So far I'm liking the cinch buckles. They seem to fit the kiss method for me the most. Thank you for showing all these different ways to hang the hammock.

I recently switched back to the cinch buckles and still using the Dutch Clips. We like setting up the hammocks faster and it's worth the couple of extra ounces. It also works better with closer trees. Nothing wrong with my whoopie sling setup! I also ordered a Dangerbird Dream Hammock. This will make it now 6 hammocks for our collection! LOL

Great video. The best part is this system allows stringing the hammock from tree to tree right out of the bag without anything touching the ground.

Should have known to just watch your vid first you’re the one that convinced me to get a hammock lol. Just got my first hammock a Hennessy, didn’t want to spend too much on my first hammock and want to change up the suspension so it’s easier to adjust but I am mind blown 🤯 too many options but atleast I’ve got a better idea how they all work together now. I've been addicted to my hammock for almost a year now and have done a bunch of research somehow soft shackles have evaded me. I really like the idea of them plus there is the weight savings I believe I will give them a try. As always thank you for sharing sir.

I find your explanations very useful Shug. I only use webbing and two different knots, cause couldn't get into this hardware shackle stuff before. That saves me some time and weight. And adds a safer feeling while i'm hanging. But maybe i should try the shackles out, great video!

Good overview. Just FYI, Dutch also has a system very similar to the Warbonnet Buckles called the June Bug buckle (it's fairly new). He added some extra points to one buckle to make it easier to separate the two buckles. I find it to be a nice middle ground for cost / weight ratio. Not as light as titanium cinch buckle, but lighter than the metal cinch buckle. I just got a pair for use with my Dutchware 11ft netless hammock. I also have to warbonnet buckles for my other hammock. Both systems work great.

I never paid any attention to cinch buckles because I thought that much webbing would be heavy. Was recently on Warbonnet’s site and noticed a Blackbird with cinch buckles was only 2 ounces heavier than with whoopie slings. I was very surprised! I’ll be switching over.

I'm not a fan of bright colors but I waste several minutes every day finding clothes because everything is grey or black. I have the same problem in my pack. I'm planning on a thru hike in the next couple years and I think I could save a lot of frustration by using all the pretty colors they offer. Also I've forgotten black tree straps more than once.

when you position your strap so that it doesn't put too much stress on the shackle, I think an additional turn around the tree would reduce the stress even more. It's the most amazing hitch ever---3 or 4 turns around a post is very strong. With webbing it may slip but it's the principle that's interesting.
Logical....though I rarely ever do it.

Have you ever done a video using a carabiner? Does the same principle apply as a Dutch Clip - putting it to the side to lessen stress on webbing and 'biner?

Have you ever used prusik knows along to separate pieces of rope? That seems like a decent way of doing it without straps or (extra)hardware? By the way. This video is saved to my bluegrass playlist just because I that mandolin sounds really good wherever you recorded it.

I like the cinch buckles from Myerstech Hammock Lab. They stay straight, bite hard, release easily, and are fairly lightweight. No complaints with them so far, but I still like the whoopie sling/marlin spike hitch/toggle the best.

Your videos are what has saved my camping trips. I have a bad back, and you got me to try a hammock. First night in one, and I told my wife I might hang it in my bedroom because I finally slept all night, and it was the best night I've had in 15+ years. I am hammock crazy now.

I am looking to upgrade from a daisy chain to a cinch buckle system. Looking at what vendors sell I was wondering if you find that 12' of webbing is usually enough or would 15' serve me better. I mostly was comparing the buckles from Dutch and Warbonnet. I do a lot of canoe trips in the BWCA or short hike in camping from the car so weight is not really an issue for me.
Maybe one 12' and one 15' to be sure. You can always cut off and shorten down the road.
Not only are they quick, but they also reduce problems of bigger trees (as with tree huggers), of longer distances, and the minimum distance of whoopies.
Bit bulkier though.

So I bought a hammock with cinch buckles attached to the continuous loops, which were already attached to the hammock when it arrived. Can I just attach the cinch buckle to the buckle on the tree straps using a carabiner?
Let me put it another way. If I use a beetle buckle at one end of my tree strap, can I run a carribiner through the hole in the beetle buckel and attach it to the cinch buckle at the end of the continuous loop?
I think so. Or try to remove cinch buckles if not needed.

Not really. Good to twist the straps a couple of turns to help shed rain as well.

Hey Shug, Love your videos. I’ve been working my way through your entire playlist. I recently purchased a used Dutchware half zip with a continuous loop, soft shackle & whoopie sling suspension. Would I be able to larks head the fixed end of my whoopie sling directly to the continuous loop of my hammock? I feel like the soft shackles may be redundant. Thanks

I make my own soft shackles out of paracord no problems with them yet never had one break never had one fail

I use tree strap, whoopie, marlinspike hitch suspension. There are super light tree straps now butI still use polyester.

may be one moar thing to add is, if one takes the webbing out of the cinch buckle (to use the webbings' own loop....etc) the middle part, that metal bar thingy, can actually fall out and get lost in the dark forest floor.....

