Hahaha I love Pete's passion for his leather working tools. I think there's something so special about analog and tactile stuff. That's why I have a weird obsession with mechanical watches. There's just something so special about not-digital-stuff that is so good for the soul!
Very inspiring Pete, 2 years ago I closed my framing business of 11 years. After trying to make it work and alot of frustrating times. I found my passion filming and fishing! I still work on completely being ok with it. But I'm excited for where I'm going! Love this video and as always love your content!
Inspiring video, thank you Peter! I had a similar experience about 2 years ago when I put my career as a jazz musician on hold and decided to pursue photography. It's been an awesome 2 years and I feel like this is just the beginning. I've never been happier than as a portrait photographer and now the time I play music is much more satisfying. It's so important to be present and just stop trying to force things to happen, which I did for a long time.
Every ones in a while, I see a new video from Peter McKinnon and think by myself what will i learn today.. and still this are the video's where i don't skip 2 seconds of it bcs it's just so good and i'm affraid to miss something! Thanks!
I’ve learned this lesson many times as my health kicked my butt, but have yet to find that thing that provides a good living. My custom photography was just taking off but walking with two canes and having mini-strokes falling once more at one of my last weddings decided it was time. Now I’m in a wheelchair most of the time. I did local events and shows for a while and that was just going well, then I ended up in the ER for an allergic reaction to another vendor’s items. And so that too came to an end. Getting found online is a difficult art all in itself. I tried posting regularly and whatnot, but still waiting for that thing that is my thing to be the bill paying thing. Writing is my thing and putting that in books and videos brings me joy…ya know except for listening to my own voice… but still waiting for that time when everything just clicks into place. My other things are creating coloring books and Pieces of Light. “If we don’t try, we don’t do. If we don’t do, then what are we here on this Earth for?” is a favorite quote of mine. I’m always doing, just hoping for all that doing to pay off one of these days. (That quote is from the movie Shenandoah by the way.) You need some Ford tractors to go with your Ford Trucks there Peter. ~Lisa
"You've got to know when to hold 'em Know when to fold 'em Know when to walk away And know when to run!" - Kenny Rogers Great video! Cheers from Northern Ontario.
Love this! Creating with your hands are the best. Even better than watching your awesome cinematic, blue collar, woodwork, canadian, ford-picuptrucks, life lesson - snowy YT-video! So good, can't wait for the next.
its mayb 6 years m watching him nd the thing is i nvr get bored of anything he shows off... even making a cup of coffee he makes it so cool... wht a talented guy he is. Keep it up bro.
I’ve spent the last 7 years garment sewing and the last three and a half talking/demoing on my UA-cam channel. The last year I’ve lost interest but kept going because it was my income but I ended up with a second channel for other creative endeavours. Then running two channels was too much so I’ve come back to my main channel and announced I am pivoting, taking back my happiness and excitement for UA-cam. All this to say I can really relate to what you talked about. Maybe I’ll come back to sewing one day when I recover from the burnout it caused. Thanks for sharing.
I feel like you're my soul doppelganger or something lol. I also do leather work as my "other thing", motorcycles are my main thing, i ride and work on them, I'm from florida and always been captivated by pirates and you're one of the main reasons/inspiration for me getting into photography!
here within seconds of upload. Will use this opportunity to say: Thank you for the amazing content Pete! May you have the best times even in the toughest situations.
Love your videos Man. Love the mood and leather craft will fit to that mood perfectly. All your videos are just perfect. Keep making all that great stuff.
The timing for this video couldn’t have been more perfect. I used to have a UA-cam channel called Teach Me To Design a few years ago, and then even tried graphic design coaching to try and help others after working as a professional for the last 15 years. It never really got to a point where I was able to make money from it after working my arse off for 4 years, so I decided to hang it up and just focus on my career. I’m glad I tried both things, and I can honestly say when I was doing it I gave it my all. Now I just take on passion projects I’m excited about and I recently got back into making music, which I haven’t done since before deciding to become a graphic designer. I’m happy to say that it serves a new purpose for me now, very similar to what you described with your leather work. Thanks for sharing this Pete - it’s nice to see some real ones who aren’t just making it seem so easy all of the time.
