I do not comment a lot, but I feel that I should comment on this well structured and well made video. It is easily the best explanation and comparison videos of CODEC focusing on HEVC and ProRes I have watched. It is on point and precise, and easy to understand and digest. The comparison of image quality really relies heavily on the same angle and composition of the frame, and the video producer made a big effort to make sure the same object under the same lighting are compared side by side. The smudges and noise, and denoising cannot be explained more simply. I learned so much from this video. It is the first time I came across "The DP Journey" channel, and I instantly subscribed. I’m so glad I watched your video. I originally assumed that h265 would only be affecting shots where there is a lot more movement for the compression to handle and no finer detail in more static shots would be affected. I was happy with the image for the iPhone 15 pro max but still thought it was plain to see it was shot with a mobile phone. On the last shoot after watching your video I used ProRes 422 and tbh the difference is plain to see. The image is much more organic. It looks close to a modern camera and a lot less digital and processed. Thanks for taking your time to create this detailed video.
Yeah H265 is a sort of temporal type of compression, so static areas will be affected more. But also moving areas with solids in their motion blur. Really happy the video helped Thanks for watching
@@THEDPJOURNEY it sure did. I think had the balckmagic allow for w bit more than 50 mbps in h265 it might look a bit better. For my use recording ProRes 422 internally is good enough.

What a wonderful video! You nailed it. Very clear, logical, correct and well-paced. I have been shooting in 422 LT but will definitely choose 422 for the critical stuff. Editing in FCP on Apple Silicon is such a pleasure. Great job!
Immensely helpful, beautifully explained. I shoot simple 3-min music performance clips with an iPhone 15 Pro in ProRes LOG 4k/60. The ProRes workflow is smooth and simple, and the performers look wonderful. Edit in ProRes, export, then delete the big ProRes files. Thanks to what I learned here, I reckon I should export in H.264 instead of H.265 for UA-cam.
This is the closest to perfection a video about video editing can get! It would be great if you could compare the footage of the16 Pro with the 15 Pro to see if there's any difference or improvements. You got yourself a new subscriber!
Men, as you know, your videos are really satisfying, and easy to learn, I never miss a second of your videos🔥🙏🏼. one question☝🏼 Do you agree with my view that it wouldn't be a huge challenge for Apple to bring ProRes Log to the iPhone 14 Pro?
@@snak4716 Because when I compared regular ProRes 422HQ to ProRes 422HQ log, they almost have the same file size. So, it seems Apple might not need beefed-up hardware in the iPhone 14 Pro for shooting ProRes log, And also, i think it’s possible because Regular ProRes 422 HQ is compressed with effects during recording. But log means, uncompressed. So, i think shooting ProRes log might need even less power!😅
@@balarol no it's not that. there isn't any beefed up hardware in regards to size, that's just the hard drive speed you're talking about. it's about missing hardware in the 14. the 15 has a dedicated piece of hardware that is responsible for encoding log, which turns on only when you select log shooting. by default in the standard profile, the 15 uses the same 14 video encoding hardware. there are 2 different pieces of hardware on the 15, one responsible for the standard profile, tone mapping, hdr, etc, and the other is dedicated for the log image processing, which the 14 is missing
my goooodnesss thank you! now i dont have to argue with those "bUt mY pHoNe caN 8k aNd 200mpx" people anymore. ill just send this video in their face haha.
Lol kid 😂u don't have to argue tho because those 8k n 200mp win easily any day I can send u the clips taken from my both phones samsung is years head in tech
It's all been said better than I can, cracking tutorial that I'm gonna recommend my students watch, even just for an understanding of how to evaluate quality and file size for compression/codec choice.
I think it's time for ProRes to have a successor. MPEG-2TS, MP4/H264, and HEVC/H.265 have all come out within ProRes' lifespan. Especially when compared to Blackmagic Raw and even ProRes Raw, it feels oversized for its quality. Maybe smaller versions of ProRes Raw could replace ProRes for capture? I'm interested to see what comes in the future. I do prefer it to DNxHR (since all flavors are 10-bit 4:2:2), but it still feels like it's in need of an update. I find myself preferring to shoot 6K BRAW Q3 as it's smaller than 4K ProRes 422HQ.