So many hammocks these day it is hard to tell a person what to get. Google "camping hammocks" and look at the choices.
Can you attach a cinch buckle to a carabiner? Just curious. I have 2 hammocks. One uses daisy chain suspension and the other is a cinch buckle. I don't want to really convert the first. Just in case I need to daisy chain it for some reason.
I have never tries doing that but it may work. Only one way to find out......
@@shugemery Your uncertain answer is a certainty good sir! I'm gonna give it a try next week. I can't see any structural failure possibility other than the carabeners failing. But there's no reason for them to do that. I'll let you know. At the very least if I end up on the ground I can practice my quick tarp shelter pitch.
What size and material is that soft shackle made out of?
Mine seem to be 7/64 and 1/8 amsteel.

I would say just make sure the pack is properly fitted whatever pack you choose.
I have the buckles that came with my Warbonnet Eldorado hammock. One of them keeps slipping. I can't figure out why. I haven't ended up on the floor yet. What can I do about that?
Make sure your strap is straight in the buckle. Also maybe tie a slippery half hitch behind the buckles.

I use tree strap/marlinspike/toggle/ whoopie suspension 95% of the time.
It would take forever for me to do a video like this one because every time I got into the hammock to demonstrate how a suspension holds under pressure, I would not want to get back out and I would have to take another nap. :)
It is hard to get once in there. So nice just laying there. Doing nothing. Then get up to do something.

Bigger guy here...a little worried about weight limits. Is the hammock itself the weak spot in all these systems? I see they come with upper weight limits -- 200 lbs, 250 lbs, 400 lbs, etc. Do I have to worry about any of these suspension systems if I weight, oh I don't know, 280 lbs?
Always look at the specs on the weight bearing on suspensions. They usually list it. Or call/email the vendor. At 280 you should be fine for most of these suspensions.
What kind of webbing do you use? Mine seem to stretch to much. Thanks
Warren Foster I use polypropylene webbing. Links should be below video.. Nylon stretches but polypropylene does not.
Shug, you mentioned that the (non ti) cinch buckles are aluminum. Correction, they're stainless steel. The warbonnet buckles are aluminum.
One thing I do with buckle suspensions is to make a slip on elastic belt loop that I would keep just a few inches above the buckle to slip the tag end of the webbing through. This helps to ensure (but not guaranty) proper alignment within the buckle itself. Hope that makes sense. It sure beats a slippery half hitch, which is a self defeating hack in my opinion. If you don't have enough confidence in your buckles to do without the hack, then you need to move onto a supsension that you DO have confidence in.
My wife and I prefer Beetle Buckles on dyneema.
A lot to cover so I was bound to err in a few places. The SHH has to be tied loosley and not cock the buckle. Your idea sound good......folks will do what they need to I hope. My Ti buckles never slip. Not my warbonnet.

Does anyone back your buckle with a slippery half-hitch as a safeguard against the strap slipping in the buckle? Or would it just come undone if the buckle started to slip?
Some I do but on good ones there is no need. Just make sure the straps are lined up very straight.
Hey Bud! Random question here. I made my own hammock a while back in the style of your good ol' green bean, and I am looking at installing the warbonnet cinch buckle as it's permanent suspension system. At the moment I have my gathered ends wrapped and a loop attached via a prusik knot right below the wrappings used to hook to a loop webbing via carabiner. Now when I saw your warbonner buckles I saw the continuous loop hooked to the hammocks loop via some metal device (with more prusik knots?) My question is, in your opinion, is this necessary or can I just use that knot to hook them together without the metal piece. Or should I just remove the loop and attach the cinch buckles continuous loop straight to my gathered ends. Really appreciate your thoughts, love your videos and having a lot of fun building an entire hammocking system.
Also, not sure if those knots i'm referring to are prusik, marlin spike hitches or something else entirely.

On most of my hammocks continual loop larkheads to hammock end.
There are many ways to do it.
You may be refering to my dutch biners.
Do the cinch buckles on my warbonnet traveler provide the water break (drip Line) or should a show string be added before or after?

If your hammock has a ridge line...why does the angle need to be around 30 degrees? The hammock will retain its sag no matter how loose or tight you tie the supporting tree lines. I can see the the importance of that angle if there is not a ridge line. Also...this continuous loop.....why not just make your own by tying a knot at the end to make a loop? Also...if the bark is very smooth, placing the webbing in the "stressed" position will grab the tree with more tightness to prevent slipping down the trunk.
It is a stress thing and most get a better hang on the diagonal in the hammock.
30º is just a good starting point. Gives newbs a place to start as they always want to go straight out with the suspension. More force on webbing and tree that way. But hang as you will. You can do the continuous loop. I have some that way. Just use a good knot! Some old Warbonnet gear has the continuous loop that way.
I'd rather wrap the tree strap differently that having it placed in the stressed position. Many wrap twice. Never had mine slide enough that a slight adjustment up won't fix.

Of course you can. But if you are set up and need to move your suspension up and a limb is in the way then a dutch clip make it easier. Anyone can just do it however they want to. No rules...

I keep looking at you, attaching a loop(soft shackle) to a loop(end of strap) and wonder, if you have a loop, just use the loop, why add more loop?