This video has INCREDIBLE timing. Just going through a tough time in my photography business. I love photography, but I feel like I have begun to hate the "business" side. I have been thinking its time to step away to keep my love of it.
i've been a carpenter for 20 years, i comprehend exactly this. i've been creating things that I love! also got almost 12 years since I started with photography, and like 7 as a pro photog. it's just amazing to create.
Great point and life lesson. I had to learn and accept that some things happen when THEY are supposed to, not when you want it to. But it's funny, because sometimes, stepping away from a passion allows you to build up something else that provides resources to your passion and when the passion returns it not only stands, it runs effortlessly! Such a great video.
Crafting will never die, just the crafters themselves. Learn a craft and people will follow. Following the pack, trying to lead the trends before others, and trying to be innovative is a key to failure unless you get lucky every single time. If you do that, and are a craft maker or producer, you can still fall back on your craft.. especially if it's available to do in many countries.
The transitions in this were top tier. For me, oddly enough, my leather business is photography - and my UA-cam business is also growing on UA-cam. One day once UA-cam is sustainable for me, I plan on getting back into photography for the sake of photography, and not to turn it into a business.
This video really hit home for me!! I just decided to quit on my yarn dying business. 've give it my all for the last two years and right now it's just not bringing me joy like it use to. I've thought a lot about it and made the choice to put that energy into the art of photography. It's something that I've always loved and never thought I was good enough, but if I don't try, I'll never know... Thanks for the message Peter.
I know the struggle of putting things on the back burner all to well. Seasons of life, struggles of life {parent passing away}, job changes, energy fluctuations. So many things feel like they force you to put things aside. But I'm a firm believer in keeping those endeavors around {as you said you regretting getting rid of our tools once}. Acknowledge and don't lose the pieces of who you were. Looking forward to a garage tour, Pete.
Great example of taking action and starting something new. Many of us struggle with that first step because we’re afraid of failing or not knowing what to do next. It’s taken you 8 years to get where you are. I thank you for sharing that and letting us know that hard work, intuition, and perseverance pays off. Ah, sometimes luck plays a small part.
It's been a while since I watched your videos regularly and you still don't hesitate to provide wonderful content! I love the inspiring insight you give at times! I have worked on a wedding photography business for 10 years now and it's been quite a difficult thing for me to realize it's time for me to step away from weddings. But I know it's time and I am happy for that.
Peter Mackinnon is mastering the art of editing and story-telling and it shows. Love this new content, way more substantial than just eye-catchy transitions, sound effects and pointless use of slo mo
I know we are almost the same age...but you deeply remember me at my dad, and I can't wait to hang with him in the garage again and working on projects. Thank you so much for the extra kick today! Working with your hands on something is extremely satisfying. Feel the different textures of objects, liquids, screw up, achieving small goals, another cup of coffee and back to the beginning. Dope!
I didn't know I was a wedding photographer until I folded after 7 years. After 3 years, I realized it was in my blood. Not my main gig but as a weekend gig now, I love it more than ever. I can totally relate and agree with everything you said.
Hey I bought some note books from your leather business and I was going to buy a belt but it was shut down before I could buy one! I asked if you would sign the last page of the note books and draw a smiley face. And you did! I have loved your work from the place chair days. Thanks Pete.
I noticed the skiver in one of your other videos and wondered why you had that, and now I found this video! I completely get what you’re saying about keeping that thing your thing
The way you look at leather is the way my life in photography went, trying to making money at it killed my love for the art so now I make what I want and don't worry about it. Also orange Trucks are the best, I have an Inferno orange Tundra and love it
I got into leather work last year and so love the process of making wallets, card holders, and other stuff. It’ll never be a main source of income but will always be something I enjoy!