Excellent video man. Internal ProRes at 8K to the CFX card is the reason why chose the Fuji XH2. No external SSD's or wires required! Keep up the good work.
Wow. As a beginner, this video was AMAZING-it was informative, concise yet detailed (almost like 422 codec dare I say), with clear explanations and insightful examples. Thank you very much!
Wow, this is one of the best technical YT videos I've ever seen. Your explanations are crystal clear and so simple to understand. Thank you for marvellous work. 😀
Wow. The educational value of this video is off the charts. Thank you so much for such a clear, thorough explanation of something that had been so confusing before. That combined with the side-by-side examples and the educational graphics, what a service! Thanks again!
Thank you, this was very educational for me as a novice user of the iphone to record precious memories. I always worry about future proofing my footage for my family and this helped a lot!
WOW! That made things so easy to understand I love that you presented us a system that considers all aspects of the process to help make decisions! I feel like I learn so much from this video and the decisions actually make sense to me now seeing the footage. Sometimes I struggle with seeing the difference in the footage in comparison videos as I'm still training my eyes and this one really helped with that in addition to the topic at hand
Thank you for such an in-depth video, some bits were too technical for me be your way of explaining helped me a lot to understand some of it at least... loved the comparison style too...
Excellent production. It's astounding how good the H.265 files are. I found that after export and compression of whatever platform it was being viewed on that the difference was negligible & don't bother with ProRes now. It's visible at 400% on my 32" 4K screen, but most of what I make with the phone is going to be being viewed at phone size, at 1080 & being streamed. The simplicity of being able to AirDrop large amounts of footage wirelessly as opposed to dealing with storage media and huge files to archive is the main reason for me. It reduces so much friction to be able to just make things instead of deal with the headache of managing more media. And if the minute quality difference to ProRes will matter for the project, I definitely shouldn't be shooting it on my phone lol
As always best graphics on UA-cam which definitely helps put these concepts over. However I can’t help thinking 99.5% of people watching this will never be making a real movie for cinemas . Especially in this age Tik Tokers and UA-cam channels . Not knocking you . Keep them coming appreciate all your hard work.
Wow. That's eye openening to say the least. I didnt think h265 would be that bad actually and used to choose it all the time. I guess the best way is to shoot a project in a huge prores, then later once the project is finished downsize everything (footage )to h265 for archives
@THEDPJOURNEY, Excellent video. It was the video that made me discover this channel, and with that, it gained another subscriber. As a beginner of filming with iPhone/ProRes/SSD/Rig/Lenses, I ask a question: Is there any chance of editing ProRes videos with DaVinci Resolve on Windows?
@@THEDPJOURNEY Hi, thank you for your quick reply. Well, in my case its a bit weird because, I filmed with my iPhone 15 Pro Max to a Sandisk Extreme SSD, all seems fine so far since I can play it inside "BlackMagic Cam" app Media tab, without any issues, and in "Files" internal app as well. But, If connect the SSD to my PC (a good usb-c cable, USB-C 4.0 rated cable) with VLC, the video's playback simply show a couple of random frames, and even sometimes, are shown with green bars across the video or other kind of artifacts (like codec-related issues). I did a little capture of one of the playbacks, that can be seen on my channel's public videos. There, you can even see the thumbnails of the other videos are messed up. The SSD is brand new. I have no issues at all if playing directly from SSD connected to iPhone. I'm using a Windows 10 Pro, without any kind of issues, GPU is a RTX 4080 Super, CPU Ryzen 5 2nd Gen I've no hint at this time. I was thinking about to get an mini Mac M2 Pro for editing, but with a pretty nice PC with a 39inch Oled Display, I would like to save that money If i have a chance to do it on the PC. Thank you for any advise.

