I'd love it if you did film a vlog with the 13, but specifically the 13 Mini. Let's see the sort-of definitive "it's not the camera, it's the photographer" example to encourage people that "settled" for the Mini what they can do with the things that actually matter: cinematography, editing, and the actual content.

Same. I’m interested in doing “serious” photography and cinematography, but I’m just a student with no budget. I’m also saving money for a new phone because I need an upgrade and the 13 Mini is inside my budget. If I can use this phone as a “serious” camera while I save enough for a professional one, it’d be great. I’m looking foward to those kind of videos.
I'm not a professional, but I'd think when Apple strips so much of the manual settings from the art of photography, the craft would shift towards an emphasis on shot selection, lighting, editing...no?

If you’re ever back to using the max, a tiny drag down motion on the bottom of your screen brings the top half of the interface down to thumb reach distance. Opposite motion takes the interface full screen again 👍

Cinematic Mode is the game-changer this year for mobile videography. It is the first iteration of machine learning that bridges the gap between amateur videos to *potential* movies being filmed... FROM A PHONE. It's not perfect and still needs work but it's definitely a MASSIVE step in the right direction! 💪🏻

I think the iPhone also goes with a certain "look" when it makes photo. a lot of smartphone producer care about a great lense but apple thinks of the whole big picture.
the video mode is definitely a bummer I have not on my 12 pro max but I did not feel that this mode justifies that sudden upgrade ( which then would be twice this year.)
+ the mini does not have the RAW feature which is a loss.
now they just need to make final cut pro for iPad and we can call it a day and go all iPad.

Amazing video as always. Question, why don’t you use the 6.1” 13 Pro? A good compromise between the Mini and Max but this year you get the benefit of the better cameras of the Max without the size disadvantage. Also, would love the vlog video shot with the 13.

Ditched my 12 Pro Max for the 13 mini and have had it since Friday. Couldn’t be more thrilled.
The hood on the macro lens bit made me laugh. I’ve taken mine on and off my Sigma 105 so many times and I still find myself doing the exact same thing you did. That thing just won’t go on there

9:51 your observation about the iPhone 13 lowering the "barrier for entry" into the world of filmmaking is half right. Cell phone cameras, the internet, and UA-cam have lowered many barriers for artists...but that already happened way back in 2010. By then we had cheap digital cameras that were good enough to make good movies. We also had marketing and distribution because it was clear how powerful UA-cam and the internet was. By 2015 we had iPhones that could make great movies. The iPhone 13 is overkill for most filmmakers. What we really need is more Peter McKinnon's, not more cameras. Peter McKinnon has the ability to take action and actually make a movie. Most wannabe filmmakers won't benefit from the iPhone 13, or UA-cam, or the internet because they simply can't start, and keep going. The key to success on UA-cam is Peter McKinnon, not his cameras.

You missed his point completely. You can now get almost cinema level quality using a smartphone for your video production. iPhone has definitely lowered the bar and continues to do so. Most cannot afford a crew or the equipment to get that high level production value. YT as a platform has really changed the game, we have seen over the years how production/content quality has evolved thanks to smartphones, modes and AI.

7:00 It's interesting how many UA-camrs have said the Mini is their daily driver and they love it yet sales are poor and Apple is getting rid of it next year.
Probably because the average user doesn't watch tech videos and wants regular or big phones. Remember they are probably fully immersed scrolling and watching videos all day XD Whereas content creators aren't wasting all that time
The awkward shimmy is too real lol. I love big phones for their overall viewing pleasures but I strategically have to place all essential apps near the bottom of the home screen for my sanity 😅

Hey Peter! Loved the iPhone comparison video. All this talk about the ‘professionalizing’ (stabilization, rack focus, macro, etc…) of camera phones got me thinking about ways to make my clips and images shot on a full-frame mirrorless, gimbal, off-camera lights/flash, and tripod look like something that is still professional, but would be really difficult to create with software alone. Wondering if you be interested in making a ‘top 5 shots that pop video featuring unconventional even quirky camera techniques that camera phones can’t do with the touch of a button’. Apologies if you’ve already done one and I missed it. I’ll do a search after I post this.

2:41 I know you didn't ask, but; I think it takes the individualism and talent out of photography and makes it Apple (or the software engineer) is the one taking the picture. Leaving it up to AI will make all photos look the same without even trying. The whole "cinematics" feature will give us every bloody video on the web looking the same. Rather than "cinematics" serving the visual story, "cinematics" become the focus and story comes second. I don't think I like that. I suppose however those with actual photo talent could use those tools to make something unique. Perhaps a parody of every video you see on the interwebs going forward.😉
the person holding the camera is still responsible for all the other elements that make a great piece. The iPhone offers the cinematics tools but you are still responsible for the composition and the story of that piece.

Would love to see the process you take getting great photos from an iPhone - think you've done one before but a 2021 style with the new gear. Are you using the camera or Lightroom mobile, how do you approach shooting (just shoot vs any process you go through) and then any editing considerations you have for mobile photos vs RAW from a Mirrorless... The thing with the cinematic mode again is that if you're only looking for autofocus around a scene, regular video can do that. But I see a few differences:
1. Regular video has autofocus (no target, just assumed) and an assigned spot in the frame to lock. Cinematic does much more...
2. Cinematic analyzes and follows potential targets to choose an autofocus element to be tracked
3. Cinematic in auto chooses what it thinks is the best target in scene to track (like facial focus)
3. Cinematic boosts the DOF blur just like in Portrait mode but for video (but I think this is really the only reason there's the haloing effect; if the DOF blur could be disabled, all the autofocusing I don't think would be affected at all)

Hey pete, there’s a way if you want to swipe down ur control and notifications easier. There’s a double tap feature but you do need to enable it by searching the settings and find “Back Tap” in the tab, u can configure double tap or triple to pull down ur notifications, hope it helps 🔥🙌🏽
