Everyone knows that Supergirl is one of the only remaining Kryptonians, but rarely does a story focus on the horrors that come with survival. What does it mean to carry the weight of your entire world, and how does that affect your ability to live in a new one? Kara Zor-El's journey through the New 52 brought her so much anguish that there was only one place she could possibly find piece of mind: the Red Lantern Corps, home to those who have nothing left but their rage.

Kara and Kals differences can also be viewed as a family whos split between those who have immigrated to a new place and grew up there and those who stayed behind and cherish the homeland because they actually lived there.

I can't say I've read many Supergirl stories, but Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow by Tom King is not only one of my favorite comics, but one of my favorite stories period. It's an eight issue limited series set in continuity during the Infinite Frontier initiative and follows Kara as she helps a young girl track down her father's killer across the galaxy. This book also touchs on the trauma that Kara experienced as a result of Krypton's destruction and, like most Tom King books, is an excellent character study. If you enjoy Supergirl even a littl bit, I can't reccomend this book enough. Though you may want to brush up on your Comet the Super-Horse history before you read it. I'm not joking.

King is surprisingly good at writing Superman and Supergirl stories. Better than all of his Batman run.

That was one of my favourite New52 books. I assume it wasn't well received since it got a new writer shortly after the Red Lantern run. Maybe it was too different from old Supergirl books but it was the only Supergirl I've read from start to end. I also loved the boots and cape from that run. The swimsuit body with long arms was weird but it's easily her best costume to date.

Ya of course Kara became a red lantern. Like goddamn, trauma conga line anyone?
But fuck man red daughter of krypton was a great story, along with red lanterns. Such a shame it ended

Originally, when she was introduced, they didn't seem to know what to do with Supergirl. They didn't really wind her into the superhero community that Superman was a part of but she wasn't hunted or abused or attacked. She wasn't even that well known. What changed that was when she was added to the Legion of Superheroes along with a teen-aged Clark Kent (Superman as a teenager, subsequently changed in continuity). She worked as one of the big guns of the Legion, even more than Superboy in some cases and Monel (and Ultra Boy really). Fighting cosmic threats, she really became the confident, capable superhero that they didn't seem to be able to make her in the 20th century. And then they killed her in the Crisis (of Infinite Earths). They tried half measures of bringing back the character till they brought her back for real but they couldn't resist making it hard on her (though compared to what you described in this video, it was a walk in the park). But she never really came back after that first Crisis as a stable, developed character. It's quite sad really because THAT is the Supergirl I'd like to see again. Check out the Legion comics just before the 5 year gap before they rebooted it about a million times. Those were the epic days of the legion and Supergirl.

Kara's continuity has been a mess tbh. She bounced around in Superman comics for a decade, had a shallow series in the 70s, and had a decent series in the 80s -- right before being killed off in Crisis.
The take of her being frustrated at the trauma of firsthand experiencing the death of Krypton and struggling to adapt to the new alien world that is Earth - I believe this mainly started when she was reintroduced to DC continuity in 2004. And nowhere is it more perfectly symbolized than with her Red Lantern arc - thank you for covering this. The Emotional Spectrum really does offer a perfect playground for writers to do emotional character arcs.
Some interesting pre-N52 stories were the Bizarrogirl one and her part in the New Krypton arc. It's great listening Sterling Gates discussing his time on the title.
Post-New52, Woman of Tomorrow was simply fantastic. We see she still carries the trauma from the death of Krypton, but has been able to grow past it and be a kind good-hearted hero, an inspirational role model for Ruthye, the young girl she travels with in this adventure.
Future State Superwoman touches on similar themes, portraying a much older Kara. Though I must recommend Woman of Tomorrow first and foremost.
The Matrix and Linda Danvers stuff is a completely different character. Peter David's run on Linda Danvers Supergirl is incredible , and culminates in Many Happy Returns, which imo is the quintessential Supergirl story - but a large portion of its weight is steeped in already knowing Supergirl continuity lore and already being a fan of the Linda Danvers character's journey.
Supergirl: Being Super is a really fun read, though it's noncanon. It's a different Kara origin story without the trauma.

One more thing to mention even though normally when a red lantern is first made they have no comtrol kara is so strong she had a small amount of control even in that state. Mostly who and where to punch but even that is amazing to overcome.

If you want a origin run, Supergirl News52 is a modern start for the character, you can see/read the process of how Kara deals with post traumatic stress after krypton destruction and at the end a Kara finally "accepting" her new life and starting to became the Supergirl personality we see on animated movies.