WOW! Thank you so much. I have just been to school. You just answered all my questions on formats. I have a UA-cam channel and have been experimenting with formats. I am settled on 422HQ for my BlackMagic app. Then I use my IPhone camera app on 265 for other things like my talking head videos where I don't need that much detail. Hell, I don't want to scare my audience that much. I am making this the year of as much absolute quality as possible.
people use these weird apps, filmic pro garbage that is now subscription lmao, ive used MoviePro from the filmic times and it is a complete bomb, not sure about black majic though
What an excellent explainer! The demonstrations regarding denoise performance and generation loss were exceptional - you made the difference super clear. A big thanks for running through the different ProRes versions as well; I was having a hard time nailing down the exact level of diminishing returns I'd be comfortable with, but being able to see them cycled through was very enlightening. Thanks you!
Very well done video and well explained. The short version is that H.265 is a display format. It is not really an "acquisition format" for editing. You can watch the original footage, and in that case it is really impressive, particularly given its size. It is also great as a display format for all sorts of devices and situations at the end of the whole ProRes editing process.

Was waiting impatiently for this episode! Appreciate the info tremendously 👍
My pleasure!
I am in awe. Instant subscribe to the channel after watching this. The best explanation I have ever seen on this topic.
Thank you so much for the comment, and welcome aboard
Brilliant breakdown of how codecs work.
Really glad you liked it. Thanks for watching
After this video I feel as really experienced cameraman 😁 really good video🙂
Really happy I can help, Thank you so much for watching
Best Video for this topic! I’ve learned much! Thank you!
Thanks you so much for your support and contribution. 🙏🙏
Thanks to what I learned here, I reckon I should export in H.264 instead of H.265 for UA-cam.
the best explanation about ProRes vs h.265 by far
Good job man !
Your production quality is insane !
Thank you so much, really glad you liked it
This is the closest to perfection a video about video editing can get!
It would be great if you could compare the footage of the16 Pro with the 15 Pro to see if there's any difference or improvements.
You got yourself a new subscriber!
Thank you so much! I’m already working on that other one. Should be out soon
Can you change your UA-cam name to "The Professor"? How brilliant you are! Thank you.
I vote yes!!
LOL... as in the Professor from the NETFLIX series "Money Heist"! That's super flattering, maybe I should... hahah
DP Journey is camera UA-cam for camera UA-camrs. Absolutely terrific stuff, mate.
Thank you so much for the compliment, apologies I didn't fully understand your question
Men, as you know, your videos are really satisfying, and easy to learn,
I never miss a second of your videos🔥🙏🏼.
one question☝🏼
Do you agree with my view that it wouldn't be a huge challenge for Apple to bring ProRes Log to the iPhone 14 Pro?
Thank you so much for your kind words and support, and yes I do agree with you APPLE should definitely add log to iPhone 14
not possible, there is a completely different hardware for log image pipeline in the iphone 15
@@snak4716 also beyond the technical side, on a marketing side, they need more reasons to sell iPhone 15
@@snak4716 Because when I compared regular ProRes 422HQ to ProRes 422HQ log, they almost have the same file size. So, it seems Apple might not need beefed-up hardware in the iPhone 14 Pro for shooting ProRes log,
And also, i think it’s possible because Regular ProRes 422 HQ is compressed with effects during recording.
You made me understand what others failed to explain to me for years. Important work, extremely well done !
Really happy to hear that. I’m glad I can help
Stay tuned for more then, and please share if you can
my goooodnesss thank you! now i dont have to argue with those "bUt mY pHoNe caN 8k aNd 200mpx" people anymore. ill just send this video in their face haha.
hahaha... glad I can help you with your arguments with those people!
MP do matter..when shot far item..iphone camera isn't good as samsung...the only advantages Apple has is codec ProRes
@D0x1511af i’m curious to see your comparison to substantiate this claim
@@D0x1511af not enough dynamic range. That sensor is way too small for 200mpx. Hasselblad or phaseone mid format sensor ok. But not on phone.
