Thanks Shug, watching you work that Beetle by the Ears helped me gain confidence with my new suspension choice over my original Warbonnet Cinch Buckles.
Hey shug shuggity shoog! I was wondering if you could make a video on backwoods cooking. Perhaps show how you reheat your pancakes you made the night before, or little tips and tricks for one-pot cooking. It would be nice to have all your cooking tips in one place. Just a couple ideas! Thanks
I don't truly cook...mainly boil water for dehydrated meals. As to the panckes I did show that I but them in a boil bag and just heat them in boiling water. Pretty simple stuff. Most of my meals are kinda part of all my trip videos. Hope that helps.
Dude, thanks for being so thorough! I'll stick with the marlin spike for now. KISS is my method. (Not the band but the acronym). Cool and entertaining videos. Stay warm.
Yeah I just bought beetle buckles and longer straps. I found that with shorter straps and whoopie slings which is the lightest setup, the straps were too short for some trees. So I figured if I need longer straps anyway I might as well just make it as simple/quick/easy as I could.
You can use poly straps or spider poly so you can get all black straps. From Dutchware site: *Spider/Poly straps combined with the Beetle Buckles will have a weight limit of 350lbs* *Polyester straps combined with the Beetle Buckle will have a weight limit of 300lbs* dutchwaregear.com/product/beetle-buckle-complete/#beetle-buckle-hardware
Really have enjoyed these videos!! With the beetle buckle kind of act similar to Cam buckles in essence? If you had long enough straps on the beetle buckle would you even need the whoopie sling? Thanks for the great info
@@shugemery any system you would recommend I’m a bigger guy at about 280 pounds and wasn’t sure if that would put me close to the limit on some of these. Thanks 🙏🏻
@@stevestory8483 This should do ya'...dutchwaregear.com/product/ti-cinch-buckle-complete-suspension/#ti-cinch-buckle-amsteel-loop-pair Get the 1/8 amsteel. 8 inch loop.
I just watched all parts of Suspension Series..... and my head hurts... lol. Most seem like great ideas... but which do I choose.... screw it I will buy them all.... hahaha
The warbonnet ridgerunner has amsteel Loop going to an aluminum D ring. Can I remove that d-ring and use the dutchware gear bridge hammock suspension system with the titanium hook directly? Thanks
Beetle buckles with the option for a spreader bar. Any luck getting Mrs. Shug out there? Mine just begrudgingly agreed to join me this spring. Thinking Jay Cook for maximum wow factor and minimum effort.
Hey Shug! I'm a long time watcher and beginner hammock camper, and I'd like to thank you for your informative videos! I have one question or suggestion though: looking at your comprehensive series on hammock suspension, I'm seeing a dozen different sliding buckles with various trimmings that seem to my engineering eye functionally identical with each other and descender rings for the main parts, and pretty much the same goes with whoopie slings and the UCRs that implement the same exact principle for the same function. It would be fantastic if you could drill down deeper on the pros and cons of different general types and whether the particular implementations are good or bad examples of you catch my drift. I'm familiar with using whoopie slings and I spliced myself a set with soft shackles for tree straps, but as of now it's hard for me to grasp the differences between all these set ups in different usage scenarios and I don't have the time or funds to try each and every type for myself.
Well they all serve the same pupose just different materials. Like pens and forks..they all write or put food in your mouth but there are slight design differences. It is just a matter of what you like best. I use whoopies and cinch buckles for the most part. Sounds like you have a system you like. I feel I went as far as I need to on suspension and feel that you could search for more on You Tube and maybe get more insight. Always good to do even more research and see what others do. Carry forth. Also you could always contact Dutchware or the likes as they are always happy to answer folks.
shugemery thanks for the feedback! I've got a setup that works, but the mind can't help but wonder and think can I do something even better 😊 Happy trails!
Hi Shug! Do you think the woopie slings are necessary with the dyneema straps and cinch buckles? Seems like one can be eliminated.. my new Xmas setup is Dutch clip with dyneema to cinch buckle/continuous loop to Dutch biner to continuous loop/hammock... I see eno came out with their Helios tree straps/slings Seems lighter but short spanned... Either way all good systems just wanted to get your opinion😆wooo buddy!
The way to remember is once you have thread it back through the tap makes the buckle look like a c for closed and if you haven't done it it's a o for open. That's how I remember it
Shug I appreciate the videos as always! I hope you and yours had a very Merry Christmas! I do have a question though. I'm going winter camping in a few days in the Smokies, the temps are supposed to be around 12-15 degrees at night. I have a 20 degree synthetic bag, and a 30 degree down quilt. Do you think using these in a combination would be sufficient? And if so, should I put the quilt on the outside of the synthetic bag? I will be ground camping for this endeavor. Thank you
Very Good Shug! I have bought a lot of gear from Dutch over the last few years. A little off topic, but watching some of the ultralight guys videos they have next to nothing for first aid. In my opinion I think that they are starting to push their gear too much to save weight. A six or seven pound base weight sounds good, but if something happens when they are alone it could be a nightmare. Warmer clothing is another area that they push the limit.
Informative video Shug. One question for you about your custom Hammock Gear Incubator 20 under quilt/black and orange UQ. How many ounce overfill do you have in that? I like the loft and that probably raises the UQ performance. Thanks for any input.
Time to "fess up".I realized I was doing my Dutch buckle incorrectly when I sat down in the hammock and the strap slipped on thru lowering me to the ground.Yes,this after sleeping in it all night!I like all of Dutch's stuff except whoopie hooks.I got the buckles, cinches, sliders, and beetles. It's an addiction.......................