Favourite part of this video was the “Holy shit it’s cold”. Such an incredibly human moment that made me laugh way too hard. This video made me think of little projects I’ve attempted in life that didn’t work out. And the truth is that it is ok and there’s always something to pull from it. Good on you Pete. Loving the energy as always
AMEN!!!! Dude keep your head up, keep grinding brother. Have NO idea how much this video ment. Been a funky place! Definitely needed to hear these words man..
I'm a barista relatively close to you geographically, and you inspired me to get into photography and coffee (I worked at Tim Hortons for 3 years and Starbucks for 1 year before I could drink a cup of coffee). You're how I learned and fell in love with the Chemex. I wanna make you a cup someday
I feel you Pete, happened the same exact thing to me with knives making. I quit as soon as things started moving. It wasn’t fun anymore, but then I went for writing :)
If you can touch it and you can physically see progress - it makes you happy. I was a locksmith before life made me a real estate agent and an IT project manager after that. My happiest memories lay with working with my hands in the real world :)
When you make your hobby your job . . . your hobby becomes . . . .a job. That's why I've done custom solid woodworking as a "professional hobby" for over 30 years - still my hobby, I do make "some" money at it, but it's not what I do to make money (which is payment processing, for a wide range of clients both small and large). As Wayne would say - "Do what you love and you'll never work another day in your life". Do what you live Peter - you're damn good at it.
Hello my name is Peter McKinnon and I can make an ordinary trip to the lumber hard look like a cinematic masterpiece. Much love Peter! Always love watching the content
I see the crf in the back homie.. you’ve got as many hobbies as me lol, that’s the issue. I’ve learned to keep everything as well though, we’re a military family, so every move, an old hobby resurfaces. Love your work dude and glad you’re lighting that old 🔥!
The cool thing is, with your Following Peter, you could make a small side gig job, like a limited edition Wallet, filter or card holder, Name tags etc in leather of the highest quality and sell it, make competitions to further help young talent etc as a unique reward, that no one has. Love your videos! And knowing when to quit is one of the hardest lessons in life. Especially when you are super passionate about it 😅
I was so scared you were done being a photographer. And then I realized it was UA-cam. And that I’m okay with that! As long as I get to see your beautiful pictures. I really enjoyed your tutorials and your thoughts on new cameras. Thank you for being here for the time that you did! I hope you will keep your channel up so others can still watch your videos years down the road.
I think you might have missed what he was saying - he never said anything about quitting UA-cam - actually talked about how much he loves it. The whole point of the video was to say that he quit his leather business and it led way to a better career (UA-cam) and now he can do leather on the side.
Excellent Video Peter. Your Friend Jeff Has A Really Nice Woodworking Shop and Equipment. Your New Leather Bench Is Really Nice. Looking Forward To Seeing Your Skills With Tooling Leather and What You Create From It. Thank You.
Perfect timing sir! I’m about to transition out of wildfire work into full time wedding (& brand) filmmaking. The numbers all say I’m good, but I’m struggling making the jump. Leaving fire after 17 seasons is tough. You’ve re-lit the fire for moving away from fire!
"..having the thing, that's not your thing.." Love it! Best advice by Pete for keep feeding your creativity 👏😌
Putin had the same idea. ( Ends bad )

Now I know here you got your inspiration from xD
2018 vibes are back.! So glad to see you the energy.!
This video is phenomenal. I love these semi vlogs where you talk around a theme. Made me fall in love with this channel.

5:24-5:27. That transition was sick af!! I know you use it, but for some reason from going to the tape to the saw just made it so good.
that background music is a whole mood
Just want to say that I love your dad's UA-cam channel. I find it calming and quite informative.
It was your video about your leather business that introduced me to leather-working, and now I have started this and it’s amazing. Thank you 🙏

Your visual storytelling is the best as always. Love the message too!
Pete! 😊😊😊 watching you after a little long and its just the same thrill!... Awesome..
Pete has to be one of the most likable people on UA-cam. Loving this video.
Your b-roll storytelling never gets old. I can imagine that it’s a lot of work, but know that people enjoy and appreciate it. 👍👍
