. Just be careful not to fall or you'll both be teleported back. Still playing it with my brother! It's a hidden gem in the N64 library!
Just bought up this video to show my now 12 yr old son my favourite n64 title from when I was a kid. If they could make a new version with the same basic physics as the n64 version I'd be stoked
Funny thing for me is, I have loved Road Rash since playing the three releases for Genesis, but at the time in my mid twenties when RR64 came out, most of my core peer groups really didn't play video games, so I enjoyed RR64 on my kids' system and we laughed for hours on end playing every mode available. It is still my favorite version of the game and CIV's Livin' Life is one of my most frequent plays on my Spotify play list.
How this game hasn't been turned into a movie yet, I'll never understand. Even Uwe Boll hasn't attempted it. Considering the success of Sons of Anarchy and the Fast and Furious franchise, I felt this title would make for an easier adaptation than something like DOOM, again.
@SnesDrunk - if you haven't played it, give San Francisco Rush (the original N64 game) a try - that game is fucking hilarious, your car blows up from the mildest wrecks or if you flip over onto the roof its an instant explosion. Me and my brother would play that split screen and be dying haha. It's also got loads of secret paths and hidden collectibles to unlock a hidden map even.
Friend and I have fond memories of Rush 2 for that same reason. Car flips 20 times, lands on all four tires... then suddenly flips over and immediately explodes.
Great video, you really put a more positive spin on this title than i'd seen and made it seem quite a bit more interesting than i'd been lead to believe. Something about your vocabulary and delivery in this video reminded me quite a bit of James Rolfe when he talks about monsters movies too.
I fucking love the n64 controller, i just hate it when games make you use the dpad instead of the joystick, that was just stupid. Or even worse, like doom 64, using the c buttons to move, that was just a shame, i never played doom until i got older on the pc bc of that.
a very very decent reimagining of this is called Road Redemption on all major platforms, really cool and like this but much deeper as well as randomized
I feel you on this a bit. My favorite one is the Jailbreak on PSX :) It is less popular entry critically, but I love it no matter what. Music, character design, sounds, physics - everything speaks volumes to me. Even though it wasn't my first Road Rash. I had Genesis before PSX and I played shit ton of original one and 3rd one. They also have sentimental value for me, but Jailbreak is still the best in my opinion. Actually, looking at N64 version I would say it comes pretty close to Jailbreak. Which might look like an improvement over this one. Which is pretty great I must say. Also heard a lot of good review about Road Redemption. Should probably pick it up sometime in the future.
Road Redemption was a fantastic send up to Road Rash style gameplay, but honestly it played way to fast for its own good and seeing this video makes me realize they should have capped the game to be a bit more like this instead.
I love every single thing about retro 5th gen gaming and early 3D games , the blur , the volumetric fog , the blocky prototype characters , the use of FMV and CG , the minimal to zero speech only used to slightly compliment the game but not Impose on your Imagination , and I love the way videogame soundtracks used to be made which Is hard for me to describe all I can say Is they were less "hollywood" and more catchy and dynamic ( when using original soundtracks ). Nothing beats 5th and 6th gen for me , It was such a period of experimental Innovation , and revolutionary games coming left and right , just pure unadulterated design and the tech was just enough In a sweet spot for me , even Arcades were at their peak imo. How did you feel about Top gear 64?
I still play this game to this day. Drop the game music volume down to 0 and crank up the volume of your music player with some Motorhead but just to the point where you can stilll hear the punching and engine sound effects.
I'm a huge fan of the Sega Genesis Road Rash series (especially 2 and 3), but sadly, I missed out on this one. I got the N64 really late in its lifetime, and by then I was only really playing Ocarina of Time, Goldeneye, and Gauntlet Legends (the latter two mostly for multiplayer). Seeing this review, I may have to see if I can find a ROM for it. Not really a big fan of the N64 controller layout either (making it difficult to replay games like Goldeneye even on an emulator), but maybe I can figure out a controller configuration that works for me. Thanks for the video on this one, SNES Drunk!
Simplicity and carnage. Sounds like we'd be great friends! 2:12 - I laughed straight out. I completely agree with this review. It's one of my favorite N64 games as well. And then the secret super bikes you unlock once you complete the game, the bikes that go in like 300 m/ph are freakin' hilarious. There's a great GMV on UA-cam using the Andrew WK song "I get Wet" with Road Rash 64 crashes. It's amazing. And also, the whole Island is always loaded in Road Rash 64, but only the path you have selected are trafficked. In other words, you can turn 180 and just cruise around the island if you want a soft Sunday, that's pretty sweet!
@@robertcatania1120 I have copy of RR for PS1 on proud display next to my wound garden CD and pic of me on motorcycle video game at Discovery Zone in the 90’s as a child!

*FINALLY.* Someone tell it like it is. This game was fun to play years ago and it still is. One of the first games to teach me that graphics aren't everything as long as everything else is great (which it WAS). And most of all, the voice clips were so damn funny; they must've had a field day recording them.
My friends and I used to play this game constantly. The best part in multi-player was when someone would get 4X and their kick could literally knock you a town over. Maximum glory when someone would risk it all against a player with 4X and pull off a spoke-poke before the finish.
Level 4 the beat down level is my favorite...6 racers and a carnage of cops everywhere..i loved it...racin to tha end to see how many of the cpus got wrecked or busted...there were times where i was tha only racer left that was caught or wrecked...great times

This game is amazing, my best friend and i found all the secrets and the super bikes are insane!! There's this weird bug where if you stop in the middle of a pedestrian's path and let them hit you, they'll fall over and from then on, all pedestrians are invincible and merely *appear to fall over* but stand right back up, even after hitting them at full speed. you can then smack them over and over for endless grunt sounds, it's amazing XD
definitely gonna pick this up. I love Road Rash (the 3DO/PS1 version), I had it on a demo cd for the 3DO back when demos kicked ass. I would not get back on the bike and just walk around for hours.
Great review! I forgot this game existed and i loved the N64. Check out Mystical Ninja: Starring Goemon. It's IMO the most underrated game ever made for any system.
Why wouldn't it be, it's the best road rash game ever with the best gameplay in physics around, it's hilarious and I wish road redemption had physics like this!!
This looks like a really awesome, low-budget 3D Android game, lol. The digitized graphics look of the Genesis version has more charm to me but this N64 version looks loads of fun to play.
The physics in this game made it so much fun, as well as hilarious. The shitty graphics added to the hilarity. Definitely the best party game to play with all of your friends of the late 90s/early 2000s for sure.
So, I am one of those big-time supporters of the 3DO version, but admittedly I don't recall ever playing the 64 version. I will definitely have to track this one down and give it a try.
Remember, when you beat the game, you unlock the ridiculously fast Superbike that is so fast. It literally flies and is impossible to control. Also, there was nothing better than sticking the pool cue in your enemies' spokes making them cartwheel to death
THis is one that people either love or hate. Hell, we are a 2 man band, 1 of us hated this, one of us liked it. It is definitely a way more fun game than people give it credit for

No! And I owned the console 2 time.. Once a kid and once as an adult.. The GameCube controller is the best to me! Now that's a controller man..
The only thing that road rash games needed to do but didn’t. Was have a create a character mode.. that would’ve kicked ass.
Then you could create the rest of the NWO
I'm giggling as I watch this. This looks great :D
Hope we get more N64 reviews in the future.