I drove myself crazy trying to get the ridgeline "just right"(bending it easily when you sit in it). I decided that's not 100% necessary. I hope I'm right! I was comfortable without the perfection!
Shug i had a question. I am looking into using mule tape 3/4 in 2500lb capacity for a hammock with no hardware! Have u ever used this or could u do a video on this??? Thanks
Hey Shug. You're one cool dude, and someone I could get along with on the trail. No worries, I live to far away to find you. But you are a kindred spirit, and would love to meet you sometime. I know this may sound creepy in some way...a little liquor will do that. I'm just a regular guy who appreciates what you're showing. Also, I love BBQ. Maybe try Big Bob Gibson's rub someday. Now that I'm done sounding like a weirdo, on to your next video!
Kinda puts a lot of stress on the suspension and the trees to have it straight out. Try about a 30% angle roughly. This may give some insight....theultimatehang.com/hammock-hang-calculator/
Is that what the picture shows on the card for the buckle? Something still looks off. Sorry I don't use them ether, and I'm probably wrong my self. I am only trying to help. You really are the best.
strong materials will not deteriorate under static bodyweight loads, just ask any trad climber who commits their life to rappels off of webbing and dyneema on a regular basis.
Have a look at the video on dutchwaregear.com.com for the proper way to use the Dutch buckle, you got it wrong on your second attempt as well. :) Your way will work but it seems safer the way it's done on the Dutch site. Love your videos though :)
Yup, have been using them for a couple of years. If you try both ways you'll see that using it "the Dutch way" will have more of the buckle below your loop resting/pressing against the strap, so it is less likely to "flip", at least in theory. But I tend to agree, it will probably hold just fine both ways. But if I was (even) heavier I would have only used it "the Dutch way". :) Thanks for hours of great humor and hammock tips!
sorry it's a cell phone game like scrabble. i tried Shug and Shuge for the heck of it and neither is a legit spelling. thought you would like to know you're not in Webster's dictionary yet! keep up the great video's and happy holidays!

Mr Emory, thank you for your talents, hard work and dedication to make the hammock world and life a beautiful place!

This series has been great to watch as I look to get rid of my old daisy chain tree straps to something lighter and better. Thanks Shug.
Glad it gave some insight.
So glad you're still making videos, made the mistake not checking your channel for a couple years
Still at it until it is no more fun.

Beetle Buckle with Whoopie sling looks pretty good.
I'd say a Beetle Buckle to continuous loop is the better as A whoopie and all that dyneema strap is a bit overkill.

Whoopie slings are a lot about reducing bulk and a bit less weight. My opinion. They are all just options and a means to an end.

If you mean dutch buckles instead of cinch buckles then you have other options like just using the continuous loop and no whoopie.