Thank you so much for your awesome support! Hope your students would like it as well and find it useful
Prores is not a final format as H.265 is. So I do not understand your desire to upgrade.
Excellent video man. Internal ProRes at 8K to the CFX card is the reason why chose the Fuji XH2. No external SSD's or wires required! Keep up the good work.
Yeah ProRes is usually worth the hassle
First!
I should organise some sort of competition with prizes for the first comment, honestly, thanks again for your dedication, really appreciate it
@@THEDPJOURNEY I'm a huge fan, have been watching you since the beginning. Hope to meet you one day to shoot something. Thanks for all you do.
Thank you so much again for your loyalty and support, it would definitely be a pleasure working with you one day
ok
And…
Wow. As a beginner, this video was AMAZING-it was informative, concise yet detailed (almost like 422 codec dare I say), with clear explanations and insightful examples. Thank you very much!
Really glad you found like 422 🤓👍
Glad I can help at this phase of your career. Best of luck
Thanks for this! This is super helpful! Your way of explaining super complex things in an easy manner is by far the best! Thanks!
Really glad I managed to successfully simplify it for everyone. It wasn’t easy I must say 😂
Thanks for watching
Incredible, best HEVC vs ProRes breakdown on the Internet
Thank you so much, please share if you can, much appreciated
Don’t think I’ll find a better video that explains pro res over h265. 10/10
Really happy you like it, much appreciate it
Wow, this is one of the best technical YT videos I've ever seen. Your explanations are crystal clear and so simple to understand. Thank you for marvellous work. 😀
Thank you so much for such an awesome comment
Wow. The educational value of this video is off the charts. Thank you so much for such a clear, thorough explanation of something that had been so confusing before. That combined with the side-by-side examples and the educational graphics, what a service! Thanks again!
You're very welcome!
Thank you, this was very educational for me as a novice user of the iphone to record precious memories. I always worry about future proofing my footage for my family and this helped a lot!
Really happy I can help, thanks for watching
WOW! That made things so easy to understand
I love that you presented us a system that considers all aspects of the process to help make decisions! I feel like I learn so much from this video and the decisions actually make sense to me now seeing the footage. Sometimes I struggle with seeing the difference in the footage in comparison videos as I'm still training my eyes and this one really helped with that in addition to the topic at hand
Thank you so much, really happy you liked the comparison. And thank you so much for the kind words.
Thank you for such an in-depth video, some bits were too technical for me be your way of explaining helped me a lot to understand some of it at least... loved the comparison style too...
Glad you liked it. Yeah that’s why I gave a Nerd Alert warning 🤓 but glad you survived it
I know it’s a bit intense but necessary
If all your footage is going to be viewed on iPhone, and there’s not much post Production then for sure H265 is best for you
Okay, for someone only occasionally shooting video, this is incredibly helpful. The comparisons make the video! Thank you.
This is such a good educational video. I love the aspect of trade offs per codec.
Anyone who needs to learn about codecs in general should watch this.
Glad you liked it. Please share if you can, really helps a lot
Totally feeling you, TikTok, where shall we begin?!
Wow. That's eye openening to say the least. I didnt think h265 would be that bad actually and used to choose it all the time. I guess the best way is to shoot a project in a huge prores, then later once the project is finished downsize everything (footage )to h265 for archives
Yup, that would be a great workflow
Best. Video. Ever. Exactly what I was looking for and explained in the simplest and most professional way possible.
Wow, thanks! 🙏
@THEDPJOURNEY, Excellent video. It was the video that made me discover this channel, and with that, it gained another subscriber.
As a beginner of filming with iPhone/ProRes/SSD/Rig/Lenses, I ask a question:
Is there any chance of editing ProRes videos with DaVinci Resolve on Windows?
Thank you so much for joining the channel. I believe you can edit ProRes in DR on a windows machine. Not sure since I own Macs
I'm using a Windows 10 Pro, without any kind of issues, GPU is a RTX 4080 Super, CPU Ryzen 5 2nd Gen
I've no hint at this time. I was thinking about to get an mini Mac M2 Pro for editing, but with a pretty nice PC with a 39inch Oled Display, I would like to save that money If i have a chance to do it on the PC.
Thank you for any advise.
This is the best video explaining technical info i've seen in a white!
Thank you Sherif! amazing!
Really happy you liked it, thank you so much for the support and for the kind words
I'm sorry 😁😁😁😁 Wrong comment wrong video. But I did watch all the way to the end and you did clarify a lot for me. In terms of trying to be a creator and Having trouble deciding whether I should use widow. H265 for go off the deep end and use pro Res for just regular videos. I know this video took a lot of work for you and in return. You helped countless amounts of people.
Thanks for watching
Outstanding tutorial, you even made the section you warned would be technical very easy to follow. I wish you made videos for every one of my filmmaking questions :D
Thank you so much for the compliment, glad you found it easy to grasp. Please go ahead and ask questions here, I’m curious what do you need clarification for?
Wow, I'm really enjoying this Netflix chanel!!!
😂
Don’t forget to pay for the subscription
Amazing video - spent an ages trawling the internet and this single video answered all my questions and more! Subscribed 🙂
Really glad to hear that. Thank you so much for watching.
Rewatched this to convince my self again that ProRes is way to go. Thank you so much for this high quality informative video.
Glad it was helpful!
This video was so clear and comprehensive to breaking down the advanced concepts of video codecs, it should have been integrated in an Apple Keynote.
Woah! Wait! I finished this video!? Why do I find it entertaining? (Not in a negative way). This is true Masterclass!!! I learned a lot!
Realllly glad you liked it!!! Thanks for the compliments 🙏
Would really appreciate if you share it. It helps with the channel a lot. Thanks again
Thanks you!
Thank you so much for the kind compliments and awesome comment, really happy you found this video informative, and it answered all your questions
man this is mind-blowing! complex topic clearly explained both in words and images, it is a university photography lecture.
Thank you so much for the compliment. Really glad you liked it
the fact that you're scrubbing flawlessly with 6K ProRes on an Intel Machine... that's a huge compliment to ProRes.
Hahaha, true. Shows how super optimised it is
Very well done video and well explained. The short version is that H.265 is a display format. It is not really an "acquisition format" for editing. You can watch the original footage, and in that case it is really impressive, particularly given its size. It is also great as a display format for all sorts of devices and situations at the end of the whole ProRes editing process.
You rock, very professional and not annoying personality.
You Rock! 🤘
LIterally one of best tutorial-videos I've ever seen on UA-cam
Thank you so much! Glad you liked it 🙏
@@THEDPJOURNEY you’re welcome

Bro. Thank you for the insane effort gone into producing this video. I learned a lot and I’ve been making videos for 15 years.
Wow, thanks, My pleasure!
Thank you. Excited to do my own testing - this breakdown was very helpful - waiting for my 16 pro to come soon!
Happy to help, enjoy your new phone!
Man, this is a lecture not a video!
Hats off ❤
So nice of you, thanks for your support
Hats off to you!! I recently bought the iphone 15 pro max, along with Brandon Li's co-design small rig. I've been strongly researching and studying various videos regarding videography and photography, in addition to all the components that go with them, (colour grading, camera functions and set-up, shooting techniques etc...) as I'm very new to content creation. I personally found this video to be highly educational/informative! There is so much I HAVE and WANT to learn... so please keep making content like this to help guide new content creators such as myself, as you are an outstanding educator and will make a strong impact. You're awesome!
Thank you for your classes with great technical content. I use ProRes LT on both the iPhone 15 and a Fujifilm X-H2s and I find it a perfect balance for wedding videos. Hugs directly from Brazil
Great to hear! And Hugs from New York. I always wanted to visit Brazil! Maybe one day
Very precise, clear and clean quality content. Thanks !
